This has been one of my most popular recipes with readers over the years, and for good reason.

If you’ve never heard of Fudge Babies, they’re basically raw and paleo chocolate truffles made without any added sugars, oil, or processed ingredients, and they’re pretty much impossible to stop eating.

The recipe is one of the easiest healthy desserts you’ll ever try.

Fudge Babies will always have a special place in my heart because, long before the Chickpea Cookie Dough Dip or the Black Bean Brownies came onto the scene, this was actually the first one of my recipes to ever go viral!

Fudge Babies come in all sorts of different flavors, such as Thin Mint, German Chocolate, and Chocolate Peanut Butter.

You can roll them into balls, cut out shapes with cookie cutters, or even form them into bars to make your own homemade Larabars, for a healthy snack any time you’re craving chocolate.

You can also roll them in coconut flour if you want to make your own homemade Larabar Bites.

And because they don’t need to be refrigerated, they’re great for any of the following:

Packing in a lunchbox

Making a batch to give as a gift

Shipping to family or friends

Taking as a healthy on-the-go snack

fudge baby batter

So why highlight the Fudge Babies again now?

Well first of all, the recipe is way too good to be lost in the archives.

If you have just 5 minutes, I highly recommend making a batch.

They are ridiculously fun to make and even more fun to eat.

Especially with Valentine’s Day around the corner, chocolate Fudge Babies are the perfect recipe, because they are both heart healthy and sinfully decadent and chocolatey at the same time.

But even more importantly: On February 21st, at noon EST, I’ll be making these fudge babies live in the studio at the USA Today Headquarters!

**Edit: Above is the live footage from the USA Today Headquarters broadcast

No Bake Fudge Babies

I included a few flavor variations below, but the sky really is the limit.

Have fun coming up with your own Fudge Baby flavors by adding ingredients such as chia seeds, almond extract, shredded coconut, instant coffee, or anything else you think sounds good.

I’d love to see your variations, so please feel free to post a photo of your results in the comment section below, or tag me on Instagram @ChocolateCoveredKatie.

Fudge Babies – The Famous Recipe!

Total Time 5 minutes
No ratings yet

Ingredients

  • 1 cup walnuts or nuts of choice – Or here’s a Nut-Free Version
  • 1 1/3 cup pitted dates
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3-4 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder
  • optional just over 1/8 tsp salt
  • optional mini chocolate chips
  • optional add-ins such as chia seeds or shredded coconut

Instructions

  • *If your dates are super hard, just soak them in boiling water for a half hour. Most regular grocery stores carry dates; just be sure to buy them pitted. I usually add the salt, but it’s your choice!
Blend all ingredients in a food processor (or halve the recipe and use a single serve blender or mini chopper). When doing a full recipe, I’ve found that a food processor works much better than a blender because everything processes more evenly and the results are not a sticky mess. Roll into balls – I find it’s easiest to transfer the dough to a ziploc and smush it into one big ball, then break off pieces and roll into smaller balls. Feel free to dip in melted chocolate or roll in cocoa powder or shredded coconut or coconut flour. You can also form bars or even roll out the dough and cut shapes with cookie cutters!

    Variations:
Hot Chocolate Fudge Babies: 1/4 cup raw cashews or walnuts, loosely packed 2/3 cup pitted dates, 1 tbsp Dutch cocoa powder, pinch salt
Coconut Cookie Fudge Babies: loosely packed 2/3 cup pitted dates, 1 1/2 tbsp coconut butter, pinch salt
Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge Babies: 1/4 cup roasted peanuts (with salt), loosely packed 2/3 cup pitted dates, 1 tbsp cocoa, 1/8 tsp pure vanilla extract
And here’s a Cookie Dough Version!

    Eliza

  2. peanutbutterfingers says

those look fantastic!!! i bet they’d be a HUGE hit at a family party or thanksgiving… plus, they’re actually a great healthy lil’ snack! thanks for sharing such a yummy recipe.

  3. Abby says

Wow, Katie, those looks incredibly rich! I like how few ingredients there are AND that they are a lot cheaper than always buying lara’s and cliff’s! NICE WORK 🙂

  4. Anonymous says

Oh, yum! Raw energy balls are so delicious. I have never tried Nectar Clif bars but your variation looks amazing. Mmm… I’ll have to make some for our trip this weekend.

Do you think these fit in the category of liquids and gels or should I be able to take them on as food? I never know with American airport security – they scare me.

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

      Hey Anonymous,

Ugh, airport security can be ridiculous, right? I mean, I know they have good intentions, but how on earth can, say, a jar of peanut butter be a dangerous item? Well… I guess it’s dangerous because it’s so easy to eat the whole jar and OD ;).

But to answer your question, I don’t see how anyone could classify the chocolate balls (or bars, if that’s how you choose to shape them) as liquids. They’re definitely solid.

      Love,
      Katie

  5. jcd says

Oooh, my mouth is doing a happy dance just looking at those! I’ve never thought to add cocoa powder to raw energy balls before – you’re brilliant!

  6. vegancowgirl says

Katie! THanks for this recipe – I am SOOO making these this week. Love all of the ingredients. Also, wanted to say THANKS for the frozen grape idea…finally got around to doing it and LOVE the results.

  7. Nora says

I was gonna say, haha it’s unfortunately not okay to give homemade stuff to trick or treaters bc you look sketchy! the sad truth that giving homemade healthy snacks is seen as creepy while giving cruelty-laden crap full of corn syrup is friendly and normal. 🙁 they’d be great for a party though!

  8. Gina says

Mmm..so simple and so perfect. Reminds me of the Love Force bars I found a few weeks ago (but they are uber expensive).

I don’t have any dates though (I eat them all if they’re around), so I’ll have to pick some up for these because I have been super craving chocolate lately!!

  9. Bianca- Vegan Crunk says

First of all, I can’t believe they’re discontinuing Nectar bars!!! That blows!

But at least you made this awesome recipe to take their place. I’m seriously making these next raw day … if I can wait that long!

  10. Maria says

Ack, Katie, I knew you would make something this awesome (as always!). Sounds amazing, simple, and chocolate covered for sure 😀 Aka perfecto!

  11. maya says

THESE LOOK AMazing!!! i just had for snack like 10 minutes ago a clif nectar chocolate walnut bar, what a coincidence? 🙂 these look so good so easy to make!
mouth watering-ly chocolate-y-ness 😉 i am definatly making these asap! Cant wait! genus.

    xo
    maya

  12. Marina says

Damn it, I knew I forgot something 😀 I made those today, but with cashews and almonds, and a few cranberries. I forgot vanilla 🙂 And I made too little of it 🙁 But it’s delichttp://www.livelaugheat.com/2009/10/13/snacks-on-a-bed/#commentsious

  13. Runningwriter says

YUM! You are so clever. I just made these (using almonds though because I don’t have walnuts) and I didn’t even get to sit down with one because I kept sampling them as I rolled the balls. Delicious. And lucky for me my husband thinks nuts shouldn’t be mixed with chocolate so they’ll be all mine!!! 🙂

  14. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says

Yes great minds do think alike!!!!!!!!!
We have both created and posted a really similar recipe….within 12 hours of each other 🙂

My donut holes are just flax, maple, cocoa, vanilla.

But I also make my “raw vegan brownies” which I have tagged, but I make them in a sheet rather than bars…anyway, those are dates, walnuts, cocoa, agave. Very similar to these of yours, just how I shape them is a sheet not a ball. Cuz sometimes I am too impatient to roll into balls and just use bars instead 🙂

Great recipe from one chocolate un-baker to another!

    xoox

  15. Jenny R. says

you’re so creative!!! it’s so smart that you made these b/c you save so much $$ on bars by doing that…like you said. I’m gonna try them with carob and see how it goes. mmm cravings now…

  16. Kiersten says

I bet those are amazing! They’re similar to the homemade chocolate Larabars I posted about today, but in ball-form. Adding ground coffee to them is a great idea, I know I would LOVE that.

  17. Jenny says

WHY DO I NOT HAVE DATES IN MY HOUSE RIGHT NOW?! bahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I’m seriously considering heading to the grocery store just for the sake of making these. You’re killing me, smalls!

    • Eddie says

OMG these are delicious and my 6 year old loves them. I just made these twice this week. Once with walnut and once with almonds. I prefer the almonds. I mixed everything in my vitamix and then rolled into balls.

    • Joe Gannon says

Katie! Thank you so much for this recipe! These are so good! I’m glad I took the risk and made them. I bought a Cuisinart just for this. When my girlfriend asked me what I was doing in the kitchen I replied, “I’m just makin’ Babies!”
Though walnut is my favorite furniture making wood I much prefer almonds with my chocolate. Here in southern California it seems we have 2 types of dates: Medjool and Deglet Noor. I recently came upon a very good price on the DN dates at our local warehouse grocery which put them at half the price of the Medjool. However the DNs are too dry to use by themselves. My solution is to use half Medjool and half DN. If the Medjools are especially sticky I can use a smaller ratio of Medjool. All other amounts in the recipe remain the same. Other tips: you will need to run the processor for a bit- until the mix starts to ball up. Also, roll between your palms while the mix is still warm.
      These are so awesome!

  18. Jenna N says

    Hey Katie,
I’ve never commented before but I’ve been lurking your site for awhile now and decided to finally comment when I saw these amazing looking chocolate recipe 😀 When I get all these ingrediants i will defintelytry this! Would another nut besides walnuts work you think?

