About the Boy

The other day, I walked into a local sporting-good store, intent on scouting out the Nike running gear. But when I chanced upon the clerk in the shoe department, said running-gear-scouting was forgotten.

We talked for over an hour—first about running (which, it turns out, we both love), and then about basically every other topic under the sun. In the end, I did buy a new running outfit… and got a date at the same time!

clothes

And I needed this new running outfit. No really, I did. Ok, so maybe I didn’t. But when I got home and discovered I had a matching-colored sports bra…

greenport 269

Well, let’s just say I decided it was destiny that told me to buy the outfit.

EDIT: To answer a blog question from Runner Girl (a sweet blogger and reader): Were you nervous, or was it awkward, when you told [the boy] that you were a vegan?

Answer: As proud as I am to be a vegan, I will admit to sometimes feeling a little self-conscious telling people about it, due to how society views any ideas that deviate from the norm. When I first became a vegan, I definitely did shy away from telling people. But I’ve come to realize it doesn’t really matter what others think of my diet. It certainly doesn’t mean we can’t be friends, agreeing to disagree. (In the few cases where someone can’t respectfully “agree to disagree” about my diet, well… who wants to be friends with such a person anyway?)

Also, I feel so passionately about my love for animals and disgust at their treatment on factory farms. If I don’t speak up, fewer people learn about the horrors that the meat industry hopes to keep quiet. So when I stay quiet, the animals suffer more because of my cowardice, and I am actually helping the meat industry.

When the subject came up, I was 100% candid with the boy. And he, in turn, was 100% cool with my veganism. In fact, he has two friends who are vegans. He’s not a vegetarian, but does love animals (with a rescue pup at home), and he is interested in the “clean eating” mentality. Like many athletic guys, he’s into the whole “protein” thing, and drinks a lot of protein shakes.

Question of the Day:

Do you ever feel awkward telling others about your healthy diet habits/quirks?

I used to worry that others would see my diet (and, by extension, me) as weird. But finally, I realized: This is who I am. Not everyone has to like it, as long as I am happy with my choices!

P.S. I’ll keep you updated on the date!! 🙂

But you look smashing when you’re wearing a pink shirt, green shorts, and blue socks in the rain! Oh, and the new outfit with heels looks great on you. No matter what you wear, you always look fabulous!

Congratultions on landing a date with Sport-Store Hottie. I think it’s great, even if you know you’re leaving soon. Have fun!

As for me, sometimes I try to match my workout clothes but it rarely ever happens. Meh. It’s all going to be a sweaty mess in an hour, do it doesn’t matter.

  2. Marina says

I hope your date will be fun!
I love your workout outfit! I don’t have such cool workout clothes, but I try to look somewhat ok during my runs. But the most important thing is I feel comfortable and that my pants aren’t falling down (yeah, happened more then once)

  3. jaclyn@todayslady says

    Yay for the date!!!

I never wear make up working out…… it just doesnt feel right! I do sometimes match my outfits though. Looking well put together in my workout wear makes the workout even more enjoyable!

  4. Ann Claire says

Congrats on your date! Have fun!
As far as matching when working out I just try not to completely clash. For example I usually won’t wear red shorts and a pink shirt or something like that but that’s about the extent of my workout clothes matching. I would totally wear a pink shirt and green shorts!

  5. Daniel says

It doesn’t matter to me one bit what I wear to the gym – if people are going to judge me while I’m working out by the clothes that I wear, then let them! I went there to work up a sweat and get those endorphins running, not to look fancy! 🙂

  6. Ilana says

yay for a date with a cute boy!!!
i’m not gonna lie, I put on eyeliner before I go to the gym or to Pilates. I have to get on a bus and a subway just to get there and I don’t need to expose my zombie-like un-eyelinered face to the public, especially when I usually see people I know haha. but as far as matching, beh, who cares?

