*Nutrition info is based on the Pumpkin Bread Baked Oatmeal, but all flavors are pretty similar, nutritionally-speaking. I usually add some form of nut butter to my boatmeal, but I’ve calculated the nutritional info without the optional nut butter for those of you who wish to keep it low-cal. (Add 100 calories per tablespoon of nut butter or oil, if using.)

chocolate covered katie shop

Along with my oatmeal cake I had a green smoothie in a bowl, unpictured, due to its ugliness. It’s not easy being green. And then I got ready for our family’s annual Christmas-shopping outing. My sister just loves these… Don’t you, Michelle? I’m sure she was extremely disappointed to miss it this year. (Sarcasm!)

Going Christmas shopping with my mom is intense. She gets on a roll. (No pun intended.)

Ay I love it!! Genius 🙂
I vote you make either a kabocha squash boatmeal cake (I make them hot – oats with cooked mashed squash and cinnamon and salt and nutmeg and a bit of water, cooked on the stove then left in the oven for a few mins….holy yum), but with added dates! And chocolate chips! Oh crikey. I want that now 😛
Orrrr banoffee. Cos I like banana banoffee stuff 🙂

  2. Dana says

I love the idea of ‘Hummingbird Cake’ for boatmeal. Throw in coconut, chopped pecans, crushed pineapple, and mashed bananas. Add cinnamon and a little vanilla extract for extra flavor. Then ‘frost’ it with a coconut butter! Mmmm so I am officially drooling. Off to make Hummingbird boatmeal Cake!

  3. Amalia says

Well, brownie batter boatmeal (BBB), of course!!! You ARE chocolate covered, right?

My second choice would be a “green apple” boatmeal using spinach for the green color… with raspberries or cranberries on top we could have Christmas boatmeal on our hands 🙂

My third choice would be beet boatmeal (BB) again…the Christmas theme 🙂 You could put pistachios on top to complete the theme!

  4. Hanna M. says

Maybe you could make a filling or bottom layer of something? Chocolate (meeelting…) or nut butter, or apple sauce and cinnamon. Also, chopped walnuts are good in anything.

  5. Jennifer says

I made the pumpkin boatmeal for breakfast this morning and it was delicious! It made my apartment smell so good!

I was actually thinking of replacing the pumpkin with applesauce and adding crasins for an cran-apple take on the boatmeal! Hmmm….maybe tomorrow morning.

    Thanks for another great recipe!

      • Melissa says

I’ve done that! HH’s recipe calls for applesauce as the fat replacer/binder. It’s reeeallly good. Especially with bits of dried apples added. I use unsweetened cinnamon applesauce.

I also got some cups of peach applesauce to try out in the recipe since peaches and cream was my favorite when I ate the crappy microwaveable, so not vegan, Quaker quick packages. 😉

I also pureed some frozen strawberries and mixed them with the milk in a boatmeal once. Also tasty! I love that it’s so open for experimentation. 🙂

  6. Brandae says

First thought was chocolate peanut butter – but I can’t eat peanuts right now – sooooo I’d go with an almond butter n’ jelly cake. 🙂 Can’t wait to try this recipe!!!

  7. Caitlin says

Oh fun! In honor of Veteran’s Day and all our hard-fighting troops, I suggest some sort of Red, White, and Blue Boatmeal. Maybe red berries (strawberries, raspberries, dried cranberries?), coconut, and…something blue. Or a better flavor combination with the same color scheme hehe.

OR, for Thanksgiving, I would make Pecan Pie Boatmeal because pecans are yummy!

  8. neslie says

    How about Malted Coconut Boatmeal?!
You know…kinda like malt-o-meal, but with a twist (using maca and coconut milk/butter).

  9. courtney says

My favorite oatmeal add-ins are golden raisins, dried cranberries, and walnuts; I think they would taste great in a boatmeal cake! Or if you are feeling creative, perhaps a spin on carrot cake boatmeal?

  10. Purplegirl says

You should maaakkkeee…… raspberry chocolate chip boatmeal! Or everything boatmeal. Throw in coconut, cinnamon, chocolate chips, pumpkin seeds, nuts, dried cranberries, dates, etc.

