Yesterday morning’s weather was abominable.
Abominable.
Like the snowman.
Thankfully, breakfast made up for the weather.
Warm, cinnamony Snickerdoodle Oatmeal.
Dear spellchecker, “cinnamony” is too a word. Don’t you know anything??
Usually, rainy days are reserved for staying inside with a warm drink and a good book. Yesterday, however, I had somewhere special to go. October is “Adopt a Pet” month, and even though I’m not over the death of my dog (and I never will be), I know I can offer a good home to a lonely puppy.
Can you believe this guy was scheduled to be euthanized?
He looked so sad in his crate; it would’ve been impossible to not take him home. If you’re ever thinking of buying a dog, please consider adoption so that adorable pups like this one won’t be put down.
I really want to call him Batman. (Check out those ears!) But my sister informs me this would be cruel and I must give him a proper name. So far, he-who-must-not-be-named seems to be getting along with Henry, my other dog. Henry pretty much ignores the puppy.
Grumpy Henry.
Ashley says
I just got a 5 yr old pug a few months ago, because her owner had died and the family didn’t want her, and the only thing left was to take her to the pound, so we took her. I’ve always wanted a pug, and now that I have her, I can’t imagine anything else. She is adorable! I didn’t have to worry about names, since she already had one: Elsa. Congrats on the new puppy!
Megan says
What a cutie! You should totally name him Batman.
Stina says
Your puppy is absolutely adorable! What kind of dog is he?
I think Batman is a perfectly acceptable name, but then again, I named my dog Maxwell Edison, and my kitten Sgt. Pepper (both after Beatle’s songs.) I really want to adopt another dog (specifically a chihuahua or weiner dog), but I don’t have space for another animal in my condo. 🙁
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
They say he’s a chihuaua, but he really doesn’t look like one to me. I think maybe he’s 1/2 chihuahua and 1/2 something else (Rat terrier, maybe?). His face just doesn’t look like a chihuahua’s.
And Oh my word, I love your dogs’ names!
vicki says
he looks like he’s part miniature doberman minture to me. Except for those ears. His eye’s don’t seem ‘buggy’ enough to be a chihuaua.
Kenzie says
chiweenie 🙂
Hilliary@HappilyEverHealthy says
What a cutie! I have two dogs. Prince a little black terrier looking dog and baxter a golden retriever! Love them to pieces!
Qi Ting @ Misadventures of Fat free Baking says
He’s soooooo cute!!!! Oh, just name him ‘Batman’! He shouldn’t be nameless! He’ll be sad… just look at his eyes! I love him! 😀
Genevieve says
He looks so sweet when he’s sleepy! Apparently Batman did have a dog named Ace the Bat-Hound, so you could call him that! I don’t think it’s cruel – he will feel like a superhero!
Alyssa S says
He is so cute! And he totally looks like a Batman!
Kelly J. R. says
Congrats on your new pup! I have two border collies – both adopted from local shelters. I wouldn’t do it any other way.
Bethany says
Call him Batman! That’s an awesome name! He’s adorable!
Synne says
hahah, you should totally name him batman!! It was the first thing that popped into my head when i saw the pictures 😛 I don’t think it would be cruel, batman is awesome, he has superpowers!! And it is totally normal to name pets after fictional figures, my aunt has a cat named pocahontas (Then again, she’s a bit of a crazy-cat lady with 3 cats…)
Sam says
Oh dear, I didn’t know I already reached crazy-cat lady status. I have four! (and two dogs and a snake, but they’re split between two people, so maybe that makes it okay?)
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Hahah I want to be a crazy cat lady someday! I wonder if Henry would tolerate a cat…
Sam says
Maybe! How does he react to them when he comes across them? We adopted one of our dogs as an “older” dog (he was about two), and I was soo nervous that he wouldn’t get along with my cats (they’re my babies!). Asides from thinking that they should be bopped on the head, they tolerate each other rather well.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Henry? Ha! He’s scared of everything!
Ragnhild says
Oh he is adorable! Please call him Batman- I LOVE that name!
You are seriously adorable too! such a beautiful photo of you Katie!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Awwwww thank you so much!!!
Page says
Aww what a cutie. Totally looks like a Batman to me. 🙂 Yep we’ve got a dog and some fish. Probably going to get a kitty soon but we’re not ready yet.
Bridget says
Since you have a grumpy old henry ( which reminds me of Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady), I’m compelled to suggest ‘Colonel Pickering’ as a name. 😉 ( I love that movie!)
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
My last name is Higgins ;).
Tiph says
‘Colonel Pickering… haha! That’s awesome! hahaha! 🙂
Jolene says
I have two adopted pups! Bowser is a four year old terrier mix from Puerto Rico. And Ripley is my big girl, a catahoula leopard dog mix from Tennessee who I met through the NEADS program!
I love your new pup and you should ABSOLUTELY name him Batman.
Demelza says
If your sister won’t go for Batman, perhaps Bruce Wayne? ;]
Colleen @ Jimmy Choos on the Treadmill says
I kind of love the name Batman!! Unfortunately, I don’t have any pets because my mom and brother are severely allergic!
Victoria (District Chocoholic) says
Your new pup looks kind of like a bochi (Boston terrier/chihuahua mix). Do you happen to know if this is the case?
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Ooh maybe! They told me he was a chihuahua, but (as I wrote to another commenter) I don’t think he looks like one. So perhaps you’re right. And that would be super-cool because my sister went to Boston University, and their mascot is the Boston terrier :).
lazysmurf says
OMG he is so cute and I think Batman would be an awesome name, then you could find a cute bat themed Halloween collar!
rachel says
omg cuteness! we want to get a dog, not now but in the near future. i’m just concerned how my two cats will handle it 😡
Alaska says
Batman sounds like a great idea to me! I read somewhere that pets respond very well to two syllable names ( I’m sorry I don’t have any sources it was a while ago that I read this but the article said something about it’s easier for them to recognize and remember it). Batman is two syllables, and he looks like a batman! It’s meant to be? 🙂
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
That’s really interesting… now that you mentioned it, I think all my dogs have had two-syllable names! Harris, Molly, Henry, Duffy… and my rabbit and bird, too. The theory seems to hold truth!
Amie Hutton says
Batman is pretty much the perfect name for him. And so not cruel. Batman is cool!
Melinda says
He is adorable! I too like the name Batman but I would like any tough guy name for a little dude! My husband and I just adopted a 2 yr old malamute last week and named her Nyssa. She’s still warming up to our other dog Koa…a husky/shepard/wolf-hybrid that thinks he’s a dachshund. Maybe one of these days she’ll stop bossing him around!
Congrats on the addition to your family!
natasha says
oh my goodness! that puppy is too cute!! good job on snatching him up!!
Kristin @ STUFT Mama says
Katie- he is ADORABLE! I just wnat to squeeze him through the computer! 🙂 So awesome that you adopted him. I get so sad for all those poor animals.
We have 2 cats (one of them is hairless- and he’s awesome), a dog, a parrot, tortoises and a ton of birds outside. We’re a freaking farm. 🙂
Have so much fun hanging out with your new addition. 🙂
Alyssa says
He’d probably love to be called Batman, lol! He’s SOOOOOOOO cute!
We have a dog we adopted from a shelter when she was 6 months old. She just turned 13. She’s a corgi-pitbull mix and the sweetest thing ever! She helps us take care of the kids and keeps us all on the straight and narrow.
Renee says
Such a sweet new puppy! I think you could call him Batman or Batty or Bruce Wayne (because that is Batman’s real name). Shelter puppies are the best-I have 2 myself and they are awesome. Congrats on your new friend.
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Great minds! 😉
