White chocolate is not really chocolate.
- Just like tomatoes aren’t really vegetables.
- Lentils aren’t really beans.
- Koalas aren’t really bears…
Life’s confusing, isn’t it?
Sometimes people are surprised to find not a single white chocolate recipe on this entire chocolate-covered blog. White chocolate has just never been my favorite thing… because I want it to taste like chocolate and am mad when it doesn’t!
Plus, most white chocolate chips aren’t vegan, and they are full of unhealthy trans fats (partially-hydrogenated oils) and artificial ingredients.
Many of you have asked if I could come up with recipes that include chocolate’s paler cousin. But to do that, I first had to figure out how to make my own healthy white chocolate.
Thankfully, it turned out to be really, really easy!
I read up about white chocolate on Wikipedia and checked out the candy bars at the grocery store. Research! (To make research fun, all you have to do is get out of the library and head to the chocolate aisle. Who knew?)
They all consist of the same basic ingredients: cacao butter, milk solids (dry milk), sugar, and salt… Pretty much, as long as you have the one magic ingredient, the white chocolate is so easy to make it can hardly even be called a recipe.
White Chocolate Chips
(can be sugar-free)
- 2-inch cube cacao butter (30 grams, or 2 tbsp after melting)
- scant 1/8 tsp pure vanilla extract
- stevia or powdered sugar to taste (2 tbsp if powdered sugar)
- 1 tbsp raw cashew or macadamia butter (can omit; it’ll just be less creamy) (15g)
- very tiny pinch salt
- optional: If you can find it, I highly recommend adding 1/2 tsp dry milk powder—such as soy or ricemilk powder—to the ingredients for optimum creamy texture, as this is one of the basic ingredients in every white chocolate bar I looked at during my aforementioned research. However, knowing that a lot of people would have trouble finding the powder, I also tried omitting it. And then I tried adding protein powder instead (increasing to 1 tsp). Omitting or adding the protein powder instead will yield a texture that’s a little different than store-bought white chocolate, but both ways still work! (Just please don’t add liquid milk. I tried that too, and it doesn’t work.)
Melt the cacao butter (either in the microwave or on the stove). Turn off heat, then stir in all other ingredients. Pour into candy molds or a plastic container, and freeze until it hardens. Healthier and vegan white chocolate chips. Yay!
Question of the Day:
Are you going to vote tonight?
I never got around to early voting, so I will be going tonight. Unfortunately, my roommate’s and my opposite votes are going to cancel each other out… we jokingly thought about just staying home!
Link of the Day:
Quin says
YAY FIRST COMMENT! Lol. Thanks so much for this recipe Katie! Now I can combine this recipe with your Macadamia Nut Cookie recipe!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I was thinking of that too… or the blondies or banana bread. I actually already tried using them for the chocolate bar pie, but that idea definitely needs some work. It was… not very good!
Tanya @ Playful and hungry says
That’s a great idea! Those cookies are awesome…
Victoria (District Chocoholic) says
Real white chocolate has cocoa butter and is therefore chocolate. Fake, cheap stuff – the baking chips – has vegetable shortening instead and is not.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I’ve actually read that no white chocolate is considered chocolate because it lacks cocoa solids/ cocoa licqueur. I guess maybe it depends on the definition you’re using. Now I just googled “is white chocolate really chocolate” and it seems people are split.
Victoria (District Chocoholic) says
Cocoa butter IS a cocoa solid.
Alex says
Victoria,
Katie is right. Cocoa solids are the low- fat reddish or brown solids that are taken from a cocoa bean during the separation of cocoa butter and cocoa solids. Cocoa butter, on the other hand, is the fat component that is extracted during this process. They are distinguishable by color, texture, chemical properties, and in the fact that cocoa solids contain caffeine, whereas cocoa butter, when separated correctly and completely, does not. Just because cocoa butter becomes solid at certain temperatures does not mean that it “IS a cocoa solid” as you have said, it simply means that it is a solid by physical property. I would suggest doing more research before coming so hard at Katie, who clearly knows what she is talking about! Thanks for an awesome recipe Katie and doing such great research!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Thanks, Alex! 🙂
But no worries… I never mind going back to check if someone thinks I made a mistake, as sometimes it turns out that I did.
Victoria (District Chocoholic) says
If this is coming down hard on somebody…I have no idea what you people do for day jobs. Perspective…
anonymous says
Sorry Victoria, but I agree with Alex. Your repeated insistence without even bothering to check first was just weird.
I don’t mean to start a war, Katie. You can delete my comment if you want to.
Jina says
Oh my god. This is ridiculous. Victoria was hard on Katie. Are you kidding me? If you thought that was mean I dont know how you survived high school, unless youre not in high school yet, which I suspect.
Please Katie tell your followers to CALM DOWN. They are making this blog difficult to read.
Harsha says
I agree. Attacking anyone who expresses a contrary opinion is not cool. Victoria was not hard. She just expressed an opinion. And I can see that she has a blog dedicated to chocolate too so she is not just saying things. My dad works in a chocolate factory and he considers white chocolate as “chocolate” too. There is really no right or wrong in this. Katie, I would also request you to please ask readers to stop fighting among themselves. You are a sweet person and your blog is a feel-good place.
Crafty lil vegan says
I think the everyone needs to calm down a touch here. It’s a great recipe! I personally love white chocolate, but can rarely find a vegan version! This will make it so much easier!
Also, Surely you’re all here to read Katies lovely recipes and posts? If the readers comments are “making the blog hard to read”, I think you’re spending too much time reading the wrong part..
Focus on the positive posts =] not the petty comments! Katie really shouldn’t have to ask her readers to play nice! We’re all grown-ups here! We’re fully capable of being nice all on our own =]
(not trying to offend anyone here, just stating an opinion)
Harsha says
You are absolutely right of course, and if people were as mature as this, then there would be no problems. And yes, I agree that we need to focus on the positives. The thing is, often a lot of reader queries get answered in the comments section, and I like to read through the comments to see if a particular query of mine has already been answered before asking it (and more often than not, i find the answer I am looking for). So its not really a good choice to stop reading comments. And when people start attacking anyone who expresses a contradictory opinion, it makes it difficult for the rest of us not to get irritated. For instance, in this particular case, I would have been really interested to know if white chocolate is indeed chocolate or not. My dad works in a chocolate factory and he says it is, but I have heard many saying its not. I would have been interested to hear from Victoria and Katie as they both are experts on chocolate in their own way. But some over-zealous readers just jumped in and started saying things like Victoria was coming down “too hard” on Katie, which was ridiculous according to me. I agree that it’s not Katie’s job to tell readers to play nice, but if she does, the blog will be much more pleasant and informative. And who else can do it better than her? I agree it’s not her job, but it doesn’t mean she shouldn’t interfere at all. It’s not like just because you are on Katie’s blog, you have to agree with her no matter what she says, right? As long as the commenter is being respectful, I don’t see why anyone else should rush to Katie’s defense. What could have been an interesting discussion on chocolate turned out to be a slinging match here and that could have been avoided. That’s all I wanted to point out (By the way, no offense taken and none intended either)
Crafty lil vegan says
Harsha, if only everyone could express themselves so eloquently =]
Sephanie R says
According to the FDA, “chocolate” must contain 10% cocoa mass (including cocoa nibs which is absent from white chocolate or cocoa butter). So, technically speaking you are technically wrong. No nibs, no chocolate. It’s like saying that water is tea, you need water to make tea but water without the tea leave extracts is definitely not tea. Just saying…..
Erin | The Law Students Wife says
Nice detective work Katie!! These would be so delicious in oatmeal or pumpkin bars. I love white chocolate with dried cranberries too. Perhaps healthy cranberry bliss bars? Tis the season!
Andrea says
I am in love with this idea! I’ve already had three of those bars since they came out last week, but I know they must be terribly unhealthy. If it’s something you’re interested in trying out, Katie, I’m sure there are many of us who would love you even more for it!
Sara says
You are my heroe, seriously .
I cant believe this! Amazing, will try this for sure
Greetings from Belgium !

