Chocolate-Coconut Easter Bunnies

Yesterday, I got lost.

Lost in my local Michaels Craft Store, that is.

By the time I found the exit, I’d made quite a few new friends: scrapbook supplies, paintbrushes, and a bunny-shaped candy mold. Right away, I put the candy mold to good use:

melties

Coconut Melties

Bunny coconut melties! Who needs chocolate bunnies when you can have coconut ones? (Oooh wait, I take that back. I still want the chocolate bunnies too!)

 melties 3

So I later made a 2nd batch, with Hot Chocolate Butter.

(No photos of them, though. As their name might suggest, melties aren’t exactly easy to photograph!)

Note: If you can’t find Artisana, you can use homemade coconut butter.

Question of the Day:
Do you love craft stores?

I could spend all day browsing through the stickers, flowers, art supplies, and of course the cake-decorating supplies! Winking smile

Those are so cute! I LOVE craft stores, I generally try to avoid them because I can spend forever inside and end up coming out with a bunch of stuff that I did not intend to get when I walked in!!!

  2. Jojo says

These are so adorable! And these are so much healthier than the candies they sell in the stores with who know what in them.
I love browsing around in Michael’s, too. I especially like the cooking/baking section 😉

  3. Lisa Fine says

Those look so cute! And anything coconut flavored (especially with chocolate) sounds good to me. Last night we had delicious chocolate-covered macaroons for dessert.

I love craft stores, and always get so tempted when I shop in them.

I love this post, and do you know why?! I picked up lil Easter molds at Michaels’ too!! Cause I’m gonna make Junior’s Easter ‘candies’!!! 😮 I was just gonna do the brown ones (carob for him actually, not chocolate) but this is inspiring. I think I’ll do some cocount ones too! He LOVES coconut butter. 🙂

Thanks for the idea Miss K!

  5. Jennifer JCD says

Those are adorable!!! How could you muster up the strength to eat such cuties? Eh, it’s Easter… bunny eating is acceptable as long as no actual bunnies are harmed in doing so. 😉

Ah yes, we love craft stores too! My favourite craft store is this wee shop in a small town that sells almost everything. It’s the cutest little craft shop ever. (And they are the only place I’ve found root beer extract – yummy!)

  6. Emma says

Oh my goodness do I ever love craft stores! I could spend hours browsing paints alone.
Ps. those coconut bunnies look almost to cute to eat! emphasis on almost, 😛

  7. krickit6 says

Oh gosh, those bunnies are the cutest 🙂 I can never get homemade coconut butter to work, probably because of my blender.. so, Ill just come back and look at your pix again, because they are adorable 🙂

    Happy Easter!

I think it also has to do with the outside temperature, oddly enough. Two different people wrote to me that it didn’t work when they tried it in the winter, but they recently tried again and it DID work. Weird! I wish it would work for everyone, all the time :(.

  8. Molly @ MollyRunsFresh says

I love Michaels! I used to absolutely hate scrapbooking because it was an assignment for one of my english classes. Many all-nighters were pulled towards the end of the school year trying to finish it. However when I was done, I was so proud of myself because it was the cutest scrapbook ever and detailed so much about my life, running, friends, family, etc.
Now I can’t wait to work on my high school scrapbook with my mom so I can have all my memories saved before college!

  9. Veronica says

The bunnies are so cute! I made some homemade coconut butter but I didn’t process it long enough and it is grainy so I need a re-take. And hello, my name is Veronica, and I’m a fellow craft store junkie. 🙂

  10. Amy @ ElephantEats says

my goodness…it’s definitely dangerous to put me inside a Michaels with a loaded wallet! But luckily if you subscribe to their email list, you get coupons ALL the time. Makes my visits a liiiiittle cheaper 🙂

  11. Holly @ The Runny Egg says

OK those bunnies are adorable — I’ll take the chocolate ones!

I love craft stores, craft fairs, all of that stuff. I wish I made more time to do actual crafts though!

