Easy: just add a little canned pumpkin and some pumpkin pie spices to your oatmeal. I’ve done it and it’s great. Also add sweetener.

Well, in their defense, if they DID get the idea from me, I’m betting the guy never told them where HE got the idea, so they probably don’t even know it was my idea!
I wish we could patent ideas, but sadly you can’t. I guess, on the bright side, at least it means a bunch more people are being introduced to oatmeal’s awesomeness.

so I would like to make a strawberry night-before-oats recipe. I have mccann’s quick cooking rolled oats( 1/2 cup serving? too much?) or bob’s red mill traditional rolled oats (box says 1/2 cup + 1 cup water, but I only want 1/3 cup, it’s much thicker and richer.) and just frozen strawberries. My intent is to have the oatmeal chilled or room temperature the next morning with the strawberries nice and pureed or small chunks in it without having to heat the whole thing again. I don’t have a single serving blender or small enough food processor to just do a couple strawberries the night before, although I could try… What would your suggestion be to come out with a decently strawberry tasting chilled oatmeal? :3 I might add some vanilla stevia drops or cook’s vanilla powder for flavor too. should I put those in when I cook it? or before eating? Since I won’t be reheating, maybe just a few seconds to mix it in but keep it cool… my blender is a big oster glass thing by the way! A bit difficult to use for just single serving things ): I might want to put all the oatmeal in if it’s not too thick and blend it, but I don’t want the oatmeal completely pudding and I -do- want the strawberries very pureed. Ahh, confusion!

      Hey Emma,
I’ve actually never made a strawberry blended oatmeal concoction like the one you’re describing… you’ll have to experiment! Edible experiments can be fun! 🙂
Let me know what you end up with… it sounds like the beginning of something yummy!

OMG You have opened my eyes to oatmeal!
I’m in Australia and it’s Winter right now, so I’ve been enjoying hot bowls of your oatmeal every morning. This morning I thought I’d try mixing oats with frozen raspberries, banana, linseed meal and just a drop or two of maple syrup… Hot banana rocks!

Keep up the good work!! 🙂

Every single morning I put a bowl of old fashioned oats in the microwave. While they are cooking i mash a banana on a paper plate, sprinkle cinnamon on it, add walnuts and a pad of smart balance. I scrape it into the oatmeal when its done and add a dash of sugar free syrup or honey. I love my oatmeal! My husband says this is why my cholesterol is good lol.

For oats not for breakfast, check out the recipe for Golden oats from Quaker. Oatmeal is coated with raw egg, then cooked to a fluffy grain more like rice – a very nice change of pace.

I’m just wondering if you can give me your opinion on combining fruits and oats. I notice a lot of people adding only 1/2 a banana or 1/2 an apple to their oats and I don’t get why they can’t have a whole apple or banana with their oats, is it because of the high sugar/carbs content? Hmmm. I’d rather skimp on the oats then on the fruits. Why is it done like that? Thanks.

Oh my gooosh ! Katie I love these recipies and you for making them, especially the chocolate oatmeal ones. They kind of remind me of what we call in the Philippines, chomporado ,which main ingredients are; Tablea (which is basically bakers chocolate sort of), sticky rice , coconut milk, sugar, and sometimes a little vanilla. Recently I made a healthier version using brown rice instead of sticky rice and stevia instead of sugar..and it is still SOOO good. So now you kind of inspired me to use oatmeal for at try! Thanks a bunch and keep posting awesome recipies!

Thank-you for forever changing my life for the better. This trick makes the world a better place to live. I always find that the 1/2 cup serving of oats to be so measly.
I usually bulk up my oats with a bunch of chopped fruit and berries, and usually mix in a mashed banana often with cocoa powder or peanut flour, Amazing Grass, Protein powder or even pudding instead of the banana. This trick however will further increase my oaty indulgence!! I am forever grateful!
One thing I have found too, is that oat bran actually makes a greater yield than rolled or quick oats. I like to vary my ‘oatmeal’ too by using oat bran, quick oats, rolled oats, barley flakes, steel cut oats, oat groats…. Once you get going with the oatmeal ideas it’s near impossible to stop… but heck, that’s not a bad thing is it!
Oh yeah, I also like my oatmeal cold. I usually cook it up, then spread it over a plate in a thin layer and stick it in the fridge or freezer, that way I don’t have to wait long for my oats to get cold, and if I keep a banana in the fridge, then mixing that in keeps things cold too! My next ideas to try are using applesauce instead of the mashed banana, and stewed rhubarb.
Oh yeah, I also just saw this on the Hungry-Girl website (I saw your’s first!), but noticed that she recommends to use 2 cups liquid to 1/2 cup oats…. do you think this would be too runny? I like my oats really thick! And will this trick work with any kind of oats (Quick, old fashioned rolled, steel-cut etc.)?