  7. Anonymous says

Nike tramp? Ha, more like Nike Model! You are absolutely stunning. They should hire you, Katie. Or at least the sporting goods store should. Then you could work with your guy! 🙂

  8. Katrina says

I match, but makeup? HA! Never. Unless I’m doing a race. Then maybe sometimes. 🙂 Honestly, when I do wear makeup when I run, it pretty much just becomes a sweaty mess on my face. 🙂

  9. britchickruns says

Awh congrats on the date! I am insanely jealous 😛 of the boy AND your running outfit!
I never match my workout clothes…actually, I do now – I bought my first ‘proper’ running clothes 2days ago, and I’m in love! I wear them all the time :p

  10. Saraishealthy says

That bra is so cute! I love the polka dots :). You’re beautiful, Katie! And I’m so excited to read more about the date!!!

  11. kelsey@snackingsquirrel.com says

THIS IS SO EXCITING! haha yea he might have been a little wary of ur “intentions” if you wore the heels into the store 😉

I’m trying to think of a good name for him but im kind of stumped which is rare! Hmm it’ll come to me sometime…

I’m positive that if you guys hit it off and hang out more he’ll end up eating more of your food once he gets a taste of how delicious clean eating is (not to mention you’ll reel him in with ur fudge babies) !!

and i love how ironically the sports bra matched! i bought a pair of bikini bottoms the other day and thought “wow this will totally match my bikini top” but when i went home it was totally off haha.. fail.. oh well.

    xoxo <3

  12. christina says

aww katie that is so awesome!! i love that he has already asked you out!! i FINALLY met a boy at the gym that i’ve been eyeing forever and he just asked me out too! we’re lucky girls this week! i’m excited for you and you must tell us how it goes 🙂 🙂 good luck!!! plan a cute outfit!

  13. Amanda says

I just started reading your blog yesterday and I love it! Nice to know there’s someone out there who loves running, delicious healthy food, and animals! I’ll definitely be following this post. I became vegan last Easter and have felt amazing since making the change, and it’s definitely helped my running 🙂

  14. Carbzilla says

    Whoohooo! Date! Date! Date!

I never match hardly ever and that includes at the gym (wait, where’s my gym again?). I’ll be wearing either rolled out of bed make-up or end of day make-up. Those are the options.

    have fun 🙂

  15. Run Sarah says

Have fun on your date – I love stir fry restaurants, so good! I never match on my runs – I often purposely choose bright coloured/mismatched top & shorts on outdoor runs to be more visible.

  16. Melissa says

Hooray for your date! Go Katie, go!

One semi-off topic discussion re: running gear, and I’m not trying to sound like a judgmental arse, but I’m really surprised to see you supporting Nike with all their human rights violations and such. I, personally, really try to avoid sweatshop stuff as much as I can – companies like Nike, Adias, etc being the really well-known, major ones. I know it’s SO HARD with athletic gear (*fist shake*) and that’s terribly frustrating. It’s basically impossible to find a company that’s totally in the clear. I tend to buy only New Balance shoes and then only the ones made in their American plants – but even doing that is no guarantee the materials were produced ethically. Sigh.

I’ve been trying to buy all my running stuff at consignment stores (there are SO MANY items with tags still on them! Nice stuff!!) and then I feel better, since I’m not putting money in the unethical company’s pockets directly or anything. Still, I buy sports bras new and Champion, which my three bras are, is not great either. PLUS the whole Target gay-rights fiasco right now means I wouldn’t shop there anyway. My running socks need to be new, too, and while I picked New Balance, I’m not sure they were the best choice. I need to look into Fitsocks and see if they are ethical. Sheesh.

I swear, Katie, sometimes being an ethical consumer is just exhausting.
It started with veganism and just sorta snowballed. I do my best with human rights stuff but I know I totally fail a lot. It’s just so hard! So please, don’t take my “Nike, huh?” comment as me being better than thou, ’cause I’m not doing so hot avoiding all unethical labor myself. :/ I’m just curious what your thoughts are on it! 🙂

    • Jennifer - jcd says

Ugh, frustrating! If anyone here sees One Tooth brand athletic wear at your local shops, it is produced in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada! They make good quality stuff too. I am so happy they opened a store in my wee town. Mountain Equipment Co-op has a lot of clothes made in Canada too, and some made from recycled materials – bonus.

