Healthy snacks you can take on-the-go


Question for everyone:

Do you have any ideas for portable healthy snacks?

I’ve been trying to post more lunchbox-friendly recipes lately, because kids are going back to school and therefore will have no use for messy recipes like Dark Chocolate Brownie Batter Dip.

A lot of people have been asking me for good portable snack recommendations. I thought I’d throw the question out to y’all so you can help each other out. If you have any recommendations for snacks that are good to take on-the-go, feel free to leave your suggestions!  Below are a few of my snack recipes that are easy to transport:

Chocolate-Chip Blondies

These are a big hit every time I make them for kids. The children never seem to be scared by the fact that the blondies contain oats and beans. They only care that the blondies taste good! Kids are so smart.

Homemade Chocolate Larabars

Much cheaper than store-bought Larabars, and they taste better too. Plus you can customize them. One of these days, I’m going to splurge on freeze-dried raspberries so I can make chocolate-raspberry Larabars.

Berry Crumble Bars

So soft and sweet and buttery… and so healthy you can have three!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Babies

These are one of my favorite portable snacks. I often make them in bar form, so they’re like a homemade version of my favorite Cookie Dough Larabars.

Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Cookies

New obsession. I’m sorry; I’ll try to refrain from mentioning them again for a period of… oh, probably around two hours.

Baked Oatmeal Cake

Also known as Boatmeal. One of the most-popular recipes on my blog. This makes a really good “on the go” breakfast, and you can easily make it up the day/night before.

Rice Crispy Treat Babies

You could also make this recipe into traditional rice-crispy treat squares. Sorry, they won’t come wrapped in shiny turquoise.

Gooey PB&J Blondies

I made these for the birthday party of a friend’s daughter, and the kids went crazy for them. Just remember to include a wet napkin if you pack one of these in a lunchbox. They can be a bit sticky, thanks to the jelly.

Ultimate Fudge Brownies

Another one of my favorites. Pretty much, if a recipe has chocolate, it’s my favorite. Bonus points for “fudge” in the title.

Healthy Chocolate-Chip Cookies

I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t like chocolate-chip cookies. Truly, they must be the most beloved snack food in America. Well, maybe it’s a tie with potato chips. Everyone seems to love potato chips. But I would much rather have chocolate-chip cookies!

    I got the chia seeds today!!!! I’m making overnight oats for tommorow morning because I need a quick breakfast before I go to dog training :). Yayy. Btw, what’s your favorite use for coconut butter? I bought the little packets of the coconut butter that is probably 2 tbsp. I’m trying to think of what I can use for it, thanks!

      Mmmm straight up!
      It’s also amazing over carrot cake pancakes or as icing on a cupcake. Oh, and in my raw chocolate fudge cake. One of my favorite desserts ever :).

    My fav snacks to bring on the go are larabars, apples, or a handful of almonds! 🙂

    Wow, drooling! thanks for compiling some of your faves! These snacks would never actually make it out the door for me…why? They’d all be eaten before we even left the house 🙂

    I do love bringing homemade snacks with though! Usually it’s fresh fruit and veggies cut up, raisins, dried fruit, homemade energy balls/bites/bars..stuff that’s easy and plant based and holds up decently well and doesn’t look “too good” so that within 4 mins of being out the door someone is saying, mommy im hungry i need a snack..just b/c she knows I have fudge brownies in my purse or something 🙂

    I like making different variations of chunky granola, usually including peanut butter. Also, especially when I’m hiking, Clif Mojo Mountain Mix bars are yummy and sustaining!

    Katie–hello! I am a longtime reader (and lover of all things CCK), have not commented much. But I’m from Dallas and I went to dinner last night at Sol’s Nieto Mexican Grill on Mockingbird. They have vegan cheese and soy chorizo to sub in their dishes 🙂 I tried their vegan cheese quesadillas and they were great! Just wondered if you have ever been there. Do you know of any other vegan friendly restaurants in Dallas?

      Hi Carrie!!!! Oh my goodness, how did I not know about that place?? I don’t think I’ve had Mexican food in… five years? Maybe more? I never liked it much, because restaurants in the US make it so meat-centered. But I am definitely definitely looking up the restaurant now. Ooh I’m excited!

      I don’t eat out often, but when I do, some of my favorite places include: Clay Pit (separate vegetarian section), Bliss Raw Cafe (warning: not for non-adventurous omnivore friends!), Genghis Grill (love them!), and Pei Wei. What about you? Have you found any other good places? LOL judging by your comment, you seem to know more about this than me!

        I am from around Dallas and I read up on a few other places too that I want to try! One is the pizza lounge and they have vegan pizzas with Daiya cheeze or if you want mexican, there is a restaurant called “Bee” where you can build your own enchiladas. Some of the filling options are a vegan special or a quinoa & tofu filling. Spiral Diner is a classic vegan restaurant too!

          Thank you so much! I now have three places to look up! Can you believe I have never had an enchilada, vegan or otherwise? I think I’ll look up the Mexican places first!

    Mmmm that just made me hungry! I just bought some Larabars to bring to the bf’s for the weekend so I can be prepared in case I get stuck with another iceberg salad! But for school I like roasted chickpeas, fruit, sweet tater chips, figs/prunes and almond butter, and anything chocolatey of course.

    Such good ideas for school! I have been struggling to find yummy snacks, that actually stay yummy in a back too heavily loaded with books. Frozen muffins work really well (just pop them out of the freezer the morning of consumption, and they thaw perfectly before morning break), and I llike to take things like trail mix, nuts and chocolate, and such.

    Hey now – you could totally take dip as a snack. I know I would. Just need a little container with a good seal, and you have instantly made your lunch just that much more fun!

    Wow I wish my mom had packed stuff like that in my lunch at school!! Now i love hummus and pita chips, turkey and cottage cheese or any fruit really. I love gummy candy too. Some stuff (like watermelon, grapes) are hard to take as a snack for me because I only like them really cold! This is an awesome list though and I love everybody elses suggestions!! People are going to be so jealous of my snackage now 🙂

    Great ideas! I’m about to start school again and I’m always on the lookout for great portable snacks… Is it acceptable to sneakily eat snacks under the table in grad school? Anything that doesn’t make noise is good, I’ve definitely disrupted a quiet class with a crinkly Luna bar wrapper before.

    I mix my own trail mix with cashews, sliced almonds, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds and dried apricots and keep a mason jar of it at my desk at work, along with a mason jar of raw almonds. But as for “making” a portable snack, one of my absolute favourites is called “marathon chunks” from the a blog, “neverhomemaker”. She’s a runner who eats really healthy and I fell in love with her marathon chunks the first time I tried them – sunflower seeds, cashews, peanut butter, dried apricots, maple syrup – how can you go wrong? You can’t! No cooking required, just press into a pan, let it set in the fridge or freezer then cut into chunks. Nummy!