Jessy (squeezetheday) says
So cute!! I bought my dog (my family had dogs before, but this one is the first that is my very own – it was actually his 8th birthday yesterday :D), but if I ever decide to get a dog again, I’ll definitely adopt it.
I haven’t had any problems commenting on your blog, but I asked you in the giveaway post if it’s open to non-US readers and you didn’t respond.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Open to all 🙂
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
So cute! Maybe you should name him Bruce Wayne 😉
Megan says
Puppies!!!!!!! I would adopt tons of puppies if I could! He is ADORABLE! Thank you for saving a dog! I feel like taking one home every time I see a picture in the paper; however, I don’t think I would like ten dogs running around my house :-/ I do have a beautiful border/collie lab mix named Hermione! She is SO sweet and I love her! We also have a large (~110 lbs) chocolate lab named Cooper who is almost 12, has cataracts, tumors, but is sweet as can be! Oh dogs…how I love thee.
Lucy says
Adorable. I love his cute little..scratch that.. BIG eyes. I have a puppy named sammi she is a ridge-back. I love her to death. As for adoption I was adopted and will in the future adopt may animals 🙂 BTW you blog is the bomb.com, just putting it out there.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Awww, thank you!!! 🙂
Jennyb says
he’s so cute! my mum doesn’t like animals so i’ve never had a pet of my own which is hard as i’m a complete animal lover!
Why is Batman cruel? – Batman was a superhero!! surely thats a compliment!
Jaime says
I think you should name him batman – it totally suits him! we have a little black shih tzu named Wilbur and everyone didn’t think I should name him that but I’m glad I did because he is totally a Wilbur.
Debbie says
Awwww, so cute!!! I love the name Batman. We have 4 rescues; 2 dogs and 2 kittens. Winston, a white collie, was rescued from a puppy mill in the south, Gaby, a sheltie was inherited from one of my Mom’s friends when she passed away. The 2 kittens, Darla and Spanky, were adoped from a rescue group. I love them even more than chocolate 🙂
Sherry says
Congratulations on the addition to your family. Your puppy is adorable. I have a black and tan , mostly black chihuahua. We called him batman at first but did not really fit. His name is Bruce.
He is a tough little guy. That covers all the tough guys, right? Bruce Wayne, Bruce Banner, Bruce Willis, Bruce Lee, and Bruce the Chihuahua all tough guys. 😉
Rachel @ Eat, Learn, Discover! says
Ahh so incredibly cute! Same story with my dog (who I miss so much right now since i’m at school!), she has the most adorable face ever, and was scheduled to be euthanized the day after we adopted her. Aside from being an amazing addition to the family, I feel so great to have saved such a sweet, innocent animal!
Sara says
Congratulations!! What a cutie! I have a lab mix that we rescued from the pound when he was a puppy. I can’t believe they were going to euthanize that sweet dog!
You could call your dog Bruce Wayne instead of Batman? Great idea Sherry!
beckyanna says
Awwwww…I love my “puppies.” Maybe not so much puppies anymore as they are 18 months old and 60lbs of Husky energy, but I can’t imagine life without them. This picture made me want to cuddle “batman” right now!
Kat @ a dash of fairydust says
Oh my god,he’s absolutely ADORABLE!
I’ve got a cocker spaniel and named him “Jazz” – without any proper reason,I just liked the name 😀
Eva @LittleMissGymRat says
Oh my GOD SO CUTE!!
I’m so jealous, and would love to adopt a cat or dog from a shelter. Unfortunately, living situation won’t allow for it now… living with 5 other housemates and we all have busy school schedules. Sigh. 🙁 but eventually I will. It’s so gratifying knowing that you’re saving a life, providing a better one and hey, it’ll be a benefit to yourself. Win-win situation eh?
PS Snickerdoodle oatmeal sounds out of this world. Like most of your recipes. Amaaaazang!
Beth says
Bless you, Katie, for saving that sweet puppy! I hope he/she brings you many happy years.
We had three dogs, but mine died in July 2010 of cancer, and we lost another one 3 weeks ago, again to cancer. We have one left who is 12 years old. I also have two cats, ages 14 & 15, so our house is the geriatric ward for pets.
Katherine says
Your sister is nuts, Batman is perfect. 😉
I have an adorable corgi named Marbles! She’s got a really unusual coloring, and she has one brown eye and one blue eye! I also love her because in the 7 or so years we’ve had her, she’s never once growled at, or been mean to anyone or anything. She does still bark when someone’s at the door, but that’s her saying hello!
Beth says
Bless you, Katie, for saving that sweet puppy! I hope you and the puppy have many happy years together.
We had 3 dogs as of 15 months ago, but I lost my German shepherd in July 2010 to cancer, and we lost another dog 3 weeks ago, also to cancer. We are left with one 12-year-old dog, a 14 year old cat and a 15 year old cat, so our house is the geriatric ward for pets.
Veggie V! @Veggie V's Vegan Adventure says
Soooo cute!! I love animals. (Duh) We aren’t supposed to have pets in our rental, but I do have Betty 🙂 She’s my 8 year old goldfish. And guess what…she’s mostly vegan! Ha! I need to do a blog post about her soon. She’s adorable. (Duh)
courtney says
Oh, Katie, he is so adorable!! I’m so glad he found you and a good home 🙂 Maybe you could name him something like Bartholomew and call him Batman for short? Or is Bartholomew even worse? 😉
Michaela says
I was just recently thinking about Molly.
That puppy looks scared indeed, god knows what has happened to him… He is so lucky to have found a home with you 🙂
Good luck with choosing a name!
Rachel says
Awww! Cute puppy!! Batman is totally acceptable. A neighbors black cat is named the bat!
I have a kitten that I adopted from the SPCA. I love her. I named her Mochi. She’s my baby <3
Also right now my roommate and I are fostering a chocolate lab/golden mix who is sooo sweet.
Chris says
Why not name him Bruce Wayne??? It’s perfect!
Sarah says
Oh i love that name, Chris! I totally steal that for my future dog 🙂
deva at deva by definition says
I also recommend naming him Bruce Wayne!
Sarah says
There ya go Katie, i think Bruce Wayne and Batman are the top picks for names so far. Batman is accurate, but Bruce Wayne is a proper name to please your sister- maybe mix it up like BruceBat WayneMan or maybe Bruce Man, Bat Wayne, or something like that. 🙂
Sarah says
He is really cute! I would love to adopt a dog (dont like cats), but Mama says no. BUMMER! When im older i will adopt dogs and children 🙂 Maybe you should name him a chocolate themed name, or something to do with October. Pumpkin? Espresso? 100% Cocoa? or maybe just Cocoa, because you are a chocolate lady. Oh, i love Black Forest! Personally i like Batman a lot. How about Licorice, because he’s as black as black licorice? Just a few ideas here!
P.S.- what do you call him right now?
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
lol Batman. I can’t help it 😉
Sarah says
Then go for it! Maybe sister will come around?
Colleen says
You totally should name him Batman, I definitely see the resemblance!
Christie Freeman says
I was trying to think of possible names for your new ‘puppy love’, keeping it in the ‘chocolate vein’…and thought, hmm, “D.C.- short for Dark Chocolate”. LOL. I am happy for you, do agree with you about how everyone should think about adopting a pet. I adopted my sweet dog, Ginny, and never regretted it. She was a cute little, fluffy puppy, and grew to be SUCH a loving member of my family. I adopted her about a year before I got married, and whenever my husband and I had to leave town because he was on active duty, my mother-in-law took her in, and essentially fell in love with her. I miss my Ginny, still. She was hit by a vehicle driving WAY too fast down our rural, dirt road in 2004, and I wasn’t there to say goodbye to her. So, I know how sad it can be, losing a pet- especially whenever they feel like a real part of one’s family.
I hope this new puppy helps your heart to heal, when it comes to having lost your other dog. And, enjoy the ‘getting to know you’ stages!
Have a great day!
Christie