  19. Bekah says

These look so good! I love how cocoa makes everything more chocolatlely and delicious with almost zero added fat/calories. YUM! I will def have to try this recipe. Way to go again Miss Katie. 🙂

  20. Katharina says

OMG! You are seriously.. I love you! Not just because of the awesome food you make lol but also the way you write and just.. these ideas that come out of you! Like the ideas of what to do with them. BASKETBALL NET! ohhh yeah. I think I will do the eating contest.. my friends had one with mashed potatoes not too long ago. But I think they will love this!

    XO

  21. Michelle says

All hail thee. I tried, and failed, to recreate Nectars a little while ago. I used Gherideli chocolate instead of coco powder… BIG mistake. They were so strong, you could literally only take about one tiny bite. No good. I am throwing them out tonight, and tomorrow, will use your version. Thanks 🙂

  22. gina (fitnessista) says

    hey girl,
i MISSED YOU so! when i changed the bloggy, i added in google reader and put in your old address in there. i knew something was lacking in my life
those fudge babies look heavenly! i’ll be making them very soon
    have a great night!

  23. Anna says

Yowza those look good! I love my Jocolat/Larabars, but they are pricy on a college budget. Such a fantastic and easy alternative

Love the blog and your culinary ideas!

  24. Neela Marijana says

once again thsi looks fabulous! and i love how you included some measurements for us europena folks that get damn confused with the whole cups and oz business

  25. *Andrea* says

those look great!!! for a variation i might try adding cinnamon? not sure if they need any though, they look mighty delicious as is 😉

  26. Angela K. says

Those look delicious! I’d like to try ones with coffee and chocolate chips! They’d make a nice afternoon pick-me-up 😛

  27. Nicole says

When i read your blog yesterday i wrote down your recipe. I plan on making the plain fudgy ones! Please enter my name in your give-a-way! Good luck everyone!!

  28. Rachel says

These look AMAZING!! What a perfect snack/dessert. I would definitely go for the extreme chocoholic version, with a little bit of chili powder. I go crazy for spicy chocolate and I can imagine how insanely good these would be with some heat! 🙂

  29. Heather says

I would certainly like to try these! They look delightful. I’m thinking a mini mint carob chip fudge baby sounds absolutely purrrrrfect.

  30. Beth says

I think the “rolled in sugar” variation sounds heavenly! I know I’m entering this contest, but either way, I have GOT to make these myself.

  31. Kate says

I think I’m all about a mint variation. And in my head I’m trying to come up with a way to make them cookies and creme but I haven’t been able to work it out.

Love the almond joy idea on the post about me. Yummers!

  32. Lori says

I’ve got to get some walnuts and make these!! I think I would stick with your original recipe so as not to take away from the chocolate. YUM! After that maybe I would experiment with adding some peanut butter…

  33. Valerie says

They look delicious as they are! But I would love to try them with coconut mixed in, then rolled in coconut as well. YUM!

  34. Justine says

Thats exactly how I made my raw brownie pie!! Isnt it delish? I fed it to non health eating people and they had no idea it was raw or vegan or much healthier than a regular chocolate pie. They loved it!! I think I might make one for Thanksgiving 🙂

    ~Justine

  35. Melissa says

Oh. My. Gosh. These look great! I’m in the midst of a chocolate craving right now so I will be making these very soon! Thanks for sharing!

  36. Sünne says

Oooooooh, I’d really like a version with mint extract! I used to love After Eight but haven’t found a vegan version yet.

  37. LZ says

Ooh those sound so good… a variation I’d love to try is with melted dark chocolate and chopped dried cherries mixed in!

  38. Pure2Raw Twins says

Wow great job… they look yummy and fudgy! Just the way I like them. I am a little obsessed with raw desserts 🙂

  39. Ariel says

I can’t wait to make these to share with my roommates! I wonder how the consistency would be with a ripe banana blended in– I’m imagining a raw vegan version of my mom’s recipe for cocoa-banana muffins.

  40. Heatherkind says

Ohhhh coconut flavored ones sound SO freaking good. You just made my mouth water KAtie. These look amazing!
    -Heather

  41. Mandie says

yummm these look so good! congrats on another deliciously inventive recipe 🙂 all of them sound good to me to be honest. i think the one with coffee might be my first choice (but really, do i *have* to choose… it’s just too hard) for a mocha flair. did you think of adding mint extract? i think that might be a nice addition to the list. i’ve always been a bit partial to mint. or maybe banana? okay, i know that sounds weird, but c’mon, i just tried your banana brulee idea and i can’t stop thinking about bananas =p.

  42. Heather Eats Almond Butter says

For me?!?! Oh my gosh, so excited. Clearing out a hiding place right now so CD doesn’t find them. 😉

    LOVE YOU KATIE!

  43. Sarah says

What a difficult choice?! I might have to choose coffee so they would serve double-duty of being yummy and giving me a caffeine boost to help me through some grad-school late nights!

You’re the best with all of these giveaways… one of these days I’ll win and I’ll think you’re even beter 😛

  44. Michal says

These look amazing tasty and way simple too! I would love to try a little bit of coconut oil or flavoring with raisins. Is that a weird combo? For some reason that combination sounds amazing to me at the moment 🙂

  45. Jenny R. says

is it too late?? I would love to try some chocolate-banana-pb babies. Chocolate monkey babies… can we call them that?

  46. Chelsea says

Hm…. I think these look so good, I’m going to have to make some RIGHT NOW! I’ll have to use pecans since I don’t have walnuts (and my mom is allergic). Ah! I’m so excited to eat these!

  47. Laura E says

I would love if they had mint extract in them!! Thanks so much for the opportunity 🙂 Do you think a mini food processor would work if I cut the recipe in half?

  48. Tiffany says

Oh my gosh fudge babies with coconut sounds like the most AMAZING food to me! I will be making these regardless of if I win anyway 😀

  49. lora says

i think i just died for a moment. stopped breathing because these are the bomb diggity, no doubt. Can I have some mint ones pretty please 😉

    xoxo
    your fav LoLo

  50. Becky says

Mmmmmm! They look so decadent! I would love love love some with maybe coconut or some nuts? I don’t think you can go wrong with these babies.

Now I won’t have to miss my FAVORITE Clif Nectar bar 🙂

  51. Kat says

I think coconut would be delicious! But maybe even some hemp butter or almond butter in the center… or raspberry jam in the center, like a truffle… the possibilities are truly endless!

  52. Kerri says

OMG – YUM YUMMY YUM!!!! Those look SO GOOD! I would have to say ExTreMe ChOcOhoLic – because, ummm, I am one! 🙂

  53. Halleh says

Wow. I love that the ingredients are so simple in this. They are similar to the energy bars that are in The Thrive Diet book by Brenden Brazier.

I’m dreaming dreams of trying a peanut butter chocolate version.

Thanks Katie for all you do!

  54. Devan Newman says

I think peppermint would be amazing with these:D

or orange… adding orange zest.. and soaking the dates in OJ prior to blending them with the nuts and cocoa.
    . woah, delish!

chili and lavender would be nice flavors as well 🙂

  55. Natalie says

Katie, I don’t know if you read my post about the mint Jocalat bars, but something that makes me sad about Clif Nectar (besides the idea of them being discontinued) is that they didn’t have a Chocolate Mint bar. I would LOVE chocolate mint fudge babies! pick me pick me 🙂

  56. Vanilla says

    Yes! Another giveaway!!!

I’m soooo happy you have a Cashew version now, they’re my fave nut ever 🙂

Now…to enter the giveaway: I would love to try
    – a cashew version, with a hint of coffee (if I have money to spend, I’ll put some Bailey’s…muahaha!)
    – or a peanut version (we can call them Reese’s babies!)

  57. Chocolate-Covered Katie says

    Hey Ann,
You can easily figure it out: Just add up all the calories of each individual item. They’re pretty comparable, gram for gram, to regular larabars. Sorry I can’t offer you specific numbers. I CAN tell you that you shouldn’t feel as guilty indulging in these as you would a normal truffle made with cream cheese and other such ingredients. (That being said, don’t eat the whole recipe in one sitting if you’re on a diet lol!)

  58. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says

I like the 2 to 1 ration of dates to nuts. That’s what I always do when I am making things that I want to stick together. And then cocoa powder. And nothing gets past the agave squirt mania with me 🙂

  59. Marianne says

I think I need to get some dates asap. What kind did you use? Regular, medjool…just curious 🙂

    Mmmm…fudgy balls.

  60. trustingmyintuition says

OMG I am so making these this week. I’ll do half cashew cookie and half fudge baby. Or maybe I’ll just make two batches! 😉

  61. Hannah says

Made these yesterday with some mint extract. The flavor was slightly reminiscent of a girl scouts thin mint. Gonna try them with cinnamon next. Hot damn! Who needs cookies when you can have fudge babies? 😀

  62. Vendela says

I just made (and featured this on my cooking site) these this morning. OMFG. I once tried making avocado based “truffles” similar to these, but oh no… they were not good. These are purely fantastic. Thank you!

  63. Liz says

Yum! I made the original version and a cashew-date version. These are delicious! I’m having visions of breakfast tomorrow…oat bran topped with a couple of these gems!!

    Thanks!

  64. Katie says

I just made both versions of these. All I can say is THANK YOU CCV!!! I will never need to spend money on another Larabar again!

Your Cashew Cookie version tasted JUST like a cashew cookie larabar! And the chocolate ones were so amazing too! So rich and sinful tasting!

You are so right. EVERYONE needs to

    Make.
    These.
    NOW!

  65. Brooke says

oh my goodness. these are delish! I made them 2 days in a row. Being vegan, I haven’t been able to enjoy most of the halloween candy my sister brought home. But who needs halloween candy when you have these babies! I made a variation with 2/3 walnuts and 1/3 golden flax seeds. They made these fudgy treats nice and crunchy. next time, I’m gonna add a packet of starbucks via. 😀 yummy!

