People often ask for protein powder recommendations.
I’ve tried Spirutein a few times, but I only like the cookies-n-cream flavor. And Jay Robb’s okay ( it’s a hassle having to buy it online). But the truth is that, in my everyday diet, I normally don’t use any protein powder. I get enough protein from “real” foods (more on that soon) and just don’t see a need to go out of my way to supplement with powder. (Not that I think there’s anything wrong with it.)
However, I recently had the chance to sample NutriBiotic chocolate rice protein powder (nutribiotic.com), and I’m ever so glad! It seemed to thicken up better than the Jay Robb, and I really liked the flavor. Nutritionally speaking, this stuff’s an all-star as well: A 16-gram serving has 12 grams of protein, with only one gram of sugar. And, although it doesn’t matter to me, I know a lot of you will appreciate the fact that this protein powder is also free of soy.
From their website: NutriBiotic Vegan Rice Protein is a high quality, low carbohydrate vegetable protein. This easily digestible protein provides an extensive array of naturally occurring amino acids, the building blocks of protein. Ideal for individuals who suffer from food allergies and digestive difficulties.
So now that I’ve found a protein powder I like, does that mean I’m going to start eating it every day?
No, I still don’t feel like that’s necessary. I don’t eat protein powder to get more protein into my diet; I just use it every so often because I like the taste and the funny texture of it.

I’m not a fan of most protein powders because they have that artificially sweet flavor that I can’t stand. I haven’t tried this one though.
Hmm.. name for little sister. I kind of like mashed potato-covered little sister, buuut she could always be chocolate- drizzled little sister. You know, since she’s not as old she isn’t quite as covered. 😉

I don’t eat much protein powder because it is super expensive!
And yes it was a holiday in Boston yesterday, so fun!

I don’t really eat protein shakes anymore. I used to drink them back in the day when I first became a vegetarian but now I just want whole foods. Mashed Potato Sister — too funny 🙂

I’m not big on protein powders either, but I’d give it a try in a smoothie. I’m cutting back my soy intake, so it does sound interesting.

I’ve been using Nativa Hemp Protein in my pre-workout smoothies, and I really love it. Whole Foods had it buy one, get one free … so I got a $14 tub of it for FREE! Couldn’t pass that up!

Why not chocolate-covered mashed potatoes? I actually discovered chocolate-covered potato chips in a local high-end grocery store here in Victoria recently!

I’m not in love with the Nutribiotic, but I don’t mind it…which for a protein powder, says quite a bit!

I am not a protein powder person either, but my brother is, and he is always on the market for a good tasting and low carb/sugar one to use. Thank you for the reccomendation, Katie! You are such a darling.

I drink protein shakes a few times a week. They seem to make me feel a bit more full than I would otherwise. That said, i don’t really love any of them. They all kind of taste like chalk to me. If you add enough banana though, it can cover that up!

ive used this brand before and i really do like it. although i use vanilla- i think its just as fab. it truly is a good quality- and uses enzymatically altered brown rice.. so its easily digestable. great post <3

I haven’t tried that protein powder, but you can’t go wrong with chocolate!
I agree, not to much need for protein powder, but it has its place.

I have not tried NutriBiotic before, I have seen it stores. I am not a fan of eating a lot of powder either, it just does not sit well in my tummy. And I am a Vega girl
Veggiesmack says
I don’t use a lot of protein powder because too much protein tends to gum up my digestive system. 🙁
However, when I do use protein powder, Spirutein is just abou the only one I can stand, and I usually use about twice the liquid they recommend to dilute the funky protein texture. I tried Jay Robb and couldn’t get past the first two sips.

I entered! Thanks for the giveaway! I agree that sometimes it’s just fun to add into things, but sometimes I find mixing in some protein powder into a smoothie will help me get through a busy day (when my meals are all packed and quick- and maybe lacking some protein). It only is a fun way to add in chocolate to meals! 🙂

A protein powder we even have in Canada. Nice!
I’m with you on the protein powder front – I don’t eat it so much because I need more protein in my diet, but because I enjoy it in certain foods. I like the way it works in a smoothie, so I keep some on hand for that, and I’ll throw it into other things as the mood strikes me. But I don’t have it every day.