Adorable. Thanks so much for adopting. All my pets come from shelters or foster parents that have taken in strays. They are the best and deserve so much love. Pets must be named from the heart. If you feel Batman, go with Batman!
Jenny says
He kinda reminds me of Batty from Fergully 🙂 He’s adorable though! I’m all about adoption and rescue facilities, my cat Wookie was a rescue (actually right out of our front yard) She was 6 months old and already pregnant. I could have found a better cat though, she’s even doing well with me training her a little.
Totally go with Batman, if he has the character to back it up then the name totally fits and it’s not cruel 🙂
Christie Freeman says
Something funny I just thought of as I reread your latest blog entry was that…Batman is part of DC comics…and I suggest D.C. for a name, before I realized you’d wanted to name your puppy Batman. LOL. Hey! By the way…Name your puppy ANYTHING your heart says to name him! He’s YOUR puppy love!
Mandaray says
Aww, what a sweet face! And if Batman isn’t a suitable name, you could just call him Bruce Wayne. 🙂 D.C. is also an excellent suggestion.
Christie says
Somehow, my second message was lost, so I hope it doesn’t show up later on…I’d be so embarrassed! Anyway…After rereading your newest blog entry about your new puppy, I realized that there’s a funny connection between your wanting to name your puppy Batman, and my suggestion of the name D.C….D.C. comics is the home of Batman. LOL.
Name your puppy whatever your heart desires- he is YOUR puppy love!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Haha they all showed up. See, I told you I was having trouble with comments! 😕 Eh, but more sweet comments from you can only be a good thing… I love the idea of DC. It also reminds me of this Christina Ricci movie I used to love, where the cat was named DC :).
Annie says
Aw, too cute! I have a not so little yellow lab named Curtis. Enjoy your new love!
Kit-Kat says
NAME HIM BATMAN!!!! It’s not cruel, it’s unique. You could call him Mr. Man or Batty for short.
I used to have two collies (a long haired and a short-haired), but the long haired collie died of a heart attack last year, and the short haired one died in his sleep sunning sunning himself while we were away at church this summer. Both were SO HEALTHY, and they were still galloping around, playing, and acting like puppies (no gray hairs, despite one being 10 and the other 11). Claymore was the name of the long haired collie, and my special boy the short haired collie was Lad. I miss them both SO MUCH!!! :~( I hope to get a collie this spring though, when the weather will be better here in stormy Washington State.
Good luck with your new pup, and let me know what you decide to name him (seriously, keep the name Batman).
Laura says
Aghhhh so adorable! We just adopted too, it is amazing how many SUPER CUTE doggies that are available..some even purebred!
I too think BRUCE would be so cute!
Liz says
Aw, he’s cute! And I think Batman would be an awesome name for a dog. Maybe you could name him Bruce or Wayne instead. 😀
bitt says
congrats on the new puppy adoption! thanks for spreading the word about rescue versus bred animals. so important. he looks right at home already!
Emma says
Your new puppy is adorable! I adopted a cat last winter, Morgan, she is the best cat ever. I had to take her home as she had been living at the shelter for 2 whole years!
Jennifer JCD says
Eeee…. congratulations!!! What an adorably addition to your family! I am so happy he has a second chance at life. And I know he’s in the best hands with you as his Mummy! And I don’t think Batman is an unreasonable name. You could always go with Bruce Wayne. How old is he?
Do they have a lot of dogs at the humane and resuce societies in your area? Up here, dogs get adopted really fast and often the dog area of the shelter is empty or being used for our extreme overpopulation of cats. Thus, they often bring in dogs from other shelters so they can be adopted. The California Cuties programme (where a charity flies up small dogs from California to Edmonton) is always a huge hit and those babies who were on death row get adopted within days here.
Have a great day with your new puppy. Maybe you can train him to run with you. 🙂
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
No, actually they don’t have a lot of dogs (thank goodness). But they have a lot of shelters, each with a few dogs. Dallas is a big area.
Batman is one… very puppy-ish! He LOVES to run. I definitely need to take him with me and try him out :).
Sara says
PLEASE call him Batman. He’s your dog. It’s a wonderful name. If you’re self-conscious about it, you could always call him Bruce Wayne, I suppose. That would be funnier.
Tiph says
What?!?! Why is “Batman” cruel?! I think Batman is an awesome name! And very fitting! Just DO IT!!! 🙂 OR… if you really did want a more “proper” name….. you could always name him Bruce Wayne. (heehee!) 😉 😉
Our dogs are Italian Greyhounds, and their names are Sicily (after the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea) & Siena (a city in Tuscany, Italy.)! ~ I love creative & unique names! <3
Aja says
That puppy is so cute and I see nothing wrong with naming him Batman.
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
Haha I like the name batman! I have a goldfish and two hermit crabs. Their names are Neville (the fish) and then padfoot and prongs. All after harry potter characters!
Heather says
I was going to say just what Sara did I think Bruce Wayne would be a good compromise, if you decide not to name him Batman, though he does look like a Batman to me : )
I adopted two kittens from a shelter soon after my first cat passed away. I probably wasn’t “ready,” but as you say, I’ll never really be over her loss, and I couldn’t pass up those adorable kittens. I’m so happy that I’ve given them a home. They bring a lot of joy into my life, and I wouldn’t trade them now if I could.
Kim says
Totally adorable and I think Batman is his name. Or he could be both Bruce Wayne and then Batman when he’s protecting the house (when the doorbell rings, he hears a siren, etc). Thank you for saving his little life. You’re his hero!
My son and I have a yorkie/maltese mix puppy – Moxy Girl and looking forward to adding a cat to the family in the near future. We just lost our hamster, Spike Whiskers Sullivan, this Monday. 🙁
Oh, and my son LOVED your Hostess Cupcakes! I made them a couple of weeks ago and he/we really enjoyed them.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Aww I am so so excited you made them… and even more happy he liked them :).
Chloe@LightOnMyFeet says
Aww, such a cute puppy! I think Batman is a real name for a dog and even if I was a dude, it’d be awesome to be named Batman haha.
Whitney says
He’s a cutie! With reference to his amazing ears you could call him Radar. If Batman fits him, you should go with it. AND he has his own theme song…na-na na-na na-na na-na Batman! So fun. We have a golden retriever rescue named Apollo, but his nick name is Nut-Nut. So we sing to him in the tune of “My Little Buttercup”…”my little Nut-Nut, has the sweetest smile.” My childhood Chihuahua was named Nipper.
