Don’t forget the chocolate chips
My favorite chocolate chips, that I use almost exclusively in my own recipes, are Enjoy Life Mini Chocolate Chips.
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ve probably noticed I love to add mini chocolate chips to recipes, both for taste and presentation.
Just look at this gorgeous dark chocolate Brownie Baked Oatmeal!
It’s much easier to spread mini chips out evenly in baked goods so you get chocolate in every single bite, whereas with larger chocolate chips you might get one bite with chocolate and then another with no chocolate at all.
People often write in to ask me how I can eat chocolate chips as a vegan.
The Enjoy Life chips I recommended above actually are vegan, non-GMO, and free from 14 common allergens, including gluten, soy, eggs, dairy, and nuts. (They also come in Semi-Sweet Mega Chunks and Dark Chocolate Morsels.) You can find the brand in many regular grocery stores or online.
Breakfast on the go
Of the thousands of recipes I’ve posted here on the blog, my mom will tell you that these breakfast squares are her all-time favorite.
She calls them “boatmeal” (for baked oatmeal) and will often text me on the weekend that she’s made another batch to take into work every morning during the week.
Because leftovers freeze well, you can easily plan ahead and freeze whatever you aren’t going to eat within 4-5 days, to keep an instant healthy breakfast on hand for rushed mornings or any time you don’t feel like cooking.
Step One: Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
Step Two: Spread into a parchment-lined 9×13 pan.
Step Three: Bake at 350 F, then slice into bars or squares, and breakfast is ready for the whole week!
Above – watch the video how to make chocolate chip breakfast squares
Chocolate Chip Breakfast Squares To-Go

- 2 2/3 cup applesauce or mashed banana
- 3/4 cup water
- 1 tsp salt

- 1/4 cup oil, nut butter, or additional water
- pinch stevia or 1/2 cup pure maple syrup, honey, or agave

- 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a 9×13 pan with parchment. In a large bowl, stir all ingredients until well-mixed. Smooth into the pan. Sprinkle additional chocolate chips on top if desired. Bake on the center rack 28 minutes, then do not open the oven door but turn off the heat and let sit in the closed oven an additional 20 minutes. Slice into bars or squares. Leftovers can be refrigerated 3-4 days, or freeze the bars to have on hand any time you need an instant healthy breakfast you can take on the go!View Nutrition Facts

Diane says
I work from home and will be making these today! As for the chocolate chips, they would go in all of my baked goods, but my favorite way to use them is to put some in a small bowl and then dip a spoonful of peanut butter into the bowl for what I guess is a deconstructed peanut butter cup. Yep, I’m lazy!

I have been making your different boatmeal recipes for several years. I always add mini chocolate chips to recipes as I have found you can use less and yet get more chocolate in each bite. Since my son is allergic to dairy (protein, not just lactose intolerant) we were thrilled when we found Enjoy Life products. We started with the candy bars for Easter and Halloween, then our store started carrying the chocolate chips! We enjoy all the products we’ve tried. Cookies are our favorite since we have to be gluten and dairy free. Enjoy Life tastes great and yet doesn’t have the ingredients many people are allergic to.
Ariane says
I would use them in a pumpkin recipe. The combination of pumokin and chocolate is great
Rita A says
If I did not make these amazing looking oatmeal bars, I would be making oatmeal chocolate chip cookies!
Dana says

Alicia says
We LOVE Enjoy Life Chocolate! We sprinkle the mini chips on top of my sons hot oatmeal in the AM as well as use them for all kinds of granola bars, baked oatmeal cups and, of course, COOKIES! We like to eat the larger chunks directly from the bag in place of other chocolate treats that my son can’t have. I buy the snack packs for my son’s teacher to keep on hand so he can have a treat when he can’t have the party or bday treat brought in (95% he can’t have). So appreciate having a great allergy friendly AND vegan brand to rely on that tastes awesome!
Hannah Oliver says

I would love to win the Enjoy Life chocolate chips!! They are the only ones I use. My 2.5 year old has many food allergies and loves to eat a few of these as a special treat. I also use them in cookies, brownies, and melt them to eat with a spoon 🙂
Quick question about the breakfast squares–what texture are they? Similar to an oatmeal cookie or more like a bowl of oatmeal?
They look amazing. Thanks!
Jason Sanford says
They are soft but firm. The closest thing I can think of at the moment is french toast texture. Something between that and oatmeal, but definitely not hard like a cookie.
Wanda Horne says
Straight out of the bag and for pancakes for my grandchildren(and me)! 🙂
Lauren says
I would definitely bake some of my favorite chocolate goodies from your website, but to be honest, a fair amount of these are going to go straight into my mouth!