  11. Mandiee says

How fun that it turned into a little cake! I think anything with coconut butter would be absolutely marvelous. Perhaps a tropical boatmeal with pineapple, coconut, and mango (or banana)? Or maybe a (vegan) Elvis boatmeal with bananas and peanut butter? I think a layered effect would be quite nice with that one. Hey, it would be like a layer cake, especially if you “frosted” it with banana butter. Oh boy, the ideas just keep coming :D.

    Have a lovely day!
    xox

  12. Frances says

how about pear boatmeal, with some coconut butter mixed in? topped with a swirl of vegan hazelnut-chocolate spread! ok, ok, that’s not that interesting…but if it were me, i’d be making a kinda gross combo: some sort of homemade jam (raspberry, maybe?), crushed peanuts, and…get this…nutritional yeast! (I like the earthy, salty flavor!)

  13. Ariel says

Gorgeous! You’ve certainly inspired me to make my first dish of boatmeal (such a fun word!). What about a savory baked oatmeal? I’m imagining a boatmeal with miso, wild mushrooms, and kabocha with arame for garnish… ooh, or what about a Fall curried boatmeal with kale and delicata squash, served with toasted squash seeds? *dashes off to kitchen*

  14. McKenzie says

You should make different flavoured oatmeal and layer them together. Strawberry and chocolate, peanut butter and chocolate, pumpkin and chocolate. Chocolate definitely needs to be in there somewhere. 🙂

  15. mr says

i advocate a “lime in the coconut” boatmeal cake. lime zest, lime juice, and coconut butter/milk in the oats, and then frost with with a lime coconut butter frosting, and sprinkle with ROASTED coconut, nom!

  16. Demelza says

Haha, you are too adorable Katie. That boatmeal cake looks spifftastic.
I wish I had a decent sized oven proof container. :s

Hmm I think it’d be fun to make some Girl Scout cookie inspired boatmeal. ;]
Right now I am loving on some protein ice cream. I used French Vanilla protein powder
and So Delicious unsweetened coconut milk and OHMYGOODNESS it is so
amazingly creamy I can’t believe it. Topped with some Soyatoo and flaked coconut
    I am in heaven. <3

P.S. I am totally calling you out on your Chandler Bing reference, whether it was intentional or not. ;] ("Can breakfast GET any cooler?" Haha, I don't know–could Joey BE wearing any more clothes!?)

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

LOLOL yeah, that didn’t go unnoticed with me… but I felt I’d better not mention the reference because I JUST made an almost-identical reference on the blog last week. I can’t help it! Ya know, Friends is just universal… it applies to every single situation and person in the world!

Oh, and that Joey episode is hilarious!! 🙂

  17. Ilana says

I think a chai-spiced chocolate boatmeal cake sounds loverly.
Not just because I had chai-spiced chocolate oats for breakfast.

  18. ruby red says

    Hiiiii Katie!

Okay, so don’t change your boatmeal cake. What you need to do is add to it! Gently heat a 1/2 cup of blueberries in a tsp of maple syrup on your stovetop. Pour over your pumpkin boatmeal, add pieces of a chopped dried fig, and drizzle some sunflower seed butter on the top. Magic!! Trust me. I make this in stovetop oat bran form every morning and I haven’t gotten hooked off of it yet, and it’s been a month and a half. (Cashew butter is good with this too if you want to mix it up instead of having Sunbutter.) Sounds like a weird combo, but you gotta believe me. Now I have to try boatmeal, I really really am intrigued!! Thanks for enlightening me!

  19. Julia says

Spiced apple cider boatmeal cake! Or maybe black forest cherry cocao… My fave way to have oatmeal is with pumpkin puree, coconut oil, and chunks of crisp granny smith apple sprinkled with cinnamon and salt!

  20. Rosalie B says

I love the sweet spice of cinnamon, ginger and cardamom (key!) with oats; throw in some currants, dates, pistachios or cashews, and top with tahini! Very middle-Eastern inspired, methinks.

  21. amy says

I would love to see a caramel apple boatmeal cake.

p.s. i think boatmeal is the cutest name ever, and i’m trying out your recipe tomorrow morning :).

  22. izzy says

Your baked oatmeal turned out a bajillion times prettier than mine does! Some day I will master the culinary wonders of Katie’s kitchen 😉

I can only imagine what a tropical boatmeal (cake) would taste like – coconut shreads and milk, pineapple, macadamia nuts. Mmmmm! (Yes, I know it’s November ;P) Gingerbread would be divine as well, I’m sure!

    izzyy
    xoxo

  23. spoonfulofsugarfree says

Make chocolate banana oatmeal!!!! It will taste like one of those chocolate-covered monkey tails! remember those?

