Peanut Butter Covered Strawberries

Forget chocolate.

peanut butter strawberries

Okay, no wait.

I didn’t say that!

You didn’t hear that! Don’t ever ever ever forget chocolate. Never ever. NEVER!!!

But maybe…

Maybe just put the chocolate aside for today (or for an hour; however long you can last), and try out this peanut butter twist on the classic chocolate-covered strawberries:

peanut butter covered strawberries

They’re like all-natural peanut butter and jelly bites. Smile

And very stupid-simple to make.

peanut butter strawberries

Peanut Butter Strawberries

(gluten-free and can be sugar-free)

  • 4 tbsp peanut butter (or another nut butter, or sunbutter)
  • 1 tsp virgin coconut oil (see “nutrition link” below, for substitution notes)
  • stevia drops to taste, or 1.5 tsp agave or maple syrup
  • fresh strawberries (or bananas, or other foods to dip)

Have a parchment or wax-lined baking sheet ready to go (and clear space in your freezer). Put all ingredients, except berries, in a cereal-sized bowl, and stir until well-combined. If your nut butter is from the fridge, you might need to heat it a little for easier stirring. Dip berries (or bananas, or pretzels, truffles, or whatever you desire), set onto the tray, and immediately freeze. Due to the nature of coconut oil, these are best kept cold.

Maybe, just maybe, you can eat a chocolate bar on the side.

Question of the Day:

What’s your favorite brand of peanut butter?

Or do you prefer something else, like almond butter? I usually buy Whole Foods 365 organic peanut butter: it’s unsweetened, lightly-salted, and cheap enough that I don’t have to feel guilty going through a ton of jars!

  1. Yum! I don’t really care for strawberries (a texture thing), so I’ll have to try this with truffles or something.

I love peanut butter, but I’d have to say I prefer sunflower seed butter from Trader Joe’s. That stuff is delicious. I could eat a whole jar in one day!

  2. Ashley Dodge says:

I never thought about putting peanut butter on strawberries, and it seems like a fabulous change! You’re so creative! :)

    1. I never thought to do this, either! Although, I have found myself dipping just about everything in PB lately 😉

  3. Kathy says:

I can’t wait to make these, but I think after I dip them in peanut butter and allow them to firm, I will dip them also in chocolate. Gotta get the chocolate in somehow, what can I say. Looks delicious!!

    1. Ashley says:

      That is a great idea!

    2. sPeeDeeBee says:

Did you? And…how was it? 😀

  4. These look DELISH! I can’t wait to try them and all the ingredients are staples
    I already have!!! :)
    -Grace Gilbert

  5. Or maybe you should do chocolate AND peanut butter covered strawberries!? 😉

    1. I like the way you think 😉 *drools at the thought*

  6. You know that’s so simple and seems like duh, but I haven’t ever tried actual strawberries dipped in PB so that is a great call!

  7. Do you think this would work with PB2?

    1. laura says:

I’m not Katie, of course, but I’m guessing as long as your tastebuds are fine with it, you would be fine.

      1. laura says:

You might just need a bit of water or oil, but the coconut butter might be wet enough.

  8. Alison says:

Why did I not think of this before?!

  9. By the way, I think these would be really good rolled in chocolate chips!

  10. Sasha says:

I’m with Kathy (et al), why stop at peanut butter? No need to forget the chocolate!! YUM!

  11. Yumm! My favourite is banana and PB :)

  12. Rachel says:

oo yum! I love Justin’s peanut butter.. soo good haha

  13. Jamie says:

I’m obsessed with Justin’s Vanilla Almond Butter. It’s so good I almost can’t mix it into anything and just have to eat it off the spoon…

  14. Jenny says:

An all natural danich brand from Irma.

I want to dip chocolate cookies in the dip

    1. Jenny says:

ohh, please make pb chips, in Denmark they are so expencive because they are importet.

  15. Jasmin says:

Ummm…. such an obvious idea yet I’ve never thought of it before! I love cashew butter at the moment…. and to think I never even knew it existed until a few weeks ago!

