The Magic of PMS

by Chocolate-Covered Katie on June 6, 2010

Isn’t PMS wonderful?

If you didn’t answer right away with an exuberant “YES!” then read on to learn how you can love PMS … well, one form of PMS, anyway! A few weeks ago, y’all left great suggestions for healthy dessert makeovers. One of your suggestions was so interesting I had to try it out right away: healthy Magic Shell

msh

The first thing I did was look up the ingredients in real Magic Shell. Turns out that the “magic” of Magic Shell is actually coconut oil.  Who knew?! Check it out: Sugar, sunflower oil, coconut oil, cocoa, chocolate, Contains 2% or less of: cocoa processed with alkali, soy lecithin, salt, vanilla, milk

Then I had to decide which ingredients to include in the recreation. Right off the bat, milk was out (Duh! lol).  And I figured the homemade version could do without soy lecithin, sunflower oil, salt, and vanilla as well. (You can still add vanilla if you want; I just didn’t bother.)  So I gathered everything else: coconut oil, cocoa powder, and sweetener. Not very many ingredients, huh? I was skeptical… but it turns out I needn’t have been!  One test of the mixture sent the tastebuds into ecstasy (the legal kind!).

So what about PMS? Well, call me crazy, but that’s what I’ve decided to name the Magic Shell.  PMS: Pseudo Magic Shell, get it? Besides, isn’t chocolate supposedly good for the real PMS?

.

Pseudo Magic Shell (PMS)

  • 1 serving of Chocolate Butter
  • Something to go under the chocolate coating, such as: bananas, ice cream, strawberries, cake (for cake balls), nuts, oatmeal (Magic Shell oatmeal???!!), cookie dough balls, dried fruit, pretzels, fudge babies (especially peanut butter babies!)…

1. For ice cream or frozen fruit (or anything pre-frozen), simply melt the chocolate butter and pour over the confection (or dip).

2. For non-frozen items, melt and pour/dip, then freeze for a few minutes prior to eating.

Question of the Day:

Isn’t PMS wonderful?  Hehe, now that you’ve read this post, your answer’s supposed to be “yes!” P.S. How much do you want to kill every boy who’s ever asked you, “Is it that time of the month?” To all the boys/men reading this: never ask us that question! ;)

I love how you molded the chocolate bars in waxed paper! Very creative. I was never a fan of Magic Shell, but you may have won me over for PMS! ;)

That pretty much sounds like the best thing I’ve ever heard. You can’t go wrong with chocolate AND cookie dough! :)

well im not sure if id use the phrase “wonderful” to describe it HEHE…. but it definitely gives us an excuse to adore our chocolate a little more! ohhhhh such horrible memories come to my mind in high school, of boys saying “she’s just angry cuz she’s got her ___ ” URrrGGhh! haha

do boys not realize that psm also makes us angry and that they should be careful what they say around us unless they want the claws to come out!

Hahaha! I love how you used PMS to introduce this creation. Actually, I’ve never even heard of a magic shell! However, maybe I’ll have to try it now that yours sound so tempting. Chocolate is truly a cure-all!

Have a lovely day!

I used to love magic shell so much! Your version of it looks delicious and so much healthier than the store bought version. Next time I buy coconut oil, I will be making this right away!

You are so funny with the PMS thing. Giggle!
I used to love Chocolate Shell. I loved the crunchiness of it. I actually just saw a recipe for this on another site and they only used like 3 ingredients, coconut oil, chocolate and something else.

I think it’s beyond rude when guys make “that time of the month” remarks. Like they would know ANYTHING about PMS (bad kind)?! It just comes off as kind of an inappropriate sexist stereotype. Plus, I never get “bitchy” before my period, I just get killer cramps. Doesn’t effect how I treat others!

Hooray for you turning PMS into a good thing!

I want to go make a chocolate bar- yum. Actually I did something similar to that when I made chocolate for a peanut butter pie I made for my Dad’s birthday (I’m still salivating- it was a recipe from The Kind Diet!). There was leftover peanut butter chocolate and it was yummy! Actually…. I still have some…..

Wahoo!
I made PMS bars! And can I just say that you are 100%, no 1000000%, correct when you say it is the BEST chocolate bar you will ever eat. My tongue was thanking me for… well it is STILL thanking me for this! So I had to come thank YOU!
Thank you thank you! And now I must go to eat some more! :) :)

I don’t like PMS, but I like the medicine for it! ;)

I love crunchy Magic Shell, good to know the ingredients aren’t so terrible just in case I don’t want to make anything from scratch and I’m in a PMS pinch, lol! Your version sounds wonderful, though! YUMM

Oh my gosh who would’ve thought that coconut oil is the magic ingredient. It makes sense! And yes I agree, PMS is wonderful lol. It’s funny because I don’t get cranky when I’m on my period, but if I’m in a bad mood it’s simply because I’m annoyed hahaha!

