Healthy Apple Crumble!

Secretly healthy apple crumble, with a rich and buttery crumble that literally melts in your mouth.

A little-known fact about me:

I love apple crumble so much that I sometimes choose it over chocolate.

I’ve been known to choose it over dinner, too. It all started during my freshman year of high school, one night before the prom, when my group of friends ate at a place called at Tony Roma’s. Naturally, all of the boys ordered steaks or ribs. And naturally, all of the girls ordered salads. Apparently that’s the stereotypical ladylike thing to do when you go out on a date.

Uninterested in the prospect of lettuce as dinner, I scoured the menu for something more substantial. For vegetarians, the offerings were pretty slim.

However, I noticed they had apple crumble on the dessert menu. Topped with ice cream, of course. So that became my dinner—and it was awesome. From then on, every time we went out to a not-so-vegetarian-friendly place like Tony Roma’s or Hard Rock or TGI Friday’s, I didn’t worry what to get for lunch or dinner… I just ordered apple crumble!

This healthy apple crumble reminds me of the one from Tony Roma’s–sweet cinnamon apples mixed with buttery crumbles…  it is perfect for any time of the year (but especially Fall).  It also makes a generous serving, not some little half-cup thing.

Try topping it with this recipe: Homemade Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.

Healthy Apple Crumble Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 medium-sized apple, diced small
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp milk of choice
  • 1/2 tsp apple pie spice (you can probably sub cinnamon)
  • 1 stevia packet or 1-2 tbsp sugar or sucanat
  • optional add-ins: walnuts, raisins, etc.
  • 3 tbsp quick oats (15g) (For substitution notes, see nutrition link below.)
  • 2 tsp oat flour (or another flour of choice) (4g)
  • 1 tbsp oil or butter-type spread (such as Smart Balance Light or Earth Balance) (15g) (For a fat-free substitution, see "nutrition facts" link below.)

Instructions

Healthy Apple Crumble Recipe: Preheat oven to 350 F and grease an oven-safe 2-cup dish. In a small mixing bowl, combine first five ingredients (and optional add-ins, if desired). Stir well. In a separate mixing bowl, combine remaining three ingredients and stir well. Now mix everything together and pour into the greased dish. (If you like a more-crumbly crumble, increase the amounts of the last three ingredients.) Bake 40 minutes (in the middle of the oven, not the very top), then turn the oven to high-broil for 2-3 minutes. Turn off heat, but let sit in oven 15 more minutes.

    I think that as long as you eat healthy most of the time, you are good to go to eat dessert for dinner every now and then!

    Dessert for dinner is most definitely acceptable!! especially if it’s your healthier desserts x) I am guilty of this on more than one occasion. As long as i have my veggies in,(as I crave them if I don’t get enough in a day) I don’t see why not! x)

    Dessert for dinner….hmmm, I’d say not for me. If it’s in the form of a smoothie, and I can throw some chard or a green veggie in, then I feel better! This is great! I just made an apple crisp the other night and have been craving it again. I like to do a combo of apples and blueberries, but the oat topping is what I really love. 🙂

    I think that dessert for dinner totally depends on two things: Whether or not it is healthy, and whether or not it is a frequent thing or just a special occasion. If it’s healthy, why not? Eat it for every meal! 🙂 If it’s not, just enjoy it once in a while.

    I love the idea of a single-serving version. I think I’ll try topping this with banana ice cream. Have you ever mixed banana and apple together? I wonder how it will taste.

    when I was a poor university student, me and my housemates used to cook up a main meal at home first (to save £) and then go out to eat dessert only at a restaurant! We took our time and made an evening of it with a little bit of alcohol alongside…those were the days! 🙂

    I love that you ordered desserts as dinner! It’s true though, when you’re a vegetarian your better off finding something on the dessert menu that the dinner menu!

    Hi Katie, I was wondering if you (or anyone else reading this) can help me – I want to make vegan ice cream for a family thing (as my cousin is vegan) and would like it to resemble regular (full fat) ice cream as much as possible, but without having to use coconut cream as the base (I’m making rum & raisin ice cream so don’t want the coconut flavour). I realise that the point of your recipes is that they’re low calorie (and usually very low fat), but I was wondering if you might have some ideas that you haven’t posted on the blog (like a non-diet ice cream you make for yourself)? I would be so grateful for any tips! (Please don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t want to try the ice cream recipes you already have up, I’m sure they’re a great substitute if you’re watching your calorie intake, but I’ve tried making ice cream with milk in the past and find it too thin, and lacking that creamy ice cream texture.) Anyway, thanks in advance!