Oh, and if he is like most Chihuahua’s he NEEDS a sweater. He will love it! A big thick sock with holes cut for his head and legs can suffice until you can get him one.
alyssa booko says
AND HE is Chocolate too 🙂
you could name him BEAN, like a chocolate bean cause he is so tiny and he is dark like chocolate
Erin says
Get out of town… I ate your recipe for snickerdoodle oatmeal yesterday, too! Delicious. Also, I totally love the name Henry… good choice. 🙂
Haley @ Health Freak College Girl says
ahhh he’s so cute!
Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says
Mmm your oatmeal looks delicious! Cinnamon sugar is just an awesome combination 🙂 And congrats on your new puppy! He’s so adorable! I actually kind of like the name batman for him!
Kim says
AWWWWWW!!!!!!
Did you post any food today? All I can remember is that adorable puppy!
As for pets, I have the world’s dumbest cat (sweet though) and a chinchilla that someone dumped at my building more than a year ago. I couldn’t bring myself to drop him at the SPCA myself because they had 100 of them at the time! Looks like I may be getting him a companion soon…fingers crossed!
Elle says
I think it is wonderful that you brought this little guy home with you. He obviously loves you already.
I think Batbaby would be a good name for him!
I had a black kitty once called Napalm.
Love the pic of you and your new furbaby!
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says
Batman is the PERFECT name! <3 ….I just got a doy last Thursday. Same kind of situation. The city was going to put her down and I just couldn't handle the thought, so I now have a new dog/puppy too!
Terri Sue says
i couldn’t have said no to those eyes either. that’s why i don’t go to shelters, pounds, or pet stores on days when they have dogs or cats out for adoption. it just breaks my heart. we have a full house. one cat (rescued), one dog (rescued), 2 lovebirds (1rescued), 2 cockatiels (1 rescued), a male german roller canary who fills the house with his songs, 5 owl finches, 1 sun conure (rescued from an extremely abusive situation), 1 java rice finch, and last but certainly not least our house duck Dodger also rescued. she wears little harnesses that hold her diapers in place and swims in our spare bathroom tub. she is our darling. of our close and extended family no one has embraced the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle as my husband and i did 31 years ago, except our son and my husbands niece. our daughter couldn’t wait to have her first hamburger after she turned 18. so when family is in town and we go out to eat we know that everyone else will be eating meat. i have never let it bother me until about 1 1/2 years ago when my dad and step-mother were in town. they had taken us to a fancy restaurant. i hadn’t been paying attention when everyone else ordered. apparently my step-mother had ordered a plate with numerous meats. when the waitress brought it she started pointing out which meat was which and then she said this is your duck. at that point i lost it. i thought i might throw up. it was as if someone had come to the table and said, this is your cat or dog. she was going to eat duck in front of me. i still can’t believe anyone could be so rude and unfeeling.
Marcee .... ILLINOIS says
Wow.
That is amazing Terri Sue. How do you do it?
Well, I love all pets. The thing is, I can only handle so much. At one time (when I was young of course) we had 4 poochies (all rescued/found/one was given to us in a snap by a cruel owner) and 3 kitty-cats …. two were found roaming. Martini we adopted from a shelter when she was I think 2 months old. She lived to be 17!
Good luck to you Terri Sue. You are enjoying it all!
Hannah says
Awwww…so cute! I totally vote for naming him Batman! 🙂 I adopted my “fur baby” from a No Kill Shelter almost 8 years ago. She is the best dog! I don’t know what I would do without her!
shannonmarie (rawdorable) says
There’s nothing wrong with naming him Batman. That’s the name of a superhero, perfect for a super dog. An example of a cruel name is when my sister wanted to name her duck “roast.” At least that didn’t happen. He ended up being called Hercules, which was funny because he was so small.
I had problems on a couple occasions posting comments. Fingers crossed that this one works 🙂
sheri says
The puppy looks like he needs so much love! The ears do remind me of Batman! He’s too sweet to be named batman, though. I agree with your sister on that. I wish I could think of a name for you to consider. Sheldon? Sidney? Bartleby?
Jenny$1983 says
Scheduled to be euthanized?! That’s awful! I too am still not over my first dog dying several years ago, but I felt, like you, that it would be shameful for us to be in a position to provide a good, loving home to a dog in need of one and not do so. So we found an English Bull Terrier on the Bullies In Need website and travelled all the way across the country to pick him up! He’s called Ozzie and he’s wonderful, and I love that we can look after him and make him happy 🙂
We also have a rescued cat, who’d been found along with his mother, who was so malnourished when he was rescued that his whiskers were broken and he’s since lost both of his upper fangs 🙁 But now he’s happy, healthy, and bosses us all about – including the dog! – like he was born into royalty 😀 I would have more but it’s not my decision, sadly.
I don’t understand why anybody would choose NOT to adopt a rescued animal, but then I can rant on about human attitudes to animals for a very long time and this isn’t the appropriate place. I’m just so happy to see this gorgeous little guy given a great new life! I think Batman is a fine name for him, by the way 😉
Runnergirl says
Your puppy is darling!!!! I have two yellow labs. They are MUCH bigger than your cute little guy. I hope you enjoy your new family member. Onyx? or Oreo?
Marcee .... ILLINOIS says
Katie …. so glad you rescued this simply adorable sweetheart! You will keep falling in love with him as the days go by.
Not sure re that name. How about INKY? I {{heart}} that!
I thought most all shelters these days save pets from a horrible and unnecessary death. That should be the ultimate goal. To continue killing, is so disturbing. Society is (still) going backward instead of forward.
We need forever (and more) homes for them all.
Yes, certainly, always rescue a pet. I have been doing that for 25+ years. Especially, older pets. Those are the best ones. They get left behind continually. Very-very sad.
Recently, we lost our Sophie. She was ill. Gosh, I sure miss her. Our other little doggie misses Soph too. It’s obvious how they will search and look all over the house for their buddy. (sigh)
There were several poochies we were considering adopting at CCR. Everytime I check the site it bothers me. Seems to be more and more pets available each time.
Best of everything to you Katie ….. I love your blog. You are so talented!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Yeah, the goal is to save them all… but apparently there are just so many that not all shelters are able to be no-kill. I try not to think about it, because it is absolutely heartbreaking and I want to save them all. As it is, I’m wondering if I could handle taking care of three by myself… I’m considering it!