      • Melissa says

        Thanks for the brand recommendation!
I’ll be on the lookout, for sure. It IS frustrating!
The nature of the sport means you need some specialized gear – but it’s all made by big corporations that are less than stellar, usually.

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

It IS exhausting, keeping up with trying to be “ethical” all the time… honestly, I REALLY thought I’d read, a few years ago, that Nike drastically improved its labor laws and changed where it was purchasing products from… now I feel… naive? I KNOW that Adidas has had a lot of human rights’ violations (as well as a parent company–for their perfume–that tests on animals, I think), and I’ve been avoiding them for years.
So my thoughts? I have no idea! (But at least you can rest assured that I probably won’t be buying many running outfits in the near future… I already have too many lol!)

  17. Michal says

awww katie thats so cute! At the gym I have to wear make up. Not a lot, just some eyeliner and mascara. And I always have the cute little matching outfits haha.

  18. Kady @ Livin, Lovin, Learnin says

Yay congrats on the date! So exciting!
I usually don’t match when I run and since I’m in the middle of an 8-year college career, I don’t buy real workout gear either – I wear shorts I’ve had for years and years and old t-shirts from races and school and stuff. Hey, it works! Your new outfit is super cute and you’re kind of convincing me to buy some fun workout gear, and maybe I’ll meet a hottie of my own hehe 🙂

  19. Molly says

I have this little thing about matching running clothes… I generally wear t-shirts and shorts but as long as they match I’m good! I run really early in the morning with my teammates so as far as makeup goes… that can wait until post-shower! So happy for you that you scored a cutie at the sporting goods store… atta girl!

  20. Faith says

Eee, how exciting!!! Have a BLAST on your date!

Most days I work out after I get off work, so I do have makeup on. On weekends though, I don’t put on any makeup before heading out for a run. I like to wear cute, semi-matching outfits, but only because I feel more sporty and motivated when I know I look good in something other than a schlumpy oversized tee!

  21. Kelly Michelle says

OMG for a second I really thought that was what you wore. There was a girl in my classes that would always come to class in literally gym clothes (skankier ones though, with lots of skin popping out) and high heeled flip flops, she looked ridiculous, especially sitting in accounting classes. If she wanted to dress up its one thing, or to just wear gym clothes but the combination just didn’t work.

I see nothing wrong with the date! Have fun. I recently went out with a boy tht was just here visiting for a week and had a blast and have had my share of vacation dates in the past too. It always makes for a good time or at least an interesting story!

  22. Justine says

Yupie for the date! Good point in just enjoying each other while you can. I would have never thought of that, to be honest. 🙂

The only make up I wear is mascara (if I can remember to put it on!) but I would never put some on just to go to the gym or jogging. For some reason, mascara always smudges on me, even if I’m not doing anything. I have even tried with water-proof and it makes no difference. It’s no big though.

Cute running get-up! I think it is time for me to hit the running store for some new clothes.

  23. Brandi says

Have fun on your date Katie! And yes, I always match my workout stuff. Of course, it’s mostly all black, so it’s not too hard. 🙂

  24. thedelicateplace says

hahahaha! i laughed so hard at the high heels with running shorts. i love the outfit btw good luck on your date 😉

  25. ruby red says

Hehehe, yay!!!! I was so excited about this post! Three cheers for meeting a guy on vacation, and for the fact that he actually had the guts to ask you out, when he knew you wouldn’t be around too long! So many boys are just big babies… All your new purchases are sooo cute, as is your sports bra! I can’t wait for the next segment of this adventure. =D

I definitely grunge it up at the gym, and I am just realizing that I really need some new, cuter sportswear. The tops of my gym shirts are all really high-cut, up to my neck…it’s time I start dressing like a girl there.

But I am like you, I grab the first gym shirt and pair of shorts I see without regards to color. A lot of my real-life dressing is like that too – the “best dressed” voted girl my senior year of high school had a great motto that I still remember, “Everything matches!” As long as both pieces are cute, I go for it!

