Overnight oats in a jar
Any small container works here. I bought these adorable Le Parfait Overnight Jars specifically for this recipe – and now I’m obsessed and use the jars all the time for everything!
To make the recipe, simply add 1/2 cup oats and a pinch of salt to a mason jar or tupperware container. Stir in everything else, put the lid on the jar and shake well, then refrigerate overnight. The next day, just stir and enjoy.
Do you eat them hot or cold?
They are delicious either way! Just make sure to prepare the oats in a heat-safe container if you plan to microwave or warm them in the oven the next morning.
You could also transfer the prepared oats to a small saucepan and heat them up that way. If using yogurt, it’s best to not cook them; and especially in the warmer months, I like to eat them cold.
If you prefer to bake your oatmeal in the oven instead of eating it cold or cooking on the stovetop or microwave, try this recipe for Baked Oats.
Are they good for meal prep?
Stored covered in an airtight container in the fridge, the overnight oatmeal will last about five days, so it’s great to meal prep in advance for the week. You can also portion out extra servings of the dry ingredients into ziploc bags for your own homemade instant oatmeal packets like Quaker.
The original version has 6 Weight Watchers SmartPoints. Overnight oats are the perfect healthy solution if you’re one of those people who like to have breakfast as soon as they get up in the morning.
Can you make overnight steel cut oats?
You can! The results will have a chewy texture that some might even prefer to a version made with quick or rolled oats. They’re less chewy if you make them more than a day in advance.
Can you make vegan overnight oats?
Yes, they make a great vegan breakfast. Feel free to try out different plant-based milks in the recipe – almond milk, coconut milk, ricemilk, cashewmilk, soy milk, or even oat milk – to find your favorites.
Technically, you could use water instead of milk, but the results will be much less creamy. Most regular grocery stores will sell at least one brand of nondairy yogurt, and some even have vegan Greek yogurt.
Or you can skip the yogurt and just add more milk in its place. The recipe is suitable for many gluten free diets as well and is super versatile!
Overnight oatmeal flavors
- Peanut Butter Overnight Oats: Add 2 tbsp peanut butter to the recipe. Throw in a handful of mini chocolate chips if desired.
- Chocolate Chip Cookie: Use vanilla yogurt or add 1/8 tsp pure vanilla extract. Stir in 3-4 tsp chocolate chips, optional crushed walnuts, and a dash of cinnamon.
- Nutella: Use your favorite brand of chocolate hazelnut spread or my Homemade Nutella recipe as the nut butter. Add 1 tbsp regular and 1/2 tbsp dutch or additional regular cocoa powder. Top with toasted hazelnuts if you want.
- Blueberry Overnight Oats: Use fresh or frozen blueberries as the fruit. You can also use blueberry yogurt if you wish.
- Monkey Oats: Substitute mashed banana for the yogurt. Add 1-2 tbsp peanut butter and a handful of mini chocolate chips. Or top your oatmeal with Banana Ice Cream.
- Banana Bread: Add 1/4 tsp cinnamon and 1-2 tbsp crushed walnuts or pecans with the dry ingredients. Use sliced banana as your fruit of choice.
- Cinnamon Apple: Add 1/4 tsp cinnamon or apple pie spice. Use diced apple as your fruit of choice, and add 1-2 tbsp raisins and some crushed walnuts if desired.
- Mint Chocolate Chip: Add 1/8 to 1/4 tsp pure peppermint extract, depending on desired strength. Stir in 2-4 tsp mini chocolate chips. If you wish, you can also add a little spirulina powder for color and added nutrition.
Of course there’s also a chocolate version – just use this recipe for Chocolate Overnight Oats.
- High Protein Overnight Oats: Stir 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder into the base recipe. Add extra milk if needed.
- Pumpkin Pie: Substitute canned pumpkin for the yogurt. Add 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon and a few drops of pure vanilla extract.
- Carrot Cake: Add 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 2-3 tbsp shredded carrot, and optional 1 tbsp almond or coconut butter. You can also stir in a handful of raisins, shredded coconut, or chopped walnuts.
- Piña Colada: Use coconut yogurt and coconut milk. Add a few drops pure vanilla extract, and use diced pineapple as your fruit of choice (or skip the pineapple for plain coconut oatmeal).
- Creamy Coffee: Add 1 tsp instant coffee to the recipe. For an even creamier result, substitute nondairy creamer for half the milk of choice. You can also add 1/8 tsp pure vanilla extract if desired. (Use up leftover instant coffee in this Frappuccino Recipe.)
- Strawberry Shortcake: Use strawberry yogurt, and replace the milk of choice with either canned coconut milk or nondairy creamer. Use strawberries as your fruit of choice, and stir in some strawberry jam at the end if desired. The same idea can be applied to raspberries, blackberries, peaches, or cherries.