Can you recommend a brand of food grade cacao butter, or suggestions for where you can buy it? I’ve never seen it in my local stores — and I’ve been looking — I miss white chocolate! Thank you!!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I wrote more in this link: https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/white-chocolate-chips-calories-and-nutrition-facts/
But the brand I found is Artisana, at Whole Foods.
Laura says
I’m not old enough to vote, but my mom is leaving to right now.
Don’t ever, ever, EVER, stay home on election day! It doesn’t matter who someone else voting for! If you don’t vote you are giving up one of your most powerful rights! Why would anyone give up the chance to affect their own future? Think about all the people in the world who wish they had the opportunity we have!
I’m sorry to rant, I just really hate it when people suggest not voting. 🙁
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Oh no, we weren’t being serious… we just thought it was funny. We also debated putting up two signs in front of our house. You know, to confuse the neighbors ;).
Laura says
Lol, that would be funny! I get it now. I thought you probably were joking but there are some people who aren’t. Some topics just make me explode! 😉
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I guess it was confusing the way I had it worded originally. I said “seriously” but meant it in a joking way… I love the fact that I get to vote (not just for the president, but for other things and people as well).
Tanya @ Playful and hungry says
I love white chocolate…
But I think, for me, getting cocoa butter is even more expensive than buying vegan white chocolate chips (which are pretty expensive where I live, too)…
Sunnie says
BUT, the good thing is that you can determine how much sugar – if you use sugar at all! – is in your white chocolate. 🙂 I like the idea of stevia-sweetened chocolate.
Erica {EricaDHouse.com} says
Lol – I LOVE your voting theory!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I think white chocolate is okay, but I much prefer dark chocolate. And I voted absentee ballot already! Makes today a little simpler.
Olivia@ OmNom Love says
I literally almost started jumping up & down when I saw this recipe. All the possibilities! Personally, I’m not a fan of white chocolate by itself, but when it’s combined with regular chocolate, pretzels, M&Ms, etc. it’s amazing.
I don’t vote, because I’m only 13 and, honestly, it saddens me how both canidates say stupid things & twist the truth to benefit only themselves. 🙁 Obviously, I will never go into politics.
i love tofu says
Hey, I thought I was the only thirteen year old reading this blog! In fact, I thought I was the only 13 year old vegan on the planet. Now I feel a lot less weird.:)
It IS sad how politicians and candidates say stuff just to be president.
Olivia@ OmNom Love says
Good to know that I’m not alone! Lol! I’m not exactly vegan, but I do avoid dairy and eggs for allergy reasons. Nice to meet (is it called meeting if we haven’t actually seen each other???) someone my own age! 🙂
Rebecca630 says
I’m a 14 year old vegan 🙂 I was when I was 13 too though. This recipe sounds yummy! I can’t wait to try it 🙂
Jen says
Thought the voting comment was pretty irresponsible.
Aubrey says
It’s a personal choice. Don’t bash others for it.
Jen says
It’s a civic responsibility. I understand now it was a joke but it was not initially read as such. Katie speaks to a large audience. The theme of the blog isn’t political but one certainly has responsibilities when reaching out to groups of people. In any case, I wasn’t bashing anyone.
jenn a. says
actually. we’re given the freedom to choose to vote. people shouldn’t feel the pressure to vote if they don’t want to…I easily read it as a joke, so I’m not sure how it was irresponsible, if someone is seriously gonna take a comment so far out of context like that, and choose not to vote, it obviously wasn’t very important to them in the first place. Yes, we’re lucky we get to vote, but we’re also lucky we have the option not to vote, it’s all about the freedom of choice.
Mandy says
It’s a right, not a responsibility. Don’t confuse the two.
Nicole says
Oh my… there are too many people who read this blog just to make negative comments about Katie’s thoughts or opinions… if you don’t like it, don’t read it.
Mary says
I took Katie’s comment about not voting as a “joke” as well (I, myself, have “joked” with a couple friends who’s vote opposed mine, saying that I HAD to vote whether I wanted to or not – just so I could cancel out THEIR vote, lol. But that’s all it was – a joke… 😉 … However, I will say that Aubrey and Mandy are correct, in my opinion. Voting IS a right. However, if you choose NOT to vote, then you also forfeit your rights to complain later down the line about whom ever gets into office… I strongly urge EVERYONE to exercise your RIGHT to voice your opinion and VOTE!! … Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe Katie! I look forward to trying it! 😉
Tessa says
My goodness gracious. I got the joke- it seemed fairly clear.
The white chocolate sounds great. I am not vegan, but white chocolate is usually full of so much nastiness, so this sounds like a much better option!
Margaux says
Not to fuel this ridiculous debate much more, but I should point out that – whether intentional or not – Katie votes every time she visits the market or posts a delicious recipe. There is so much more to civic responsibility than showing up at the polls every four years and voting for a president. A few major food producers have an obscene impact on the entire political realm, and neither candidate had clean hands on that front. The issue of food production is clearly important to Katie and she is doing a very good job leading by example with that issue. I find it pretty difficult to take offense to a (pretty blatant) joke from someone with nothing but good intentions, who is (again, whether knowingly or not) very actively representing her standpoint on an issue that affects everyone.
Tessa@TessaTheDomesticDiva says
Hi Katie! I thought it was worth mentioning that this will not taste like the white chocolate confection most people consider to be white chocolate. Cocoa butter has a very strong chocolate flavor…of which there is none in the yucky stuff you buy in the store. Did you notice that? I made several versions awhile ago and realized I wasn’t going to get that white chocolate I remember from my youth with cocoa butter. What did you think? Cocoa butter DOES make some very luscious homemade chocolate though!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
There actually IS cacao butter in most of the bars I looked at. Maybe that was because I looked at Whole Foods?
Tessa@TessaTheDomesticDiva says
did you think your tasted like the white chocolate confection most people buy? Or more chocolatey?
liz says
I’m hoping that it’s not too late to ask this since the last post was in 2012, but…
I’m on the specific carbohydrate diet (SCD) and really have missed regular chocolate chips in cookies because coconut oil based chocolate melts too quickly to hold together in baking and just drips out of the cookie. Does Cocoa butter really hold up in baking like regular chocolate does? I was thinking I could try mixing cocoa powder and honey into it to make chocolate chips! For someone who hasn’t had a chocolate chip cookie in 9 months, this would be AMAZING!
liz says
Shoot, sorry, I just saw where someone else asked the same question. Hard to find the comments about food when they’re buried in all the political goofiness. I don’t want you to delete people’s posts because they disagree with you, I want you to delete people’s rabbit trails so your readers don’t have to spend a whole hour skimming through unrelated content just to see if their question has been answered. Great post, great recipes, good job not being drawn in by “trolls” trying to just see how much angst they can stir up!
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
Your genius! I am going to try this!! Way better then what is in the stores. But where do you buy cacoa butter?
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Natural food stores, or online. Look for Artisana.
Leah says
White chocolate is so good, thanks for posting this. However, pandas are bears. Red pandas are not. Koalas are not.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Oh darn it… I’d meant to look that up to be sure before I posted. And now that I looked it up, it turns out I’m wrong! I’d always heard that they weren’t really bears. Thanks for the heads up. *Feels silly*
JacquieK says
Katie, if you’re going to “joke” about voting, at least let everyone know you’re joking. It’s important that young leaders think of their followers and the impact their words have on them. Whether you realize it or not, you are a leader! Please be careful. This is a right and a responsibility of every eligible American that we can’t take lightly. Thank you.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Sorry about that… I’m thinking you’re reading my post through email. I actually changed the post on the blog to reflect what I really meant.
Lisa says
Everybody just need to chill out. Obviously, Katie was joking. If you didn’t know that Katie was joking, then you probably just have not been reading her blog very long. A few other commentors have already pointed out the fact that it is every citizen’s choice as ro whether or not to vote.
Beth says
If so many people asked her to be more clear, then maybe it wasnt so “obvious”.
jenn a. says
I’m sorry but people are taking the voting thing way too seriously, and just want something to complain or argue about…
Samantha says
No kidding. I used to live with a guy that swayed differently than me and we joked about canceling each others votes all the time. 🙂 And yes, we still voted. 🙂
adorpheus says
Agreed
Alanna says
Already voted this morning! Please, everyone get out and vote, no matter who it’s for. And remember that you’re also voting for Congressional and state representatives, not just the President! Lots to be decided, so go be heard!
Monica says
I already voted this morning. I know that I have friends who have cancelled my vote, but I like to think that I cancelled their vote. 🙂 The thing that makes me sad is that it is all determined by the electoral college, so our voice isn’t really being heard as clearly as it should be. I don’t like white chocolate either, so the mention of voting was the best part. 🙂