  26. Bianca- Vegan Crunk says

Yea!!! So glad you scored a date with Sports Store Hottie! And love the new running outfit. I could really use some new gym clothes. As for makeup at the gym, I usually do wear it because I work out after work and its already on. But when I do go on weekend mornings before my shower, I don’t wear makeup.

  27. Megan @ Healthy Hoggin says

Cute new outfit! Hope you have fun on your date!! 😀

I really don’t try to match my outfits too much when I go to the gym– I don’t like spending money on workout-wear too often, so I usually wear cheap tank tops from Old Navy with a pair of colorful shorts! I do try to make sure my sports bra doesn’t clash, I guess… but that’s about the extent of it!

Maybe someday I’ll put more effort into my gym look, though– I have a cycling teacher with matching SHOES for all of her outfits! She looks so darn cute, it almost makes me want to try a little harder! 😉

  28. Kiersten says

I couldn’t care less what I look like when I work out. I’m usually a total mess when I work out. I find it silly to wear makeup and do your hair to go get all sweaty! I hope you have fun on your date! Personally, I like Sports Store Hottie for his blog name.

  29. Emily says

Awww, cute story! And at least you know you have something in common after finding him at a sports store (much better than a bar in my opinion). 🙂

I love those Nike tops, too…so comfortable for running!

    When I work out, I look like I’m exercising…no fancy hair-dos or matchy-matchy outfits.

  30. Gummy Bear says

Have fun on your date! Honestly, I don’t really care what I wear when I work out, haha. I don’t really understand why people want to be ‘pretty looking’ when they work out cause all you’re going to do is get all sweaty and gross, lol. I like the clothes you got!
    <3 Emily

  31. Katharina says

You are so adorable and have such a sweet heart, Katie! I’m so glad that things are working out with this guy 🙂 It’s so cool to see someone our age that actually cares about those things, and that you two have some things in common. Also, that you have some things that you like to share with him that he may not know :p

I usually mix-and-match my outfits too lol. But not too long ago I got these super cute sports bras (this awesome one that I’m going to include a link to–I think you’d like it), and when I wear those I feel cute and it’s not hard to match with them.. just throw on some black bottoms 🙂 My mom gets annoying sometimes though about how I don’t wear makeup to the gym and that I look so young blah blah. Ughhh whatever. Plus it’s not good to sweat and have makeup on.

Anyway, here’s the link for the sports bra: http://www.calvinklein.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4070895
but I got it in blue, and check out the back! That’s what makes it so cool 😀

    XOXO beautiful!!!

    http://www.ohonemorething.wordpress.com

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Ohmigosh, lol our moms are so similar! Mine has been dragging me around to sports stores this summer trying to get me to find matching tops for all the shorts I own. I’m like, “Ma, who cares if I match? I’m going to get all sweaty and ugly!” Hehehehe oh moms!

  32. Katie says

Yay!! I’m so excited for your date!!!! I can’t wait to hear all about it.

Also, I look ridiculous when I run/work out. I wear whatever the heck I see first in the wee early morning hours. Plus I see approximately 1 person when I go running outside – so it would just be silly to spend money on matching outfits. Black spandex and an old ratty t-shirt are pretty standard…

  33. fitnessandsunshine says

I almost never match my outfit at the gym. If it ends up matchy, great, but I don’t usually plan on it. I’m gonna be sweating my booty off, what’s lookin’ pretty for? 😉

    Have fun on the date!

    • kelli says

Oh and usually I don’t care what I look like going to the gym, but for some reason going to yoga, I like to look good ahaha. I never wear make-up only tinted moisturizer, once in awhile blush.

  34. mysweetseason says

Aww that’s so cute, have fun on your date!

I don’t match haha I figure I’m gonna be sweating a buttload and looking a mess anyway 😀

P.S. I loooooved the fudge babies I made yesterday 🙂

  35. melindard says

Have a great date with this boy. If I wore make up to the gym and did my usual workout, I would look like a clown whose face was rubbed on the ground. The gym has minimal air flow and the island has more humidity than anyone in the states could ever imagine.