These look awesome! I’ve actually never made overnight oats, but I love these flavor combos.
So with you on brunch! On Christmas my family has a big brunch, and it’s delicious (one of my top 5 favorite meals every year), but I can’t for the life of me understand how they make it through present-opening, etc. before eating! I can work out before breakfast, but that’s about it. Any idle time and I realize how hungry I am. Naturally, I eat breakfast AND brunch on Christmas 😀
Sarah says
Yes!!! I am with both of you. Brunch is always lunch for me, even if it’s at 11 am. I’ve never tried overnight oats. Somehow I’ve always thought of it as intimidating, but this post makes it look anything but!
Ann says
So funny, I’m actually the opposite and have had to make a real effort to eat breakfast in the morning because I know you’re supposed to eat breakfast, but I’m just never hungry when I wake up. I do love breakfast food though. And I like the step by step process photos. Would love to see you do more posts including them.
Jack says
Look up intermittent fasting. If you’re not hungry in the morning, just don’t eat! You don’t actually need to!
Olivia says
Actually you do! Eating breakfast gets your metabolism going! You’ve been fasting all night and if you don’t eat in the morning, the body will store those calories into fat.!
Firefly says
This is called “starvation mode” and it has beed debunked. You can’t create extra energy out of thin air. I lost 30lbs and kept them off by doing intermitrent fasting & skipping breakfast and lunch because i truly wasn’t hungry in the mornings. The idea that you store any food as fat if you don’t eat for a bit longer is more than ridiculous. Weight gain and fat storage occurs at a calorie surplus and if you eat less than you need, you can’t gain weight.
But you have to be honest about it too. You can’t say you’re fasting and then gulp down 4 Starbucks coffees.
Vivian’ says
My husband at one time skipped breakfast and lunch often and would eat a big dinner. After being diagnosed with diabetes, we discovered diabetes is often linked to individuals who skip meals. His endocrinologist has told us not eating, especially carbs, puts your liver into “starvation “ mode and causes it to react in an unhealthy way. Just FYI
Jamie says
Agreed! You don’t need to!
Karis says
My dad’s diabetes is helped by not eating breakfast. What it all comes down to is that every body is different. That’s why we have so many different diets that all have their fanatics – people who claim it is absolutely the best diet – and their vehement opposers. Not only is every body different, but every body is different at different times of their lives. Our bodies change as we age, and what worked amazingly at one time may stop working. Pay attention, and get occasional blood tests if that makes you feel better.
Diana says
Love the photos! My kids can’t get enough of your breakfast oatmeal cupcakes. As soon as we finish this next batch, I will have to try this recipe on them.
Toshi Bakes says
Overnight oats are so convenient for students like me xD They’re easy to make and they can make a great breakfast. Thanks for these variations!
Tiffany says
Hi Katie!
Do you know of a vegan yogurt you can recommend? Since whole soy went out of business I haven’t had much success in finding an alternative that I like as most taste very sweet or artificial. So far I’ve tried Kite Hill, Nancy’s, coconut grove, so delicious ( almond and coconut) and o’soy. Thank you so much!!
Chocolate Covered Katie says
Also sad about Wholesoy. Best alternative so far (and still not the same) has been Coconut Dream Nondairy.
Clare K. R. Miller says
Have you tried the new So Delicious unsweetened coconut milk yogurt? I find that the vanilla has a bit of an odd aftertaste but the plain is excellent. I’ve just been eating it with fruit, but I’m looking forward to trying it in smoothies and overnight oats!
SFerd says
Personally, I like the Silk Soy Non-Dairy Plain. I add a bit of vanilla extract to it.
I find it at grocery stores, Sprouts, and Natural Grocers (best price). It’s only available in a larger container. Here’s what it looks like:
https://silk.com/plant-based-products/dairy-free-yogurt-alternatives/plain-soy-dairy-free-yogurt-alternative
I find most non-dairy yogurts too sweet or too high fat. And, many don’t have much protein.
Ivan says
Best non-dairy yogurt by far is Harmless Harvest from Whole Foods. No thickeners or aftertaste. Great with overnight oats!
Donna Smith says
We like Harmless Harvest.
Trang Do says