      Have you tried creamer? I recommend Silk creamer. I think all my recipes–the ones that call for an ice cream maker–have a creamer option. And it’d work in the vita recipes as well. The only thing is that it’s best to serve homemade ice creams when you make them (or within a few hours). Otherwise, you’ll have to thaw a little, as homemade ice creams lack the stabilizers present in commercial ice creams.

      I am actually working on a cashew-based ice cream recipe, as well as a pistachio one for the cookbook. But neither is completely perfected yet.

    Let me just say, I LOVE ME SOME CHOCOLATE-COVERED KATIE! I sing your praises on pinterest and FB and your recipes are delish!
    I am a low-carber, but not necessarily GF, vegan, or vegetarian. Your recipes have offered me great options to the traditional low carb/ southbeach desserts and I have been able to substitute and “play with them” to great result.

    I had dessert for breakfast this morning… healthy ice cream (using some soy milk and vegan raw protein powder) and a slightly improvised single lady pumpkin cake.

    When I was training for a marathon I would eat 2 – 3 tubs of Edy’s ice cream (yes, those 10-12 servings big tubs) in a weekend easily. Unfortunately I have a soft spot for ice cream so if I buy it, I eat it.. all of it… as quickly as humany possible.

    I eat a dessert like dinner every once in awhile. But I always end up wanting more dessert afterward, which can turn into a bad thing.

    Acceptable, but I don’t think it always agrees with me.

    Back in college my roommate and I decided to each eat a pint of Ben and Jerry’s before dinner…and never ended up eating anything else for the evening. So ice cream was my dinner, but I felt kind of lethargic and blah.

    I think some apple crumble would have given me the extra oomph that I needed!

    I live by the 80/20 rule . . . 80 percent of the time I eat very healthfully, lots of fruits and veggies, nuts, grains, and water. And 20 percent of the time I splurge!

    So, if you are (for the most part) following a balanced diet, a few nights of dessert for dinner never hurt anyone. 😉

    I was also one of those girls that never cared what other people thought when eating in restaurants =)

    I actually could never stand something like this in my pre-vegan days, but then I realised I just didn’t like the fake crazy sugared stuff, I like actual flavours (like real cinnamon etc).

    KATIE! Seriosly, I had apple crumble for dinner about a month ago . . . my mom made apple crisp for the family, and she made a vegan version for me! When I got home from work, I saw it . . . and decided that it looked better than whatever else was hanging around . . . and ate it. 😀 It was goooooood. You’re looks super yummy.     This has nothing to do with the post (although apple crumble sounds awesome right now) but in health class today, we were talking about drugs and in the book it says that cocaine comes from the leaves of the cocoa plant…. Is that why chocolate is so addictive? 😉

    I made this last night and it was so good! I noticed that the cooking time seemed a bit high (after the 3 minutes broiling mine was almost burned, but it was still delicious). I made it using evaporated milk, 1 tablespoon of white sugar, and 2 teaspoons of whole-wheat flour (because I was too lazy to grind up oats for that amount of oat flour) and 1 tablespoon of butter and got 291 calories for the whole recipe. Split it with the husband and topped with ice cream for a perfect post-dinner snack. Yum!

      I just tried it again to be sure, after reading your comment, and it still worked for me… but I know ovens can vary in temperature, and I’ve never actually calibrated mine. One of ours could quite possibly be incorrectly calibrated (it’s very common). That’s a project for me this weekend. But in the meantime I lowered the temperature in the recipe, as it won’t hurt it to cook a little less, regardless. Thanks for the feedback!

        I would be pretty willing to bet that my oven isn’t calibrated correctly, so that could be the problem. Our house was built in 1971, and while I’m pretty sure the oven isn’t original to the house I bet it’s at least 10 years old. We’ve also noticed that the back of the oven cooks food more quickly than the front. So it could be my oven is wonky, not yours. 🙂 I also cooked mine in a cereal bowl that is oven-safe, so it probably cooked slightly different than it would have in a ramiken that has straight sides (if that made sense).

        P.S. Do you have more than one oven? I’m jealous. My oven is fairly small, and during the holidays it would be really nice to have two!

This year I’m having to accommodate my dairy-free self at our family’s Thanksgiving and will be making my own dessert (and a few other dishes) while the rest of the family eats pumpkin pie…so now it’s between this (one serving), the crust-less pumpkin pie, or the chocolate-pecan. You give me too many choices! Maybe I’ll have a Thanksgiving eve dessert, and a black Friday dessert and just try them all lol

    THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this recipe! I have had to go off of processed sugar because of a sugar sensitivity and Apple Crisp is one of the desserts I have missed the very most. I made this last night for my family after dinner and we all loved it. I thought it was perfectly sweet enough and delicious. I will be making this one again and again. I actually doubled the “crust” ingredients and loved the amount of chewiness.