Oh my goodness, he is so stinkin’ adorable!! I think Batman is a great name – so fitting and cute. We have two labs – one is a chocolate and one is a yellow. They are our babies! 🙂
Kaitlyn@TheTieDyeFIles says
How adorable!! I just adopted a little kitty from a shelter and named her Latte. I love her more and more every minute!
Anonymous says
My cat’s name is Chai Latte. 😉
Suze says
omg, your pup is precious! hope he doesn’t have any odd habits, so far he just looks like a cuddler. We have the perfect dog, his name is cooper, cavalier king charles spaniel. And while, yes, we got him from a breeder, it was the last one in the litter and if she couldn’t sell him she was going to get rid of him (tear!). He’s our baby since we don’t have a real human baby yet 🙂
enjoy he-who-must-not-be-named cuddles!

Thank you for spreading the word about adoption! Many people think that the breed they want will not be found in shelters, which is sometimes true but with patience you will find the right dog for you at a rescue shelter. I found a puppy maltipoo this year from a foster home, after searching for about 6 months for the breed. I adopted him up, and he is such an amazing, wonderful dog! Petfinder is an excellent resource to find adoptable pets.
jayna says
I love his ears!
You could name him Bruce.
It still acknowledges his unique ears, but more subtle than Batman.
Either way, I’m sure he’s super happy to be in his new home with his new family.
Congratulations!!
P.S. my dog’s name is Henry too! and he has crazy big floppy ears.
Alex@Spoonful of Sugar Free says
I am so happy for you!!! He is adorable! I cannot believe he was scheduled to be euthanized. It sounds too cruel. So glad you were there to save him!
And I have to disagree with your sister, I don’t think batman is a bad name at all!!! I think it’s absolutely adorable! Love it!
I have a huge, 100 lb, extra furry, large head and paws, golden retriever. He’s ten yrs old (getting up there!), and the hugest lover. He is so mellow, and he always needs someone petting him. He’s happiest just lounging around with someone giving him attention. Gosh, he’s such an attention hog. I’ll be doing work on the computer, and he’s nudging my arm. I’ll be doing ab work, and he is drooling on my and getting his head in my face. Ha! I love him.
Lenna says
What a lovely puppy! I have a dog, three cats, a hamster, a guinea pig…I love pets 🙂
Jen says
Aw, you saved him! He’s adorable. I think Batman would be an awesome name…
Nanette says
Thank you so much for rescuing a dog whose time was up rather than buying him from a breeder! He’s adorable and he deserves a wonderful life with you.
Jolene (Homespun Heritage) says
Must have totally missed it…what are you calling him then? I think Oliver goes well with Henry!
Ok, we have 2 cats, 1 dog (Greyhound/German Shepherd mix…she’s odd looking but awesome!) and 1 tortoise. He’s pretty cool tortie to have around…but he’s ornery!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Haha still don’t know yet! Right now, I’m just trying out all different names and seeing what sounds “right.”
Emma (Sweet Tooth Runner) says
AWWWW I WANT HIM!! so so cute!! And Batman is a GREAT name- I used to have a dog called Batman so I’m biased 😉
Becky @ Skinnyfat Girls says
Aww! You SHOULD call him Batman! I’m pretty sure he would feel like superhero. Besides that, you could tie a cape on him and do an action photoshoot and then (like in the original Batman show) add the sound effects in text clouds: BIF! POW! BOP! Yup, coolest dog on the block.
I think I need a puppy.
Aine @ Something to Chew Over says
I think Batman would be a great name! I’m so glad you adopted – I wish everybody would do this.
Anna @ The Guiltless Life says
Thank you for this positive message – it is so true! You must always adopt when possible, it saves so many lives.
And yum – I always love ideas to change up my morning oatmeal. Thanks!
Krystina (Organically Me) says
How could anyone euthanize that cute little thing?! That’s so sad that it happens to so many animals who just need some love and a home. I’m glad you saved him. I think you should name him Bruce Wayne – a proper name, and also Batman. 😛
I just posted about my newly rescued cat. She’s my baby. <3
Erin says
Batman is a great name! My sister once adopted a black cat with black eyes and her boyfriend wanted to call her Batman. She refused, so they wound up calling him Bruce instead. Every time he came up in conversation or someone new met him, she would say in a serious voice, “Bruce, as in Bruce Wayne.” It was endlessly entertaining 😀
On another note, a friend of mine just referred me to your blog, and I’m so unbelievably grateful to her because now I’m hooked 😉 Keep up the awesome blog work and congrats on adopting your adorable pup!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Aww, I am so thankful she mentioned me!
I always wanted a black cat when I was little… I never could understand why people said they were bad luck! They’re so cute!!!