Enjoy life chocolate is awesome! As a teenager with a limited baking budget, they (sadly) don’t make it into my family’s pantry often. I would use tuck them in raspberries and dates, use them in cookie dough balls, dot peanut butter pies with them, add then to ice cream (especially cookie dough ice cream), use then to decorate gingerbread people, and make the best vegan double chocolate milkshakes. I’d bake chocolate chip cookies to wow my non vegan family and friends.

I had no idea Enjoy Life had the “dark” morsels! These are my favorite brand vegan chocolate chips because I think they taste like M&M’s for some weird reason. I’d use them to make sea salt chocolate chip cookies, which I make way too often! Mostly I’d eat them straight out of the bag though because that’s what I usually do when I’m craving chocolate or something sweet and I don’t want the heaviness of a full dessert. It really takes the edge off : )

Hello Katie,
Thanks for the yummy recipe!!. You are my goto blogger for all my baking recipes.
I have been using Enjoy Life products for all my baking recipes. I use the mini chips for cakes, muffins, cupcakes, pancakes, brownie, blondies etc and the mega chips to make chocolate fudges and the kiddos eat straight from the packet as they are healthy and less sugary.
Thanks Enjoy Life for making such wonderful healthy, guilt free products.
Have a wonderful day Katie, looking forward to more yummy recipes.
Thanks,
Ranjitha

These minis are my favorite too since you can use fewer with just as much chocolate impact! And having enough chocolate chips to test out a year’s worth of recipes… heaven.
Ok, and I’d probably also eat a few and throw them in coffee 😉
Gina says
We’d put them in waffle & pancake mix, sprinkled on cupcake fosting, ice cream, mixed with mini marshmallows, sprinkled on sliced bananas, mix them into a bowl of oatmeal, sprinkle them on a mug of whipped cream topped hot cocoa, the options are endless for these yummy little chips!
Vee Jones says
These chocolate chips would mainly be used for eating straight out of the bag truth be told, however, my goal would be to make several batches of chocolate chip cookies. Since becoming a vegan, my husband does not get many sweets especially chocolate chip cookies, a must for everyone regardless of diet.

Justine Madigan says
And I would put some in a big ol’ jar and have the kids at my church guess how many were in there, and bestow the lucky child who was closest with the whole blessed jar. A lot of the kids at my church have allergies, so it would make them so happy!

Enjoy Life morsels, mini chips, cookies and bars are a staple at our house. I keep them on hand to support my vegetarian college student who has dairy, peanut and tree nut allergies. I get these because if she eats chocolate with dairy in it (which she will if these are not around) she has terrible stomach pain for days. Since she must have chocolate, we must have Enjoy Life! I follow a vegan diet and use them in cookies, mug muffins, oatmeal and sometimes eat them straight out of the bag as well. We like the Enjoy Life dark chocolate morsels/mini chips, the Soft-baked Double Chocolate Brownie cookies, Cocoa Loco Chewy Bars and the dark chocolate bars! (o:

Carrie Ferguson says
I would make cookies with the chocolate chips! And eat them straight from the bag.

Just took these out of the oven and they’re so good. Used 1/2 banana and 1/2 applesauce, and 1/2 pb powder 1/2 pb in place of oil, stevia in place of sugar. If I had a year supply of the enjoy life chips, I’d use them in everything because chocolate makes healthier substitutions not so bad. I love using the mini chips in 2 bite blondies!
Kathleen says
I would use Enjoy Life chips in banan bread, tons of Katie’s recipes, eaten with Fluff because it tastes like a 3 Musketeers. I’d eat them plain, in pancakes, muffins…so many things. I need to win for all my chip eating!! 🙂
Elizabeth Dultz says
I’m a social worker so I’m on the go all day at work. I absolutely need my homemade granola to get through the day! I mix various nuts, coconut, dried unsweetened fruit, and whatever else I have on hand so it’s always a new taste—and chocolate chips are my *favorite* add-in when I’m feeling indulgent. A batch of granola is the first thing I’d make with these chocolate chips!
L. Y. Tin says
What wouldn’t i use the Enjoy life chocolate chips in would be easier to answer. I wouldn’t use it for dogs.