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Yes, that upsets me as well! I feel like it gives some people (living in swing states, for example) a bigger say in the outcome; their votes mean more. And there are other systems/ideas (not just going by the popular vote, which has its own drawbacks) I feel would work better. Then again, it’s easy for me to sit back and criticize when I’m not the one actually writing the laws. I try to remember that… no system is going to be perfect. But I share your frustration with our current system.
Kerry says
I totally understand what you mean. I have lived all of my life in Washington and never felt my vote for the president mattered. The presidents were already giving their victory speeches before the votes in Washington were even tallied. I didn’t realize the difference of empowerment until I moved to Florida three years ago. This is my first presidential election cycle in Florida and I am only now realizing the power of my vote, because I am in such an important swing state. Strange, this whole system. But, I agree, Katie, it is easy for me to criticize here at home. We do what we can though. Aaaaand, thank you for the recipe! The store bought vegan white chips are pretty gross. This is perfect timing for the holidays. Keep up the spirited blog! You are a positive light! 🙂
Jody says
Can you MAKE cacao butter?? or do you have to buy it?
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I think you have to buy it, as it’s a raw ingredient.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
“raw” as in it’s not something that is made with other ingredients. It IS the only ingredient, if that makes sense.
Jody says
I thought cocoa butter was pretty much lotion… Im SO confused right now.
Christi says
lol…what she used in the recipe is food-grade cacao butter, not the kind you would find at a drugstore that is sold as a moisturizer.
Labbie1 says
You can get the powdered milk solids at shelfreliance.com–at least I think that is what you are referring to and mountainroseherbs.com has cocoa butter at $4.75 for 4 oz. or $13.75 per lb. Hope this helps!
Liz @ IHeartVegetables says
Yummmm katie this sounds so good! I’ll definitely have to try it!
Joy says
Yay!!! I love white chocolate!! And my husband and I are trying to go “as vegan as possible” so this will be super helpful… Provided I can find cacao butter. :-). I’ve actually always preferred white chocolate.
I already voted by absentee ballot. I vote in a swing state, so I triple-checked to make sure my ballot got there and will be counted today. 🙂 I think it would have been hilarious for you and your roommate to put opposing signs on your lawn. Hooray for democracy!
Chrissy says
I’m with you. White chocolate is not chocolate. I like hints of it, like white chocolate chips in cranberry cookies. But to just eat it plain? No way.
Melissa @ My Whole Food Life says
Thank you for this recipe! I love white chocolate and have not been impressed with the store bought vegan ones. Can’t wait to try this!
Rhonda says
Yummy! I like your recipes because I have to make things sugar free. Dairy free doesn’t hurt either, but it’s awesome to know how to make good sugar-free treats. I voted early — I love early voting, this is my third time now. No stress on election day. I’ll tell you one thing — I’ll be glad when it’s over. I’m so sick of the hype. And people are so divided this time!
S says
LOVE white chocolate. It has a subtle chocolate flavor that’s not too intense.
alloyjane says
Excellent! I’ve always wondered how to go about this, but I’m not a fan of experimenting with candy. Too messy.
As for voting, I absolutely did. I voted absentee with my mom and turned the ballots in to our polling place this morning. Considering what people went through to make sure I could vote, I’d be insulting their sacrifice by staying home. People died for this right, and in other countries, they’re still dying. If that isn’t serious, then what is?
Mindy says
Yay for white chocolate chips and voting! I’m definitely on the real chocolate side, too… but especially for Christmas sometimes you just need white chocolate for a recipe. And have you SEEN the prices on buying vegan white choc online??! Crazy town.
And my brothers vote and my vote will cancel each other out but we’re still going for sure. It’s too exciting to miss out 🙂
Mallory says
Ohmygosh!!! I was just daydreaming about these in class (from an earlier post when you mentioned working on the recipe…) Thank you!!!
Leanne @ Healthful Pursuit says
Yum! I wasn’t much of a white chocolate fan either growing up… but I did love those white chocolate macadamia nut cookies, man… they’re delicious!
Cari says
Poor Katie. Too much grief for a post about white chocolate!!! But you did an excellent job of editing on the fly, because your current post is fabulous. And I am way more of a bitter, dark chocolate fan, but am thrilled to have some decent white chocolate to throw into an oatmeal, cranberry cookie! Woo-hoo! If you want to get started on that recipe for me, that’d be great. Feel free to bake them, leave them as dough, turn it into breakfast oatmeal, add macadamia nuts. I’m just thinking that would be a great combo for the holidays…hint, hint. 😉
Love your site. You continue to completely fulfill my cravings for sweets, while still maintaining my wish to offer nutritious foods to my family. I just love being able to dump a cup of chocolate chips into something and still tell myself it’s health food. Yay!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I will put it on my to-do list! If not this year, maybe in the cookbook or next year!
Ashley @ Wishes and Dishes says
I actually am a HUGE white “chocolate” fan! I prefer it to real chocolate (GASP!) Thanks for the recipe!!
Kelsey says
Hi! I tried to email you, but I don’t think that button is working (or it doesn’t do what I thought it did!). I would really love to see a toffee recipe–my mother’s toffee is all sugar and cream, but it’s my absolute favorite!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
It’s on my list of things to try :).
Aubree says
I second this!
Hannah says
If for any reason you’re unable to eat sugar you can make toffee with xylitol. It reacts exactly the same way as sugar when heated (i.e. turns into caramel). Tastes the same too. And while I’ve never tried it myself you could probably add soy, almond, coconut or oat cream substitutes instead of normal cream if you are vegan or intolerant/allergic to dairy products (coconut cream is probably the best option for making toffee as cream substitutes like soy tend to be quite low in fat, whereas coconut cream has a fat content similar to normal dairy cream).
Kay Charlotte says
Be careful with Xylitol however, as large quantities makes you have the runs. :\ Had to find that out the hard way.
Rachel says
Third!
Vyvacious says
Awesome! So does this taste like white chocolate or does it have a different flavor? I really despise the white chocolate taste so I’m wondering if this exactly mimics that or not.
Absentee ballot all the way! The only thing that makes me sad is that I don’t have time to walk in my ballot so that I can get a sticker. Sad panda (bear).
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I think it pretty much tastes like the white chocolate I remember.
Laura says
Yay for voting! I vote by mail, and the only downside is I don’t get the “I voted” sticker to wear on election day.
Andrea says
I actually did vote in person, and they didn’t have any stickers! Major bummer. I mean, obviously, still yay for participating in the democratic process of course, but grown-ups so rarely get stickers for accomplishing things 🙂
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Same here! I told them I was going to complain to the president of the United States… just as soon as I found out who he was ;).
Laura M says
How much does this recipe yield? I have a no-bake cookie recipe that is made with white chocolate, and am thinking of using this version instead of the store bought!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
It really depends on how big your candy molds are, or if you make bars. I didn’t actually count the amount I got… but if you make small chips you can get a lot out of it. I will have to go back and measure a cup amount soon!
Anna Stepka says
Were you ever able to go back and see how much this makes? I want to use it to make peppermint bark but I am not sure if I should double or triple this recipe . Thanks!
Rebecca says
I need to know the same thing! If anyone knows how much this makes, either in cups, ounces or grams, I’d be very grateful if they’d reply.
kim@hungryhealthygirl says
What a great invention! This would be great in some white chocolate macadamia nut cookies this Christmas! I didn’t get around to early voting either, so I’ll be out there tonight.
Karen says
Dear Katie,
I’m voting for you for President 🙂
Thank you thank you thank you a million billion trillion times over! I miss white chocolate and loved cookies with the white chips in them, thanks for posting this 🙂
Karen says
And I CANNOT wait for your cookbook to come out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Haha I don’t want the job! Too much stress! 😉 Although I don’t always agree with the president (not just this one, but past presidents as well), I admire the fact that he must work insanely hard to run our country (and often find his work met with criticism).
Thank you so much, Karen :).
Sarah says
Love these! I feel like a whole new world has opened up–white chocolate has always felt mysterious.
And not to be a plant nerd, but tomatoes are a vegetable. Vegetable is a culinary term, so any part of an edible plant can be a vegetable (roots, leaves, fruits, buds, tubers, etc). Botanically, tomatoes are a fruit, as are cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins etc, as in they are formed from a developed flower. Wow, I am a nerd! 🙂
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I love learning new things in the comment section… Science was never my strong suit, so any time I can learn, I am open to it. The world needs more nerds!
Kristyn says
In Asian groceries you can find coconut milk powder. I’ve never seen powdered soy or rice milk but powdered coconut milk is really easy to find
Aja says
That is really interesting. I never knew there wasn’t any chocolate in white chocolate. That explains so much.
narf7 says
We have soy milk powder and coconut milk powder here in Australia so I might give both of them a whiz and see how they go. Cheers for another wonderful recipe Katie 🙂
Nicole says
We do? Where can you find soy milk powder?
narf7 says
“We” do, here in Australia. You should try Asian shops as they usually sell it and if you have no luck, you can get it here in bulk