Anna says
This is perfect! I just tried my first overnight oats a couple days ago (a peanut butter version yum) and loved them and was looking for new variations. These flavors look incredible! Oh and you are definitely not the only one who is thinking of breakfast when they go to bed! I must do that every night lol
Lucie says
Haha 😀 I totally do that! Good to know I’m not the only dreaming of breakfast. Sometimes I manage to squeeze some yoga in before devouring some oatmeal or whatnot but that’s pretty rare. And I always eat at least a piece of chocolate or a spoonful of peanut butter before the workout anyway 🙂
Stacey says
I was invited to an early yoga class once and woke up late so I had to skip breakfast. Maybe my energy was lagging from that, because I ended up falling asleep at the last pose! Luckily no one noticed!
Jackie says
So timely! I ran out of steel cut oats this morning and I was wondering what to make for breakfast for the rest of the week. I do have rolled oats and yogurt! And blueberries! This will be awesome. Thank you!
And I am right there with you about breakfast. I need to eat something in the morning. I guess if I ate a huge dinner, or if I snacked, it wouldn’t matter so much. But I stick with 3 meals per day and I do look forward to each one!
Stacey says
I saw this recipe yesterday and made it right away with the banana bread version, and now I am eating it this morning and it is delicious! I think you will approve of my decision to add chocolate chips 🙂 🙂 🙂
MaryAnn says
Don’t the bananas turn brown sitting in that overnite? That is why I’ve been hesitating trying a version with bananas……thanks!
Hol says
“brown” isn’t bad, just a reaction with oxygen. If you put the banana in the night before it will be submerged in your milk and covered, or you could just put it in in the morning. Easy fix for those kids who won’t eat something if it isn’t perfect looking!
Emily says
Thank you for sharing – I definitely needed this. My work day starts at 7 am, so when I get up at 5 am, I’m not yet awake enough to be hungry. So I like being able to take something to my office that I can eat at my desk that’s still healthy – not always an easy task. This fits the bill, though! http://www.enchantinglyemily.com

I love this recipe! Been making it for a couple of winters. So worth it!