  66. hotflashbang says

Oh my word!! I made these little babies for HEAB’s POM Covered Kindness contest and all I can say is A-MAZ-ING… seriously.. I’ve never done “raw” before and (smack smack) these lil babies are the bomb! Thanks for sharing… both the recipe and your charity!
    Annie

  67. tiffanie says

I just totally whipped these up. Took me all of 5 minutes and now I’m sitting in chocolate bliss! Oh my goodness!!! ARE you SURE it’s okay to eat these??? I just ate 4 and could totally eat 40 more! WOW. So good.

I’m going to post this on my blog….with of course credit to you! Awesome stuff.

I’m so going to use this as a base for the next pie I make! So good!

  68. deb says

yeah, they are incredible and addictive!! any idea what the calorie count is? I just whipped up a batch and I’m in love. seriously.

  69. Cynthia K says

Hi Katie, I just made these for the first time and my 20-month old daughter loves loves LOVES them. I made her some Fudge Baby ‘babies’ (raisin-sized FB’s) and she was going through her whole cutesy routine to get another one and another one! I thought they were good too…and I even left some for the hubbie for his snack tonight. Next time I’m making some coffee fudge babies! Thanks for the recipe!

    • Jesse says

Hi! I just made them too, but I have a bowl full of (delicious) crumbles 🙂

How did you get them to stick together? Also, how do you store them? Do they need the fridge?

      • Unofficial CCK Helper says

Put the crumbles in a bag and smush together very hard. They will stick together. Refer to other comments on this post to see about storing information.

  70. Tanya says

Ok, I just tried these fudge babies and wow…..they are SOOO good. I like the slightly bitter edge the cocoa gives it, rather than using actual pieces of chocolate. And of course, my husband loves them too! Hmmmm, which version to try next??

  71. Michelle says

CCK, these are DIVINE! Just thought I’d tell you again in case you’d forgotten. I just made the original fudge babies, and my two year old and four year old ate more than I did! Yippee! I am going to have to break down and order some Artisana Cocoa Bliss to try my ultimate guilty pleasure – coconut and chocolate YUUMMMMYY!! You are amazing.

  72. Laura B says

These would definitely be the first fudge babies I would try if I were to win a vita-mix, but I’d probably start with some delicious almond butter.. I’ve always wanted to make my own!

  73. Jenessa says

As a choco-holic, this would be the first fudge baby recipe that I’d try in my vita-mix. After that, carrot ginger soup!

  74. Sarah says

I think I’d def have to try some soup first…creamy potato soup!

Now that I’ve looked at the hot cocoa fudge babies again though I might need to go the dessert route. 🙂

  75. Melanie says

Wow, I would totally make some fudge babies in a vitamix! These look delicious!

Then I’d make ice cream, soup, green smoothies, cashew butter – omg. Everything.

  76. Candyce says

The Hot Cocoa Fudge Babies sound incredible. I’ve been lusting after a Vitamix since I tried the Happy Foody Green Smoothie challenge with my blender, and everything was chunky and watery. It was far from delicious. I know I would’ve done better with the Vitamix! Thank you so much!

  77. Anna says

If I had a vita mix I would make this recipe first. Add a little bit of coconut and a Tbsp of pumpking to smooth it out for a delicious treat. To finish you could roll them in cocoa nibs/coconut shavings. YUMMM!!!!!

  78. Shannon says

Oh the things I would make if I had a Vitamix… The very first thing I would make is Chocolate Chip Lavender Ice Cream. I have never owned the proper equipment to make homemade ice cream, and I find the combination of lavender and chocolate to be heavenly. I might even scoop a little out (pre-chocolate chips of course) to share with my pup.

  79. Bernadette says

Where do I begin? I am torn between classic strawberry non-ice cream (made with frozen strawberries, rice milk, vanilla extract and agave—my 4 year old son LOVES making it with me and indulging in it, of course, but our blender turns it into a bit of a strawberry soup–not bad, but it could be better) or some serious vegetable soup. I read one ad for the Vita-Mix that stated I could cram a ton of raw vegetables into the Vita-Mix and it would churn out hot soup! Hot! Soup! In Minutes! I am dying to try that.

  80. Alisha says

i’d make a green smoothie first thing!
i have a rather cheap processor and it doesnt blend my veggies that well.
ive been trying to incorporate more veggies into my diet so a green smoothie would be the perfect way to do just that!

  81. Christina says

I just made your originals (for breakfast…).

    I know what’s in them…but there’s no way they’re healthy.

    They’re. Too. Good. 😛

  82. Sandi says

If I had a vitamix I would have to make a big green smoothie with kale, spinach, avocado, frozen banana…and kabocha? Would that be weird? Mmmm smoothie…

  83. Sallie says

Well I finally tried these yesterday… Crap, I love them so much. So easy. So good. One of these + shot of espresso = heaven AND the perfect snack. Wow, wow, wow. <3 I will be making these again… and again… and again……..!!

  84. Gwen says

I think I finally figured out how to enter the VitaMix giveaway correctly — and the first thing I would make in my VitaMix is one of the soup recipes from Ad Hoc At Home. Thomas Keller is a big proponent of the VitaMix!

  85. Betty says

These are delicious (I’ve been making something similar, including once with a big stone mortar and pestle while studying abroad)! In all likelihood, my first Vita-mix creation would be something mundane like a smoothie, but with that kind of power, I could finally try making some serious dosa batter!

I found your blog last night and made these fudge babies today!

I posted them as the first post on my blog and linked back to here!

    http://vegediaries.blogspot.com/

These tasted so good! I only found that they were dry so I added some rice milk and it made them easier to roll them into the little balls 😀

rebecca at rcakewalk just forwarded me this link: we’ve both been making date cookies lately! anyway, i love the larabars and have thought i should try make them myself, its true they have so few ingredients. once i even bought the ingredients for but i had so little willpower i just ate everything before i had time to make them! glad to find your recipe.

  88. Sonia says

jimminy christmas. I just made these with almonds, dates, coconut oil, coco powder, 1 frozen bananna and a drop of almond milk….and can i say, THANK YOU!!! Going to take these to easter brunch as an alternative to bitting the heads of of chocolate bunnies 🙂 Thank you again!! <3 love love love these! (I made about 10 of them, and there are 2 left lol)

  89. Lori says

This looks like an awesome recipe, Katie. I’d love to try it, but I wonder if you could edit your post to add some preparation notes? I use a Vitamix (vitaprep 3) and I’m sure it can handle the dough, but is there a certain knack to blending these for optimal results? Like do you do the nuts first and then add the dates, or do you throw everything in at once? I know from my experiments with nut butters that having the right technique when using the blender makes ALL the difference. Anyway, I’d be grateful for any added prep info you (or your readers) could provide before I have a go at it.

  90. Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Duly noted, Lori! I updated for ya!! 🙂
You don’t need to worry about blending any one ingredient first. I just throw it all in at the same time (unless I’m making cookie dough bites and want the chips to remain un-blended).

I’ve actually never used the Vita for it; just the Magic Bullet. But a lot of others use their Vitas. I guess it’s a pretty forgiving recipe (i.e. it’s hard to mess up… you can’t go wrong with chocolate!).
If you ever have any other questions, please feel free to ask! Or check out the Fudge Baby FAQ page:

  91. Lori says

Thanks, Katie! I will definitely give these a try…with some crystallized ginger added for some added zip 🙂

  92. Alex says

I would just like to say that I am SO happy and grateful you created these. My life has just been brightened considerably. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. really. I have to hide them from the rest of my family, they love them so much. 🙂

  93. A Teenage Gourmet says

I’ve tried a few recipes for homemade Lara bars, yours is the best ratio or date to nut! The other ones just made my processor a sticky mess. Thank you! I’m going to post about them sometime soon.

  94. Yoli says

Hello, can someone give my the gram conversion for the updated version of the fudge babies? I I am trying to make these but don’t know how much is 30 grams of cashew and 80 grams of dates. 1Tbls Cocoa verses the 4 on the previous recipe?? Thanks you help.

  95. Sina says

I made this for my kids two days in a row. My daughters helped me make the 2nd batch tonight and they kept eating the dough before they made it into balls. When I was done making all of the balls, my 3 year-old asked me, “Mommy can I lick your fingers?” They love this stuff! Thank you so much for the recipe.

  96. Diana says

WOW! I just made these and fell in L-O-V-E! I eat Jocalat Larabars just about every day and these babies are so much more decadent and chocolatey… Makes me feel like I am eating a royal dessert. I think that after trying these, my fiance won’t be so opposed to eating dates! I am planning to make them with all different kinds of flavors. And now I am pretty sure I know what I am going to give as favors for my small eco-wedding. Thank you!!! 🙂

  97. Ally says

Your Fudge Babies are PHENOMENAL. I’m on the Paleo diet, but struggle a lot with the temptation of sweets. These are a life saver! They’re so good, my husband, who also has quite a sweet tooth and is NOT doing the Paleo diet, asked me to make more for him! But I was wondering, is cocoa in line with the Paleo diet?

  98. Kenzie says

I think these are to DIE FOR! I am happy to see that they come in mini muffin size.. because I would be in trouble if they didn’t. I just want to eat the entire batch at once.. They are so delicious. Making them for a potluck next Friday.. they are always a hit! YUM!

I just made these and they are amazing! a big hit with all my family. i had to make them without the use of a blender (lots of chopping and hammering!) but it was worth it x

  100. Shelley says

Best flavor ever! My boyfriend suggested I add some pretzels to the basic “hot cocoa” babies and omg, it was fantastic!