I would use them in cookies. I was so pleased when they came out because they are dairy free and I can’t have dairy. Yay! They taste great. I really like the little ones – some cookies get overwhelmed with the bigger ones, not that too much chocolate is bad!
This recipe looks great – I’m going to try it!
Karen Thomas says

I’m kinda late to post but my 1st inspiration for using Enjoy Live mini chocolate chips is sprinkled on pancakes while on the griddle. Since we’ve become Vegan about 8 months ago, incorporating vegan chocolate chips into many recipes or using new recipes as an excuse to consume chocolate chips has been a common trend ?❤️. My husband sneaks them out of our jar all the time. Haha. I’d go crazy and use the chocolate chips in everything! My morning oatmeal (and my afternoon oatmeal… and my post dinner snack oatmeal… I’m obsessed), cookies, banana bread, melting them down and using them to coat bliss balls, on top of cakes before I bake them, with a spoonful of peanut butter, with mashed banana… and that’s all I can name off the top of my head. Oh, and obviously straight out of the bag!
Where I live there never seems to be any vegan brands of chocolate chips (even the dark ones have milk in them!!!) so whenever I bake I have to use shards of normal chocolate, which is sad because I want to eat the normal chocolate plain too! I mean I also want to eat chocolate chips plain too, but they are purpose built for baking so I don’t feel as sad using those when I bake compared to when I use an ENTIRE LINDT BLOCK in my chocolate chip cookies…. ?? (the cookies still tasted amazing but it just feels so wrong)

My husband started medical school a couple of months ago and is often on campus for long stretches of time. Rather than spend on costly/less nutritious snacks, I decided to whip up homemade granola bars and hard-boiled eggs for him at the start of each week. After I put chocolate chips in his bars once, he began requesting them every week—which is tasty, but an extra cost. So, it goes without saying that this is not only a perfect recipe to incorporate into our snack rotation, but also a perfect giveaway for our new tradition!

Yum, I make baked oatmeal with loads of brown sugar, I’ll have to try yours as I’d like to cut back on sugar! See if it flies with the family. Might have to call it boatmeal as you mentioned so they don’t think they’re getting something else. Although I can’t help but picture ‘boatmeal’ as made in those corn shaped tins with little sails on them.
One of my favorite ways to use choc chips is as an easy, allergy friendly, not to mention delicious, frosting to brownies. Just sprinkle them on top when the brownie is still warm and spread when melted.

I would make chocolate mousse with aquafaba, sugar, and melted chocolate chips. I would make some fudge – I have a few different fudge recipes I want to try – I just made fudge last week with vegan condensed milk and Enjoy Life chocolate chips. I would make a big batch of meringues (from aquafaba and sugar) and then dip them in melted chocolate chips and add some sprinkles on top. The other day I dipped some frozen banana pieces in melted chocolate (with a little bit of coconut oil) and then covered with shredded coconut – it was so good. I would make some vegan truffles – like Oreo Truffles or strawberry creme filled truffles. Obv I’d make the chocolate chip breakfast squares on this page. I’d make a black and white vegan cheese ball (which essentially is cashew and coconut oil based, then half dipped in melted chocolate). And the list goes on…. I mean, what can’t you dip in chocolate?!

Ugh everything you make looks so amazing!? If I had a year supply of chocolate chips, at least half of those chips wouldn’t even make it into my vegan baking. I’m such a chocolate addict I end up eating half the bag while I bake ? #CantStopWontStop #ChocolateIsMyNumberOne ?♥️?
Rachel F says

Danielle says
I would definitely eat most of the chips straight out of the bag (who can resist?!) but I might be able to spare a few to make some vegan chocolate chip pancakes! They were my childhood favourite! This recipe for chocolate chip baked oat bars looks good too, going to have to try it soon.

Jessica says
My mom was always a chocoholic (she even did paid testing for super fancy chocolate companies!) and a baker, but she is now in advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and can’t bake anymore. She can’t even speak understandably now, but one thing that lifts her spirits daily is chocolate. When she’s crying and having a meltdown, chocolate to the rescue!
I bake for her, too, and chocolate chips get expensive. With that many chocolate chips, I could bake for her all the time and keep her happy (and healthy… she got down to 90 pounds for a while).
samrah says
I would love to use them in making my for ever love brownes.. hope i win ..
Haley groesbeck says

Jason Sanford says
Hi Jen, we always test every variation that’s posted. (Katie personally uses the oil or nut butter if making them for herself, usually either almond butter or coconut oil.)