It’s not often that we Aussies have something that you Americans/Canadians don’t! 😉

Yes, I’m Australian. I’ll have to have a look for this; thanks for the link.
Ekko says
Ok first the MOST important reason to happily visit this blog as much as possible (GOOD DESSERTS)! I’m actually quite excited about an awesome version of white chocolate chips to try.
Next I’m sorry so many people get upset over this voting thing. I think this year seems a bit more nerve racking than most years (at least that I’ve personally noticed in my years of voting which has only been about 12). None the less I’m used to people telling me my VOTE doesn’t even count b/c I vote 3rd party, but you know what – It counts for me.
You ROCK girl and thanks for sharing fun comments and other tid bits about YOU – I know its hard to put yourself out there with so many readers that it may put your writing to the test of walking on egg shells.
I ask your readers to kindly give you a break, its hard to always have the most perfect thing to say and type out. Sometimes its hard to get the feeling of what anyone is trying to say by reading text. So I’m asking the readers to kindly watch the things they say to you when they type comments, because some of them sound a bit harsh to me.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Aw thanks, Ekko 🙂
Aubree says
I have been looking for a vegan white chocolate chip for a recipe for a while now!! So far the best one I’ve found that isn’t crazy with it’s ingredients says that it tastes a little grainy (I haven’t actually tried it yet). Hopefully yours isn’t. I mostly just want it for Raspberry White Chocolate Chip (and sometimes Macadamia nut) cookies 🙂 So thanks for coming up with this!!
Brenda says
Thank you for this! I go CRAZY trying to find white chips that have real cocoa butter in them…. not an easy task.
I will be whipping up a batch to add to my chocolate oatmeal cookies!
Ed says
Wow that is super simple! I never thought of making those myself..great recipe!
Lisa says
Oh these look awesome. I’ve never used cocoa butter, I think I may need to buy some! Perfect for the holidays!
Nikki says
2 tbsp of melted cocoa butter yields 4 servings? I’m confused!
But it looks like an excellent recipe. Much more economical than organic vegan white chocolate, too. 🙂
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
It might seem strange, but it really does make a lot of chips.
sheila says
would you consider adding photographs showing the steps you take to reach the final product of your recipes? it would be great to see what things should look like along the way