  101. Foodie Gets Fit says

    Hi Katie!

Thanks so much for your kind and rapid reply to my email the other day!

So my blog and web page are finally up and running with my very first (and only) blog entry in honor of you and Fudge Babies… thank you so much!

I have had a big set back though – I used iweb (mac) and just discovered that I can’t have a comments page without going through some big song and dance, so for the moment I can only take emails! *sigh*
I’m just going to have to start again with WordPress I think…

Oh well, c’est la vie. I’d love to hear what you think of it – I know I’m addicted to yours! I just found “how to milk an oat”. What a fantastic title! It conjures up a great visual… you’re very clever like that.

    Liese xx

  102. NanaMolly says

My adaptation is Carob Babies. I have been avoiding anything that produces the health issues I have been fighting. Hence, no chocolate. Carob is a great substitute. It made these babies the perfect sub for this former chocoholic! Just exchange the carob powder for the cocoa powder. Presto, a snack for the holidays I can eat guilt free!

  103. Bbetter says

I just love the fudge babies. I’m addicted totally. I crave them. I had to cut the recipe down to a single serving because I will sit and eat every bit of them. Also I am so impatient to get them into my mouth that I don’t even roll them into ball! I eat right out of the cut that I mixed them in… with a spoon. Wow where have these been all of my 43 years? Thanks so much, they are amazing!

  104. Susan says

No Bullet, no food processor. Just chopped by hand. Tasted good but no where near as moist as yours look and wouldn’t hold together without added water. Also not shiny like yours. Any suggestions or is it just the result of doing by hand instead of machine?

  105. krystle says

I tried these for the first time today after getting a kitchenaid food processor for Christmas. They were DELICIOUS! My processor had some issues breaking up the dates, but the ones I got were from a bulk section and pretty dry, today I went to the store and bought a bag and they have more moisture. They turned out amazing, I can’t wait to make your other varieties!

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Haha I have thought about it a few times… but the thing is that it takes years to get a product line up and running successfully, and I also have zippo business experience. It’s a huge risk, because you could devote ten years of your life to it, only to find out that the product never reaches mainstream status in the end. But yeah, I still have thought about it. Right now I just have too much else to do, in terms of fun ideas for the future :).
P.S. Sorry about disabling the direct msg thing. I am just way too verbose for 140 words!

  106. Julie says

Have you tried making a smoothie version out of this? I would probably use almond milk instead of walnut or cashew, with only a couple dates, vanilla extract, raw cacao, and some sunflower sprouts for protein, bananas for neurotransmitters, and an avocado for some healthy fat. Yum!!

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

I did… and it wasn’t very good. But I have a blogger friend who did make a good “Fudge Baby Shake” that I highlighted a few months ago. If you ever do make a version, I’d love to hear it! Maybe I should try again!

  107. cutepi314 says

Just tried these out…they are AMAZING! I had to add a little bit of water to make them sticky enough to roll into balls, but other than that, fabulous! I’m going to try adding almond milk next time and throw in some oats and coconut. Thanks for this recipe, I really can’t believe they’re good for you!

  108. Odette says

    Hi Katie
I want to try this recipe so badly they look delicious and I love date balls, but I don’t have nuts. Do you think they’ll be fine without the nuts?

      • Odette says

No I don’t but I’ll be going to the stores tomorrow and to buy the nuts definitely will be trying them. By the way I tried your single lady carrot and it is beyond delicious. Treats like that make me glad I’ve decided to become a vegetarian.

  109. Kristina says

Thank you Katie, you are a lifesaver. I am struggling to lose weight and I now have delicious healthy chocolate treats to turn to when I’m tempted to eat bad chocolate treats. The guilt is gone and I feel energized with these desserts.

  110. Kristine says

I have tried similar recipes but yours is by far the best. A chocolate covered (and healthy) life is the best life! Thank you!!

  111. Blake says

I came across your site while searching for healthy chocolate desserts. I never really had a sweet tooth before I started Paleo but not wanting to go off of my diet, I began looking for alternatives to satisfy my newly developed craving. I just made these and they are AMAZING!!! I look forward to trying out a few of your other recipes as I stay on track with my health/fitness goals.

    Thanks for the great info.

  112. Veronica says

I forgot to tell you I made these! These were the first things I found on your blog and I made the hot cocoa version, but I actually followed the measurements from another blog with the same recipe (http://thecopycatcook.wordpress.com/2010/09/06/cocoa-nibbles/) since I didn’t want to use my scale and I had to tell you how much I liked them! They didn’t last long, and I’m looking forward to making other varieties of raw balls, like peanut butter chocolate chip cookie dough balls! Have you made something like that? Thank you so much for sharing your fabulous recipes with us!

  113. Em says

    OMG.

    SO GOOD.

I think the best part is that I can let my kids eat these whenever and as much as they want (well…ok, within reason, kids don’t have an off-switch) and they love them, too.

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Haha “kids don’t have an off switch”
I was babysitting once (in 6th grade), and the lady told me I could let her son have whatever he wanted… well, when she got home she discovered I’d allowed him to eat more than 1/2 a box of nilla wafers!

  114. Melissa says

OH MY HECK. I just made these – they are freakin’ amazing! I LOVE them – they taste just like a brownie! Thank you, thank you!!!

  115. jamie says

Thank you, Thank you for this great recipe. I love it. Made it for the first time today, and i can’t stop thinking about all the different variations i can try.
You are Amazing. Keep on thinking of tasty thinks to create.

  116. Katy says

Wow, these really are the best!! I made the original first and we loved those and then upgraded to the Hot Cocoa version and wow, I still can’t believe these are healthy!! It’s really amazing, thank you!

  117. Joel Werdell says

Awesome! I have made the original recipe twice now. Added shredded coconut to the batter, then ground some almonds added more shredded coconut and rolled the balls into the coconut/almond mixture. Everyone has loved them, even friends and family that think the stuff I make is usually too weird. Thanks!

  118. OvoVeggie Alexandra says

I finally found those stinking dates and… Oh my God.

These are little balls of heaven! They taste BETTER than fudge. I’m in love. 🙂

  119. Annette says

I just became a follower of you 2 days ago. I’m sure these treats are going to be in Heaven! Wow, Katie! This has to be hands-down the best healthy treat I’ve ever had. 🙂

  120. Jessica says

Just made these, with a few changes since I didn’t have cashews on hand, so good! This was the easiest quickest recipe ever. Trying to find sweet treats for that 3 oclock craving and i think this is it! Thanks for the recipe!

  121. Linda B. says

I tried the Original Fudge Babies with the cashew’s and they were wonderful…will satify your chocolate cravings…and especially thanks for putting the grams measurements. I tried sooooo many recipes and they have not come out right. Thanks so much. Linda B

  122. Heather says

I just made the original fudge babies!! I’m obsessed! I love raw dessert-type things. These are literally perfect and totally satisfied my sweet craving!

  123. Suzanne says

Katie, you are my new best friend!!! I had a sweet tooth something terrible. I just made these, and I came close to dying from ecstasy! Simply awesome! Thank you, thank you!

  124. Sabine says

These look amazing! I’ve just started eating Larabars which are chewy bars (similar to Clif) that are made entirely of raw food with usually 4 ingredients or less. I love how dates can become such a great naturally sweetener. I will definitely be making these, so thanks 🙂

  125. Emily says

Just made these (with raisins because I had no dates) for the first time today – they’re incredible! I LOVE all your recipes and the health-conscious creative genius that goes into them!

  126. Kate says

I just made these for the second time and my two year old says they’re better than the wheat/condensed milk version we usually buy from our local cafe! A very new convert, I am so happy to have found your blog. I’m now slowly trying to convert my white flour loving husband into a Katie-treats-eater… So far, so good!

When I tried these the first time I didn’t have dates so used sultanas (raisins) and didn’t have walnuts so used pecans and then rolled them in coconut – they were good too!

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Awwww! Your comment is so sweet :). Made me smile so much!
It won’t let me leave a comment on your blog (because I don’t have a wordpress or google acct), but I wanted to say that I love that you’re blogging for YOU! And I like your background; it’s unique and fun! 🙂

  127. Stacy says

I was showing my mom your blog while we were making the Genius Blondies and she pointed to the Fudge Babies on the side of the page, saying, “Wow, I want those.”

So while the blondies were in the oven, I kept the food processor out and made Fudge Babies for the first time…. Delicious! We used this organic raw cacao powder that my mom had around, which made them extra fudgey! We’re in heaven. 🙂

  128. Jason says

My wife and I have started a paleo diet and she was hankering for something chocolate. A friend pointed me here. I made these today. I made two batches and each had their issues. In the store I was deciding between the sun made dried pitted dates or the organic from the bulk section dates. The sun made ones seemed much harder that the organic bulk ones. So I bought the organic ones. Put my first batch in my food processor and the processor couldnt handle the gumminess of the dates and almonds. Had to put them in the blender and use the chop function. I popped one on and ow my gosh soo good! But crack! I chomped down on an almond, or so I thought. It was a pit. The organic ones were not pitted! Oops! So when rolling the balls I discarded any un chopped peices and most were pits. I decided to eat these myself as even the smaller chopped pits are like biting rocks… I let my wife have batch 2 noted below. Oh well. Second batch: I removed the pits this time, yay, an then I over chopped the batch and it blended smooth and the “batter” was hot. I let it cool down. Rolled them out and they look like brownie batter. Cant see the almonds in them! Oh well, they tasted good but I am missing that crunch from the almonds. I think since I used dry unsalted almonds, I didn’t get some of the oils from the raw walnuts the recipe called for. So I put in on table spoon of extra virgin coconut oil to give it a little more smoothness so they were not tooo dry. Next time I try this I should do better.