      • Travis and Amy says

Hey Katie: We made something like this, and we call it Chunky Monkey Boatmeal, after your boatmeal and Ben&Jerry’s ice cream flavor. We use the pumpkin boatmeal recipe as a start, but use banana instead of pumpkin, add Ghiardelli chocolate chunks, nutmeg, and walnuts. It’s a great combination!

  24. bloomingbuzz says

yum…looks so good! oatmeal has definitely become one of my staples now that i’m in college and the extent of cooking is done in a microwave. definitely trying this as soon as i get back in a kitchen at home!

  25. Claire says

Ohhh I want it, I want it … buuuut we’re out of oats … I wonder who could have done that? *shifty eyes*
On a totally unrelated note, I was just wondering how long (roughly) if takes you to do your run? I had a look in the FAQ but I don’t think it was there 😛

  26. Emma says

Oh jeez, I can’t pick just one! Carrot cake sounds really good… maybe pb+cinnamon? Or apple cinnamon?

BTW, would you mind describing the differences between boatmeal and reg oatmeal? I’m trying to convince myself to try it… usually I just pop my quick oats into the microwave and having to cook it for so long would be a big switch!

  27. Amber Shea @Almost Vegan says

Tropical boatmeal! Coconut milk, chopped pineapple or mango, crushed macadamia nuts, and maybe some coconut butter for good measure. 😉 (Works with the boat metaphor too – think cruise ship/BOAT, islands, palm trees… :P)

  28. themalikwhey says

I’m guessing South African dwellers can’t really participate in giveaways? Lol! 😀

In terms of flavours, just do whatever floats your boat(meal)! (Ah, I tried… comedy is not really my strong point). But in all seriousness, how about some chopped banana and pineapple in the cake, “iced” with melted coconut butter and sprinkled with shredded coconut for a tropical treat! xxx

  29. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says

    cute cake!

you know how i always say that I have a recipe that looks like that…well, I have a recipe for muffins that are vegan blueberry streussel muffins as well as vegan cinny raisin…they both start out with oats and end up after baking looking so similar to your little cake! It’s so cute, i want to call it a cake-let. Or a cake-mini 🙂

  30. Jae says

    Ginger cookie boatmeal cake 🙂

*gingerbread is my favorite… along with oreos.. thats why 🙂

On the otherhand… an oreo boatmeal cake would be nasty right? 😀

  31. Tara says

I think adding apple to it would be delicious. Like a jewish apple cake! yum! Or carrot, raisins, and coconut butter for carrot cake. You have had just about everythin “carrot-caked” so why not boatmeal?

  32. Bianca- Vegan Crunk says

Ok, now I really MUST make this. Gotta buy some new ramekins. That is freakin’ adorable. Love the Soyatoo on top!!

  33. Albizia says

Whatever flavor you make, it will always be amazing!

This time I won’t suggest coffee, although the combination of warm oatmeal and coffee sounds heavenly. Maybe I would go for white chocolate, coconut and raspberries first.

  34. Kiersten says

Now that’s a cake I wouldn’t mind eating all the time! I bet you could come up with some really creative flavor ideas for more “Boatmeal” cakes.

  35. Fi says

That looks yum!! how about spiced apple and ginger oatmeal cake? that would be kinda xmassy, throw in some cinamon and nutmeg, maybe some roasted chestnuts, 🙂
    xxx

  36. Cynthia K says

Snickerdoodle boatmeal gets my vote! I cannot wait for the weekend when I have time to make breakfast w/my little girl; I bet she’ll actually eat this! I normally can’t get her to eat oatmeal. “Too geekee, mama” (the English translation of this is “too sticky, Mama.”) But she’ll eat oatmeal muffins. And if she had her own tiny cake? Oh man! Katie, you rock! Thanks for another super idea.

  37. Kelsey says

hahaha a little boat meal- ur quite the sailor my dear <3 that looks really decadent with the toppings as well 🙂

btw wanted to let you know I posted the link to my Hug-A-Vegan on the Hug-A-Vegan page 🙂 You will love it! It should definitely make you laugh! <3

  38. Joni Mercer says

so- making this AGAIN LOL- I really cant get enough- I am actually going for sugar free chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon of my homemade coconut butter- (THNX TO YOU!!! I LOVE IT BTW!!!!)