  16. Laura says:

My favorite lightened-up brands of peanut butter are PB2 (which comes in powdered form and really cuts the calories by avoiding the oil) and Better ‘N Peanut Butter (which only has 100 cals per 2 tbsp instead of 200). You can find them both at Whole Foods!

    1. Sarah says:

I love these too! They are amazing products!

  17. Alan says:

mmm these sound yummy and as others have said I think a double dip with chocolate could be quite good.

Personally I don’t buy actual Peanut Butter, I get Bulk Peanuts and make Peanut Butter myself in my food processor. I get DRY Roasted Peanuts, which I think gives it the best taste without added oil from most roasted nuts out there. When I make my own I don’t add a single thing, no salt, no oil, no sweetener.
I have made quite a few butters in this matter; Peanut Butter, Cashew Butter, Almond Butter and Sun flower Butter. I would like to try making Hazelnut Butter but im worried about the density of the nut and also I’ve been thinking about trying Soy Nuts.

    1. Liz says:

Hazelnut Butter is yummy and you should try Chocolate-Covered Katie’s Nutella recipe…it’s in our fridge now and it is DELICIOUS!

      1. Homemade Roasted Pecan Butter is to die for! I make it all the time and my family cannot get enough!

  18. Marianne says:

Hi Katie! Soooo do you eat these guys frozen then? My bf and I have very sensitive teeth and I would definitely want to try making these for him, but wouldn’t be able to serve them frozen. Does the peanut butter remain hard after you take them out of the freezer? Can I keep them in the fridge instead?

Would dipping them in another layer of chocolate after doing the peanut butter keep the peanut butter dip from getting too soft if served at fridge temperature?

Thanks :) P.S. LOVE your site.

    1. Jules says:

Omg, peanut butter and then chocolate on top of that sounds AMAZING i have to try that, great idea!!

  19. I can’t actually eat peanut butter anymore, but… Smucker’s Organic Creamy was my favorite. That, or making my own!

That reminds me, you should totally make a healthified buckeye recipe! That drippy peanut butter just looks similar… Haha :)

  20. Kara says:

I love Barney Butter smooth almond butter. It is soooooooo good.

  21. Georgia says:

Does anyone know of a good place to get affordable fresh ground almond butter? In Atlanta, I get it at Dekalb Farmer’s Market for $4.99 / lb., but I hear Trader Joe’s has it for $3.99 / lb??? I *heart* almond butter….wait, I *HEART* chocolate, but I do love almond butter too ^_^

    1. Sue says:

I’m also in Atlanta, and I imagine fresh-ground is indeed probably cheapest at YDFM (have never seen fresh-ground at TJ’s). But you can try Sevananda (in L5) or Rainbow Natural Foods (on N Decatur).

  22. Awesome idea on a modern classic 😉 I say peanut butter has a way of just making everything better! I would love to try that coconut oil/peanut butter mix on a banana too!
I prefer just making my own peanut butter in my food processor- I find it cheaper and I always enjoy mixing up the add-ins to create my custom flavored PB!

  23. Omg this is genius and I’m not sure why I’ve never thought of it before! I think it would also be delicious to dip them in dark chocolate- then it would be like reese’s flavored strawberries…mmm. Or it would be great to cover them in mini chocolate chips! Haha obviously chocolate needs to happen in some form!

  24. j3nn says:

    Fabulous idea! Grain-free PB&J-ish. YUMMMMY! :)

  25. What a great idea! I love combining fiber-licious fruits with sweet tasting toppings – like peanut butter. Yum!

  26. I really love peanut butter Co’s flavors, but I also love just plain old peanut butter. Haha I don’t think you can go wrong!

  27. Megan S. says:

I am currently LOVING Earth Balance Coconut Peanut Butter! I put it on everything…. or I like to eat it with a spoon! 😉

Other than “nut butters”, I love Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter or Lotus Creamy Biscoff Spread! Delicious! Katie, have you ever tried those? They’re vegan, I think!

