My New Home

But first, breakfast:

boatmeal1

Warm and delicious Pumpkin Baked Oatmeal.

On a whim, I made my boatmeal with coconut butter as the fat source. As it turns out, coconut butter pairs really well with pumpkin. Not that I expected any different; coconut butter pairs really well with everything!

And this single-serving recipe never fails me.

boat2

I also ate the last of my samples of Vegan Greek Yogurt.

Then, after breakfast, it was time to meet a friend… and move into our new place!!

That’s my big news. (See? I told you it was something that was a huge deal to me, but that y’all probably wouldn’t care about. Your guesses about me running away with my blind date were much more interesting!)

We spent Thursday, Friday, and some of Saturday moving furniture, unpacking boxes, and organizing everything. The actual process of moving is never any fun, and I’m definitely not a stranger to it.

As a child, my parents bounced me all over the world: London, Tokyo, Philadelphia, Manila, Shanghai, and Dallas. And the bouncing didn’t stop when I got out on my own, moving first to a dorm in freshman year of college. When I transferred to SMU, a friend and I found an apartment together. Junior year, I moved to a single apartment after my friend graduated, and it was an adorable little place. But I arrived home one day to find a note taped to the door that said: “Move out, because we are demolishing your apartment to make room for the George Bush Library.”

Ugh.

So I got another apartment, with a roommate. And then, tired of all the moving, I moved back in with my parents for senior year. Living at home was awesome. It was free, familiar, and I got to see the people (and puppies!) I most love in the world. However, it’s just too easy to pretend you’re still a kid when you live at home. I was ready to get out on my own again and be independent.

Question of the Day:

If you don’t live with your parents, when did you move away from home?

Or when do you think you will leave home? Although I’ve lived on my own before, this is the first time I’ll truly be independent; paying my own rent and bills.

P.S. Can someone quickly go “like” my Facebook page?

I’d be so grateful… I know it sounds ridiculous, but I’m superstitious and am scared of 6666s! 😕

I lived with my parents during university, which was great since I got along with them well and it was so cheap! I house-sat at my grandparents for a month each year, conveniently around exam time. And then I finally moved out when I went to another city for my teaching degree.

By the way, I love your oatmeal. What do you think about making it the night before and warming it up at breakfast?

  2. Kristin @ STUFT Mama says

Yipee for your big move! 🙂 I already “liked” you on Facebook, but I see someone already helpd out. If I could “love” your page on Facebook I would! 🙂
Yay for your delicious breakfast and double yay for your big move! I’m so excited for you! Have a great day!

  3. Jen@newellnd says

I was the typical boomerang kid…moved away from home for a year in high school to attend a different school, moved back in with the parents after. Moved out to attend undergrad, parents moved to the same city 2 years later so I moved back in to save money. Finally, moved out for good during post grad and my parents moved to a different city at the same time (think they were trying to get rid of me?) but I still have “my room” at their new house.
Right now I am saving up and dreaming about purchasing my first “home” rather than living in a rented “house”

  4. Kate Bartolotta (@kate_bartolotta) says

Went over & “like” – couldn’t believe I hadn’t before!! I moved out at 18, but only during the school year at college. Moved out permanently at 21…best apartment was the 2 bedroom I had to myself;) Good luck – exciting news!!!

  5. Jessy (squeezetheday) says

Hah, I knew it. Usually when bloggers have a ~big announcement~, it’s usually that they’re moving, have a new blog domain or are leaving their job to blog full-time.
I’ll probably move after I finish university – right now I live in the dorm during the week and at home with my parents during the weekends/holidays.

  6. Ali @ Peaches and Football says

I went to college 4 hours away but came back and lived with my folks every summer. Then, once I had graduated, I planned to pay off my student loans and my car as quickly as possible. The ultimate plan was to save up for a downpayment and get my own home but then they closed down our office and we all lost our jobs. Those plans are still on the back burner. But I lived with Mom and Dad until I was 27 and then got my own apt. More and more people my age are living with Mom & Dad now it seems. Pretty commonplace now with the job market and economy.