    THANK YOU!!!

    Joni

  39. Lorin says

I love this recipe! I am making it this morning, but I don’t have a ramekin so I made it into 3 small oatmeal cupcakes. So good! 🙂

  40. Dixie C. says

Your “oatmeal cake flavors” link isn’t working. Thought you’d want to know.
I am loving your site. I’m not vegetarian, but I am trying to cut WAY down on the sugar my family consumes…without being “that mom”. Thanks for the inspiration!

  41. vicki says

Katie, I’ve fallen in love w/boatmeal, but I have a question about the nutritional information. How could it be only 180 calories when the oatmeal alone is 190 calories? (Bob’s Red Mill) I used Cron-O-Meter (free online software for calculating and keeping track of daily intakes) and after I plug in your recipe I came up w/427 Calories for the pumpkin pie boatmeal. Am I doing something wrong?

  42. Erica says

I became officially obsessed with Pumpkin Boatmeal and ate it for 2 weeks straight – until I realized I had a small allergy to cinnamon! I decided to experimental with different flavors and found a new favorite (although higher calorie) boatmeal! Peanut Butter Banana Boatmeal! Toss in a few chocolate chips and it might as well be dessert!

  43. Katie @ Nutrition in a peanut shell says

Hi Katie, I just made this this morning ( a pretty standard apple/cinnamon though!) I read wrong an accidentally did 1/2c applesauce instead of a 1/4. I absolutely loved it! I almost ate it raw, too 🙂

It was a little moist still though, and the middle stayed a little raw. Was this because of my applesauce mess up or is this just normal?

  44. Lf says

Katie LOVE your site 🙂 I was wondering since you post the nutritional facts could you post grams of carbs in the oatmeal cake as well? I’m a figure competitor and want to make this but have to make sure I know the grams of carbs. I can figure it out if it’s too much of an inconvenience 🙂 thanks so much!!!

  45. Stefanie says

I’m sorry if this question has already been answered, but does it matter which type of oats? Quick-cooking or old-fashioned? I am sooo looking forward to making this on Saturday when I don’t have to rush to work! Btw, I just discovered your blog about 10 days ago, and I have had a great time looking over all the recipes. 🙂

  46. Katie says

    Hey Katie!
Words cannot express how much I adore you and your recipes! I look forward to coming home after long days at work and unwinding by finding a low guilt chocolate treat to bake from your site. To put it simply, you brighten my days. 🙂
So I am excited to say that just bought some coconut oil (for the first time). As a rookie, in the world of baking with coconut oil, I am wondering if I can use it in place of the other oils in all your recipes or will it not work in some?
ps If ever you find the time to revamp your site, adding a search bar would be super helpful. Often I have an ingredient leftover from a prior experiment (ie canned pumpkin) and am looking for something to use it in as to not waste. As it turns out, I typically am way more excited about something else I find on your site first and end up having to bake 2 recipes (more leftover ingredients!) Also, a “scroll to top” button would be rockin’ too–pinterest wins big for that! 🙂

  47. Sophie says

I just made this for breakfast! It was sooooo yummy! I sort of used the oatmeal raisin recipe, but i made it into a blueberry muffin kind of thing. Thanks so much for all the inspiring breakfast ideas! I swear i come to this site every morning 🙂

  48. Mikayla Sweitzer says

I make one of these for breakfast at least twice a week and it keep me full forever! I even threw some hersheys special dark cocoa in and a tad extra stevia and dark chocolate chips and it’s the best thing ever.

  49. Bobbi says

I calculated these on spark and for some reason mine is coming up with WAY more than 180 cals. I don’t know why but it is. Just wondering how you calculated, maybe spark isn’t reliable?

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

I’ve actually used spark recipes for some things. I think a few of their ingredients are incorrectly listed. I know oats are incorrectly listed on that site, in terms of calories.

1/2 cup raw rolled oats has around 150 calories.

  50. Sheila says

Can you tell me how many carbs are in this recipe. I do weight watchers and love your recipes. Even for other recipes the carbs would be a nice thing to add!

    Thanks

  51. Taylor says

Wow, definitely trying this tomorrow! 🙂 Just a question- do you prefer to bake your boatmeal with milk or water?