he’s adorable. if i didn’t have a tiny apartment i would steal him. also, i have 2 kitties, jack and alice. they’re best buds and my babies.

Stephanie @ StephSnacks says
I adopted one of my dogs! I used to volunteer at a sheltar and with one look at him and knew I couldn’t leave the sheltar without him..
katie says
Katie, first of all you look beautiful!
I want your hair, lucky to have beautiful straight hair!
Congrats on the puppy! SO CUTE!!!!!!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Aww, love you! And YOU have awesome hair, girl!
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
Aw, I love the new puppy & I think Batman is a perfectly acceptable name! 🙂
I adopted my pug, Stewie, from a shelter, too! We can’t figure out how anyone could ever abandon him; he’s the sweetest little guy!
Rachel says
Yeah, call him Bruce Wayne (always by the full name, never just Bruce 🙂 ) .
I have 2 cats: Sookie (named for the books not the True Blood series) and Ruby. Sookie is a rescue, she was found abandoned in an apartment building. She sucks her tail when she’s happy. Ruby is the kitten of an outdoor stray that gave a safe place to have her litter (8 kittens… EIGHT!!! … Ruby is the last one.) I wish I had time for a dog but I’m sometimes gone for 11 hours at a time and I just can’t do that to a dog.
Joanna says
He’s adorable! Call the cutie anything you want. 🙂
I don’t have any pets at the moment but I’m considering adopting an adult cat in the future. See, I’m not planning on having any kids (for many reasons, no offense to awesome mothers out there) but when I become all motherly one day, a pet sounds wonderful! And adoption is a beautiful thing to do for an animal. I’m so glad you saved your new pet!
Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather says
Too cute! You have to name him batman…. That would be perfect! I have 3 pets…, dog, cat and bunny.
Candy Covington says
I love Batman! I think it’s a great name! But then, my dog is named Gig ‘Em (yes, we’re Aggies)!
Kate (Bread & Chocolate) says
I think Batman is a perfect name for your pup. Although, maybe that can be his nickname and you can call him by his alter ego…Bruce Wayne! Enjoy the puppy love.
Moni'sMeals says
Yay, good for you Katie, he is sooooo adoooooorable. Pets are amazing aren’t they! Happy for you.
I have 2 English Bulldogs and I adore them every single second! 🙂
Like the sounds of this Oatmeal too.
Char says
yaaaayy, you’re a hero!! thank you for being an advocate for adoption! 🙂
Also, I think Batman is the best name ever! He’s totally a Batman 🙂
Faith @ For the Health of It says
Awww, how precious! I never understand how people choose breeders over the pound – I rescued Haley from the shelter and adamantly refused to even look for a dog at a pet store. She’s the sweetest little thing, and I can’t believe she didn’t have a home!
tyler says
yes two foster dogs. thank you for adopting!
Kelsey @ Snacking Squirrel says
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG – speechless <3
Katie says
So nice of you to adopt a puppy – and he’s a cutie! Congrats on your new friend 🙂
Lara says
Congratulations! He is so adorable, and I 100% agree–adoption is the way to go with pets! My two babies are both rescues and I can’t imagine them in a cold kennel waiting to be euthanized.
Hope you find the perfect name for the little guy!
~Jessica~ says
I have never seen a more beautiful dog – the silky black fur, the doe-eyes, and…the EARS! He is absolutely gorgeous.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the name ‘Batman’ – I think it suits him 🙂