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

So true! A lot of my friends still live with their parents (or moved back after college), especially if they are having trouble finding jobs. Selfishly, I like it because it means I get to see my friends more often since they haven’t moved away ;).

  7. Sünne says

Wow, that’s awesome, Katie! Congratulations on your new place – I hope you’ll eventually show some pictures :)! It truly feels nice to be independent and live on your own.

  8. Michaela says

I kinda thought u might move out! congrats 🙂
I moved out when I was 20 years old and I don´t regret it at all. Sure, I could have moved out earlier, but I was good waiting for another while, until I finally felt ready. Love it 🙂 Absolutely love it. (though I enjoy being at home for now, before going abroad once again ;))

  9. Natalie S. says

Yay, congrats! I don’t live with my parents and it’s nice to have the independence, but it’s also nice to go home and have free food and someone who cooks for me! My parents are pretty great 🙂

  10. Kathy says

Hi Katie! Congrats on the big move, it’s definitely exciting! I was bounced around a lot as a kid too actually… any chance you went to the American School in Japan when you were in Tokyo? 🙂 It’s a small international community!

      • Kathy says

How funny! I was there from 1rst-3rd grade and then 8th grade till graduation.. haha, leave it to my family to move to Tokyo twice. Hmm we may have overlapped a bit – how old are you again? I’m 23, so I think 1rst -3rd grade was uhhhh 94-96? I could be wrong though.. I’m terrible about recalling years 🙂

          • Kathy says

Well actually, since you’re 2 years older but was there for pre-school while I was there for 1-3rd grade, we probably even own some of the same yearbooks! Seems like we were there the same exact time.. how funny!

          • Kathy says

Ummm wait nevermind. My logic is totally flawed haha. You’re older than me, so that doesn’t make sense! We must’ve just missed each other 🙂

  11. Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats says

Congrats on moving girly! I haven’t lived at home since the summer after my freshman year in college. Currently, I am very nervous because I graduate from nursing school in December and I have NO idea where I want to go. I don’t want to have to move back home at all–after living alone for so long it is just kind of annoying to live back under the parents roof!

      • Maya says

I feel the same way! I lived at home for a few months before volunteering with India, and my mom totally acted like I was 14 again. I remember going out for a walk in the evening and I came home and my mom was really frantic saying “you have to tell us when you leave the house!” This was in small town WV, when I had just come back from living in the 2nd most dangerous city in the country on my own, and I was 24 years old…

  12. alexandra says

“P.S. Can someone quickly go “like” my Facebook page?

I’d be so grateful… I know it sounds ridiculous, but I’m superstitious and don’t like 13’s”

Lol! You are such a cutie! I’ve already Liked your page on FB so when I tried again it wouldn’t let me!
Congrats on the move! How exciting!

  13. Joanna says

I moved out on the morning of my 18th birthday.

    It was NOT pretty.

I moved out for reasons of my own, from anger to loneliness, and my boyfriend (at the time) helped me move all of my stuff. I had nowhere to stay for about four days and then I found an apartment, which I had to pay in full for.

    Again, NOT pretty.

However! As time went by, my family and I grew closer and we understood each other on a deeper level. I am very thankful that, through the pain and suffering, everything worked out better than expected. I can finally say “I love you” to my dad without feeling awkward.
Through this experience, I can say distance really does make the heart grow fonder. I love my family.
Pardon me if I’ve said too much. 🙂

  14. Jenny says

Haha, like you my parents had my brother and I moving from place as children. 🙂 Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, Fukuoka, the US, Manila… When I moved back to Canada for college, my parents had to stay on so my dad could finish his posting in Manila, so that’s when I left my parents. I stayed in a dorm for a year, too… It was horrible! Did you have a better experience?

And… seriously. The George Bush Library? 😐

      • Jenny says

Oh, what I meant was, did you have a better experience living in a dorm than I did? I know university dorms vary greatly across countries, or even provinces and states. 😛

My dad actually did that for all of our postings! (Flying ahead half a year earlier.) It’s very fortunate that you managed to stay together, always. 🙂 Must’ve made the actual move a little bit more of a family effort, no?! Because my dad was always going ahead, our stuff would usually be sent ahead and waiting for us by the time we arrived, and there would at least be some sort of order in the apartment or house we’d move into.