I asked in a post awhile back, but people voted the idea down.
Andie says
That’s too bad…those pics are so helpful!
Stella says
I don’t get why you always say this. I asked you awhile back too and lots of people found the idea helpful. Actually, I can’t even recall people voting this idea down (minus probably 1,2 Debbie Downers). I mean it’s okay if you can’t/don’t want to do it because of your dark kitchen (which you’ve mentioned before) but don’t say the readers dismissed the idea because that’s just not true. Lots of blogs have step-by-step photos which are in general really helpful.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Actually, it is. Not sure why you’d think I was making it up 😕 https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2012/03/31/behind-the-scenes/
Stella says
I don’t even know why I’m arguing here right now, but: I’ve read the comments, the first bunch was all YES DO IT, then there were people saying your easier recipes don’t need these instruction because duh, they’re easy! Then, at the end, there were people saying they hate longass step-by-steps. But they were in no way the majority, sorry. However, you’ll never please everyone. I for one would find it very useful to see the texture of the dough in many of your recipes because I’ve had some failures which I can’t explain to myself (other than vegan baking IS different than regular baking). But of course no one needs photos of you pouring the dough in muffin tins or whatever or whisking the ingredients together.
Aurelie says
Thats is asked with so much respect I’m sure she’ll comply.
Anonymous says
haha, yah clearly the majority said “YES” to process photos. If you don’t want to/can’t do it, just own up to it. Don’t blame your readers.
ANON-E-MOUSE says
Katie, you’re awesome-possum. I’m not sure why there are so many haters commenting today. Keep up the great work, chica!
Stephanie says
Does ANYONE think this would be good on dried fruit (blueberries, raisins, cherries…) My BF loves yogurt covered whatever, but they are so bad for you.
Cindy says
At first I was all excited as usual reading about how to make white chocolate chips and then I started reading some of the responses about the voting comment and now I feel like exploding in anger! I am so sick of people always making something out of NOTHING! I read idiot comments on Facebook and now I have to be subjected to them on your superb blog! OH, but WAIT!! Maybe people will be smart enough to say ‘Well, you don’t have to read the comments.’ Hey, guess what!? That’s MY POINT!!! Let Katie write what she wants and how she wants and click off the page rather than junking up her comments page with your stupid criticisms.
And by the way, I did not vote today. Being from Texas, it would be a complete and utter waste of time to go and vote for Obama. It. will. not. matter.
In the 2 years I’ve been following CCK, this is the first day I’ve been incredibly pissed off to read yet more ignorant comments about politics……on a chocolate blog for crying out loud.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Thanks, Cindy! I’m in TX too… I think it is ridiculous that people in certain parts of this country have more say in the election than people in others. Aren’t we all supposed to be equal? The electoral college is antiquated, and I’d love to see it replaced. But since it doesn’t look like that’ll happen any time soon, I might just have to move to Florida ;).
Andie says
Hi Katie! This looks super yummy! (and creative!) this is kinda random/not relevant to this post, but I had a quick question: how do you usually freeze “bulk” meals like soups/meals? I’ve been a vegan for only about a year (I’m 15) and my family all eats meat, so usually I’m on my own for cooking, and it would be really helpful to know the easiest ways to freeze meals to eat later! Thank you so much, I love your blog!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I just freeze in pyrex containers, in individual servings. Take a serving out and microwave or re-heat on the stove. 🙂
Andie says
Thank You! 🙂
Rebekah says
Thanks for posting this recipe! I’ve been disappointed in the vegan white chocolate chips that you can mail-order, so I will definitely be trying these!
I voted by mail last week – fun election in Washington state, got to vote yes on marriage equality and I’m pretty sure it is going to pass!!
Rachel says
Yay for referendum 74! 🙂
Ali @ WHOLEistically Fit says
I’m also not much of a white “chocolate” girl. Heck, I’m not even a milk chocolate kind of girl anymore. I’m all about the super dark chocolate. These look great, though! Perfect for when a recipe calls for white chocolate chips. Thanks! 😀
kaity @ kaityscooking says
you have just made my day! you dont no howwwww many recipes i have seen that call for some white chocolate and i am just to lazy to order it online and wait for it lol im soooo making a big batch of these to have around for the holidays im so excited! dumb ? though where do i get cocoa butter is it like in whole foods probably? lol
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Yeah, or order online.
Lia says
Great work Katie! I always have trouble finding these veganized, and my traditional Christmas cookie recipe uses white chocolate, which I always want to make vegan, and now I can more consistently!
Angela Guptill says
Thanks Katie for this recipe 🙂 btw, only Americans call koalas “bears” Aussie take great offense at this.
Dani Sequoia says
Katie – when you make a batch with powdered sugar, how much do you use, personally?
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
It really is a matter of taste on this one. I had a few different people try each experiment, and some would say one batch was too sweet, while others liked it that way. So you really just have to try it to know how much you prefer. I’d recommend using just a little to begin with, as you can add more easily than you can take away.
Claire says
Cool! I would never have thought of making my own white chocolate. Looks good 🙂
Sally - only gluten free baking says
I had to laugh at this because I always argue that white chocolate isn’t real chocolate. I’m sure you’ve made a lot of people really happy today, I should make some of this for my brother who loves the unhealthy version. Thank you for a lovely post as always.
Sally - only gluten free baking says
I left my comment before reading through all the others today. Wow you guys do take voting very seriously. Its great to see people so passionate about the future of their country. In Australia we vote for a prime minister and they just randomly get kicked out, now thats a joke. I saw the funny side of it though Katie, my parents have been saying the same thing for years about cancelling each other out.
Camille says
Fun Fact: for something to be legally labeled as “white chocolate” for sale in the US it has to be made with cocoa butter. I always hated “white chocolate” because I associated it with the icky fake stuff (see: Nestle’s “White Morsels.” So clever! It never occurred to me that they weren’t chocolate!). Now that I eat the real deal, I love it! Thanks so much for reminding me that I wanted to make it, and where to find cocoa butter!
Fawn says
I just fell in love with you. I have a whole bag full of raw cacao butter that I bought to make one single recipe and havent known what to do with it since then. Thank you for posting this recipe!
Emily @ www.main-eats.com says
Yummy! Brilliant idea!
narf7 says
Hi Katie…for some reason I really REALLY thought that you were American/Canadian! Sorry about that! ;). I have been reading your blog for ages now and kept thinking that you were American! I used to get soy milk powder in sachets in woolies. You may still be able to get it on the mainland but not here in Tasmania…but you can’t get spring roll wrappers here in Tasmania either (sigh…) Again, sorry about the idea that you were American ;). Have you tried coconut cream/milk powder in your chocolate? Maggi makes one that I think they still sell in Woolies. If you head off to an Asian food shop you should be able to find heaps of varieties of soymilk “drink” they call it but its just sweetened soymilk powder. Where are you in Aus? I come from W.A. but live in Tassie now 🙂
Stella says
Huh, where did you get that from that she is NOT from the US?!
narf7 says
Because she emailed me and told me that she wasn’t Stella…that’s why 😉
Stella says
Well that wasn’t apparent from your post. However, if she’s voting now she has to have the american citizenship or am I wrong?!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Uh oh… I did? Now I’m confused. 😕
I don’t think I emailed you… I AM American.
Nicole says
I think she’s getting confused by my earlier response! I’m Australian, not Katie!
Amber with Slim Pickin's Kitchen says
What a super cute idea! Where did you get your cocoa butter? I was actually looking into buying some the other day.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Whole Foods, but you can also order online if you can’t find it at WF.
Karina says
Instead of milk powder I found that you could use Coconut Milk Powder instead. But then it is a good idea to add some lecithin, so the mixture doesn’t separate.
I got the idea some month ago, but I have also used your coconut butter “chocolate” recipe sometimes. (the one with the candy in it – yum)
Sara says
I am a HUGE fan of your blog! I will definitely have to make these, but I was wondering if you had any plans on making peanut butter chips?
Thanks for all the awesome recipes!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Yes! Already made, actually. Just need to take photos and post :).
Lucy @ Lucys Fit Life says
Awesome idea! Actually have a big lump of cocoa butter I’ve never really played with, might be an excuse to bust it out.
Rachel says
Can you let us know how much sweetener you used? “To taste” makes me nervous 🙂 I always add too much, and then you can’t take it out!
Thanks so much for this recipe, I lovvved white chocolate but can’t bring myself to pay for the vegan kind!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says