  129. Kara says

Katie! I have been wanting to make these for so long now but couldn’t find dates ANYWHERE! I finally found some and tried making these just now. They won’t stick together?!

Any tips? I still have taken a couple bites of the crumbly goodness and it’s awesome! I just rather have it in ball-form. Should I add more dates??

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Hi Kara! Mine always come out super-soft, but it definitely depends on the type of dates you use. By any chance, can you find SunMaid ates by you? They’d be in the section of the store where they sell raisins and dried fruit, and they come in a red bag. They will yield a very soft, sticky dough.

      • Kara says

All I could find was Dole. I think I may try adding more. It’s very crumbly, which actually I keep taking bites of and thinking it’d be good in yogurt! So maybe I’ll keep it like this and then try some new ones! Thanks! 🙂

  130. JennyBakes says

I made fudge babies today, and ended up adding another 2/3 cup dates, not for sweet but for sticky. I also drizzles in some agave. If you ended up with drier dates, is that what would you have done? Or do you have another ingredient suggestion?

Also, once it was sticking together enough, I added a handful of oats and some mini chocolate chips, and it tastes a lot like the dough to a cookie recipe my mom made a lot for double chocolate oatmeal cookies. Much better than I expected!

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

I’ve never had the problem of drier dates… I cannot recommend the sunmaid ones highly enough! They are super-sticky! 🙂

If you absolutely can’t find anything stickier, maybe try soaking the dates a little, before blending?

  131. Ashley says

I just have to share a funny story. My 9 year old son is a budding chef. He is pretty serious about it, too. I have made your fudge babies in the past and he loves them. Well, yesterday, he was determined that we would make them once again. So we pulled out the food processor and pulsed away. While he was rolling them into balls, I was on your blog reading out the different flavors you have come up with. He is in the kitchen just about drooling. Finally he says, “Who is this girl? I want to marry her! How old is she, anyhow?” I told him that I believe you are in your 20s. “Oh,” he says, “Well, I like her recipes.”

Thanks so much for sharing your creations. I am defrosting chickpeas as we speak to try out the chocolate chip cookie dough dip.

    • Chocolate-Katie says

Ok, I think that is the cutest story I’ve ever heard!!!

Maybe someday I can hire him to cook for me! I love thinking up recipes, and I love eating them (of course!), but the actual cooking process isn’t my favorite part. I’m too impatient, wanting to eat all the ingredients. (And by “ingredients” I mean “chocolate chips.”)

  132. jennifer says

Just made these with sunflower seeds as I have an allergy/sensitivity to tree nuts. They turned out great! One question: do you use roasted nuts or raw? And, if roasted, are they roasted with salt or without. Thanks!

  133. jen says

i made these tonight and they were abs delicious and just sweet enough to curb my sweettooth. i made the flax seed ones too but hated them (i hate flax seed so go figure). I made the larabar cashews too and while they’re a bit too sweet for every day snacking (what i wanted them for) they are delicious as dessert for me!!!

    great recipes, keep them coming!

  134. April Guttormson says

We made the fudge babies and they are so yummy. We added coffee granules to them for a little twist. Thanks for the recipe.

  135. libbie says

Made these today! Made your chocolate cake batter milkshake yesterday & having pumpkin bread in a bowl tomorrow for breakfast! Can’t wait!!! Thanks for all these yummies! My first grade daughter loved the fudgies & I want to make her a milkshake tomorrow! 🙂

  136. Jennifer says

I wanted something chocolate-y but not sweet. I had dates and cocoa. Still as delicious as I remembered. Why has it been months since I last made these?

  137. ashley says

Do you have any nutritional info on these? Do they have the protein and fiber in them that a normal clif bar would have??

  138. Lindsay says

I just found this website from Money Saving Mom and OMG you are amazing!! We switched to whole foods about 2 months ago and the thing that has pained me the most is not eating chocolate. We don’t do chocolate chips but do cocoa, but I hadn’t found any good recipes. This site is like dying and going to heaven! I just scoured till I found a recipe I had all the stuff for, this one! IT WAS AMAZING!! I may or may not have eaten a bunch straight out of my processor then put the rest in a little tupperwear and hid it in the back of the fridge where my kids can’t find it : )

  139. Elle says

Oh. My. Goodness. I have the world’s biggest sweet tooth. I used to eat a daily cupcake before I started trying to resist refined sugars. I have to admit I made 2 batches of these babies last week. Can’t wait to make them for my family at Xmas. Thanks, Katie!!!!

  140. *izabela* says

Omgmigod! So freaken good! I could eat those 24-7! If I went grocery shopping 24-7! Haha. Thanks Katie;U r a great help! My family loves it when I bake these! For Thanksgiving I am going to show off and make ur recipes!!!! Thanks again! We luv u katie!

  142. Casey says

These look SO, SO, SOOO good!! however, I’m not a huge fan of dates..at all. Is there any possible substitutions that would work good for this recipe?? 🙂

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

      Hi Mia,
I don’try not to list particular brands for ingredients in my recipes because I know people have different brands on hand, and people also have different needs. But if someone wants these to be raw, then they can use raw cocoa powder as you said. I label all my recipes as “vegan” too, but that doesn’t mean it’s stopping someone who doesn’t share my ethical beliefs from using non-vegan chocolate chips or milk.
Some good brands of raw cocoa powder include Navitas Naturals and Truly Raw. Sorry for the confusion! And thanks for the comment… I’m not a raw foodist, so if you ever see me labeling something as “raw” that isn’t, definitely let me know my mistake so I can fix it :).

  143. TS says

After staring at the screen for half an hour, I just had to try these!
They are so good. I gave some to my mom, and she said “they…taste like brownies”
    That’s a good thing!

Thanks so much for the recipe. A family friend brought over some brownies, and I didn’t get to eat them (butter), so now I don’t feel so bad =)

  144. Justine says

    Katie,
I have been dying to try these and finally made them today! They are fabulous. Thank you so much for your creatvity!! YUM

  145. Mrs. Moore says

Will you ever tire of hearing how amazing these are!?!

Because they are. So. Amazing. I am an addict. I am a chocolate-covered Katie addict. Cookie Dough dip, fudge babies… can you move to Westchester County, NY so we can be healthy-eating friends?!?

It is so great to find healthy recipes that are actually healthy. And actually delicious. I am so tired of “healthy” recipes that include things like margarine and artificial sweeteners.

Please don’t ever stop creating new recipes!

  146. Chad says

I made these tonight for my girlfriend and I and they were absolutely amazing! She said they were better than brownies and totally calmed her sweet tooth! Thanks so much for the wonderful recipe!

  147. Jess says

Katie… You are a geneous! 🙂 I just made these fudge babies & oh my god… Are they ever good! & I cannot believe they are actually healthy. No added sugar, or preservatives. Your even getting fruit & protein in a chocolaty indulgence! Now that’s amazing if you ask me 😉 next time I bake a dessert to take to a party with me I’ll take this and I bet no one will know their healthy! Thanks so much for the recipe… 🙂 You are so good at what you do! xo

  148. BeccaG says

Oh my word, these are delicious!!!! I made them with cashews and rolled it all flat with a rolling pin between wax paper. Looks like fudge and tastes even better. I can’t believe something that yummy has all the great nutrients from the nuts and dates! I made it in the vitamix, but it was having a bit of a rough time. I think I need to invest in a good food processor. You like the magic bullet? Does it work well for these recipes?

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

It does work well for smaller versions (such as my Raw Macaroons or Cashew Cookie Fudge Babies). For these, I’d probably make a smaller batch so the bullet could handle it. (Also, I use SunMaid dates, which are much softer than regular medjools.)

For this recipe, I really like my Cuisinart.

      • BeccaG says

I’ll have to look at the Cuisinart…I have never had the need to crush so many nuts, dates,…chocolate chips!!! Haha Until then I might just have to work with smaller batches in my vitamix. Thanks again!

  149. Christa Herzog says

“But fudge babies are so healthy you don’t have to stop after a tiny taste.” = This is a sentence I absolutely welcome. Your fudge babies really look good. And chocolate is healthy as it has lots of nutrients which are good.

  150. Kyle says

    Hi Katie!

I stumbled upon your fudge baby recipe two years ago while searching for a student friendly, aka cost effective replacement to Larabars. Thank you a million times! My friends and family have been enjoying these ever since. I am wondering though, have you ever tried to add ginger & orange to your original recipe? I came across a similar varient at my local Organic Market, but have been unable to perfect the recipe at home.

    Warm regards.

  151. Sarah M says

Your original version is so good (I used dark chocolate cocoa and medjool dates)…tasted like a fudge brownie. Seriously amazing. Today, I tried using dried cherries instead of dates, and the results are also amazing!! Thanks for sharing yet another recipe that makes the vegan diet just a little more fun and whimsical 🙂

  152. Sherlock says

These are very good! Made them tonight for the Super Bowl. My mother in law liked them and asked for the recipe. My daughter had 4 and I had 3. THAT’S how good these are.

  153. Laura Hudlow says

omg…just made the Original Fudge Babies! I kept thinking this recipe can’t be right — it needs more ingredients! (I did end up adding a tablespoon of Almond Milk.) I thought it was going to be too dry — but lo and behold, I made little balls out of the “dough” – and it’s all I can do to keep from eating every last one! Sooooo delicious!!