  36. Jessica @ Fit & Clean says

I have to match my gym clothes, because I go to a gym. However, most of my shorts are black or blue, so I just have to pull out a workout top…they all match the shorts. It makes it easy!! No makeup, but some eyeliner and mascara so I don’t look like I just rolled out of bed (like the way I go to the bus stop with the kids in the morning, LOL)!

  37. BroccoliHut says

SO exciting! Please tell us all about the date afterward;)
Like you, I don’t really care much about how I look at the gym–T-shirts with any old shorts (it doesn’t seem to matter much–after all, I caught Seth’s eye, right?). When I run outside, I usually wear cute sports tops–but I NEVER wear make-up to work out. Kind of a pet peeve of mine.

  38. Mary @ Bites and Bliss says

Ahhh congrats on the hot date!! and your picture reminds me of Meet Virginia’s lyrics- “She never compromises, Loves babies and suprises, wears high heels when she exercises ain’t that beautiful?”

    Yep, very beautiful! 🙂

  39. Vanilla says

Hihi, how about you make him Protein Brownies??!! He would loooove it!! Men like chocolate and Athletic men like protein…so why not???

He can’t resist you in this outfit!! Soooo cute! Do you know you have very pretty legs?? That’s a blessing, you know 🙂

We definately should get a name for this Boy. How about, herm…Snickers, HotPie (cuz he’s hot…hot-pie, get it?? haha…), Cutie Pie, Nike Cookie (because I heard you should pronounce Nike like ”Nikee”…?)
No?? Ok, maybe others have better suggestions…haha

And I’m a mess when I go do my jogging. No make-up, just my Ipod, my sweat and I. :p

    xoxo

  40. QueenofFitness says

Katie, just like Amanda i managed to stumble upon your blog last night and actually stayed up until 3 in the morning reading all of your past posts and laughing my tookis off! your recipes – love them all and the simplicity. i have two questions for you…not sure if there are too personal but what are you majoring in college and what is the reason that your family has moved so much (military fam?)? if you can’t answer them, that’s okay, i was just intrigued.
to answer your question…when i work out at home or go to the Y supa-dupa early i do NOT match. i will wear pink with pea green or maroon. however, when i go to zumba i dress to impress. i wear super snappy outfits even though i do sweat as much as three men. i typically wear tech clothing from lululemon or zumbawear. & makeup…fuggedaboutit. this chick can’t wait to get home from work to get the stuff off my face.

      • QueenofFitness says

how awesome! sounds like you’ve had some incredible experiences. there was a girl in my aerobics class last week who is in a similar situation. her husband does some kind of international business relations and sets up offices all over the world. he is currently in london so she will be leaving to join him in a few weeks. she said they move every 2 or 3 years. no wonder you are so wordly! you come across much more mature that most girls i know your age.

        • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Aw, thank you! I think the experience definitely does make one more worldly… I’m never at a loss for things to talk about!
It can be tough, moving every few years, though. My dad *tried* to ensure that he moved us less as we got older. But lol his plan to stay put backfired, as we then went on to live in China and The Philippines!

  41. vegebon says

Wow ! You look SO BEAUTIFUL in this turquoise-blue outfit and silver shoes !! (I mean, even more than usual)

    Enjoy your date :-).

I love your blog, thank you sooo much for posting every day !

  42. Sarah (GF vegan) says

I’m SO excited about your date! Hope it goes well. I’m sure you’ll dazzle him with your loveliness and prettiness. xxxx

Oh, and loving the new running gear and matching sports bra. x

  43. Danielle (Runs on Green) says

Ahh I got so excited when I read you were going on a date! I totally agree-why not enjoy the company?? I’m not coming up with any better names…Sexy Sports Store Salesman? hah tooo long

I love the new running outfit! I like to somewhat match my clothes (no purple shorts with orange shirt) but as far as make-up goes…I’d rather not be wearing it! Sweaty racoon eyes aren’t pretty…

  44. Anne @ Food Loving Polar Bear says

    You’re so cute!