By the way! Where did you live in Manila? I lived in Taguig/Metro Manila, not far from Makati. And did you ever get to experience any typhoons while you lived there? (Not fun…! But sure make for great stories!)

  15. Aja says

That is very exciting! I’m still in high school but I plan on moving out as soon as I get to college. Some people like their family and would love to just stay with them always but my situation is quite different. I gotta get out! I hope you like your new place!

That totally sucks that they made you move the the George Bush Library. 😛

  16. Lorna says

I moved out from my parent’s directly after college. I literally was home for a week while they finished the flooring, then moved back down by college (1.5 hr away) into the tiniest apartment ever. But, it was mine, and I loved it anyway! It’s fantastic to be independent.

  17. Maria @ runningcupcake says

That is exciting news! I moved out late- when I was 25 I think- when me and Andy bought our home together. We did look at renting earlier but thought we would be better to save the money. 🙂
    Baked oatmeal looks amazing

  18. Denise says

I left home at around 19, but paid rent since the age of 17, so it was sort of like I was on my own at home lol, but not really. I now own my own home (with my husband of 13yrs), and though there is always that little bit of anxiety about making ends meet and such, I am so grateful to have a place to rest my head at night 😀 It’s something I never thought I would be able to do (buy a house that is, not rent one), and when that dream came true, I was so ecstatic.

Congrats on your new place, it’s the beginning of a wonderful new life 😀

  19. Liz @ Tip Top Shape says

I just moved into my own place. My parents are footing the bill but it’s my first place that isn’t a dorm room. It was sort of weird at first–especially because I don’t have roommates. But I’ve grown to really love it. It’s sort of funny how something so foreign at the start can grow to feel like home.

    Congrats on your move!!

  20. Jennifer says

    Congratulations on the move!

I lived at home all through college and through a master’s degree (which is the same home in which I spent my enitre childhood). I moved out when I started my PhD just over 3 years ago. Now, I am happy enough to stay here for as long as possible–moving is the pits!

  21. Alyssa says

    Yay, congratulations!!!!!
I also first moved out when I went to college. Ironically, at the age of 42, I, along with my Hubby, the kids, and dog, will be moving in with HIS parents. Between the economy and his dad’s surgery (and the fact that they have a HUGE house), it makes the most sense.

  22. Jennyb says

I admire people who can move away from home. I know my complicated past makes it a little more tricky but i hope that in the next 2 years i will be able to get even stronger & move out hopefully for university. It does kind of depress me that i will be 27 before i move out for uni even, but then i know lots of people are moving back home for financial reasons too these days. My neighbours’ son has just moved back home so he can study & he must be nearly 40! (he does have a wife & kids in japan tho)

  23. Jasmine says

Finally!! haha I was so curious 🙂 Congrats on the new move, I know it can be super stressful getting settled in and unpacked, but exciting at the same time.
I moved away from home for University, lived in residence the first 3 years, and now for my last year in a house with two awesome roommates. As much as I love living at home (I’ve spent summers there still), I really enjoy the freedom of living away and having my own space.

  24. radioactivegan says

I moved out of my parents’ house when I was 18 and never looked back … I’ve been paying all my bills since then. It’s nice to feel independent, but I wish there weren’t so many of them!

  25. Megan says

How exciting! I think it’s fun (and scary) to move out on your own. I currently live with my parents while I finish my Masters degree. I am a bit like you…I moved to A&M and stayed in a dorm, moved into a house with some roomies, moved out and went inpatient for ED (not as fun), moved home, moved with roomies, moved home…you get the picture. However, I am moving to Austin in January for a new job! Woo hoo! I hope you love your new place!!! (and your boatmeal looks delicious!)

  26. Crystal coppel says

Congrats on the new place! Very exciting! Hopefully you’re still close to your family! Sp I’m curious……why did youre parents bounce you all over the world growing up? I hope you get settled in quick! 🙂

  27. Char @ www.charskitchen.ca says

Oooohhh that is SOOO exciting!! I hate the process of moving, but unpacking is definitely fun! 🙂 I moved out when I was 19, but moved back for the last semester of school and another six months after while I was looking for employment. After I found steady employment, I moved out again & it’s been over a year now since I was at home. I’m really independent, so I enjoy being able to look after myself. Congratulations on your big move, Katie!! And that pumpkin oatmeal looks soooo yummy!!