I’m with Rachel on the “to taste” thing! lol What is just a little? 1tbs, cup, tsp? I burn Easy Mac, so I hope you can understand my apprehension to “just winging it” per say. :p hahahahaha

I wish we had a whole foods. I have no idea where to get hold of Cocoa butter 🙁
Lori@ Announce It says
I like white chocolate every once in a while, just to change things up a bit on the taste buds. Thanks for making it vegan!
Pixie says
Oh, my! People take what bloggers say much too seriously. lol I’m sorry you were attacked for your voting comments. (I thought they were funny!) I guess if we’re going to be in a public forum we have to grow thicker skin and/or feathers like a duck to let things roll off of our backs like water.
The first time I ever tasted white chocolate was one Easter when my mother put a white lamb in my basket. At first I thought it was heresy!! But she just said to taste it. While I’m sure the white chocolate in a cheapy little Easter lamb wasn’t high quality or anything, it didn’t matter. I fell in love with it! I’ve missed it very much. I will have to try making some of this if I can find cocoa butter locally. I’m hoping like crazy that it tastes like I remember!
Thanks for your hard work on this website. And remember that there are those of us who understand what you are trying to say. 🙂

I worked my tail off for the past four days for my candidate. 18 HOUR DAYS!!! and I’m a teen, i need sleep 🙂 It saddens me to read how some people take the right to vote for granted. Do you have any idea how many people have fought and died for this freedom? We are SO blessed to live here and it just INFURIATES me. Don’t wanna vote? try go living somewhere where they can’t and would kill to have that freedom. So please watch what you say.
p.s.- not directed at the joke 🙂 just at other commenters I disagree with.
Nicole says
Enough.
Sarah the official CCK drooler @RomneyRyan2012 says
I’m sorry, it’s an opinion in what what (until last night) used to be a free country. I would appreciate your acknowledgment of that. and it is NOT enough when your country has fallen into the hands of liberal morons and buffoons who have no concept of freedom or liberty. I hate to be political, but the truth hurts. and that’s that.
I’m done 🙂
Kayla says
It was a free country until last night? That doesn’t even make sense. Barack Obama has been in office for the past four years!
Nousha says
how is it freedom if voting is a duty…there are some who find no major difference between obama or romney and consider that neither parties have their needs in mind. Yes we fought for freedom, and we won our freedom, meaning Katie has the FREEDOM to write what she wishes in her blog whether it is a joke or not just as you had the FREEDOM to express your unnecessary opinion on a food blog, and just as Americans have the FREEDOM to take advantage of their oppurtunity and right to vote for the party that they feel best represents this countries wants and needs. I understand if you are not happy about obama winning (I sure as hell am) but I hope you do not spend the next four years bashing every single person who says things like not choosing to vote. Please watch what YOU say
Sarah the official CCK drooler @RomneyRyan2012 says
Excuse me, I was not directing this @Katie at all, and I thought I made that clear. I have many times supported Katie for her freedom to say what she wishes. like duh, it’s her blog. and it’s the FREEDOM of speech- something this president (or his followers) doesn’t get. When you have freedom of speech, it should be for both sides. this had nothing to do with obama…just I get mad to think how many of my military friends are going through in order to keep the freedom of a bunch of liberal ingrates. My relatives live in Saudi Arabia and when they found out people here CHOOSE not to vote, they were bewildered. it’s a civic duty. yes, a duty. all I’m saying is, be proud to that you have this right and excercise it for God’s sake. And maybe try studying up on our founding documents. adios, seeya in 2016 when America is no more thanks to your guy.
Aurélie says
Nothing beats dark chocolate!! (Just wanted to make sure I remained on the Dark Chocolate Side) I’m glad to have a healthy white chocolate recipe though, thank you!
Dixya @ Food, Pleasure and Health says
I had never even thought about making about my own white chocolate chips. you are such a genius. I am not much of a white chocolate person either but occasional macadamia nuts with white chocolate chip cookies.
Mannu says
I was wondering if I could make dark chocolate chips by adding cocoa powder to the recipe .Also, do the chips hold their shape in baking ( cookies ).
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
They do! Not sure about adding chocolate… if you try, let me know 🙂