XOXO lovely lady!

I thought you were going to say PMS is wonderful because it is an excuse to eat more chocolate! :)

Reply

Chocolate-Covered Katie June 6, 2010 at 9:25 pm

Devyn,
LOL! I’ve long given up looking for excuses to eat chocolate. There just aren’t enough excuses in existence for the amount of chocolate I wish to consume :) :) .

spoonfulofsugarfree June 6, 2010 at 10:12 pm

Oh my gosh! That is so cool that coconut oil can do that. I knew coconut oil would harden on ice cream, but I didn’t know that “magic shell” store-bought brand used coconut oil!

Justine June 6, 2010 at 10:20 pm

Luckily, my boyfriend knows not to ask that question. :)
You are so ridiculously creative with your recipes! Even if you come up with something that doesn’t tempt my taste buds (I am still afraid of tofu) I am always intrigued.

Aww katie you are so cute. And yes this is fantastic.
AND YES – my ex would always blame me being mad at him on PMS. NO! I’m just mad at you! My current boy knows never to use those words, although he does have a tendency to say “So, when are you getting your period?” when I get irritable. Jerk-y!
PS – I’ve made so much chocolate butter in recent days that I went through my cocoa powder three times as fast as normal!

This recipe looks so good Katie! I always thought the bottled magic shell sounded so delicious…it reminded me of those soft serve DQ cones where you can get chocolate or vanilla dip and the shell hardens..my dad used to eat those all the time but I’ve been lactose intolerant all my life (so I didn’t eat dairy pre-vegan days). PMS looks and sounds delicious…although that sentence sounds very strange.
I think its annoying for men to assume they know anything about “that time of the month”…because they really don’t. And the truth is, they usually don’t want to know anything about it anyway. So why bother asking?

I just found your blog today and already I’m already addicted and made your one minute chocolate cake, which my kids and I GOBBLED up (and it’s totally the BEST microwavable cake EVER!)! I tried to make the PMS to go on top, but I’m not sure it turned out right! I’ve never used the cocao bliss before and didn’t know what kind of texture it should have. It tastes really yummy, but is kind of crumbly looking (and tasting). There’s no way that is melting down to look as gooey and soft as yours did. Should I add more water? Or maybe honey, since I don’t have any agave? I also tried to roll it out in wax paper to make bars in the freezer and I seemed to have a lot of coconut oil coming out… is that normal too? Thank you!

Reply

Chocolate-Covered Katie December 6, 2011 at 2:19 am

Hmmm… what sweetener did you use? If it’s crumbly, maybe your coconut oil hardened too quickly? Can you try melting it (for just a few seconds) in the microwave?

Reply

Janeal December 6, 2011 at 4:53 am

I used honey since that was what I had on hand. It tastes great and froze really well, it just didn’t reheat smoothly at all. I tried it for a few seconds in the microwave, stirring, and trying a few more seconds, and ended up burning it trying to get it to smooth out. I’ve never used or even seen the cocao bliss, so I wasn’t sure what texture it normally had either. I’m actually heading to the store to buy garbonzo beans RIGHT now so that I can try your blondies and cookie dough dip. Yum!

Again, the miraculous Katie pulls through with creative ideas for those of us who can’t do dairy, gluten, or sugar! What are your suggestions, Katie, in order to create sugar free sugar free chocolate chips? You know, to get a the shape right? You rock! My mom made me your spice cake for Christmas with the cashew icing and it was awesome!

I don’t know :-? . Maybe they make molds like that?

I was thinking of looking for a Hershey Kiss mold and making “kisses” to put on my peanut butter cookies :) .

Ruth December 30, 2011 at 2:59 am

Yeah, that’s a good Idea :) I’ll look for something suitable at the place where I can pick up candy molds really cheap

Hey Katie, I don’t know if you ever check your old posts, but using your magic post I just made an amazing Peanut Butter Magic Shell sauce.

3 tbs peanut butter
2 tbs coconut oil
2 tsp raw honey

Blend until smooth, pour over Volume Ice Cream and top with chocolate shavings, chocolate chips or a second layer of chocolate magic shell for a reesee’s sundae! So decadent my fiance grabbed my bowl half-way through and told me “I don’t believe this is diet friendly, you’re going to regret it if you eat the whole bowl!” I got the bowl back though… :D Let me know what you think if you try it!!!

And I found a hershey’s kisses candy mold for only a couple of bucks! It was at Bulk Barn (Canadian Chain), yes, I live up north, I need chocolate to stay warm!!). They also have a heart shaped spring form pan and some silicone heart shaped muffin pans I think I will buy next week. I’ve been frustrated so far using regular muffin pans for gluten free baking and someone suggested silicone.