  154. christie says

Hi! I really liked these fudgie balls, they were very yummy. I did have a problem though during the creation of these I destroyed my magic bullet and I’m still waiting to see if the ninja that I transfered the mixture to survived! Yikes! I would love to know if you have had similar problems with making these or if there is a trick to thining out the mix? Thanks and I still love your blog even though it killed my appliances 🙂

  155. Beth says

OM Katie I found your blog by a pinterest pin…I’ve tried 3 of your recipes so far and you my dear are a dessert Einstein:) Wow!!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! I have never been a person to follow someone’s blog, or comment, but your site is unbelievable, these fudge babies are amazing!!!

  156. Marni says

    Katie,

I just made these. They are amazing! And I feel so good knowing that they’re raw! They whipped up super quick, and it’s always fun to play in your food 🙂

I just learned about your blog a few months ago, and I look forward to trying so many of these recipes. I really want to incorporate more raw foods into my diet and have fun at the same time! Thank you for everything you do.

  157. Robin says

I absolutely love this! I don’t even bother to roll them into balls – I just put some of the mixture in a bowl and eat with a spoon. It’s my favorite treat these days! Thank you sooo much for sharing this recipe with us!

  158. Alicia says

Loving your recipes; the fudge babies and related variations are my nightly ritual now. I’m finding that I can resist other temptations that I encounter during the day because I think to myself, “I don’t need that; I can have a fudge baby (or three) when I get home!” Guess I should buy stock in dates; I’m glad Costco carries them in bulk. Ha! Thanks so much for yumming it up!

i wanted to make them today, when i prepared my dates it turned out i didn’t have walnuts, so i used hazelnuts instead – so delicious!! 😀

  160. clancey says

I am a brand new fan and a brand new vegan, though an old broad. I love your recipes and I would love to prepare more of them, but I’d really like to be able to easily print them out. Could you make it easier for us dinosaurs who don’t have laptops or iphones?

  161. Christina says

I just made these and the peanut butter and cookie dough flavors. They were all very delicious! Roughly how many calories does one fudge baby have?

  162. Jim Gilligan says

Just made these. INCREDIBLE! I would call them Brownie Babies. This is the first confection I’ve eaten since going grain free three years ago. Grain-free, gluten-free, sugar-free. 5 minutes start to finish! ROCK!

  163. Allyson says

These are sooooooooo good!!! I love this recipe so much!!!!! <3 🙂 They sound kind of weird at first with the dates (i don't like dates by themselves) but they are so good! Did i mention that i love this recipe!?!? If I didn't know that they don't have sugar in them, I would think that I was being bad by eating 2 of them at night!

  164. Lindsay says

Fold the crumbs into sugar-free whipped topping and freeze for some divinity. My husband discovered this!!! So good. 🙂

  165. Dani says

I don’t have a food processor…is there any other way that I could make these?!? I’m always looking for “healthier” desserts, cause both my hubby and I have major sweet teeth!! 🙂

  166. Brittany says

I made these tonight and they turned out so good!! Wow im really impressed with these! I made the gingerbread men awhile ago, and those were good too but you cant eat too many of them before you get sick of the ginger. These are a whole ‘nother story!

  167. Artsymama says

I have been going through your website trying to try a new recipe each day. You have yet to dissapoint me! These are beyond amazing. I just made the third batch in two days! My kids fight over these. I always shoo them out of the kitchen when I make them because my son swears he hates nuts….little does he know 😉

  168. Denise says

How long can these stay out on countertop? Should these be frozen or refrigerated? This will be the first recipe I try. Thanks!

  169. Meggan says

My 4 year old says “We have fudge babies and fudge daddies, but where are the fudge mamas?” We love these!!

  170. Kim Sutton says

What did I do wrong???! I can’t get them to stay together. The mixture tastes wonderful, but it just falls apart when I try to roll it in a ball. Help please 🙂

    • Jim says

Kim, I use organic dates from my co-op, which are apparently drier than Sunmaid dates. So I add a little water while I’m grinding everything in the food processor until the mixture changes from crumbly to the consistency of a stiff dough.

    • Meggan says

I actually found that if I don’t blend them well enough they don’t stick, but if you use a good food processor and do it for at least 1 full minute (or more) they start sticking better. Sometimes I also add a T of peanut butter

  171. Jill Safken says

OMG…I must say they are AMAZING….I am going to be able to have my dessert fix. I just started paleo and these fit. The next time I make these I am going to roll them in toasted coconut flakes. Very Yummy thank you for the post. I am also going to try the other recipes as well.

  172. Bethany says

Finally made these! They are so incredibly delicious. I’ve been having to force myself NOT to eat the entire recipe all in one day. 🙂 Thank yoouuu, Katie!

  173. Kimberly says

I just made these for the play off game tonight. I didn’t have vanilla (??? go figure) and so I used imitation rum extract and made yummy rum balls, one of my husbands favorite things!! They are SOOOOOOOOOOO good.

  174. Debra @ BeyondPrenatals says

Falling in love with your recipes! First it was deep dish cookie pie, then the raw chocolate fudge cake, now the fudge babes! Tomorrow I try the macaroons for Passover:) My variation of fudge babes for my allergic son: same proportions as original but used raw pumpkin seeds…he has literally been begging me to make them again, he is 5 but knows good food when he tastes it! Keep up the fantastic work, I tell so many clients about this site;)

  175. Jenny says

I added marshmallows and made a rocky road version. These are amazing, Katie. Thanks for the recipe, as well as the larabar recipes.

  176. Samantha says

Just had to tell you that I am soo obsessed with the peanut butter cup fudge babies! They are very addicting so I have to limit myself to making them only once a week because otherwise I’ll over-indulge (literally quadruple the recipe). Best dessert ever! Love your blog and all your recipes- you’re doing a great job!

  177. Victor says

I can’t get enough of these fudge babies… They’re literally my favorite dessert now. There are a lot of similar-sounding recipes for “date-ball”-type things but they are seriously weird and I wouldn’t try them. This is the most awesome and best date-dessert ever, among all the many recipes for them that exist! Thanks for forging ahead on your quest for sinless desserts!

  178. Aya says

I finally tried making them and they’re fantastic! I just want to share: I don’t own a food processor so I put the dates in a shallow dish with a bit of water and stick it in the microwave to soften them, then I mash them with a fork. And for the nuts, I chop them very finely. Thanks for coming up with such a great recipe!

  179. courtney says

oh my. i just made the original babies! i was skeptical, i’ll admit. i was thinking “these are gonna taste good, but verrrry healthy.” wow, was i wrong! not only are they healthy, but they’re absolutely delicious! just like biting into a piece of fudge!

my food processor was very angry with me, however! i thought it was going to fly off the counter top! i’ll certainly be making some of the variations soon!

  180. Emily says

These are amazing! I made them for the first time last night and am making my second batch right now (the raw thin mint brownies this time). My family loved them! My mom even brought some to work to share, and I brought some for my coaches =]

  181. luana says

    Great recipe! Sounds yummy
I was just wondering if the dates can be substituted by something different like dried figs

  183. Jim Gilligan says

This time around I substituted shredded coconut for the walnuts (same measurement). Really good and reminiscent of Haystacks in taste and texture!

  184. Barbara says

I think that one of the most important things that anyone should do (as far as diet goes) is to get rid of the excessive sugar. I’ve been working on that for years. I cut sugar in half then in quarters in most of the recipes that I use. And even better would be to substitute other sweeteners like agave or maple syrup, or best choice is dates or other dried fruit. Good for you, Katie, for coming up with these recipes and sharing them with others! Thank you.

  185. Angela says

I just made these, just a slight variation. Added 1/2 tsp more vanilla, the full 4 tbs of DUTCH cocoa, and 1 tbs of agave…. chewy chocolatey heaven. Thank you for this blog.

  186. Jessica McKnight says

Katie – about how many “babies” will one batch make? Just trying to figure out some nutritional info – thanks!

  187. Rachel says

Can I use pitted prunes instead of dates? I accidentally bought a huge bag of pitted prunes instead of dates today. 🙁

  188. Julie says

These are wonderful and very easy to make. I don’t think I had enough dates so I added a little honey and they were perfect! My husband could not tell they were dates at all… Kate I think you have opened up a whole new world of desserts to my family. Thank you!

  189. Kerry says

I just made these (the cashew version), and they’re SO GOOD!!! I don’t know why I waited so long to try these! I know I’m going to be making these over and over again! Thanks for the recipe!

  190. Michelle Meyers says

I made these the past weekend for a family who has food allergies and they went over great! The only thing I did was to save the salt till after they were rolled out and sprinkled course sea salt over them. I think it was just amazing….Thanks for your recipe!!!!

  191. Rene says

I have noticed many of your recipes use dates. I don’t like dates and would like to see an alternative. This is the reason I don’t like Lara bars. They all have dates in them. Thanks.

  192. Clara Cheung says

I made 1/2 portion of your recipe late last night with my birthday present – Cusinart Mini-Prep Plus Processor and the fudge babies are gorgeous.

  193. Lisa Petrie says

Just made these, and they are incredible!! I will be taking them to all future paleo and non-paleo potlucks, alike!

    🙂

    Thanks!

  194. Tammy says

I was at a weak moment and wanting to make some “skillet fudge brownies” that I saw on Pinterest….then I found your recipe for these and made them instead…..thank you for sharing this recipe, it will now be my “PMS chocolate craving” standby! You are a life saver!

  195. diana fox says

Thank you for all your recipes. Do you have the nutritional data on these. I’m on WW and that would be great.

  196. Shannon says

Just made these and they are totally addictive. I really thought they’d be just like a Lara Bar, but they’re so much better!

