Brought to you by Princess Consuela, herself.
(Yes, another Friends reference. Seems I may have an obsession that is only rivaled by my fudge baby obsession…)
Mike: Do you even know what a ‘banana hammock’ is?
Phoebe: It’s a funny word!
Mike: It’s a Speedo.
Okay, so if you weren’t a Friends-watcher, you’ll have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about. Just ignore the above and scroll down.
Today’s post centers around one of my recent favorite snacks: It’s not a creative, CCK-invented recipe (i.e. I’m sure you’ve all seen stuffed bananas before). But the silly name just makes it so much more fun to eat.
Banana Hammocks
- 1 banana, peeled
- Nut butter of choice
- Fun toppings: dried fruits, nuts, coconut, mesquite powder, maca, etc.
- Chocolate! (nibs, shavings, chips, syrup, crumbled fudge babies, cocoa…)
It’s pretty simple to make, but here are directions *just in case*: Slice the banana down the middle and spread both sides with the nut butter. Go to town with the toppings. Smush together. See: fool-proof!
Wouldn’t you agree that the above version is much more delicious-looking than Sacha Baron Cohen’s banana hammock?
If you don’t agree, please keep it to yourself!
Question of the Day:
What in the name of Sam Hill were Sacha Baron Cohen and John Mayer thinking to wear such a garment in public? Where are their stylists???
What ingredients would you put in your ideal banana hammock?
Steph says
I love that Friend’s episode. Wasn’t Mike’s name ‘Crap Box’ or something like that? haha. For the record, SBC’s banana hammock doesn’t even compare to yours!
Terri says
I just watched it, again today! It is ‘Crap Bag’! LOL
Pam says
Those looks REALLY good….the banana hammocks…NOT Sasha…lol!
U R SEW FUNNY GURL!….thanks for that!
Enjoy!
Jessica says
Yum yum! My ideal toppings would be plain PB, cocoa nibs, mini-chocolate chips, and coconut.
Jo says
Ok – i know you are vegan so can’t have this but when I was little we used to stuff bananas with mars bars, wrap in tinfoil and bake them in the oven (this then morphed into banana and mars bars toasties!!!) – but I am sure you have something you could substitute for mars bars – I LOVE baked bananas.
ps – it was crap bag
Whitney @ Lettuce Love says
When you mentioned banana hammocks earlier this morning, I immediately thought of Phoebe and Crap Bag. I love your Friends references 🙂

Another fun post of course. Bananas and nut butter and dried fruits (gogi, raisins would be nice), and crunch granola/oats sounds good. Fun post again Katie.

ahhaha I burst out laughing when I read this. Too funny. YOUR banana hammock looks amazing..Goji berries and cocoa nibs are a winning combination! I think I would add some vanilla granola ( for some crunch ) coconut and cocoa nibs. Maybe even do one side peanut butter and one side almond butter. =) Maybe even a version with some toasted pecans and a drizzle of honey! The possibilites are endless!
Great post!!

I tried your banana butter today … oooooo it was soo good! Add that with a little melted chocolate chips to my quick steel cut oats and I was in heaven. Just wanted to say thanks for a great wonderful fabulous idea!! Now I am hoping that the artisana butters come my way and I can try coconut banana butter … or cocao bliss banana butter! The possibilities are endless. 🙂 Sending banana butter love your way!

I LOVE BANANA HAMMOCKS! and FRIENDS! ah sorry for all of the caps this post made me extra excited. On my ideal BH: almond butter and chopped cashews.