Overnight oats is actually the only way I like to enjoy coconut yogurt XD more excuses to have it then!
Celeste @The Whole Serving says
Oatmeal has been my go-to breakfast of late. These look delicious.
Heidi Kokborg says
I love overnight oats! It’s one of my favourite breakfasts. & I am with you on the whole breakfast thing. I just don’t understand how some people can go without breakfast. Like you I need it my breakfast before I can do any work or get moving 🙂
Hannah says
Yay thank you for sharing this with us! I love overnight oats. Its so nice to already have your breakfast made when you wake up.
Also, I saw the clip of you on the Dr. Oz show! You looked absolutely beautiful and really comfortable. Up next : CCK cooking show?! :))
Kayla S says
Hey 🙂 While I love the idea of the yogurt in this recipe, I don’t usually have it in the house and I’m wondering what you think could be a good replacement for it in this recipe… fruit puree (like banana) maybe?
Kylie says
I am not a fan of yogurt, and I leave it out and use extra milk! 1/4-1/2 c more, depending on your preference.
Tanya says
Thanks for the suggestion! I had the same question…vegan yogurt is not very available for me.
Karis says
Coconut milk is creamier than regular milk and sweetens without sugar. It certainly has more calories, but if that’s not a problem, I would recommend it. Collagen is another good addition and adds creaminess as well as protein.
Ana @ Ana's Rocket Ship says
Wow these all just look so super yummy!!! It’s nice to see a variation without chia seeds because they can be so expensive!
Emily says
Thank you for posting these! I have been making overnight oats for the past couple months from a recipe I clipped from a newspaper article and have been trying to think of new combinations to put in it. These are perfect! Overnight oats are so easy to just grab out of the fridge and eat right when I get to work, no prep or thinking involved in the morning rush to get ready. 🙂
Nina says
So delicious. I made the banana bread. Easy and great to wake up and have a wonderful start to my day.
Noora Turunen says
I can’t wait for summer so that I will be able to try that raspberry oatmeal with fresh Finnish raspberries! Or blueberries. Or strawberries…
Hannah says
Thank you so much for your positive attitude towards food! I used to be extremely obsessive about what I ate. Although I ate plenty, it was constantly on my mind and that kind of attitude is so unhealthy and hurtful. Now I’m free from that, and thoroughly enjoy my food! I don’t think guilt should ever have anything to do with what you eat. I’m always so happy to see blogs like yours!
Candi says
Do you refrigerate it overnight or leave it out on the counter?
Chocolate Covered Katie says
Fridge 🙂
Laney says
You should really add that to the article. I was leaving it out on the counter and my roommate argued it should sit in the fridge. Had she not said anything I would have left it out! I specifically checked to see if you mentioned refrigeration or not, so I defaulted to countertop when it wasn’t mentioned.
Some people may get sick, it’d be better to state it.
Alanna says
No offense, but why would you think it’s okay to leave dairy products out at room temperature overnight? 😮 The only dairy that’s okay at room temp is the stuff that is purchased in a shelf-stable form (like some of Blue Diamond’s almond milks), and even that goes in the fridge after opening. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a yogurt that’s okay out of the fridge.
Ander says
I have often left mine on the counter since I prefer eating them at room temperature.
Vegan milk isn’t the same as dairy milk, there isn’t the same safety risks. And my milk has never gone bad during one evening on the counter.
There are even recipes to ferment your oatmeal, I have a friend who does it.
Alison says
Love the idea for overnight oats, it looks super easy. The flavor combos also looks really good and different.
Unofficial CCK Helper says
Definitely you can!
Jenna says
Hey, can I use banana, or will it be too mushy and weird?
Dani K. says
Yes, it basically moistens the oats, which is much better than raw oats. It doesn’t cook them exactly, but definitely improves them! 🙂
Kiera says
I made this last night and am eating it cold this morning. It’s very tasty but I’m not sure how I feel about cold oats, can this be heated, or is it meant to be eaten cold?
Unofficial CCK Helper says
Can definitely heat it up!
Debbie says
What size mason jar do you use? I love overnight oats, especially in the warmer weather. So refreshing! I usually use a Tupperware container, but the jars make a pretty presentation and could be used for a brunch!
Traci says
Question: do you refrigerate overnight or let it sit on counter?
This looks yummy and easy. Great for quick breakfast for my hubby although I would probably have to double the portion for him 🙂
Alanna says
Refrigerate!! Dairy is not safe to leave at room temperature (unless it’s an unopened shelf-stable product like some almond milks and coconut milk).
Beth says
I love overnight oats! Unfortunately, I’m having trouble reading this entry–every time I take my hand off the mouse the page skips down to the video ad above. 🙁
Chocolate Covered Katie says
Hi, this is terrible to hear. I’m not able to replicate the issue and haven’t heard it from anyone else yet but would obviously love to help troubleshoot, as I don’t want that happening to anyone! What browser are you using? Does it happen on mobile as well? Thanks for any info you can give me!
Staci says
These are so easy and delicious! I made up a strawberry version last night and it taste so similar to the strawberry pie that my mom makes. I used So Delicious Vanilla yogurt, sliced strawberries, cashew-almond milk, and about 1 TBS of honey.
kathleen says
Do you add yogurt to your banana bread flavor? And if so, what flavor yogurt? Thanks!
Unofficial CCK Helper says
You can add any flavor, such as plain or vanilla or even banana if there is such a thing!
Krystal says
Do these stay good for several days in the fridge if I were to make 2 or 3 days worth at a time? Or are they only good if you make each one the night before?
Unofficial CCK Helper says
They are good for several days!
Luisa says
This is great, thanks for sharing!
Evy says
I noticed your recipe is high in fats. Is this because of the yogurt you use to make it with?
I will still be trying it, the first variation looks delicious!

What size mason jar is good for this? Can you recommend which ones to buy?
Unofficial CCK Helper says
Pint sized is good!
G says
Pint sized is not big enough! The ingredients did not fit. Can you recommend another size? Not sure how you got all of those ingredients to fit inside that jar..
Camy says
These look so yummy. Can I use Greek yogurt or would it be to thick?
Unofficial CCK Helper says
Yes you can!
Amy says
Is there a shelf life?
Would I be able to make 5 at once and they be ok to last all week instead of making 1 every night?
Chocolate Covered Katie says
I’d recommend doing maybe 3 or 4 at once. Not sure how it would taste after 5 days, but 4 should be fine!
Aneeka says
I don’t always have yogurt. Could I substitute extra milk instead?
Eileen Sweeney says
Hi Katie! I’m going to try your overnight oatmeal. I’m not wild about oatmeal, but I’m willing to try something new! I also can’t imagine eating it cold. Wish me luck!
Renee says
Hi Katie, I’m just like you – i have to have my breakfast regardless….yes, I do plan what’s for breakfast before I go to bed. My kids have been brought up to “MUST” have their breakfast, even though many of their peers don’t.
Thanks for this overnight oatmeal recipe. Totally love it.
Pat says
These look great and will never such a timesaver in the morning with my twins! Will they last a few nights? Was thinking of making up enough for a few mornings. Thanks