I think batman is actually a cute name! Those ears say it all! Congrats on the new addition to your fam 🙂
Electra @ Vanilla Bean Lean says
I LOOOOVE your Batman … those ears and sweet face are precious. The on top of the back of the couch picture is my favorite. Congrats on your new puppy! 🙂
Eleanor@Eatinglikeahorse says
He’s gorgeous – how could anyone put him down?!
And what about calling him Robin – to get the theme in… 🙂
Kristen @ The Red Velvet Life says
OMG he’s adorable, Katie! Someone may have already suggested this, but what about the name Bruce Wayne? 😉 Regardless of what you name him, he’s just too cute 🙂
Amber K says
Such a cute little guy! I don’t have any pets since I live in an apartment, but when I can get a house I totally want to get a dog.
And I think cinnamony should be a word. The spell checker called me out on pumpkiny the other day. But some things just should be right!
natalie @ southern fit foodie says
YAY for pet adoption!!!!!!! I think Batman is an awesome name (especially with those ears!) – he is too cute.
Alexandra (Veggin' Out in the Kitchen) says
I just had to pop in to say… ADORABLE PUPPY!!! You’re so sweet to save him! I completely agree with adopting over buying (I rescued my border collie mix from a barn)! Truly adorable pictures (and gorgeous picture of you!) – that cute little face made my day! 😀
<3 <3
Nathalie says
I can totally get behind you on helping animals in need instead of just buying brand new “shiny” ones, as it were. At least half of our cat pride at home were ones that, while not adopted per se, we didn’t buy. They sort of came into our possession. We found most of them abandoned/as strays/as young kittens with no mother in sight/etc.
I know there are people who regard pets as “just animals” who live under the same roof as the humans, but to me they’ve always fallen squarely under the heading of “family.”
Also I haven’t had any problems commenting? Then again, I haven’t been commenting as much as, er, I probably should be. Heheh ^^;; Hope ya get that worked out.
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Sooo cute!! Love the pics 🙂
Juliane says
Congratulations! That is so nice of you! When I finish my studies I want to adopt a dog, too. Or better all of them…
Kristen says
OMG, you should TOTALLY name him Batman. That is awesome! Why not?!

I have four dogs, but two are at my mom’s and two are at my dads. Three of them we got from farms where their dog had puppies so we just took them in haha. I also have a couple of cats at my dad’s that I’ve had since they were kittens. I love them all 😀
So glad that you got a new puppy 🙂 Sooooo cute

Congrats on your new doggie! I think Batman is a cute name for him. Whatever you call him, I know you’re gonna love and cherish him so much and that’s all that really matters 🙂
nic - the auspicious squirrel says
Aww… so cute!
My pup passed away in late February, and as much as the sight of other dogs brings a smile to my face. I just haven’t come to a place where I’m ready to get another one. We occasionally peruse the Basset Hound rescue sites… maybe one day.
Your new pup is adorable. 🙂
I think Batman is a great name, even if it becomes his nickname. My dogs have always had a ton of nicknames. But yeah, calling “Batman! come.”.. might be a little weird. 😉
nic - the auspicious squirrel says
You could call him Bruce.. that way you aren’t giving away his secret identity. 😀
Shelley says
Batman is so CUTE! I like the idea of calling him Batman, personally. Yay for rescue dogs!
Albizia says
OMG! I can’t believe somebody could leave this puppy! It’s soooooooooooooo cute! And for some reason Batman sounds good to me for a name 😀 .
I have a pet, too. His name is Charlie. I love to say he’s from Moscow because my father found it hiding under an old Moskvich when he was a baby. I still remember he was 800g when dad brought him home (we measured him on the kitchen scale 😛 ) and had the most adorable puppy eyes. Now he is almost 12 years old and he is one of my most faithful friends.
Kaisa says
Way to go girl! I am all about promoting adopting animals through the humane society or other rescue groups! I’ve gotten both my cats through rescues and am scouring the pound for the dog I am dying to get! (just need to convince the hubs) 🙂 Enjoy the love they give!
Emily says
Aww! OMG- your puppy is beyond adorable.
I’m such an animal person, it’s ridiculous. My current apartment doesn’t allow pets, but my lease is up soon and I’m planning to move somewhere that does ASAP. I’m looking into getting a yorkie-poo. (Half yorkie, half poodle) I can’t wait!
Kris says
Batman is NOT a cruel name! It’s adorable, and so is he.
Jackie says
I would totally name him Batman! What’s so bad about that name? He definitely looks like a Batman. Super cute.
Victoria says
Awww no problem in calling him Batman! I have a black kitten and his name is Batty (after the character in Fern Gully) because he also looks like a bat.
Also have a dalmatian mix named Patch who just had knee replacement surgery (after having the opposite leg done last winter, poor thing), a black and white cat named Toulouse, and a snake named Athena.
Yeah, we like to name our pets after animals from animated movies. =]
I actually did a post on them when I first started my blog, it’s here if you want to read it! (Batty’s not in there, though, he’s the new kid!) http://thevictoriagalaxy.blogspot.com/2011/04/meet-my-pets.html
And I know exactly how you feel about never getting over the death of pets. It gets a little easier with a lot of time, but the pain is always there.
Patricia says
Yay for another life saved! You are all kinds of good!! Name him Abominable and call him Abe. lol
michelle says
Good for you! I very recently adopted a persian/himalayan 11 month of kitten. I still can’t believe someone gave him up. He’s the cutest, friendliest cake I’ve ever seen and he’s already a member of the family
Melissa @ Hot Chokolate Girl says
Congrats on your puppy! He’s adorable, and Batman is a very cute name. He’s so lucky to have a great new home with you!
We have 5 puppies. I guess that might make me a crazy dog girl, but I’m ok with that. Pets of any kind are just so much fun to have around! 🙂
Karen says
Congratulations!!! He is absolutely adorable!!!! And thanks for putting a plug in for adopting shelter pets too!! (And i think Batman is a great name for him) 🙂
Tara says
I like the name batman!! Or maybe toto, because when I see little black dogs I think of the wizard of oz!
Kathy says
My spellchecker is saying that ‘snickerdoodle’ is not a real word!
How absurd!
I honestly think Batman can be a cute name :3
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I think spellchekers need to go back to school 🙂
Jen (the little jogger) says
Good for you for adopting! I’m not dissing breeders, but there are so many pups out there who need homes and will die if nobody takes them. I also know how much it hurts to lose a dog- I just lost my dog to cancer last week. It sucks! Nobody can ever replace them, but your heart does make room to love another one. Batman is a fantastic name, too!
Kristina @ spabettie says
aawwww, he is SO cute. bless you for adopting a rescue! 🙂 we have a dachshund, Basil, who we rescued from Oregon Dachshund Rescue three years ago. best thing I ever did. 😀