  52. Marissa says

So, I’ve tried and loved a few of your recipes that I’ve found through Pinterest, but after reading all these posts about oatmeal, I’m hooked. Time to subscribe or follow!

My dream flavors: Strawberry shortcake, Pina Colada, Carmel Apple, or Banoffee. Can you tell I like fruit? 😉

  53. Amber says

This is a great recipe. I quadrupled it and made it for my whole family. It is a nice change from regular boring oatmeal. I will be doing this again. Thanks for the recipe! :0)

  54. sammy says

How do u eat boat meal? With a fork? Like a bar or muffin? Like a wheatable cereal and pour milk over top? I’m new to the page but I’ve loved every recipe I’ve seen. I love oats! And you’re teaching me so much about raw and vegan and gluten etc. This has become one of my favorite sites! So are boatmeals meant to be enjoyed as a muffin type and in milk. Some of the boatmeals look like I should use a fork but others look super creamy….
    Thanks Katie!

  55. Ruby Frey says

Katie I made this and it was absolutely delicious! You should make a youtube channel with your desserts! You would get tonnes of subscribers, your blog is GENIUS and all my desserts from now on are going to be yours xx 🙂

  56. Presley says

I have all of the ingredients at home except for rolled oats. Can this be made with steel cut oats instead? I realize the calorie count changes, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is whether or not I have to head to the store!

    Thank you.

  57. Laura says

Does anyone know a way to make this in the microwave? Could I microzap it and then cook it for like 5 min so it gets crispy? I want to have it for breakfast but I don’t have 20 to wait for it to cook! 🙁

  58. Toots Mc' Tooter (happy tooter) says

    dear Katie,
since i am forever alone, the singlet oatmeal is the one for me! i cant believe how oat-y it is! i love how filling it is, yet it leaves room for my apple sauce! my stomach screams for your delicous eddability and i also would like to mention how pretty you are! no one takes a self oriented shot like you do!
    IM ALL ABOUT THE OATS!!!!
because you know what they say….oats mah goats!
    -Albert

  59. CC says

Hmm, Katie? I wanted 2 try 2 make this but there is no actual recipe or directions?! Help! I linked in from your main All things Oatmeal link….

    Cheers!

  60. Mary Johnson says

    Dear Katie,
I can’t tell you how much your lovely recipes have meant to me. I’ve lost 10 of 40 pounds in a month with one of your recipes for breakfast and a snack everyday. My husband (who also has a huge chocolate/sweet tooth) is eating them as well and loves them. I particularly like the recipes with beans and oats, since the protein is there right along with the carbs. Also, I have to eat gluten and soy free. Thank you so much Katie. I can really say you have helped to change our lives. (Did I forget to mention delicious?).

    Gratefully,

    Mary

  61. Bianca Myles says

Thank you so much for posting these delicious recipes. I usually don’t eat oatmeal but I decided to pin this anyway. I’m glad I did. So far I’ve made the banana bread one and today it’s the cinnamon roll one. They are both very good. I can’t wait to try the others 🙂

  62. Bianca says

These are soooo cute I just want to eat them! 😀
I was wondering: can you update this page to include some of your newer additions, like the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Baked Oatmeal? So that whenever I crave one of the boat meals, I can just find it easily!

  63. Cassandra v says

What can I use as a substitute for all of these baked oatmeal recipes if I can’t use the banana or applesauce? I’m intolerant to fruits and vegetables…. So the fruit ingredients will kill me!

  64. Colleen Adkins says

    Love your recipes!!!!
Any ideas for making your “Boatmeal” into a large dish?? To share
To serve 4-8 or more?? Maybe into a casserole dish??
    Thanks Colleen

  65. Megan says

I made the Cinnamon Bun Boatmeal, and when I plugged the recipe into Spark Recipe Calculator, it came up with 282 calories and 57 carbs, rather than the numbers you have here.

  66. J says

    hey katie

thank you so much for the baled oatmeal recipe.i’ve never been a fan of oats until i tried these recipes, and right now i actually have to force myself to have other things for other meals instead of baked oatmeal.im jot sure how healthy they become after all the addins like sugar and salt, but theyre too delicious and easy to make to not eat.

However, i wanted to ask what the function of the mashed fruit OR applesauce that you have in those recipes.are they used ijnplave of eggs, as a binder? in which case is it possible to omit it or use an actual egg, you think?this is in the interest of someone trying to lose weight.