I bought a bag recently to deliver to a friend who has a lot of family with allergies, because she’d brought her dad home for the end of his cancer battle, and her house was full of visitors. Her brother, visiting from Japan, just needed some chocolate, and my Enjoy Life chocolate chunks came to the rescue! Thank you for easy indulgences in the midst of difficult struggles! ❤️

In that chickpea brownie pie thing you recently posted (people here are obsessed with it!). Pumpkin muffins. Often just straight up with plain Greek yogurt. I started making coconut milk ice cream- the mini chips are perfect for that too. These baked oatmeal things look so interesting too- excited to try it!

We absolutely LOVE Enjoy Life mini chips and have been using them for years!!! My favorite way to use them is is vegan chocolate chip oatmeal and nut cookies. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/240591/vegan-chocolate-chip-oatmeal-and-nut-cookies/ However, we love to use them over homemade vegan ice cream, non-vegan ice cream, muesli, strait out of the bag, or in any recipe calling for chocolate chips. I don’t use any other kind! These chocolate chips make a success out of any recipe. I let my 3 year-old, over-the-top-extremely-picky-eater granddaughter, try Enjoy Life mini chips one day, and now I have to hide them in the freezer because she asks for them all the time, and we would never be able to afford to keep up with her affinity for them!!!
I made these chocolate chip breakfast bars and they have a good flavor, but the texture is not as pleasing as some bars I’ve had. This is probably because of the lack of leavening in them. Probably anything with Enjoy Life chocolate chips is going to be good, but this recipe is not one of my favorites on this web site. I give it 3 1/2 stars.
Pam Howell says
I would use them in cookies, brownies, chocolate banana bread, and lots of other recipes. I love chocolate chips.
Lorraine says

Faith Ralphs says

Oh my.goodness, is this competition worldwide? The first thing I’d make is your chocolate mug cake or some chocolate chip cookies. They don’t seem to make vegan chocolate chips in Australia so I always have to break up a cooking chocolate by hand and we all know most of that ends up in my tummy.

Not sure if the contest is still going on, but contest or no contest, I use the Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips all of the time. I’ve made homemade granola bars, muffins, oatmeal, but one of my favorites is probably as a topping for smoothie bowls. It adds that nice touch of a sweet treat. This recipe looks great, and I look forward to trying it tonight! I don’t know if I have ripe bananas, so I think I’ll try adding the equivalent measurement in canned pumpkin because I already have an open can. Thinking this will make pumpkin chocolate chip squares and hoping for a delicious outcome!

Chocolate Covered Katie says
Sorry have not tried! Be sure to report back if you experiment 🙂
Makayla says
Hey Katie! So I tried this recipe this morning and doubled it. It came out great, but the middle is still a bit mushy. So I wanted to know if when they’re refrigerated would they firm up and taste even better? Please note that I’m not a vegan or vegetarian but I’m trying to eat healthier, but your recipes are making it hard lol. Awaiting your response.
Jason Sanford says
Hi! Sometimes doubling recipes doesn’t work, or at least often they’ll need more baking time. So that sounds like what might be the case here. Can you bake them longer? If not, refrigerating overnight will definitely firm them up – be sure to report back tomorrow if you remember, as I’m curious to see if that works!
Jason

Cynthia says
First, I will admit I didn’t read through all the comments since most were about chocolate chips. So I apologize if the answer is in the comments. I’ve made this recipe a few times trying different techniques (with different oats, baking for longer). The bars always come out under baked in the middle. Is that what the texture is supposed to be like or am I doing something wrong? They’re tasty, but dense; which I find a little heavy in my belly for the work I do (I walk A LOT for work).
Jason Sanford says
Hi yes they are supposed to be soft! Maybe try doing half a recipe but still in the 9×13, and they will be thinner and thus less soft?
Jason
New England Flybaby says
Hi – Do you grease the parchment paper, and also is the nutritional info for the version with just the water, or does it include the oil or nut butter? Thanks!
Jason Sanford says
No need to grease! 🙂
glenda says
I made the Chocolate Chip Breakfast Squares To-Go. They are delicious but the texture of mine , although they do hold together, is squishy and soft. Is that how they are supposed to be or did I do something wrong?
Thanks for sharing your fun recipes! I’ve used several.
Jason Sanford says
Hi! Yes they are supposed to be soft 🙂
Jason

Could you please provide me the measuremenrs of this recipe in grams? For conveinience, omit the tablespoon/ teaspoon ingredients. Thanks.