What a cutie!! Can’t wait to hear the verdict on the name decision 🙂
I have a spunky little pup named Margot!
Sarah says
Promptly after buying my very first food processor last weekend, I broke it out of the box and made your fudge babies! Delicious! As for dogs, we were given a pitbull mastiff mix puppy slated to go to a shelter because her family could only have 1 dog in their new apartment. Lucy spent her first days woefully looking at us from corners. Now she’ll gently climb into our laps for quality snuggle time. All 65 pounds of her. And Batman is too a great name : )
Phoebe8228 says
Batman is a perfectly good name, I love it! Please don’t listen to your sister! :))
Gloria says
*tear* I died a little bit inside when you said he was to be euthanized. My local news station was doing a special on all the cats and dogs that “had” to be put down at the shelters in town and I was in a hysterical panic for a while. I’m not able to adopt because my rabbit does not play well with others, but I so wish I could find a little pup as adorable as your new man! He’s so precious and I LOVE the name Batman. Very fitting 🙂
Christine says
Please, please, please name him Batman. What else would you call him? Seriously. Normal names are sooooo overrated.
Also: cutest thing EVER, I want him / a dog of my own. Alas, no pets allowed in the place I currently live 🙁
Leashieloo says
What I sweet pup, I’m SO glad you rescued him! That makes me sad of what could have been, but thanks to you he has a new lease on life <3

Batman is an awesome name! What on earth is your sister talking about?? How cute is that little guy? I’m so happy he has a good home with you! 🙂
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
Aw! Congrats!! I have two pups- littermates in fact. We got them when they were 8 weeks old and they’re almost 2 now. They have LOTS of energy and I love them to death. And I can’t stop taking pictures of them still- I must have about a million (I try to show restraint on my blog, but they still make an appearance every now and then!)
Crystal W. (@EatDrinkClev) says
Your new baby is ADORABLE!!!! So cute! I’m a huge advocate for pet adoptions too. My last two pets were senior adoptions – they are normally the last to be given home because they are older. Right now I have a Mal Shi (Maltese/ Shih Tzu) that I adopted just over a year ago – she’s ten.
My dog’s name is Buffy – hate the name but love the dog. Name the new pooch anything that you like! Just go for a name that isn’t embarrassing to yell out at the dog park : )
Mary says
There is nothing wrong with naming him Batman. There was a news story in MN about a dog named batman who had cancer and has helped many with treatments and studies his parents participated in. What was studied on Batman is used in humans today to help them with cancer.
Joy says
Inhave a dog named dobby and I keep promising him a brother or sister (our 18 year old chin died in July) but we haven’t found just the one yet!
What breed is your new puppy? He’s super cute… And seeing as I named my dog after a house elf I think that batman is a great name!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
They say he’s a chihuahua, but I think he’s got something else mixed in.
P.S. We always call Henry “Dobby” because he looks JUST like Dobby! He hs Dobby’s eyes :).
Juju at Tales of Whimsy... says
He’s adorable. Go with Batman. It’s so cute and suits him.
Solid names are for when you have children.

i really hope you name the pup batman! the name is perfect, and i think it’s such a cute name! i love your puppy!!! i really want one, but i still live at home and my parents are not too keen on a dog right now.
anyway!!!!!!! what is that dollop of fabulousity on top of your oatmeal?
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
LOL it’s just coconut milk ice cream, for the photoshoot. It’s so hard to make oatmeal look pretty!
Lisa @ TequilaCupcakes says
Your new pup is adorable! I’m so glad you adopted him! Adoption is so the best way to go 🙂
We have one puppy, Maggie Mae. Well, technically she’s not a pup anymore, but I think she is 🙂 We actually got her from the streets when she was dumped near our apartment complex with a box that said ‘free puppies’. Maggie was the mama and we never found her pups. When we took her to the vet they told us she wasn’t quite a year old and must have gotten pregnant on her first heat. She’s a crazy little thing, we like to warn people she’s from the streets 😉 but she’s the best 15 pound furball ever!
Tanya says
I have to admit, I’m not a dog person. We had cats growing up. No dogs. But…that little guy looks soooo adorable! Congrats 🙂
Em says
My two cents .. call him BATMAN! I think it’s perfect 🙂 I got my mongrel from the pound (I live in NZ)
Alexis says
congratulations on your new puppy! He’s beautiful. And your oatmeal looks beautiful too.
Cammy says
Major kudos to you for adopting. Some people are convinced that if they don’t get a tiny puppy, it will never bond to them, which is totally untrue. I got my dog (he was about 4 at the time) from a shelter about 6 years ago, and he has been the gift that keeps on giving and couldn’t be any more closely bonded to me if I had bottle-fed him from birth. Congrats on your new addition!
Nicole @ Giraffelegs says
awwww congrats on the new family member!
Arya says
yay congrats! All of my fuzzy family members have been rescues. At the moment, I have Apollo, my Great Dane. He is a big, needy pile of love. I also share a rescued English Bulldog named Chauncey, and some cute rescued ferrets with my ex. They live with him, but I get to see them every few weeks.
Natasha says
Hey Katie!
Just got back from Punta Cana – I just saw your blog! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love him. You are a girl after my own heart….
He looks like a Pablo to me, or Julio (Pronounced Wholio), or even Coaco…maybe even Panda (Black and White?)
I would personally just call him Bubba Boy – again….LOVE HIM.
YOu rock Missy.

He is so handsome! You are awesome for adopting a shelter dog. They are the best. If my boyfriend and I didn’t have to spend so much time away from the house (at work & long commutes), we would get one in a heartbeat. For now, it’s just us, a chinchilla, and three turtles he rescued from someone who “couldn’t take care of them anymore”. (I don’t like turtles as pets – they should be wild!)

Hi Katie!
Your dog sure looks like a sweetheart and I love the name Batman 🙂
In fact our dog’s name is Batman (we’ve had him for three years and the owner’s 4 year old son named him- we liked it so much that we kept it). I wish you and Batman many joyful years together!!!

I used to have pets..
I miss them now that I live with my Dad. :(:(.
I miss them all!!..

So yeah, I guess going from 14 to 0 is pretty big. Still, I occasionally get to see them now :):).