I am loving your Friends references lately! Oh early millenium, how I miss thee…
Banana hammocks – nom! (I love how wrong that sounds!)
Teresa says
My ideal banana hammock: almond butter, shredded coconut, gojis, cacao nibs, pomegranate arils, and chia seeds!
Now I just wish I was back in South America where I was surrounded by all kinds of bananas. I guess I’ll just have to wait (very patiently) until the baby banana tree in my back yard starts fruiting so I can have local bananas!
The voracious Vegan says
HAHAHAH! GREAT post, Katie! I love banana hammocks…the edible kind, that is. I usually stuff mine with peanut butter, chocolate chips, cacao nibs and, if I’ve got them, goji berries. SO delicious!
Erika says
I would definitely put gobs and gobs of peanut butter in my non-SBC banana hammock. I know they say peanut butter tastes good on everything, but I think you may have found the one thing it would just be too disgusting to try.
By the way, what is mesquite powder?
Nicole, MS, RD, LD says
My dirty mind definitely went to something along the lines of that yellow banana hammock… hehe : )
I would want coconut, definitely coconut! Yum!
Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says
I think that bananas w/ PB are the best snack ever. If I’m ever feeling a little meh, I put sunbutter actually on my nannas. Love it 🙂
Enjoy the snowflakes in the big D!
And thanks in advance for the G.P.
Don’t stress on it, there’s still time so no rush my love, anytime before say Sun/monday would be perfect… 🙂

Hmmm my banana hammock would consist of almond butter mixed with carob or cacao powder or maybe some artisana cacao bliss instead with some dried cherries and a sprinkle of Go Raw simple buckwheat/flax granola.
Mmmm mmm gooooddd. 🙂 Yours is so pertyfyul!
candice says
One of my favorite snacks, though I prefer to chop the banana up into slices and put toppings on. My ideal banana hammock has food in it 😛 Errr, sunflower seed butter, sesame seeds, sea salt, and granola. Mmmmm.
kathleen says
bahahaha!!! I love friends… not so much banana hammocks. or at least the spandex kind.
Katie says
LOVE IT! I am watching Friends now, but not that episode although it is one of my favorites!
Caroline says
Hey Katie,
Those banana hammocks look AWESOME. I can’t wait to try one tonight or tomorrow OR
How about a stuffed apple? You could cut off the top of the apple, scoop out the core, and fill it with peanut butter and stuff. It would be extremely portable!
Bananas are just so darn good though.
Marissa says
That makes me hungry! I guess it’s time for me to break out my nectar bar and cup of tea!
livingfreeforever says
Yeah, that picture is GROSS–not your banana–Borat!
Okay, if I could eat bananas I would put plenty of Sunbutter with chocolate chips and maybe some date pieces and pecan pieces and… 😀

I heard that it snowed this morning in Dallas. Crazy!
Love that you added the kamut flakes to your banana hammock, and the goji berries added some nice color.
My ideal hammock would contain crunchy almond butter, raisins, and dark chocolate chips. Mmm, must make soon!

In my ideal banana hammock i would put jacob black haha jk… sort of 🙂

ohkansascity says
Oooh, that looks delicious. I’ve made something like this before, only heated up (so the chocolate melts) and you leave it in the peel and wrap in tin foil.
Light Delight with Tou Tou says
oh whoa that Banana Hammock looks divine!! I will definitely make one !
Chelsea says
That sounds delicious! It’s crazy I’ve never heard of this simple snack before. I will definitely be trying it out as soon as I get more bananas. (:
Kristie says
Never EVER too many Friends references. It’s the one show that never ever fails to make me laugh. I adore it. Almost as much as I adore banana hammocks. The fruit version. Mr. Cohen’s version just isn’t quite doing it for me.

Friends brightens my day – always!

I always make similar banana hammocks when I am staying at a hotel. They always have perfect ingredients at the continental bfasts!! I usually do pb, jelly, a sprinkle of cereal and raisins!

Hahaha Katie! I LOVED THIS POST
you are the cutest<3
Jenna says
wow! those are so creative!

Jess says
You have just SCARRED me. Seeing John Mayer in that thing ONCE wasn’t enough, I just had to see SBC TWICE?? GAG GAG GAG GAG GAG EW.
And now I have a bad association with banana hammocks and don’t think I could eat one without blushing, which is a shame because I have a sliced banana with PB almost every day, and adding toppings sounds like fun.
Also, why is it you’re either a Friends quoter or a Seinfeld quoter? They’re mutually exclusive?? (I’m in the Seinfeld camp, sorry!)
River - The Crafty Kook says
I’m blind! I’m blind!! Yuck!! Not to your banana hammocks, but Borat’s! Yuck!
Princess Consuela Banana Hammock! That is one of my favorite Friends episodes! 😀
Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) says
That is pure genius. And I didn’t actually know that Friends reference but now that I do I’ll never look at a stuffed nanner the same way again 😀