I usually never wear matching clothes / gear while working out, I really don’t care how I look when I’m sweating 😀

Can’t wait to hear all about your date, I would have done the same thing and enjoyed life and a date with a cute guy 🙂

  45. Ems says

Just enjoy being yourself and being in a lovely male company! dont be over analytical.
Boys/men/males will be different to your own thoughts BUT appreciate you for YOU. enjoy!

  46. JoLynn-dreaminitvegan says

Katie, you always make me laugh. You are too cute.
The days of the cute guys and dating. So long ago…….
Okay next, I hope you have a fun date. Also, cute workout outfit and no makeup for me while working out, I think it’s pretty silly to do that. Work out clothes that match, well, colors have to go somewhat well together.

  47. A says

    Hi Katie!

I accidentally left my last comment anonymously, although I got lucky and signed it with my name anyways. Just wanted to pop in again, and let you know how fun your blog is, and how much I enjoy reading!
AHHHH I am so excited to hear about the date!!! You know you will have to show us all pictures of him, right? Just kidding 😉
I definitely do not wear make up when I run, but I do find it fun to wear matching gear and/or bright colors. It keeps me motivated and excited in the last stretch!

    Lexi

  48. Sherri says

    Love the outfit!
I don’t match mine, I run on the treadmill inside so no one see’s me anyway.
Have a great time on your date!

    Sherri

  49. Katelyn says

I used to care so much about how I looked at the gym, field hockey practice, outside running…but now I don’t care at all! I’ve even let some of my guy friends see me sans makeup 🙂 Now that summer’s here, I just never really wear makeup unless I’m going out with the girls, to a party, out to dinner.

Matching? No way! I mean, sometimes I like to have my pale pink with my pale blue for a little Easter-Eggy look 🙂 but let’s be serious, if it’s close by, I’ll grab it and put it on!

Have fun on your datedate and give us the whole scoopsky. All vegan runner girls should be able to find a guy who is a runner, loves his protein, AND is open-minded about a “clean” diet! You are TOO lucky 🙂

  50. monicamuses says

Omg, what a snazzy new outfit! I love getting new running gear, because it rarely happens haha. I’m always out in a ratty t-shirt and gym shorts, so whenever I step up my game and get a new tank I feel like a million bucks 🙂

(sidenote: I used to have a crush on a guy that worked at my running store. He moved to Colorado and I’m pretty sure he didn’t know my name, but that’s totally irrelevant. He was adorable and a marathoner! So, I totally respect yo’ decision, a gal’s gotta have some fun!)

  51. C @ Slide into Hippiedom says

I totally dress ridiculously when I run. If I match, I’m lucky. I ran in a 10K and my dad made the comment that I looked like I was running in my pjs. I care most about being comfortable while running, since I’m going to be a sweaty mess anyway. I also have all these shirts that I no longer wear normally, so I turn them into “running” clothes. 🙂

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

I think there is a marathon where you’re SUPPOSED to run in your pjs!
I’d love to do one of those costumed races one day.
…Just as long as I don’t get passed by a guy in a giant tutu with fairy wings ;).

  52. bumbee hankypants says

oh, it was funny. I was a vegetarian when I met my boyfriend and on one of our first dates he ordered a giant kebab with only meat in it. then he offered my a bite and i was like: “Oh, I’m a vegetarian” and he was so sorry and didn’t kiss me afterwards. So cute!
    Now, he’s a part-time veggie 😉

  53. LifeLover says

Hi Katie! I adore your blog!
I really would like to thank you (a hundred times!) for sharing such amazing recipes with us, who like food, but prefer to eat healthy 🙂
I was wondering whether you actually do like the taste of meat and what concerns you is animal suffering, in which case, I wonder what you think of kosher meat?

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Thanks! I honestly don’t miss meat at all anymore. For the first few months, it was a struggle… but now I guess my tastes have changed and I can’t even stand the smell.

      I also was never a huge meat-eater… I was always a carb-o-holic ;).