I would use these to mix into granola and to make cookies for my grandkids

Angela phillips says
J would definitely make these breakfast bars! Also there is a vegan oatmeal cookie recipe I love to make with these 🙂
Dana St Gemme says
Oh my!!! I’m not sure if I would make the brownie batter , oatmeal chocolate chip breakfast bars or deep dish cookie pie!! So many delicious things to make or just eat them straight up!
Lisa Eve says
My nephew has severe allergies to dairy and nuts, so these chocolate chips have been our go to for making him home baked treats. We use them in everything! I just recently moved to the Netherlands and have to fill my suitcase with these on our return trips back home to the states.
Kathryn says
I’m going to make the breakfast bars tomorrow and I would love the free chocolate to make more of these recipes
Brittany says
This may sound like a stupid question, but can you put the pinch of stevia into a measurement? About how much would you use? Thank you!
Jason Sanford says
Not a stupid question! It just depends on the brand as well as the type of stevia being used and if it’s pure or if it’s cut with other ingredients. Just use the amount your package says is equivalent to the amount of sugar called for in a recipe. https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/stevia-conversion-chart/
Liz says
What can’t you make with chocolate!! I’d use them for the usual stuff like brownies, cookies, cakes, breads like banana or zucchini (got to get some veggies in there), frostings, ganache, making my own chocolate-almond candy, I’d use it for meals like overnight oats, porridge, chocolate hummus, and mole (normally a sauce for chicken but I’d use it for beans). I’d probably use it regularly for hot chocolate, sweet potato brownies, chocolate nice cream, and eating it straight out of the bag. What can I say–it makes me happy. Even if this contest is over, I’m glad to express my feeling about wonderful chocolate that’s vegan friendly!

Hi – I was so excited to try these but they came out with a really gummy texture. I used mostly applesauce and about 1/2 cup of banana (based on what I had). Everything else was the same. Is this how they were supposed to turn out? I expected either cake like or chewy (like a soft granola bar). Would love your thoughts on how to fix! I really want to like these as a healthy go-to breakfast for the family.
Samantha says
Can I use quick steel cut oats in the place of rolled oats in the bars?
Jason Sanford says
We have not tried, but be sure to report back if you experiment!

Myrla Vasquez says
Hi I’m one that likes to freeze smoothies and iced coffees and I think some chocolate chips whipped up in them would be pretty interesting .
Cheri says
I made the Chocolate Chip Breakfast Squares To-Go and they were very sweet, especially for breakfast. They also were spongy. Your look like more like cake, I followed your recipe to a T. I used all organic food. Did I do something wrong or is that how they are supposed to be, spongy and not cake-ish?
Jason Sanford says
Hi, can you reply back with what specific ingredients you used? 🙂
Linnea says
I have a powerball recipe that is in need of tiny chocolate chips. Theses would be perfect!
Jessica says
What is the ending consistency of the bars? I’m interested in making these, but I can’t tell if I’ll be a fan of the consistency, are they wet, drier and chewy?
Jason Sanford says
Super soft, like a chewy granola bar combined with a muffin, if that makes sense!
Julie Hutchins says
Helllo.
My daughter and I just made these, and I’m curious about what the texture is supposed to be like? I think something went wrong, we followed the directions but the bars have the texture of congealed porridge…??? They don’t look like the ones in your photos! We used applesauce and coconut oil. Baked for the 28 minutes with oven on and then 20 with it off. I’ve thrown them back in to see if they will dry out.
Any suggestions as to what we might have done wrong?
Jason Sanford says
Hi! Their texture is something between a chewy granola bar and a muffin, so it sounds like maybe you made them correctly? Or, what was the texture you were going for/hoping for?
Cait says
I would use the chocolate chips to garnish a delicious fruit and yogurt breakfast. As well as making some yummy cupcakes. hehe
dee says
Hello, we just made these on the weekend – they were fabulous! You gave so many options for these (honey,no honey, etc) I’d like to try another batch that are less sweet. I noticed in the video you seemingly added only apple sauce. Can you please let us know exactly what your preference is? Fyi, we added about half and half of apple sauce and very ripe banana’s, as well as honey. Next time I want to try all apple sauce and no honey.
Thanks!
Krista says
I would love to have a year supply of chocolate chips. I would make a lot of healthy muffins, breakfast bars, etc. Such as your Chocolate Chip on the go breakfast bars. They are SO good.
Kristin says
I like to melt chocolate chips on parchment and spread really thin and freeze to make chocolate crackle. I put it in banana ice cream or cover it in nuts and make chocolate bark. I also love chocolate peanut butter cups! Hope I win!
Christi says
These bars will be perfect vehicle for my son’s maintenance nuts. He’s required to eat a specific amount of nuts as part of his food allergy treatment program and he doesn’t like them, so chocolate chips are essential to mask the nutty flavor. Can’t wait to make them!
Miranda says
I am making these granola bars right now with enjoy life chocolate chips!! I love using them for cookies, bars, trail mix, muffins, banana bread! They are my favorite chocolate chips!
Weini abebe says