P.S. I made your cookie pie for the 3rd time last night. Despite claiming he was full, my boyfriend couldn’t resist sneaking a slice 😛 sooooooooo yummy!

  28. Maggie says

I moved out when I was 18 and went to “university”. We don’t call it “college” in Canada 😉 I wanted out asap. I was ready to start my life and be independent. 🙂 And it was awesome. Dorm room first year, house with 8 other girls second year!!!, then I moved in the big city and got an apartment I LOVED, to house me while I continued my studies.

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Yes!! I’m getting settled in, but then I definitely want to bring him over. I will probably bring Henry over sometimes, but I’ll leave him at my parents’ house so he can get a break from Batman’s rambunctiousness! 😉

  29. Jeanna says

Moved out of my parents a week after graduating high school and moved 600 miles away!! Been independent and on my own ever since. Wow going on 20 years. Now I feel old!! Have fun in your new place!!!! I think the best part of moving is the setting up of the house. I love finding places for all of my favorite things-especially the kitchen!!

  30. jo @ including cake says

Yay for you!! moving out is so much fun (well, when you’ve got the initial unpacking out of the way),
I love paiting walls, making bits of furniture, buying cusions and kitcheny bits and colour co-ordinating things. i just like making my mark i guess- but i suppose that has a lot to do with the fact i’m an architect, so always trying to change things!!

  31. Emma (Sweet Tooth Runner) says

CONGRATS!! That’s awesome news!! And you said it wasn’t a big deal pffsh! Moving out HUGE deal! I’m so happy for you! Please take photos of your new place!! 🙂

  32. Sarah says

Hey I just moved into my first apartment with me paying all my own bills and everything too! It’s so weird, right? I’m like…what do I do with all this room?! But I don’t really have much furniture, just ma bed. 🙂 I’m pretty sure my cooking supplies to actual furniture ratio is wayyy uneven. Oh well. If I can’t sit on a comfy couch, I want to at least eat something deeeelicious (like that pumpkin baked oatmeal). And next up is punkin beer with the football game. Pumpkin overload? Nah…

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Haha I hear you… I am so afraid of giving you all pumpkin overload with what I post on my blog. I’m trying to space it out, but then I just keep thinking of new pumpkin recipes, including another one to post tomorrow :-?.

I think I need to get me some pumpkin beer… and then enjoy it while sitting on a cardboard box. You’re so right: who needs furniture?!

      • Sam says

During the next three months, there is no limit to the number of pumpkin recipes that may be put up. It’s the season!

  33. Katie @Nutrition In A Peanut Shell says

    CONGRATS KATIE!
Quick question; isn’t it illegal for them to just leave a note that says “move out we’re bull-dozing your house?” Don’t they have to serve some sort of formal notice?

  34. Kaitlyn@TheTieDyeFIles says

That is exciting news! I moved out when I went to college, and I haven’t ever lived close enough to live home again. Not to mention, my bedroom is now an office…

  35. Celeste says

Congratz on the new place 🙂

I went to boarding school when I was 9, and ‘moved out’ for good when I was 17.

Interesting about moving all over the world, I also had to move around a lot when I was younger, makes it a huge hassle when I am trying to explain where am from to people!

  36. Maya says

Congrats! Very exciting news. You’ll love it. I’d say I have lived on my own since I was 20 senior year, with brief periods of living with family when I was volunteering abroad. My parents already did SO much for me growing up, I was determined to be totally independent the minute that I could barely scrape by. Lots of hours doing dishline in the dining hall…

  37. Stefanie says

That is fun news. I lived on my own for a year while at college but moved back with my parents. There was no jobs where I was and I was done with school. I’m sure you will enjoy being on your own again. 🙂

  38. Ellen says

I liked ya! Should have done that awhile back.
I moved out at 19 to go to school five hours away but then transferred to Washington U in St. Louis and lived a five minute drive from home, which was sort of the perfect amount of closeness at that time. Now I live across the country from my folks but they visit relatively frequently, which is nice.
    Congrats on the new place!