I hadn’t known about overnight oats until you put these recipes here. I love them! Would on other rolled grain cereal work as well (like Bob’s red mill 5 grain rolled hot cereal)? Thanks!

Probably, but try it and see. If you do, be sure to report back to let us all know how it worked out.

Hi,
I’m not exactly into breakfast first thing in the morning but am carry to work type so these packed to go overnight oats are just made for me ! 🙂
Kylie Ferguson says
This was a great way to use some yogurt that was too sweet to eat plain! I think regular oatmeal will always have a higher place in my heart though, since it’s warm. Can overnight oats be microwaved without ruining the taste?
I will definitely still use overnight oats for early morning road trips though!
Julie Dove says
Yes!

Can I use kefir for the yogurt???

Carolyn says
I like the idea of this, but I am allergic to oatmeal, can we substitute another grain for the oats?
Julie Dove says
You can definitely experiment! be sure to report back if you do!
Angela says
Made this the other day & it was delicious 🙂 made it with rolling oats, strawberries, Greek yogurt, almond milk and put a pinch of cinnamon & honey in it. Such a great way to have oatmeal during the week when your working.
Anna says
This such a great idea! I was wondering if I were to make a few of them, how long do you think they will stay good for? Or are these meant to be eaten only the next day?

Does anyone else like their oatmeal hot? I have tried this overnight oatmeal but just cant get it down cold and when i heat it up in the microwave, it gets very pasty. Any suggestions?
Mary says
i just made it!!!
can’t wait to try it in the morning!!!!
Darlene says
Would it taste as good or better it I heated it? I don’t like cold oatmeal.
Jason Sanford says
Either way works!
Samantha says
This oats recipe is truly amazing. Next week this will be my breakfast at work 🙂 Thank you!
Cristy Hofer says
Hi, I’m excited to try these out. Is there really a need to shake it at night? I kinda like the way it looks arranged in a mason jar.
Would it really last 3 days in the ref? Was planning to offer this as a snack at our school.
Thanks,
Cristy
Jason Sanford says
You don’t have to shake it and yes it will last!
Corey says
Wow… I tried this for breakfast this morning and I am hooked. I did the oats, chia seeds, dannon low fat toasted coconut yogurt, bananas and blue berries and unsweetened vanilla almond milk. The flavor I got out of this is amazing. It tastes like cinnamon which I didn’t put any cinnamon in and after eating half of it, I was stuffed. This will be a must have breakfast in my house. Thanks so much for sharing… great recipe!!!!
Mary says
I was wondering what is non-dairy yogurt is?
Jason Sanford says
They sell things like almond milk yogurt, soy yogurt, coconutmilk yogurt, etc. It’s in the same area at most grocery stores as the dairy yogurt and is a good sub for people who are lactose intolerant, vegan, or just want to try something new.
Nene says
I am not a fan of oatmeal, I want to like it for the health benefits. So I am going to try this recipe and I hope I like it.
Are most people eat this cold or hot?
Thank you!
Jason Sanford says
Honestly it is completely up to you 🙂
Mary says
How many days in advance can I make this? Does it keep for a few days? For instance, can I prepare 4 jars and eat on it for four days? Thank you so much
Jason Sanford says
I often make it and have them last at least 4 days.
Mary says
Great!! Thank you so much
Julie says
Can you make a weeks worth of these on a Sunday and then use them over the course of a week?
Julie says
Sorry just saw the post!
Rebecca says
Katie,
I love the idea of making a hearty, healthful breakfast the night before, but I have a few questions: can you heat the oatmeal in the microwave in the morning? I really love nice warm oatmeal but don’t know how this would do. Also, can you make several containers ahead of time and eat them throughout the week, or would they get too mushy/thick?
Thanks!
Rebecca
Jason Sanford says
Yes and yes you can!
Tia Thomson says
I love the overnight oats, but I have a question. Can you make up a week’s worth and leave them in the fridge and they won’t spoil? If you can is it only certain types. My Dad needs a healthier breakfast but I am not there every day. So these would be great for him if they won’t spoil or get mushy. Thank you.
Tia Thomson says
Sorry thought I read all the posts, but I missed these and they answer my question. Thank you co much.
Tia Thomson says
Can you use something in this besides oatmeal? It seems to be making me sick. So I was just wondering. Thank you love a lot of your recipies.
Christina says
Hurray! I was hoping that you would do another oatmeal recipe and you did 15! One word of caution is not to heat oatmeal made with yogurt. Yogurt turns unpleasantly sour when heated. That is true for dairy and non-dairy yogurt.
Also, did you know that it is possible to make your own vegan yogurt using a can of coconut milk and a couple probiotic capsules? There is no cooking required — you put everything into a mason jar and wait a few days. If you haven’t heard of that method of making yogurt, I recommend looking it up and sharing your own rendition with your readers.
Jason Sanford says
Very true, thanks for pointing that out! Katie edited to clarify.