People.. This is a FOOD blog. Not a political or technical fact blog. FOOD. Everyone getting upset at her joke about not voting seriously needs to pull the stick out of their butts. This is KATIE’S blog. She can say whatever she wants too. If she wrote a post on how she put Willy Wonka in the right in space, thats okay! That’s what blogs are for! If voting wasn’t important to her (from what she said, anyone with half a brain can see she planned to vote.) She has every right to say so. Because in this country not only do we have the right to vote, we also have the right to free speech! So Suck it, haters.
Anyway Katie, looks delicious. I’m totally craving dark and white chocolate dipped strawberries! Thanks for the recipe!
Stella says
Freedom of speech goes both ways, just saying 🙂
Fawn says
Has anyone considered that it might be in good taste at this point to just stop talking about all things political just for the sake of showing respect for the person that provides this amazing blog (and other readers)?
Just and idea – not pointed at anyone poster specifically – pointed at ALL those who want to continue to discuss politics after the topic is already exhausted here.
Sometimes we must remember, just because we can – doesnt always mean we should.

Do you know where to find cacoa butter? Is it something you can buy at any old supermarket, or do you need to go to Whole Foods or another health store to get it?
By the way, I never knew vegan white chocolate was possible!!!!
Moni @ {Moni Meals} says
SUCH a good idea! I love white chocolate… or is it! Haha 😉
Merissa says
I was so excited to make this, but it just wasn’t that good. I’m bummed. I found some cocoa butter at my health food store and followed your recipe…but I was unsure how much sugar to add. The cocoa butter was very strong tasting- I felt a bit like I was eating sweetened lotion. Should I try this again with the brand you recommend, or is the flavor of this recipe different from traditional white chocolate? I am wondering if I should add a bit more powdered milk next time. Did you experiment with doing that?
PS- Thanks for this great blog! I love cooking healthier versions of all these sweets!
Kina says
Uh oh. Since you mentioned it tasted like lotion, it sounds like you accidentally bought the kind of cacao butter you’re supposed to use on your skin, not the food grade one. Don’t look in the vitamin section, look in the raw food section. That could make a difference!
Merissa says
No- it was food grade. In the baking section.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Hmmm… I don’t think the brand should matter. I really thought mine tasted like white chocolate :-?. Did you try the macadamia butter version? Maybe that would take away some of the cacao butter taste?
Jessica says
SO EXCITED!!!
I made a batch to go in my favorite oatmeal raisin cookie recipe. I replaced the raisins with 1/2 cranberries and 1/2 of these white chocolate chips, and OMG! It worked!!! You have made this vegan very very happy!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Shannon says
Ok. I really want this to work.
I couldn’t get the ingredients to bind. They kept separating.
Help?
Fawn says
I had the same trouble…. it seems like the vanilla extract didnt want to bind. I melted the cacoa butter, added the stevia (which seemed to go in just fine), then the extract, then the salt, then the powdered milk. some of it formed small (very small) clumps that sank to the bottom and never dissolved or intergrated into the cacoa butter. Its in the freezer chilling now… and we will see what it taste like.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
This is so weird, and I’m really sorry you both are having trouble :(. Fawn, how did yours turn out in the end?
Shannon, did you use the nut butter?
Anonymous says
I didn’t use the nut butter, but I’ll try again with it.
Thanks, Katie. I love your blog; It’s as addicting as your 3 ingredient chocolate. o_0
Shannon says
Well, the nut butter definitely helped to bind the ingredients. Now to taste them…
Thank you so much!
Jody says
if these sit out at room temp, will they melt? I was wondering if I could make puppy chow with them?? I cant do chocolate.. or white chocolate for that matter. 😛 Thanks
Jody says
Katie- can you please answer me??
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I haven’t tried it, but if you do, please report back. I would love to know.
Yes, they should be kept cold or they’ll melt… but puppy chow uses melted chocolate anyway, so I don’t see why that should be a problem.
Jody says
Well, chocolate gets hard again if it sits out. I am wondering if this stuff would also.
Jody says
Did my comment post ? Is this thing working?
Kim says
HOORAY! This a great way for me to finally make peppermint bark that my lactose-intolerant hubby can enjoy! Thanks!

Katie, you are the BEST! I made this white chocolate and used it to replace the white chocolate chips in my childhood favorite Cranberry Christmas Cookies. They were sooooooo good!
Michelle says
Love your blog! Thank you for sharing!! We recently went Gluten free/casein free for our son. So this will be an awesome addition to our baking supplies! One question though…where did you find the “chip” mold for making your own chips? I would love to try this for my kiddos!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Hobby Lobby
Kristen says
Hi Katie, I am excited to try this recipe. Do you know if I make this in bulk, let the candy harden and re-melt, will the chocolate hold up? If so, how should I store it? The plan is to make a big batch and have it handy anytime I want to make chocolate “dipped” things, instead of making each time.. Like a bag of white chocolate chips.
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I would store it in the fridge :).

Hi all,
I was wondering if you could use malt powder instead of milk powder in this recipe?
Plez&&Thank-u 🙂
Chocolate Covered Katie says
Sorry, I’ve never tried so I really don’t know.
Amber says
So is it calcium in milk powder that helps keep the consistency like traditional whitte chocolate? I don’t currently have rice or soy milk powder, but was curious about alternatives (I saw coconut milk powder commented, but didn’t want to be missing an important compositional element..). In the past I made pudding with pre-packaged mix, almond milk and simply crushed calcium to help bond the pudding together. Not sure if this is at all the same thing, but love the idea of this recipe.
teri says
Hi Katie,
Where did you ever find those little molds for the “chips”? I’ve been looking everywhere online, and all the molds I’ve seen look too big for chocolate chips. Thanks. I love your blog!