  39. Moni'sMeals says

Congrats Katie, That is life changing news, I get what you are saying for certain! 🙂 How exciting indeed! You can even decorate for Halloween!

So this looks ammmmazing. So perfect. I will try next asap. 🙂

  40. Leanne @ Healthful Pursuit says

Congrats! Moving is FUN! My parents moved us around a lot, but we didn’t move around with world. I moved out of my parents’ house when I was 17. I was still in High school, maintained a full time evening job and lived with a couple of friends downtown. It was great!

  41. Kaila @healthyhelperblog! says

The baked oatmeal looks delish! But so smaaaaalll LOL! That would not fill me up!

Moving is definitely exciting news!! Congrats!

  42. Tami says

I actually got married at 19, that was 32 years ago! We moved to a different State than where we grew up and have moved several times since then. We have lived in CA for the past 22 years and love it! Even so I still love to go visit my parents and stay in their house! There is something comforting about going home.

  43. Josie says

Congrats on moving! I didn’t know you went to SMU! I graduated from there in ’07. I miss Dallas so much. No wonder you have easy access to hard-to-find ingredients, you are right there near my beloved Central Market and not far from Whole Foods. Love you blog and the creative ways to help satisfy my demanding sweet tooth!
    Go Ponies!

  44. Amber K says

I rarely moved as a kid. I lived in one house until I was 14 and then that second one until I was 19. When I was 20 I moved in with my now-husband, then we did some apartment hopping until we found a good fit. I personally hate moving on the one hand because I had how discombobulated it makes me feel. But I LOVE getting the fresh start and giving everything I own a good clean for a good reason. I can never seem to convince myself to completely dismantle things to clean them when I’m just going to be putting them right back where I got them – lol!

  45. ~Jessica~ says

I don’t know what would be worse…being forced out of an apartment because they were going to build a library there, or having that library named after George Bush *shudders*.

I’m glad the news/change was a good one!

I still live with my parents and always have done. I might be 25, but sadly my mental health issues are too severe for me to live alone, and I can’t see anyone tolerating me apart from my Mum and Dad. I need someone around when I’m at manic or depressive extremes, otherwise I’d end up hurting myself somehow. I do feel like a complete failure for being unable to live alone and be independent though, and worry a lot about what will happen when my parents aren’t around. I love them so much, and they’re more like best friends than parents now.

    xxx

  46. Jess says

congrats; you have done a lot of moving; my mother did some moving b/c her dad was in the arm, but not that much. i might move out after i graduate 4 year college. we might even move to another state. i’m not sure if i’d move with my parents, or move out west… (currently on the east coast, hoping to end up on the west coast.

  47. Dalai Lina says

I moved out at 18 – from the San Francisco Bay Area to Nashville TN for school. What a change! Then to Atlanta, and last stop Kansas City MO. Not nearly as exciting as your childhood cities!

  48. Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says

Congrats on the new place! I lived away from home all throughout college, then moved back home for a year, then lived on my own for a year, then moved back home for a year, and now I live with my husband! I’ve been back & forth a lot, so I’m hoping we stay in our apartment for no more/less than 2 years!

  49. Kris (everyday oats) says

    YUM 😛
Congrats on the big move!! My brother went to SMU too, and he also lived in the apartments that were demolished for the library!

  50. Rachel Lauren says

Congrats on the move! That’s awesome!! Did batman move in with you?

I went to college near my parents so I stayed at home and commuted. I moved out at 23 or 24 and moved a few times within 4 years. Now I own my own house with the help of my parents and I have an awesome roommate. I love my house!