  197. Amber says

I just made my first batch of Fudge Babies… we had a healthy recipe contest at work, and I won!! Thank you Katie – these are sooo yummy! My coworkers requested a second batch for tomorrow!

  198. Hilke says

Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe – what a revelation! I found your site via someone who had tweaked your original recipe (i didn’t even know what a fudge baby was :-)! ). I much prefer your version, but used almonds this time, as i was out of walnuts. Then i added 10ml of liquid, which really improved the texture for me (i guess my dates weren’t particularly juicy).

Thanks again, Katie – can’t wait to try out your other recipes, your site is a real find!

  199. Gemma says

I adore these things so much, I have been making them by the tub load ever since I found them! Today I got a bit sneaky and put in half a zucchini and (about) a teaspoon of agave. Then blended and blended till it was like chocolate truffle mix, then I rolled the balls in cocoa/coconut/almond slivers. Freaking love! My mum liked them better then the original (until I told her about the zucchini and then she just looked vey unimpressed lol! More for me then.

  200. Sashi says

I know this post is almost 3 years old but I made these tonight and they are FABULOUS! I just have a puny little 3-cup food processor which was *not* good enough for these but I made it work. It just took longer. 🙂 Thank you for posting this!

If you ever want to figure out nutritional data for your recipes, I found this pretty decent free online tool that I use quite often as a sanity check: http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-calculator.asp

  201. Heather says

I have made these, along with having made home made lara bars, and the chocolate & nuts reminds me of the outer coating of a candy bar I used to really enjoy called a Twin Bing. The outside is chocolate with tiny chunks of nuts- and the inside has a chewy (but not sticky) cherry nougat filling. I got to daydreaming about recreating a vegan version of this candy bar & searched for Twin Bing copy-cat recipes online. The recipes I found that seemed like they’d give the right consistency to the nougat used marshmallows & cherry flavored baking morsels(chips) to make a fudge. I thought I’d found my key to success- until I realized all the cherry morsels I look up contain dairy. Seems as though I’d have to come up with something totally from scratch involving imitation cherry flavor? I don’t know if I’m up to the task, but I hear that YOU like a challenge 😉

  202. DawnG says

I’ve tried MANY of your recipes and love ALL of them, but never tried this one before until a couple of days ago (I don’t like the 2 main ingredients, dates or walnuts, so I figured what’s the point). I made a batch for my husband and … well, between my 4 year old daughter and I, we finished the batch (my husband only got 2)! You’re right, these are WAY better than anything you can buy! Oh, and I ran out of dates making the second batch, so I subbed prunes for part of the dates and it worked well! Thanks so much for making another AMAZING recipe!

  203. Britt says

I have to say I find these little babies IRRESISTIBLE it is absolutely impossible for me to grab one at a time out of the fridge. I have made a batch every week for the last 3 weeks they are so good! Thank you Katie for creating these!

  204. Jess says

Hey Katie! I used to make these all these time with a cheap little food processor I had and they always turned out great! Now I have a Black and Decker food processor, works great for everything except when I make this recipe now, it never turns to dough. 🙁 it’s all crumbs! So I tried putting a bit of liquid in it to give it some moisture but they just aren’t the same… Am I doing something wrong? How could I fix this?

    Thanks so much!

    Jess 🙂

    • Elysia says

The moisture comes from oil that will come out of the nuts. You need to squeeze the sandy dough together to make it stick. If it’s too dry, you may need to process it longer, or process the nuts separately before adding other ingredients. But don’t over process, or you will have an oily mess! Good luck, hope this helps everything come together for you. This really is an amazing recipe!!

  205. laura says

Awesome healthy snack to hit that chocolate craving, i subbed half pistachios for the walnuts (1/2 cup each) and it came out to be a really nice flavour profile 🙂

  206. Emma says

OH MY GOSH KATIE!!! Just made these and they are INCREDIBLE!!! Not to be too personal, but I in recovery from an ED and Nakd bars (Larabars to you) are some of the only things I can eat… I made these and am SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!
ANYONE that makes these MUST put a fudge baby in the microwave for 20 seconds, it actually tastes and feels like eating a chunk of hot fudge brownie!
    SO MUCH <3 KATIE!
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  207. Parvaneh says

I have a question: which one works better for a pie crust, this recipe or 30-sec chocolate pie crust? I tried the 30-sec one but I`d like to know which one do you offer. Thanks for all your delicious recipes 🙂

  208. Melania says

These should be illegal. I just want to say: holy freaking hell these things are insanely easy, delicious and satisfying. They are NOT something you should attempt if you’re hungry because you will not, I repeat you WILL NOT even make it to the forming balls stage. I used fresh dates (not sure if there really is a difference). Honestly, I would want these for my last meal.

Katie, you are my idol and I will purchase anything you write.

  209. Maggie says

Have you ever made a chocolate orange version of these? I start craving chocolate oranges this time of year but I’m trying to stay away from sugar so I think I’m going to try putting some orange zest into these and see how they turn out. Thanks for this recipe, I’ve made them several times and everyone loves them, even my health-food hating kids.

  210. Kathy Anderson says

    Katie,

Do you ever use or do you have any recipes using dried plus (prunes)? I have a whole bag and am tired of eating the Costco size bag. Can they be substituted for the raisins you use in recipes?

    thanks,
    Kathy

  211. Jen says

Made these tonight for first time as I had a chocolate craving and no sweets in the house and had dates in my fridge from a different recipe I had decided not to make last week…and oh my goodness, these are delicious. I made in my Magic Bullet. I did have to add a little water to help it mix but came out great.

BTW, I assume these need to be refridgerated…if not, please add to your recipe…particularly as fridge space is at a premium near holiday time!

  212. Becky says

Made something similar to the original version this morning with a few less dates and unsalted dry-roasted peanuts instead of the walnuts. Tasted exactly like chocolate-peanut butter fudge!

  213. April B says

I asked my Dad for a Ninja for Christmas just so I could make these Fudge Babies; oh my god!!! They are so fabulous!!!! My 9 yr old loved them. Thanks so much for your wonderful recipes!!!!! 🙂

  214. veggiegurrrl says

Yum! I made the cashew version and added 1/8 tsp. peppermint extract. They taste like Girl Scouts Thin Mints! I crunched the numbers to get the WW points values: I used a melon baller and got 9 servings, which comes out to 1 point per serving. But be careful, if you only divide the dough 8 ways, it comes out to 2 points!

  215. Emma says

Even better than I remembered them from the first time around. However I changed a few things which made them work for ME a bit better:
    – I blended the walnuts first until most of them were a powder, but a few good lumps were left.
    – I added about a tbs of water at the end of blending
    – I rolled each one in the 4th tbs of cocoa powder mixted with a bit of Splenda.

This made them more like little fudge balls for me 🙂

    • Unofficial CCK Helper says

I’ve tried a number of different ways, and here’s my experience with each:
Cabinet storage: a few days at most
      Fridge: Up to several weeks
      Freezer: 2-3 months

  216. Jenn says

Love this recipe. I just made the fudge babies but used toasted coconut almonds and put some flaked coconut on top. Almond joy!

  217. Kris says

Do you think it would work to use almonds or peanuts instead of walnuts or cashews? These look fabulous, but my husband has major allergies and we can’t keep certain nuts in the house.

    • Unofficial CCK Helper says

I think it’d be good! I’ve tried her nut recipes with different kinds, and substitutions are often good.

  218. Anna says

These taste absolutely delicous! They taste like a rich brownie – or brownie batter. They are super easy to make and simple ingredients. They turned out so great my mom made me make more for my oldest sister (who is vegan and gluten-free) and her husband. I love your recipes because they are so simple and healthy. 🙂

  219. Amy says

My package of dates is 283.5 grams, will there be a problem if I use all of them? Maybe I should just eat one or two?

  220. Cris says

These are awesome. I ground up some Trader Joe’s freeze-dried raspberries and added 2 tablespoons of the powder. Try that for a nice pop. Could probably add more but I wanted to save some powder for my camping hot chocolate!

  221. Tilley says

I loved these but they definitely were not very sugary. I’m the only one in my family who likes them (because I’m not much of a sweet tooth). For me these are wonderful! But for normal people I would suggest adding some sugar.

  222. Charlotte says

How many calories would one of these be, and on average, how many balls does this recipe make? I hope I haven’t missed that information on the recipe. They look absolutely sublime, Katie. Thank you for all your SPECTACULAR recipes. Charlottex

  223. Jessie says

someone probably already asked this but i’m too lazy to read all the comments!! how long do these keep? fridge? counter? freezer? they are delish by the way. seriously love them.

  224. Raizie says

Hi. Sorry if you’ve answered this question already, but I couldn’t scroll through all 699 comments.

Do you keep these in the fridge? Doesn’t seem like there’s anything perishable and I can’t see them lasting all that long 😉 but you never know.

    Thanks, they’re super yummy.

  225. Bryony says

I made these last night, slight variation by using almonds and coconut instead of walnuts, I LOVE this recipe, tastes like amazing dark chocolate fudge. The boyfriend (as it turns out) doesn’t like dark chocolate and this still puzzles me. I also dipped them in dark chocolate and sprinkled with dessicated coconut, my coworkers love them – thanks so much for this recipe!

  226. Danielle says

Wow these are amazing! My 2 picky eating kids love them. I will make these regularly. Trying to get the junk food out.

  227. Jan says

I finally made the fudge babies and WOW! My husband and I LOVE them! They taste exactly like rich, decadent, chocolate fudge! And they were so easy to make! I used Ghirardelli cocoa and whipped these up in my Nutri-bullet in about 3 minutes. Thank you for a great recipe!