  13. Charissa says

  17. Dawn @ Blonde on a Mission says

I love browsing in Michael’s Craft Store. I always want to buy the little wooden houses, treasure chests & whatnot that they have and paint them but I can never bring myself to do it! One day this summer, I’m going to do it. Those little bunnies are adorable & look soo yummy. I bet they would taste amazing perched atop a carrot cake boatmeal 🙂

  18. amber says

those are so very cute!!! i wanted to make my own chocolate bunnies, but my local michael’s was out of the molds 3 weeks ago… 🙁 i might have to find a different mold, cause i definitely want to try the coconut ones, event hough they will probably melt insanely fast, cause its already in the 90s down here in florida.

  19. Cara @ EAT.PRAY.RUN. says

There is a Michael’s right next to Trader Joe’s about 2 blocks from my office. Guess where I wander during lunch breaks? Gosh I really am an old lady, but I LOVE getting crafty!

  20. Emma (Sweet Tooth Runner) says

Aww those bunny melties are SO CUTE!! You bad vegan eating little bunnies! 😉

I actually don’t think I’ve ever been to a crafts store…but that’s okay because when I come and visit YOU we can spend a whole day in this Michaels place looking at all the other animal shapes! 😀

  21. Katherine: Unemployed says

I have alwayss wanted to try those molds. the craft store is so distracting… I end up walking down all the aisles and then I realize I’m looking at stuff for 5-year-olds

  22. Abbey Stohs says

    Katie,
My sister just introduced me to your blog, and it is so much fun! Your recipes are fabulous! I get lost in the craft store ALL the time. I could spend hours. Sometimes I go there just to get inspiration for new projects. Thank you for sharing amazing, vegan and raw treats with the world! I appreciate it! 🙂 ~Abbey

  23. Lyza says

They’re so sweet 🙂 I need to go to michael’s and buy some bunny molds so I won’t be jealous of all the non-vegan chocolate bunnies hopping around. 🙂

  24. Mary @ Bites and Bliss says

Getting lost in Michaels is like having a mini treasure hunt..they have so much there!! Have you ever been to a Christmas Tree Store? I got lost in that thing before and had a blast! From gourmet food to camping stuff..it was pretty cool.

  25. Dalai Lina says

I could open up a craft store with all the crap I have bought in anticipation of getting crafty. My daughter is now 5 and I’ll still waiting for the scrapbook fairy to motivate me…

  26. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says

Awww, the bunnies are tooo cute! Love them and love the molds.

I was just in Michael’s 3 days ago. I kinda love craft stores and browsing them like it’s my job. Holy knicknacks and clutter but they can be SUCH gems if you find the right clutter 🙂

Also TJ Maxx, Marshalls, etc for blog dishes and linens and cute sale stuff…perfect.

  27. Rebecca says

Those are so cute! I love going to craft stores, especially Michaels. I ALWAYS find something really neat there and it is easy to get lost in all the great ideas 🙂

  28. Laura says

I think I might be missing something with the coconut melties! I feel awful saying it, but I made them and I thought they were were…not good. It was a bit like eating soap, to be honest! I’ll try mixing in some chocolate next time. (Or possibly just pour the melted chocolate into the moulds! 🙂

  29. Jess says

man those look good; too bad i already had my candy today. maybe i’ll head over tomorrow, idk, if my schedule allows. i used to love craft stores, but my lack of funds kept me from buying…or going lol.

  30. Sarah says

Hi Katie! For Passover, my mom always makes haroset, which is made out of fruits and nuts. Haroset appears on the seder plate to remind us of the mortar the Israelites’ used while slaves in Egypt. Anyway! As I always do right before Passover, I was thinking about all the foods I wouldn’t be able to eat during the holiday, namely…Larabars, because they don’t have Passover certification. I was thinking how Larabars are kind of like haroset, and how hard my mom works every year to make the haroset…which is when I remembered your fudge baby recipes! Long story short, your gingerbread babies made a welcome appearance on my family’s seder plate. Everyone loved it! And my mom, who has always ground up the dates with the nuts by hand, was amazed by how quick it was in a blender.

Also, I was craving a cupcake today…so of course I made a single lady cupcake, with almond flour! Om nom nom. Thank you Katie!!!

  35. MC says

These look adorable. I’m always afraid the little plastic molds will met with warm chocolate, but I’ve had good results using ice cub makers with adorable shapes! There are all sorts online for a few bucks a pop. Super cute.