  51. Anonymous says

Home should always be your safe place. In time you’ll come to appreciate your parents on a different level – and they with you as well.
Mazel Tov! Yes – part Jewish – somewhere amongst my heritage 😉
    Your on your way! 🙂

  52. Vanessa @ L'épice de la Vie says

I moved out at 19 when I graduated high school and went off to college. I ended up hating the school and dropped out at the end of the first semester. I moved back home while I took a semester off and that did not go well. My parents and I get along really well, but as my dad says, two adult women cannot live under the same roof. LOL. I moved back onto campus after transferring to a new university, then got my own apartment 2 semesters later. But the apartment wasn’t going to be ready until a month after the new semester started, so I lived at home once again for about 3 weeks. Now I’ve been living in my own apartment for two years and unless it’s a significant other, I’m not sure I could go back to having a roommate!

  53. Albizia says

Congrats! I hope you’ve found the perfect little place for you!

I’ve been away from home since I was 18 and, honestly, at the beginning I really hated it. Mainly because the dorm sucked big time but… Yeah, I hated it. Now I am living at the other end of the world and even though I like being independent, I sometimes miss home. My mom cooking, my dog jumping in my bed in the morning, watching TV with dad. You can’t have this without your family around.

  54. katie @KatieDid says

Congrats on the big move out, that’s sooo exciting. Once the annoying actual moving is over it’s so much fun sprucing up the place, settling in and decorating. And living with roommates is the best, I have 2 right now and I can’t imagine a day not living with friends!

  55. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says

Congrats on your big move! I knew you were moving. I just…knew it. When I thought well what news could she have that she’d be sharing on the blog like this; the first thing that came to my mind was you got a new pad. Congrats!

I moved out when I was 16 and went to college never looked back. Been bouncing around the country and have lived in 10 places in 10 years but San Diego is home and will be, forever, if I have any say so.

Saw your food on TS this morning. Congrats!

  56. Elizabeth says

Congrats on your new place! I just started college but I live with my parents. There are pros and cons.

As for pumpkin and coconuts, there’s this Brazilian dessert called doce de abobora, and it’s made with pumpkin and coconut. So I usually add coconut to my pumpkin oatmeal:) It goes perfect together.

  57. Jennifer JCD says

Congratulations on the big news!! Did Batman move in with you too? I wish you all the best in your new place and hope you enjoy it!!

We bought a house when we got engaged and I moved in when we got married, so I was 22 at the time. Both of our parents only live a stone’s throw away, which is great because we can see them as often as we like and still maintain our independence. I love living in our own house for so many reasons!

  58. Sara Grambusch says

Congrats on moving! That is a big deal and always a great opportunity for change. I moved away from home not until I was 20, for graduate school. Now I’m 26 and moving back, hilariously, but it’s good to always have somewhere to call home 🙂

  59. Alicia @healthyhomemade says

Well, this is big, exciting news! There is nothing like that feeling of independence from being on your own. Congratulations are definitely in order. 🙂
I just turned 30 and I still live with my mum. I have only lived on my own once around five years ago and that was the best feeling in the world! I can hardly wait until I am ready to take that step again.

  60. Kit-Kat says

Good for you on your new home!
I still live with my parents, and probably won’t move out for a while yet. I love my family so much!
I had oatmeal this morning, too, although it was not baked. I did add pumpkin pie spice, and a dollap of your “cream”. Heaven! A perfect Sunday morning breakfast, accompanied with a small dish of warmed pear slices and cinnamon

  61. Gudbjorg says

I moved away for college. That was when I was 20 years old.

Now, when I go back for holidays, it feels weird living with them again.
Even though I love my parents, it just doesnt feel the same.

(I enjoy the home cooked meals though very much! )

  62. Anna says

Congratulations on the new place! I hope you are able to get settled quickly. I know it always feel more like home once your things are out and pictures are up on the walls.

I lived with my parents the first two years in college and then I moved out my Junior year. I have had to move a lot due to different roommates and there were a few summers I was living in my parents house with boxes which was interesting 🙂 Since I just graduated and got my first job, I feel like my move in August was a bigger step then my other moves.

I moved out when I turned 18 for university. My mom got rid of my bed, haha. When i visit at home I have a mattress on the floor of my old room, now used for storage!

    Oh well.

    That breakfast looks divine!

I moved out in August 2010, a few months after I graduated from college. I still LOVE going home when I get the chance though. I’m such a homebody!