    1. CCK lover says:

Megan, I found Earth Balance Coconut Peanutbutter and fell in LOVE! It is soooo good! I put it on all types of food – pretzels, apples, carrots, bananas, crackers, and even ice cream! I bought a whole case of it so I don’t run out. When I first bought it, I devoured the jar much too quickly, and when I realized I was out, I made some toast with regular Peanutbutter. But it was gross and I couldn’t finish it. I used to love it, but Earth Balance Coconut Peanut butter was so good that compared to normal it tastes bad. Anyway, I’ve gotten side tracked here, but as you can see I love it. … Hmm I can’t remember what I was going to say. I think I’m going to go eat some peanut butter.

      1. CCK lover says:

        Blah, excuse my bad grammar.
What I was trying to say was:
I used to love normal peanut butter, but after I started eating Earth Balance, I didn’t like normal peanut butter because I was comparing it to the goodness of Earth Balance

  28. Marta says:

Archer’s Farms Almond, Peanut & Cashew Butter from Target is a special treat at my house.

  29. Colleen says:

Costco’s Kirkland brand is pretty awesome, super cheap!! It USED to be organic, but Kirkland switched to conventional when there was a peanut shortage last year and haven’t switched back. Just store it up-side-down a day or two before you stir it, to make mixing easier! Here is a post about how awesome “natural nut butters” are for your health and some fun ways to eat it! Katie, I just adore your site! You genius, you! Have a great day everyone!

  30. I’ve done this before with straight-up peanut butter (no sweetener or coconut oil). You definitely have to keep them cold since the lack of coconut oil means they don’t set up all that well, but they’re so good!

  31. YUM! This is my favorite kind of recipe – delicious and simple, but something I NEVER would have thought of. I am sooooo making this!

Ever since I started buying the freshly ground raw unsalted peanut butter you get near the bulk bins at health food stores, I can’t eat anything else. It is addictive and amazing!!!

  32. I have a confession to make – I really dislike peanut butter. I have tried and tried to like it, because there is such an emphasis on it among American food bloggers, but I just don’t like it!
I miss out on a lot of great recipes because of it.
I do make up for it, however, with my love of Nutella and Pecan Butter :)

  33. Katie, you are so mean!!! Do you know that strawberry season is over where I live? That it’s just over? Just like,… 2 or 3 weeks ago?

  34. Oh and I prefer Almond butter, my all time favorite. However, I like peanut butter, too! There has to be a change every now and then!

  35. Mary says:

    I have two favorites:

    1. Fresh ground peanuts – nothing else. Publis and Fresh Market carry it. If I have a sweet craving, I’ll stir in some organic honey.

    2. Peanut Wonder – it’s already a bit sweeter and creamier than regular peanut butter (with WAY less fat and calories), so I think I’ll use it for this recipe.

    Thanks Katie!

  36. Tricia says:

I love love love this idea!! I don’t have strawberries in my dorm, but I do have bananas and I would love to try this out tomorrow morning with breakfast!

  37. Brin says:

Do we get fall recipes in the fall?

  38. laura says:

Funny, I was just going to ask which brand of peanut butter you used. I usually use skippy or jif’s naturals. I haven’t tried any other kinds of nut butter(including coconut!) We have a couple of the brands in the picture for almond butter, but I’ve yet to see any others.

  39. strawberries and peanut butter — perfect!! great combo!

  40. Sarah the official CCK drooler says:

fave brand? JIF organic. don’t judge :)

  41. Christy says:

I’m embarrassed to say this but I’m kind of a peanut butter snob. A tea one too but that’s another topic all on its own. Ha!! As far as the peanut butter thing, if its not all natural and/ or organic then BLAHH!! I don’t like anything added to my peanut butter. Oh and if I haven’t said this b4, I love your blog and can’t wait to make those pumpkin balls in the previous post. We are gluten and dairy free so it’s another fun one I can easily change.

  42. I love creamy Jiff All Natural!! so good!

  43. Quix says:

So simple, but I can’t wait to try it! I saw the picture and was like… how did she make it creamier (and coconut oil makes so much delicious sense :D). I really like chocolate almond butter (MarthaNartha or something like that), but my husband likes Sun Butter so we get that more often.