    Hi, I’m wondering how you got less than 10 grams of fat for the entire serbing, when one tablespoon of butter has fifteen grams of fat. Did I do my calculations incorrectly or should you spilt the recipe into two servings?

      I’d imagine she went by the Smart Balance Light listed first, which has 5 grams of fat per tablespoon according to their website.

    i just made this! it makes so much i split it with my brother who loves apple pie, but is not vegan! like you suggested, i doubled the crumble ingredients and added some walnuts. i only used 1 tbsp of sugar in the mix, but after i put everything in the dish, i sprinkled some sugar on top so it would make a nice caramelized crust. i also used cinnamon cause i didnt have apple pie spice and it still tasted wonderful!

    Hi!! I just want to complement you!!! So far everything of yours we have tried has been great. I am a mother of 5 with number 6 due in a few weeks- so we had to triple the recipe. My 11 year old and 14 year old made these for lunch today:-) they are fantastic. We used coconut oil and it was great. Thank you!!!!!

    Could I substitute the stevia with honey? I don’t have stevia right now and I don’t want to use pure white sugar. What do you recommend?

      I know this is really late, but I did mine with just a little squeeze of agave and it turned out perfectly. Honey should work the same.

    Could this be baked in a toaster oven or microwaved? I have a feeling that it can’t just because it has to be beaked for 40 minutes at 350 F, but I thought I should ask anyway. I don’t like using the oven a lot because it can make my kitchen way to hot 😛

    SO PERFECT. I made this for myself and my parents tonight in ramekins and we loved it! We used 3 organic apples (honey crisp, golden delicious, and Granny Smith) from the Farmers’ Market, rolled oats, WW pastry flour, lots of cinnamon, and coconut oil. I used stevia in mine and raw turbinado sugar for my parents’. We also didn’t use any milk. It was a wonderfully satisfying fall dessert. Thanks!

    Hi Katie! -waves- I’m pretty sure I’m your biggest fan… I make your recipes every day, and tell all of my friends/clients about your blog. You’re amazing!
    Now…I’ve never altered your recipes, but I’m guilty here, and I had to share. I doubled the last ingredients, and -dun dun dun duuuuun!- MOLASSES! 1 tbs. I split it in half and shared with my fiance….Almost ate his share. The molasses gives it that “brown sugar” taste. I use this in recipes that call for brown sugar. Ill do xylitol and molasses usually, totally works! Just wanted to share because I’ve noticed brown sugar in some of your recipes and I know how you like to include substitutions! In this recipe no need for xylitol but the molasses made it that much better! Hope you try and like!

    This is sooooo yummy!
    I doubled the recipe, and it makes more than enough for 2. I used coconut oil, added some chia bran, and made extra crumble-using almond flour.

    Yummy. I’ve been playing with this recipe for the last week or so and so far haven’t managed to mess it up. I like it as written, but doubled for two of us. And I’ve used strawberries (on sale this week and I was dying for berries), with cinnamon instead of apple pie spice.
    I’m curious about the last step of broiling and then leaving in oven. How does this help the recipe?

    Has anyone tried doing this in the microwave? I did it a while ago, microwaved it for three minutes(with plastic wrap on it), and put it under the broiler for 2-3 minutes. It worked really well

    Apple crumble is amazing! We live close to this amazing group of orchards called Apple Hill (in California; I’m in Nevada) and each year for my sister’s birthday we go over there and go apple picking, and then I always make an apple crumble when we get home.     Hi Katie. I tried this out and can I tell you, it was the best part of a really terrible day.

    I was recently diagnosed with an autoimmune disease which has put me on an elimination diet, throwing almost everything I like to eat (including many veggies and healthy foods) out the window. I was having the worst day and I tried this recipe, and so far, it is the most actual dessert-tasting gluten-free vegan and sugar free dessert I’ve ever had. Definitely scratched that sugar itch, and was generally delicious.

    I loved it! I might try some more of your recipes soon!

I ended Up finding a different recipe online that wasn’t close as being as healthy to yours & the recipe I used Had way too much brown sugar, butter, etc. of course I would’ve Preferred yours since I make Many of your recipes often.     I made This recipe just now & although it was good, I do Feel like it would be better if the butter was melted & then mixed in with oats mixture so next time I’m doing it this way to see if It has more of a crisp. However, the recipe was still delicious. Thank you for posting. It definitely is less heavy than other recipes out there so I prefer this.

    I make this recipe often & love it but I’m really trying to cut calories. Can I use My home made unsweetened apple sauce in place of the butter or no? Have you ever tested this recipe with home made apple sauce? Or does the butter bring out a flavor mixed with the oats & flour that’s more important? I do Enjoy this recipe when I’m in a pinch & need it just for me. It’s delicious but I wanna lower the calories/fat combination. Thanks.