I moved out of home for various reasons at 16 years old. A bit young I know, but it was right for me and my mum at the time. I did have an ex bf who didnt move out of home until a week before he was 30 though.. I thought that was a bit much! and a massve hint about the type of character he was haha

Hi Katie, do you remember me? 🙂
I’m Italian and here in Italy you often find graduated and post graduated boys and girls living with parents. Ok, it’s beautiful to stay at home with mom and dad, I don’t recriminate this trend, but I don’t understand how some friend of mine don’t feel the need to move out of home… I’m 30 (yes…I’m old…) and I live for my own even if so near my parents. Love living alone and love coming my childhood home visiting mom and dad. Anyway I think there isn’t just one right choice and we have to make what we find really fit for us and for our life. So good luck, Katie! Can’t wait awesome recipes you’ll find out your new kitchen! Chocolate cheers!

I lived with my parents until my marriage. I still enjoy staying with them whenever I can. Independence is good, but what is life without loved ones around. I would rather live with my parents than some room-mate or friends. They have sacrificed so much to make me who I am.. and the least I can do is be around as they are getting older.

FYI. I am an Indian and children live with parents and tc of them in almost all Asian countries. I think the term “independence” is too blown up in the US.

I love my parents with all my heart and I’m grateful for their love and every single thing they did and still doing for me. I agree with you: the least a daughter/son can do is take care of them as they getting older and living so near (barely closed) “their” home ( “our” is better, since I still consider it as one of my home, because I grew up there and mom and dad live there) it’s perfect for me. I couldn’t live too far from them, I’d miss them too much. When I wrote I find strange some friend of mine don’t feel the need of living for their own, actually I didn’t mean the fact itself of living with parents, but their attitude in “sitting”, and living without planning the future and trying to build something in and for their life. I enlarged the matter but my English knowledge is at a basic level and it’s so difficult for me to explain clearly what I mean and I would say!

I agree… I don’t know why people look down upon kids who move back in with their parents after graduating college. Personally, I adore my parents and want to spend as much time with them while we have the chance. All too soon, parents get older and you don’t want to look back and wish you’d spent more time with them.

I never officially moved back in after I left for college. And about a month after graduating, I moved a few states away. Have to admit…always miss home.

We moved around a lot growing up too…and I have to say, I still crave a move every once in awhile. There’s something really refreshing about purging your stuff, and then creating a brand new space with new potential.

Yay for you! Exciting news..I moved out my freshman year of college, but lived with siblings until my senior year, then also moved back in with the fam…then finally, on my own for grad school, which was awesome!

    Have so much fun!

Congrats on your new place! I lived away from home my sophmore through senior year and then moved back to my college town 3 months later. I do miss being home, but there’s nothing quite like living on your own.

  71. Liz says

Congratulations on the new apartment! You have lived in a lot of different places!

I’m still living with my parents, but Mike moved in with us a year ago and we are working on getting our own place now. I’ve never lived completely by myself (other than while house sitting for a week or two).

    Katie,

I think you should try and come up with a version of York peppermint patty’s (or pearsons chocolate mint patty)! I have been craving them like crazy and I want to find out how to make my own! Also, a form of lemon bar would be really fun to see (even if it has NOTHING to do with chocolate)… 🙂 Just some ideas, although I am certain you get tons already

      Hi Annie!

I have a recipe I haven’t posted yet… If you try them, do let me know how they turn out!

      YORKS:

      filling:

      2 T coconut butter
      1/8 tsp pure peppermint extract
      1 1/2 tsp agave
      2 tsp water
      coating:

      2 T coconut oil (unrefined)
      1/4c cocoa powder
      2 tsp water
      2 T agave

I used candy molds, but you could use cupcake liners if you’d prefer. Just scoop 1/2 the coating in each, then all the filling, then top with more coating. Freeze. 🙂

I just bought my first place ever. I lived with my mother until then and I am 29. I had my own apartments when I went away for college and then lived back home until I had enough money for my own place.
I love living on my own, minus the fact that there is a lot of work to be done on the place, but I had to get out of my mom’s before I was 30, even at 29 it had been way too long.