    Hi there,

I hope you can give me a suggestion. I absolutely hate the texture of oatmeal, but I don’t mind it when it’s more on the crunchy side. When it’s soft and mushy like baby food, I seriously gag. Can you help me determine what the liquid to oat ratio should be? I use old fashioned oats.

Our favorite way to eat oatmeal is to pour raw oatmeal in a bowl, add chocolate milk, eat.
    Cheap, nutritious and fast…
The kids like it and it has become a tradition on camping trips especially the wilderness ones…

I tried one of your “boatmeal” recipes this morning using Steel Cut oats instead, and they were still a little too crunchy for me. Do you recommend simply baking a little longer or is more liquid needed? Thanks!

P.S. My sister and I LOVE your blog. I’m completely addicted and am on here multiple times a day trying to decided which recipe to try next. Keep up the amazing work!!

    Katie,
I had my in-laws over for breakfast today, and I made “boatmeals” in little cupcake wrappers. Since I used a muffin pan, each batch made exactly two. I ended up with two of every single flavor! The chocolate chip (with banana) was my favorite. Everyone loved it. Thanks for your recipes 🙂

Can you do a carrot cake version?

I made up my own, using minimum water/milk for maximum cake like texture, using grated carrot, chai spice, cinnamon, almonds and pecans, raisins, and honey. Mixed all together, cooled a bit (it gets more cake like texture as it cools) then I topped it with almond butter and pineapple Greek yogurt (like frosting!)

You guys should try it, it’s amazing! (Sub agave and vegan yogurt etc)

    Hi Katie,

I LOVE oatmeal and I can’t wait to try these recipes. I’m partly of Scottish Gael extraction so I grew up with hot oatmeal, or porridge as we call it, in the mornings too. I’m Canadian and there’s nothing better for breakfast on those cold wintery mornings than a hot bowl of porridge with brown sugar. I used to pour some milk into the bowl to help smooth the oatmeal and because I loved the contrast between the cold milk and the hot porridge. I’m just starting to research veganism so I think an easy way to start would be to substitute cows milk for almond milk or even coconut milk. I’m looking forward to trying it out.

Thank you a million times for this beautiful blog.

Where’s the oatalicious love <\3……? I love your site, this was actually the first vegan recipe site that I EVER found. I fell took, line and sinker for it 🙂

I was hoping you wouldn't mind adding some new porridge/ oatmeal recipes to the site. I've been looking for unique, but yet easy ideas. I've found lots from, 'oh she glows', 'garden of vegan' and 'peachypalte'. But yours are my absolute fave!!! No doubt about it. Can't wait till the book comes out. I may live in Northern Ireland and won't be able to get it………..hopefully I can say thank you Amazon creators once it is released.

Ok, so I’ve always disliked oatmeal as a breakfast food. I can handle baked things but other than that I have a hard time with the texture. I have been thinking about trying it again and have been putting it off until I saw this pinned on pinterest this morning. I tried 5 min chocolate oatmeal. It tastes great but I can’t even finish it (I usually don’t eat breakfast) Will it be ok covered and in the fridge until tomorrow?

I used to have a recipe for Oatmeal Breakfast Squares that were a REALLY good make-ahead breakfast. I remember that they had no flour and no sugar. The sweetener was honey, the liquid was applesauce. I don’t know why they were called squares, because it was made in an 8 x 8 pan. I always had them with some yogurt and fruit. Do you know of anything like this?

    Hello Katie,

I’ve been making “oatmeal puddings” since I was little (back in the 90s) where I would simply mix yogurt with oats and fruit and let sit overnight, but you have come up with many ideas I never did. Do you have an index? I see hyperlinks for coconut cream pie oatmeal and cinnamon, but the links send me to a different recipe. I’m a total chocoholic too so glad to see so many of your chocolate recipes. Can’t wait for your next recipes