  44. Aja says:

That sounds SO good. I must have these now! They’re so quick too. What if you dipped them in chocolate afterward? I think I just died.

  45. Oh wow, This is so simple and sounds so lush!
Its kinda of like PB and Jelly. But just the strawberry – not the jam.
This is idea, Thanks Katie xx

  46. Anything’s good dipped in pb. My personal fave is sunbutter. I also really like better than peanut butter and pb2.

  47. Eilish says:

I love peanut butter and co dark choclate dreams and cinnamon raisin. If u mix Em together it is pure heaven in your mouth!

  48. Albizia says:

I wish I could say I love all brands but some of them are simply gross. And sometimes even good brands make a bad product. The white chocolate pb of Peanut Butter and Co. is one of the worst I’ve ever tried and I paid a small fortune for it here in Japan. I think my favorite is Justin’s but I can’t find it anymore :(

  49. Sarah says:

yum–I love to dip strawberries in Justin’s Chocolate Almond Butter, it’s so good.

  50. 2 of my absolute favorite foods. almond butter and strawberries is fantastic too!

  51. Michele says:

I do prefer AB, yet PB has been Crazy Richards lately. Just peanuts at a good price. I like Aja’s idea of dipping in chocolate after frozen :)

  52. angela, says:

Ok two questions: Do these get runny when they are defrosted, like if you were to serve them at a party and they sat out for a little while. AND is there a way to maybe cover them in chocolate and peanut butter? Cause really the only thing better than peanut butter and chocolate is peanut butter and chocolate on a strawberry!

    1. Alanna says:

I’m guessing if you did one layer and let it freeze completely, you could then repeat the process to add a second layer on top… Try Katie’s recipe for chocolate “magic shell”:

  53. Debbie says:

I’ll have to try this soon, I just put all my strawberries in the freezer. I like pb2 or make my own in the vitamix.

  54. Jules says:

hi Katie! I really want to start drinking more green smoothies and I was wondering if maybe you could put up a few of your favorites? Or maybe even make a new tab for them! I need a good way to get more veggies ! :) Thanks! And, I love all your recipes !!!

    1. Jules says:

oh and I LOVE Trader Joe’s natural chunky peanut butter, DELICIOUS

  55. Favorite brand of nut(ish) butter: I.M. Healthy Chocolate Soynut butter, I.M. Healthy creamy soynut butter, and (my personal like thus far) Biscoff creamy spread. We have a bunch of food allergies in my house between my daughter and me so I have to use the most allergy friendly stuff out there. I love this pb strawberries recipe. I think I can get my big-kid-Marine-husband to actually snack on them, and considering they are healthy enough for him to eat without going overboard (he’s a cookie monster, downing packages in one sitting). YAY!

  56. First things first- MMMMMM. But here’s my suggestion: after dipping in the PB, THEN dip in chocolate. Because PB/Chocolate combos never get old.

And my favorite nutbutter? I love me some of the new Jif Hazelnut Mocha Spread, Almond Butter, and when I need to be a little bit healthier, Better ‘N Peanut Butter. But mostly the mocha spread. Also, I like the cinnamon raisin by PB and Co but Planters is now making some with granola clusters! (squeals excitedly). I love nut butter. I really do. If I was allergic… things would be very sad.

  57. Diandra says:

You are an evil woman. Combining my two all-time favorite foods into one healthy snack… how am I going to survive that?? (Honestly, sometime this summer the BF stated that I only consisted of strawberry and evil. He knows best.)

  58. I had to check twice to make sure this was CCK when you said forget chocolate. I thought I might be in some alternate universe.
Luckily you changed your tune around :)

I have never thought about putting peanut butter on strawberries, even though I put the two flavors together all the time in sandwich form.

Does the peanut butter harden up at all or does it stay soft? Just trying to think ahead if I were to bring this to a picnic or covered dish.

  59. curious says:

where do you typically go grocery shopping? i find that buying organic/whole grain, etc tends to be a little expensive. do you usually shop at whole foods or do you go other places?

  60. I have to laugh! My blog button is a straberry dipped in peanut butter! I love the combination together!!! My favorite nutbutter is my homemad nut butter otherwise I like Trader Joe’s Almond Flax Nut Butter or Justin’s.

