The Chocolate Fudge Protein Shake
Can be soy-free / dairy-free / low-calorie / low-fat / and no added sugar!
Above, topped with Homemade Reddi-Wip.
Chocolate Fudge Protein Shake
(serves 1)
- 1 cup milk of choice
- 2 tsp Dutch cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp chocolate protein powder of choice
- 1 overripe frozen banana (banana-free protein shake here)
- 1/16 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
- optional sweetener (I didn’t need any, but it depends on your protein powder)
- optional 1-2 tbsp nut butter of choice
Blend all ingredients—either with a hand blender or in a blender or Vitamix—until completely smooth. Serve chilled. Note: I’ve not tried this recipe with non-Dutch cocoa powder, but you can always experiment.

Looks delicious! I make shakes with frozen bananas all the time but have never added protein powder. I’ll definitely need to buy some and try this!

Maybe it’s the fact I’ve lived in Florida my whole life, but I always crave iced coffee and ice cream. But with the humidity as bad as it is here, I’d rather be outside when it’s cooler. The problem is I have an outdoor job!
Steffany says
Could you leave out the protein powder and still achieve the same result?
Karen says
You might want to increase the cocoa powder a bit, but otherwise yes. I have made a smoothie that is just like this recipe but without the protein powder, many, many times and it is delicious!

Thank you!

Whoa, in this post I just saw your link to your homemade whipped cream. I had no idea a whipped cream gadget like that even existed. Getting one asap! Thanks for the fun recipes and the tip!

This is awesome! I would love to make this with some tofu to make it smoother!

i just made something similar yesterday for myself and the kids! I added banana, cocoa powder, cinnamon, honey, spinach, organic peanut butter, hemp protein powder and coconut milk! YUM!
Kristy says
What type of protein powder do you use? I’m trying to find a good protein powder that isn’t whey! Thank you!

Love your recipes and have your book. I just wanted to recommend fair trade coco. I buy in bulk from ‘Equal Exchange’ as it is estimated nearly half the cocoa in the world today is produced by child slaves. Please google that, many lose their lives. I wanted to write you privately Katie and ask you to feature how people might ethically source cocoa. Peace
Dana says
Thank you for writing this. I now buy fair-trade ever since I learned about how coco is produced. I wish more people were aware of it.

That is the perfect protein shake! I’ve been looking for one that is not too-complicated and time-consuming to make after my workouts and this is easy and super delicious.
Will try it tomorrow after my boxing session! =)

This looks amazing! I’m always finding new ways to get some protein in (that tastes good, too!) I definitely am going to try this.

This looks delicious! 🙂
Quick question: Could you leave out protein powder in a recipe like this? I don’t keep it on hand (although I may begin to in the future). Is there something in protein powder which would make this recipe particularly nice in terms of texture of something, or is it just in the recipe because added protein can be nice?

It doesn’t matter if it’s freezing outside or blistering hot: this chocolate shake sounds delicious! Peanut butter would go amazing in it!

I enjoy smoothies & I will make this one but I would use greek yogurt (plain) & a tbsp. of your fudge-in-a-jar plus organic cocoa…..I know the calories will be more but I’m not a calorie counter……..especially if something is so healthy. Love your posts…..

Yet another freaking fantastic recipe. This is so simple and delicious. It tastes so decadent, you wouldn’t know it’s one of the healthiest things you could drink. Unbelievably simple: milk, frozen bananas, protein powder and cocoa and I made straight up chocolate milkshakes for dessert that were so tasty, none of my roommates were the wiser. And it was all done in approx 2 minutes using an immersion blender. Thanks so much, Katie.

I don’t use protein powder, but I do have chocolate PB2. So I used that, and it was *delish.*

I love this so much that I know I’ll be making it quite frequently. So to save time I’m storing a dry mix in advance. Here is the recipe for that if anyone wants to use it!
Chocolate Fudge Protein Shake mix (20 servings)
3/4 c Dutch cocoa powder
1 ¼ c chocolate protein powder
1 ¼ tsp salt
2 1/2 tsp Nustevia (optional)
To use: Add a heaping tbsp to 1 c milk, 1 frozen banana and 1/4 tsp vanilla, peanut butter if desired and blend.
Note – if you use PB2 like I do, add 1 ¼ c to the dry mix and add 1/8 cup of mix to your shake.
Hopefully I got the math right! I used an online recipe converter and a calculator, and did a little rounding. 🙂

OK it works! Made one this morning!
