These paleo and vegan chocolate layer bars can be made with just a few ingredients and NO refined sugar.

The green hue is achieved naturally – with avocado!

Magical Chocolate Dragon Bars

These avocado chocolate dragon bars are a truly magical chocolate dessert.

Yield 9 – 12 bars

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup mashed ripe avocado
  • 1/2 cup coconut butter
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup, honey, or agave
  • pinch uncut stevia OR 2 additional tbsp each pure maple syrup and coconut butter
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/16 tsp salt
  • 3 oz chocolate chips (see note below for substitution)

Instructions

  • *If you’d prefer, you can omit the chocolate chips and instead combine equal parts maple syrup, cocoa powder, and melted coconut oil to make a chocolate sauce.
    Recipe: Line an 8-inch pan with parchment or wax. Blend all ingredients except chocolate in a food processor or blender until completely smooth. (See video for a visual of the recipe being made.) Smooth into the prepared pan. Carefully melt the chocolate so it does not burn. Smooth over the pan. Freeze. I take the pan out after 10 minutes to cut into bars before the chocolate hardens completely. Store bars in the freezer.

    I was going to ask the same thing as Theresa. Any substitutions for coconut butter? I’ve read that almond butter can we used but do you think that would make it taste funky? Thanks!

      You can always experiment. Or perhaps cacao butter. Be sure to report back for other readers if you experiment.

    Ooo these sound so creamy and dreamy! Gotta love all the healthy fats. This would be such a fun treat to serve at a little kid birthday party to because of the whole dragon part. I bet they would think they’re so cool!

    I just can’t seem to get on the avacado train. I wish I could I’ve tried. Do these taste like Chocolate avacado?

      They honestly don’t. I think the other flavors mask it well, but you could always be extra sure by adding a little pure peppermint extract and then it would pretty much guarantee no avocado taste whatsoever.

    What flavour is the bottom section? I’m also not a fan of avocado, so I’m hoping you can’t taste it 😉 Also, would these be any good with mint extract added to the base?

      Was just thinking pure peppermint extract would work well. Use a little to start because it is potent.

    Ah, so Game of Thrones was the purpose behind these avocado bars! These treats look wonderful! Also, just to let you know, I keep making your zucchini cake over and over again. It’s absolutely delicious!

    My goodness, Katie. What has happened to your blog? You just have the same recipes on repeat with a slightly different version of something you have made before. It is obvious that you are all tapped out of ideas and, wow, does it ever show. Why not just retire the blog and move on to something else? Your recipes are now so boring, unimaginative and uncreative. What a shame that you continue to post.

        Michelle, why don’t you school yourself on what it actually means to troll. I am not trolling Katie. I used to love chocolatecoveredkatie and her recipes were great and they were innovative. Confronting an issue is not trolling. Katie knows how incredible her posts were years ago. Now they are not. Look at the sugar filled strawberry recipe she posted today. For some reason, I keep checking in to see if she has something different but there never is. That is upsetting to watch a blogger’s creativity peak after a couple of years.

    Hi everyone I made this recipe and my thoughts. If you plan on using a high powered blender double the recipe. It was very challenging to blend with such a small amount. Vitamix need the tamper and I should have doubled the recipe. But a food processor would have worked I just don’t have one! Just input on someone who made it. Thanks Katie for all the great recipes from a loyal fan!

    Is that equal parts by WEIGHT or equal parts by VOLUME? Yeah, it makes a difference. 😉

    I love my digital scale… I write the weights down on each recipe ONCE, then I don’t have to fool around with getting measuring cups all messy with coconut oil and nut butters; I just hit the ZERO/TARE button and keep on rockin’! Mine isn’t sensitive enough to do sub-gram measurements, but oh well, it’s still easier than measuring.

    These are my new favourite! Super easy, quick, and super delish. I’ve made this recipe about twice a week for the last month. I have an extra small food processor, so that helps when blending such a small amount. Also, I added a dash of peppermint extract (the real stuff) the last time and that really took it over the top! Mint-chocolate…. yum!