  61. Hi Katie, These look amazing! Just realized that I never got back to you this summer. Sorry about that- travel was busy and there was 8 weeks of it! If you’d still like to connect, let me know!

  62. It’s like pb&j without the bread. Love it <3

  63. Katie – it’s like you secretly entered my PB giveaway without trying. These pics looks great! Great idea. x

  64. Ahhhh how did I never think of peanut butter on strawberries?? This idea is brilliant! :)

  65. Mimi says:

I dont eat pb for health reasons but I make chocolate almond butter, so I will definitely try this with my butter.

  66. Audrea says:

I have a new love sunflower is amazing.

  67. Jen says:

I really like Smart Balance pb :)

  68. Is the nutritional information based on one strawberry or all 15?

  69. Awbrey says:

That. Is. Great. I love peanut butter. And strawberries. But never thought of dipping strawberries in p.b. before. Also never thought of adding coconut oil to p.b. to make it harden.. So many possibilities!

  70. Shannon says:

Question: How does 4 tablespoons of peanut butter and 15 strawberries equal out to only 32 calories? I have natural peanut butter and it’s 95 calories for just 1 tablespoon. How is it possible that you can have 4 tbs PLUS 15 strawberries and only get 32 calories?

    1. Alanna says:

It says in the nutrition info it’s based off of 15 strawberries and all the dip, although as you already pointed out, it’s pretty obvious that you can’t possibly have 32 calories in the entire recipe with 4 T of PB and coconut oil.

      1. Shannon says:

So then what would the nutritional information be referring to if not the entire recipe she’s described?

        1. Alanna says:

My goodness; you’re making this far more complicated than it needs to be. The calorie info is per strawberry with PB coating:

PB averages 100 cal per 1 Tbsp, or 400 in 4 Tbsp
Coconut oil is 120 cal per 1 Tbsp, or 40 in 1 tsp
medium sized whole strawberries are 58 cal for 15 (from
Total = 498 calories, which divided by 15 is about 33 calories per PB-coated strawberry

Everyone’s actual count will be a little different depending on what PB used (ranges from 190-210 calories per 2 T), how large your berries are, and how much coating you use per berry. It’s never going to be an exact thing.

  71. Bek @ Crave says:

I have done this using just natural pb and it is good! Strawberries and almond butter also work :) I usually buy woolworths macro organic brand because it is the only one that has no added oils, sugar or salt. Completely natural 😉

  72. I love Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter – ill bet that would be amazing in this recipe!! Yumm-o!

    1. Jules says:

  73. I am going to try this with banana slices tonight. I think it will be the perfect healthy snack to eat while I curl up in front of the tv :)

I like Whole Foods Organic Smooth PB the best so far

  74. Haha. I could never forget about chocolate. It’s just not possible. I’d probably add mini chocolate chips to these peanut butter covered strawberries anyways. 😉

  75. Christine says:

I’m going to use this to top banana oatmeal pancakes instead of syrup

  76. Trajayjay says:

I prefer to make my own pb out of great value peanuts (unsalted) but I prefer jiff to skippy. Skippy tastes a bit more like melted tire than jiff to me.

  77. Erica says:

can i melt ur vegan peanut butter chips and dip the strawberries into them insead?

  78. Diandra says:

Have I ever mentioned you need a PRINT button? Generally I am all against printing the internet, but our home is offline!

    1. Unofficial CCK Helper says:

It’s relatively easy to print Katie’s recipes. Highlight just the recipe itself, and right-click “Copy.” Then open a new Word document, and right-click “Paste.” You can name and save this file (say, in a CCK Recipe folder), and print it readily as needed.

  79. abbie says:

Where can I get coconut oil, and is it expensive? I see it in a lot of your recipes, but have never used it or bought it in the past!

    1. Unofficial CCK Helper says:

I’ve seen it at WalMart! Or Whole Foods brand is about $6 a jar!

  80. Jenna says:

Tried with PB2 – 0/10 would not recommend. Use regular PB.