To be frank, I needed overnight oats to grow on me. However, ever since I started experimenting with it and customizing different flavors, I was converted into a fan! My favorite overnight oats recipe includes rolled oats, almond milk, water, vegan protein powder, cacao powder, peanut butter powder, cinnamon, a little turmeric, a teensy but of black pepper, and some flax seeds!
Sarah says
Mmmm I absolutely love overnight oats! The new flavor ideas look amazing! I cannot wait to try some of these!
Toni says
I love this recipe and especially love all the flavor options.
Tara says
I made the banana bread over night oats and enjoyed a delicious and healthy breakfast this morning.
Alex says
Wow! I love all the different options. I’m going to try a new one every day.
Andrea says
I had a delicious and healthy breakfast this morning thanks to you.
Alexa says
Hey Katie! As a calorie-conscious thin girl, I appreciate you including the calorie/nutrition information. Many times, people don’t realize how caloric oatmeal can really be. Sticking to 1/2 of rolled oats helps the calorie count stay down,
Also, love the topping ideas! Do you use carob chips, or do you use regular? I would feel SO naughty if I ate chocolate for breakfast, but to each her own. Anyways, props to you for showing versatile, delicious ways to keep oatmeal within the reasonable calorie limit, with creative flavors to boot.
Thanks!
Alexa

Carob would definitely work, and that sounds like a wonderful way to use them! I am always trying to think of more ways to use carob 🙂

I made the Blueberry overnight oats and the strawberry shortcake oats over the weekend. They turned out great! My first time making overnight oats and I am so happy the way they turned out. So quick and easy to make!

Katie,
You noted that instead of the 1/2 cup of yogurt, additional milk can be used. I thought that meant 1/2 cup of additional milk, but when I tried it that way, it came out much too liquidy. Can you edit the language in the instructions so it’s clear that if additional milk is used in place of yogurt it should not be a full half cup?
Thanks!
Jason Sanford says
Hi! It actually IS a full 1 cup milk if not using yogurt.
I rarely make mine with yogurt anymore just because then I don’t have to keep yogurt on hand. What type of milk did you use? The oats should soak up the milk overnight in the fridge. How liquidy was it, and what type of oats did you use?
Jason
Elizabeth Bueno says
Do you have to use salt?
Chocolate Covered Katie says
I personally don’t like the taste of oatmeal without salt, which makes it taste less flat. But if you are used to the taste of oatmeal without salt, please feel free to omit! You can always add a little if you think it tastes flat.
Mandy says
SO glad I found your page! Lots of good looking recipes! Have you used steel cut oats?
Jason Sanford says
Hi Mandy! You can definitely use steel cut oats here 🙂
Can You Make Overnight Steel Cut Oats?
You can! The results will have a chewy texture that some might even prefer to a version made with quick or rolled oats. They’re less chewy if you make them more than a day in advance.
J says
I am NOT a breakfast person, usually can’t face anything in the morning (other than hot chocolate) even if I’m very hungry! But… along came overnight oats :):):):) I’m a fan 🙂
However I do find that a serving size as per the recipe is quite huge… I do a half serving and its about right for me 🙂 thank you
Chocolate Covered Katie says

Can I use heavy whipping cream instead of milk?
Jason Sanford says
Sure you could!
Christina Walter says
I love breakfast puddings and have found that the first recipe in the link below is a great alternative sometimes to overnight oats. I noticed you don’t use tapioca in many (any?) recipes – is there a reason for that? Anyway, I guess you’d have to skip the bee pollen since you’re vegan. This recipe is delicious, filling, beautiful, and unlike anything else I’ve ever eaten. You have to try it!