Hello, just wondering if you could advise me a little please. When i make white chocolate I use the same ingredients but the chocolate is always so powdery when set. How do you overcome this? Does it take quite a long time to dissolve the powders in the chocolate?
Any help very appreciated
Thanks
BC says
You could always try using coconut milk or cream instead of milk powder.
I haven’t tried it myself but plan on doing so.
Shobana says
Hi Katie,
Is there any replacement for cocoa butter? I have seen someone mentioned coconut milk as a replacement for cocoa butter.
Wendy says
No. The cocoa butter is what makes it chocolate. You could get white baking chips without cocoa butter but then they would have all of the hydrogenated oils and additives that that we are trying to avoid by making our own. The coconut milk powder is a replacement for powdered milk. I have seen some recipes for a bark made with coconut oil in some paleo cookbooks. It looks white but I have never tasted it, it also has to be kept in the freezer I think since coconut oil has such a low melting point. Good luck!
Cathy says
Hi there,
Anyone know if I use this recipe as the base for moulding chocolate?
And if I can just go straight from the mixing stage of this recipe, into the melted mixing stage of preparing moulding chocolate?
Or do I need to set this recipe first & then start the moulding chocolate from scratch….
Thanks in advance for any advice 🙂
jo says
I’m needing a gluten free and dairy free white chocolate so this vegan recipe is ideal. However, I need to melt it and dip cake pops in it, and have it harden again. Would this work, do you think? Thanks in advance!
Adrienne says
How well does this melt?
Katie M. says
Hi Katie. I know your recipe was originally posted a couple of years ago so hoping you still can respond. I am a white chocolate artist and have an interest in trying your pure version recipe. However I am unsure after reading several of your posts whether you attempted to “mold” this chocolate. I do seasonal gift chocolate (white) in the winter and it is my goal to investigate a way to create a healthy version that can be molded…what are your thoughts??? Thanks so much…Katie M.
Ingrid says
Hi Katie,
Thanks for giving me the ideas for ingredients I needed to make my own white chocolate spread. I dissolve whey isolate in water, then stir it into some (salt and sugar) free peanut butter. This means the protein powder can be dissolved, thus avoiding the grainy feel of powder in end product, and the peanut butter acts as the emulsifier for the water based protein solution and the coconut oil I use instead of cocoa butter. I then add honey, stevia and natural caramel essence for flavour, and liquid coconut oil to make it more solid. I store it in the fridge of course, which preserves it and gives it the right consistency.

Whyte choco be healthee for realz!
Chek out the health benefitz:
http://perfecthealthdiet.com/2014/03/white-chocolate/
Dark chocolate sometimes contains mycotoxins and aflatoxins (which can be carcinogenic, depending on dose), whereas white chocolate doesn’t. While cocoa butter doesn’t have nearly as many health benefits as dark chocolate, it’s been shown to benefit platelet function and potentially atherogenesis more than dark chocolate (in men, but not in women…why must you be so confusing science?).
Wendy says
Hi Katie,
I love your site. I know that this comment section became VERY contriversial. But could you please edit the comments to food related? I just spent about 10 minutes going through the comments to find out why my chocolate was separating. I didn’t use the nut butter, just cacao butter, powdered sugar, powdered milk, and vanilla. My son is allergic to soy so we cannot use commercial white chocolate. I am thinking that the nut butter works as an emulsifier like the soy lecithin. I know that they make lecithin from sunflower since it is in my protien powder so it may be in other nut butters too. I know that sunflower is not a nut but they may have similar properties. Heck, I add dijon mustard to my balsalmic vinegrette as an emulsifier. Just wouldn’t taste good in white chocolate :-). I’m going to rewarm my chocolate and add in a bit of cashew butter. (It’s what I have in the fridge) Thanks for the recipe and all of the other great ones that you share.
Lilli Winter says

Hi Katie, I knew there had to be a healthy dairy-free white chocolate recipe out there, no surprise that it was on your blog! I’ve ordered some cocoa butter from Amazon and my food co-op is ordering in some soy milk powder (Now Foods) for me. I’m excited to give it a try!
Myra says
Well I tried your recipe and after a long time of gathering the ingredients and waiting for that special moment, I finally made them. I was very pleased. The taste was fabulous. I would probably use this recipe for no-bakes rather than say, cookies, as the cacao butter melted into my cookies and made them extra ‘buttery’ rather than keeping that solid chip effect I was after. Maybe those big conglomerate chocolate chip cookie companies know a thing or two about having your chip and eating it in a cookie too!
Anna says
Here’s some magic why adding liquids to cocoa butter will never work – butter (even cocoa) is hydrophobic which ultimately means you won’t be able to get the chocolaty texture 🙂 Where can I get vegan milk powder? I’ve been looking all over the internet and no success 🙁

do you think coconut milk powder would work? I’m hoping it would be the same principal as replacing the milk powder with rice milk powder or soy milk powder. Plus, coconut milk is pretty creamy normally.
I can’t have grains nor nuts since I’m on the AIP diet to keep my autoimmune disease in remission and I’m dying for something white chocolate

Been looking for a white chocolate recipe for ever! I just tried it. Used protein powder, and sunflower butter. But after mixing, it was really dry. Could it be the powdered sugar? I stuck it back into the microwave and hoped for the best. Not sure if it’s supposed to be like that. This IS my first time using coconut butter so I’m not sure what I did wrong. Help!

Hi! I was wondering if these could be melted and put into like a vegan cheesecake to make it a white chocolate cheesecake? Great recipes btw!! 😀

How much white chocolate does this make? It sounds like it just makes ¼ cup, which isn’t very much. This is the first time I’ve been to your site, but I really appreciate this recipe. I’m Type 1 diabetic, and I was diagnosed at 37. I miss my white chocolate mochas and was looking for a way to make a sugar free version of my own coffee syrups at home. Many of the other flavors are easy to make, but white chocolate is more of pain because of the ingredients. I cannot wait to try this out and incorporate the chips into a white chocolate syrup recipe. If I remember to, I’ll let you know how it turns out. I’m not making any promises though, lol. I have a tendency to be absent-minded. ;D

Would whole powdered goat milk work?

I haven’t tried these yet. I love white chocolate macadamia cookies, but I find them too sweet. Are these as sweet and can the sweetness be adjusted?

I am not sure if you meant cacao butter or cocoa butter. Which is it?

I was wondering….would it be possible to smash the white chocolate recipe with the chocolate chip recipe and come up with a milder “milk” chocolate? I’m waiting for my chocolate chip silicone shape to come in, then must give it a try!

Hi Katie,
I have made vegan white chocolate before and found that it doesn’t hold up during baking…would your version work in a cookie?
Thanks!

I’m interested in knowing that too