  228. Kay ren says

!! Just made these but with salted peanuts instead of walnuts, and subbed dried cherries for half of the dates (and no cocoa).. And now I have a lovely bowl of peanut butter and jelly fudge babies!! Happyface!!

  229. jess says

I love these. I have made them twice now and the first time they were gone in literally two minutes lol. the second time i made them my dates were to old so they didnt bind as well so we used 1/2 cup of peanut butter and this makes the recipe even more delicious especially if your craving both chocolate and peanut butter!

  230. allmacye says

WOW!!! These taste great! Easy to make ( like fool proof!) LOL thank goodness for that!
Hubby and I love them and now my neighbors think I slaved over them when they get them for special occasions…..I’m not saying a word, just getting all the glory!
    Thanks!! You Rock!

  231. Beverly says

    These are delicious!
I tried the recipe with prunes instead (less sugar than dates). They have a strong flavor, and I was able to temper it with another tbls of cocoa. Mine didn’t get dry with the addition because the prunes are quite soft and gooey.
    Thanks!

  232. Karen says

I had been considering making these for the longest time but was a bit sceptic all that they would really be as good as you said and never had dates around until finally today I picked up package of pitted dates at whole foods and decided to make these fudge babies. Oh my was I glad I did! The were AMAZING! They are so intensely chocolatey and brownie like, even the texture is like brownies. The only big differences between these and brownies are that these are much healthier and only take even a very slow cook like me five minutes to make!

  233. Margaret Funk says

You have a really great site — fab recipes; I just wish there was something set up so that I could print just one recipe……. instead of the whole page and all the posts.
    Thanks

    • Unofficial CCK Helper says

To print, highlight just the recipe itself and right-click “copy;” then open a new Word document and right-click “Paste.” You can give a name to this document and save it in a CCK Recipe file, and print it as needed.

  234. Joy says

I first had a student try one because I made them for our math department meeting and I wasn’t sure if “paleo” would go over well with the general public. He said they were really good, so I tried them out at our meeting. They LOVED them! I only used 3 tbsp of cocoa powder and they were plenty fudgey. Thanks Katie!

  235. Becky says

KATIE HELP PLEASE. I Followed your recipe to a T, but right now…my fudge balls don’t form into a ball because it’s more of a dry manure texture? 1 cup of walnuts, 1 tsp vanilla, pinch of salt, 3 Tablespoons cocoa powder, and I used a cup and 1/3 of pitted dates that weren’t sunmaid…don’t know if that’s the problem, but I’m highly frustrated and have two bags of idk-what-to-with sitting in my fridge..not sure how to fix it.

  236. Cindy says

Hi Katie! I just made the Original Fudge Babies & am wondering if I over processed them. They are holding their ball shape & taste fine, but oil has dripped into the bottom of my container. Is that normal??

  237. Donna Hawkey says

Hi Katie! I just learned from “eleana’s pantry” blog that you are the originator of the fudge baby recipe so I wanted to thank you. My son made these for his class while in middle school when he did a self directed food project on healthy eating. The whole class and the teacher went wild for them and asked him to do his presentation (with fudge babies) for other classes. It was a so fun for him to pass along a healthy non-sugar idea to kids. He was a star for awhile at school and had all the kids reading labels at home and asking questions! So we are going to make them again as he is in second year of high school and needs to bring a treat to class for his birthday next week, so you will be glad to know that we continue to pass along this favorite idea! Best to you and glad to find your blog!

  238. Angie says

These are amazing! I subbed the walnuts for roasted almonds because that’s what I had on hand. I made them for my daughter’s lunchbox but she’ll be lucky if there are any left tomorrow…I can’t stop eating them!

  239. Karla says

I love these! I like to play around with the amounts and I think my (and my family’s) favorite way of making these is to do part this recipe, part recipe for the chocolate peanut butter. So it’s a mix of dates and raisins, walnuts and peanuts, peanut butter, dark cocoa, and vanilla. I find it’s often too dry to stick together so I add a bit of honey.

  240. Mona Sigler says

I am a Fudge Baby addict. I am really lucky because here in Montreal I am able to buy Cedar Pressed Dates so when I open the package, it is already a sticky carmel-like consistency. I use a whole package (around 2 packed cups) with 2 cups of walnuts, lots of dark organic cocao, vanilla, salt and I pulverise in the food processor. Then I squish it into a brownie pan, put in the fridge to set, then cut into squares…..exactly like fudge or brownies ……… super amazing!!!! I’ve turned many friends onto making them as well!!!

  241. Hannah says

HALLALUJAH!!!! (is that how you spell it?) I TOTALLY needed this recipe!! What id been looking for had been here all this time..* sniff*
    :p

  242. Joanne says

Just made these on recommendation from a work friend. They are out of this world! And, yes, addicting! Thank you!

  243. Emma says

Oh my god! I’ve been struggling to find healthy recipes that actually taste delicious and this recipe was PERFECT! I actually tried to stop myself from having more than one because I was convinced they were rich, unhealthy chocolate fudge truffles. But then I remembered they are HEALTHY (and have the best name)! They just taste so good I keep forgetting. Huge hit with the whole family (even the fussy ones). Thank you you clever little thing!

PS I substituted the walnuts for almond meal (due to allergies and lack of actual almonds in the house), and had to add a little water to make the consistency right.

    • Fanny says

I think that really depends on the size of the ball you made. I made a quater portion of the recipe and roll into fingertip-size little ball. I finally got about 25 candy-balls

Hey Katie! Do you mind telling me how many servings/balls this makes and the amount of calories in each one???

  246. Kathryn says

Katie, thank you!! I work in a hospital laboratory and it’s currently Lab Week. Also known as National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week. Anyway, all week long, the lab is showered with goodies. Each day someone (usually the company of some of the machines we use) brings in something special. We’ve had a Mexican day, Pizza day, ice cream day, etc. Unfortunately for me, I decided to take on a special diet last week and I can’t have any of it! So what did I do? Make a huge batch of fudge babies! Which I then split into thirds and left some at cashew cookie, some hot cocoa, and some peppermint hot cocoa. They totally help me get through the day!! When I’m craving a brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce, I have a fudge baby or two and I’m satisfied 🙂 In love. Thanks again, Katie! By the way, sorry for being long-winded.

  247. Fanny says

I just made these in a small portion….that s really really awesome! Great natural sweetness with no extra sugar added! Definitely love them. My sister doubted the taste when I said I would try the recipe. Can’t wait to let her taste it

  248. kaytee says

OMG just made these for the first time, they smell amazing! I had to put them straight in the freezer, otherwise I was in danger of eating the whole lot right out of the mixing bowl!

  249. Olivia Grace says

I have been meaning to make these for ages, and when I finally got my food processor, I knew this would be among the first recipes I would need to try. Words cannot express how enthralled I am to be able to create such amazing, guilt-free, amazingly chocolatey balls of fudginess! I love to roll them in cocoa powder, because I feel like I’m eating a high-end chocolate truffle 🙂 Thank you for the amazing recipe! You never let me down 🙂

I have made these twice now, and just made them for a third time, but completely different… Instead of dates I used half dried peaches and half dried cranberries (because that’s what I had in the cupboard) and I used brazil nuts and almonds for the nut portion. No cocoa, rolled in coconut (which I also did for the original recipe, but is more vital for this new version, as the mix has come out quite sticky). They are DELICIOUS. Do recommend trying different fruit and nut combinations!

OMG my toddler cant get enough of these (and me too)! I make these in a vitamix. Has anyone else noticed that the walnut oil separates out? I do blend the heck out of these so it tastes just like soft tootsie rolls and pour the few tbsp of oil off.

Oh me goodness! I wanna make these for a little study snack!….and for dinner!….and for dessert! This girl needs it?

I’m going to use these for a valentines treat for my boyfriend. But I think I’ll make one of all your variations… definitely the peanut butter ones!!! Kind of like a healthy alternative to the standard chocolate heart. Thank you for the inspiration!!! Oh and btw I had to make them ten minutes after stumbling on them. They are fantastic!!!! I made small round cookies and have eaten at least 8 of them today!

I was so excited to try this recipe because I ADORE chocolate and dates!
Unfortunately my Breville food processor couldn’t manage the dates. I don’t know if it was because the dates were too hard or the food processor not strong enough. I was so dissappointed! 🙁

I’m making these fudge babies for some friends for Christmas (their kids have a laundry list of allergies, and these are a rare safe treat!).
Question: Should I refrigerate them? I’ve just made them, but it will be a couple of days before I can deliver them.

Thank you so much for catching that. Katie just fixed it! It’s fine to leave it out too, if you want a non chocolate version.

I made these and they came out too crumbly to roll into balls. Is there something I could add to make them stick together better?

Wow! These were SO easy and SO delicious! Trying to get my kids to eat pecans so I used those and the truffles came out just perfect. This will become a regular in the rotation!

    Hi KATIE,
Always enjoy perusing your recipe selection and have tried some too! With the fudge babies variations, do I add it to the whole batch of dough/batter or divide the dough and add the variations?

    • Jason Sanford says

For the variations, just ignore the original recipe completely and only use the amounts and ingredients listed in the variation you’re making 🙂

I am 9 years old. I made these with my mom and when we were making the fudge babies I couldn’t stop eating them before they were made into a ball.

Love this recipe!! Just realized that I need to make a gingerbread version for my dad. Any suggestions what amounts to use for powdered spices? Or would it be better to use some fresh ginger?

OKOK I am late to the game. BUT WOW! I am glad this is still posted!
I made half recipe – cuz you know it’s new – now I am going to try the nut free ones! These were worth it!