I have been saying the last couple of years I am going to try to make overnight oats. I purchased my chia seeds and other ingredients and never made any….specifically because I’ve never been a fan of oatmeal, although I’d settle for it a few occasions. Nevertheless, I just took a leap and printed these overnight oats varieties and made a week’s worth. OMG!!! Yummy. Already, I’ve fallen head over heels with the first two flavors I’ve tried. Can’t wait to make all of the other variations over the next few weeks. THANKS SO MUCH!
Drake T. Porter says
So glad I found you on IG Katie! I made the brownie batter oats you mentioned in another post and they were delicious! Know with this post I can try multiple flavors now! Got my monkey oats in the fridge ready for the morning! 🙂

in the nutritional analysis it only says it used strawberries for the fruit. It doesn’t specify what milk choice was used and which type of yogurt. Can you please specify?

I made a cinnamon peach for this morning!
1c oats
1c almond milk
1 individual container of peach yogurt
Couple dashes of cinnamon
1 crushed graham cracker
(My toddler boys are always begging for bites so I upped my oats, milk and yogurt to more than directed so I still had plenty for myself)
Jason Sanford says
That sounds so amazing!
Emma says
Can you use frozen fruit?
Jason Sanford says
Yes!
Supriya Kutty says

Jason Sanford says
That sounds absolutely amazing!
Grandma says
Thank you for all these recipes. I have never tried overnight oats. I’m interested to try the strawberry or blueberry oats. I don’t know about chocolate overnight oats. It might be too strange.

I absolutely love these. So delicious and convenient. Thank you Katie

PSA: YOU CAN MICROWAVE QUICK OATS FOR 1 MIN 30 SECS AND SKIP THE OVERNIGHT OATS!!
Overnight oats are pointless. They are a time-sink concocted by bloggers to take advantage of people who aren’t super comfortable in the kitchen. If you like to eat your oats warm–and really who doesn’t, because cold oatmeal sounds just awful–then just make them in the morning. Add any toppings or plant milk you like after microwaving. In other words, if you were planning to heat up your overnight oats anyway, then just skip the overnight part. It is a waste of time and energy.
1/2 cup quick oats + 1 cup water, microwave for 1 min 30 secs and you have warm, delicious oats with NO silly jars or wasteful single-serve packets. It is the quickest, cheapest, healthiest, easiest breakfast. If you have old-fashioned oats, you can microwave those too, just up the time to 2 mins.
The overnight oats craze is a really annoying, instagram-fueled way of making healthy eating more complicated and expensive for people.
Anamarie says
Its for people like me who have zero time to prepare breakfast. Dont hate.
Kate says
This is unnecessarily negative and condescending. You can share your version of the recipe without insulting the original poster.
Lailah says
As a current student who has to catch the bus at 6:30 am, I prefer to make overnight oats as I can make it and clean up the night before. It most definitely saves me time in the kitchen. I don’t have any single serve packets or anything like that, I rolled oats that come in large packs. I don’t do it for health, I do it for the speed. It saves me time and energy. They aren’t pointless, it’s just something I prefer.
j says
You must be fun at parties.
Ellen says
Wow Kendall, don’t you have anything better to do with your life than get upset over a food blog?
ander says
They aren’t a time sink, they save you the time of cooking the oats. And it’s perfect if you prefer to prepare in the evening. Did you consider this is actually convenient and enjoy able for many? That’s why it’s popular?
I’m experienced on the kitchen. In the winter I prefer to make traditional hot oatmeal. In the summer I prefer overnight oats, and have for years.
Katie’s flavour ideas are delightful 🙂

Hi! I know I am coming in late in the game but has anyone made these for their toddlers? My 1 years old is not a fan of oatmeal but I really want him to get the fibre and iron he needs to I look for ways to spruce it up! Also, how long can these be kept in the fridge and can I use frozen fruit?
Lesley-Anne says
One *year old ?
Jason Sanford says
3-4 days, or you can freeze them. They definitely work with frozen fruit and are toddler friendly 🙂

Hi, what size of the le parfait jam jars did you purchase to use for your overnight oats? I see there are 11, 13, and 15 oz options on amazon. Thanks!
Ellen says
Use the smallest option and they’ll fill mostly to the top 🙂
Abbigayle says
I love this recipe! I make this and it is great for before school! Thank You😊
Olivia says
I have tried the chocolate overnight oats and it was yummy! Definitely give it a try!
Sarah says
Just in my opinion, the ratio of ingredients is off. All I can taste is yogurt. It overpowers any add ins. The consistency is nice but the flavor is not.
Ellen says
Sounds like you should try a different type/brand of yogurt? Mine didn’t have that problem, and I made five flavors 🙂
Carla says
Made the Mint Chocolate Chip ONO for my breakfast this morning and I did half semi sweet chocolate chips and half white chocolate chips and oh my word! it was so good! I can’t wait to try out the other flavor combos!

Thank you so much for making it!
oatmeal_lovin_gal says
Pretty decent recipe. Just make sure you use 1/2 cup milk of choice and 1/2 cup yogurt of choice and probably also chia seeds for a thick and creamy result. If I use only milk it turns out kind of watery.
Kelsie says
What a great variety of choices!
Is the nutrition information that states it’s for the strawberry version include the chia seeds and nutrition butter? I need to know the calories.
charlene wilde says
We love this recipe! Thank you. I have been adding a splash of vanilla as well.

This is a simple breakfast that’s definitely useful if you don’t have a lot of time. The texture is good with the oats/milk/yogurt ratio as is, and it’s super customizable—we’ll definitely be making this a lot in the future!
Don says
One great advantage of Overnight Oats that Kendall did not think of is mobility. Sometimes I am in such a rush to get out the door in the morning that I grab the Overnight Oats jar just before I leave so I can eat it at the Break Room at work just before I punch in.
Lisa says
I am very new to this. Can you give me examples for “sweetner of choice”? Thanks for any help.

Sure thing! Sugar, maple syrup, date paste, agave, coconut sugar, brown sugar, microwaved banana, etc 🙂

I’m usually groggy when I wake up and can’t think what to eat but now with those overnight oats, I just need to pop it out of the fridge. I make them with coconut milk & coconut yogurt. I tried it the blueberries one and peanut butter with a dash of ovomaltine.

Amazing recipe! Lovely breakfast on an early morning. So easy as I just grab it and go to work! I tried the Apple, cinnamon, raisin mixture and it was perfect! Definitely recommend doing vegan yoghurt instead of extra milk for creaminess!

After making Katie’s 100 calorie cake (again), I found this recipe. I used Bob’s Red Mill Muesli in place of the oats, added 1 tb of honey, cinnamon, salt and blueberries. I am amazed at how delicious this recipe is! I only ate half as I am not a big breakfast eater, but feel full! I am using the Noom program and the calorie count I calculated based on Katie’s measurements is 164 for the 1/2 serving. Thank you Katie!!
Katy says
These overnight oats were so yummy! Going into the regular healthy breakfast rotation, thank you!

I used to hate oatmeal. But they’ve been so popular on social media and food blogs that it made me give oats another try. These are a far cry from the mushy instant oatmeal from Quaker that I remember growing up with. Adding all the different ingredients to the variations helps a ton with the texture too.

I love overnight oats but found that they were playing havoc with my blood sugars. Started making them with mostly water and just a touch of milk instead of all milk (I use almond milk) and that has helped to keep me from spiking after eating.

Katie we love your recipes!

I just made a few batches with Ripple milk (for protein). Since I didn’t have dairy free yogurt on hand, I double the milk, and I think it’s a bit too much-the oats were a little “wetter” than I’d prefer. I’m going to scale back to 3/4 cup and see how the next batch turns out. Quick, simple breakfast!
Rae Smith says
Been making these for years and possibilities are endless.
Great for next morning company. I’ll make a variety and let them choose.
I’ve given this recipe out to at least 50 people.
My sister’s Hilton hotel employees make these and keep them in the break room.
I usually use Quick Oats, don’t care for Steel cut.

I’ve been using this recipe for years. So delicious and versatile. Chose to make some this evening as I’ve gone back on a diabetic diet recently. With 4 kids these are convenient for those chaotic school mornings or early Drs appointments. I use almond milk, Greek yogurt, 2 Tbsp PB and 1 Tbsp SF syrup so the base for mine is only 445 calories. Healthy, filling and curbs that ugly sweet tooth. Thanks for the recipe!