Beccy says
I would the chips in any dessert baking and cream cheese dessert!
Angie says
What is oil nut butter?
Jason Sanford says
Hi sorry about that, Katie switched recipe plugins and it got rid of punctuation in the recipes. We must have missed that one when fixing them. It should be oil, nut butter, or additional water.
Jason (media relations)
Tricia says
either oil or nut butter (or water).
Brooklyn says
These are SOO yummy. I loveee the softness to them and the mixture of ingredients all play so nicely together. Lol. May I ask what would be the best way to reheat these after refrigerating/freezing?
Jason Sanford says
Oven or microwave work!
Jordan says
Hi Katie! I just pulled the bars out of the oven. Should they still be soft / mushy to the touch? Or should they be harder?
Jason Sanford says
They are soft, like muffins almost!
Lori B says
While straight out of the bag is my favorite way to have the Enjoy Life mini chocolate chips, I also love cutting dates in half lengthwise, spreading on a little peanut butter, and then dipping that face down into the chocolate chips. I make a bunch and freeze them, eating them right out of the freezer. They taste like a frozen Snickers bar!
Carolynn says
I would love to win a year’s supply of chocolate chips, especially mini ones! My girls and I love them sprinkled in oatmeal, mixed into breakfast cookies, and included in mini muffins. They’re the best!
Sonam Chheda says
I would bake so many different chocolate desserts including these bars and your deep dish cookie pie if i had a years supply of enjoy life chocolates.
Rachelle says
Been feeling the dearth of chocolate since making the switch to vegan eating. I would love to melt these and mix with some coconut oil to have a chocolate covered banana!! Although these oatmeal squares sound amazing and will be my next covd recipe experiment!!
Kat says
Not sure what I was expecting, but these pretty much taste like oatmeal mixed with applesauce. Maybe I was overly optimistic hoping it would taste like an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. For the optional ingredients I used coconut oil, honey and applesauce. Any tips on improving taste?
Dawn Dillner says
We LOVE Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips! I started buying them once my daughter had to give up dairy. We use them in pumpkin cookies, peanut balls and right out of the bag! They have made our dairy free family so happy!
Rosemary says
What about if using granulated or brown sugar?
Laura C. says
I would make these bars but also in pancakes, cookies and straight up.
Katie Burg says
I use chocolate chips in brownies, peanut butter balls, oatmeal balls, out if the bag. (Out of the bag is my favorite!)
Tricia Wassel says
So many things I would do with these. Chocolate chip bars, add to pancakes, brownies, chocolate chip cheesecake, the list never ends. I don’t know when the giveaway ended, but would love to be added if there is a new giveaway. And I love your recipes!!! I can’t wait to try this one. Love the coconut ice cream, keto cheesecake.
Tricia says
I tried these yesterday, and they came out WAY too wet. I will try again, with a bit less applesauce.
Cátia says
Hey! The applesauce is 100% natural without sweeteners?
Thanks! I wanna try it.
CCK Media Team says
You can use either sweetened or unsweetened!
Melissa B says
I think Enjoy Life chocolate chips taste better than ‘normal’ chocolate chips.
Kierstyn B. says
When you store these bars in the freezer, do they come out ready to eat or should they be left out to thaw or something?
CCK Media Team says
Definitely thaw first 🙂
Brandy says
Have you tried sweetening with chopped dates or date paste instead of agave or stevia?
I would use the chocolate chips in cookies, blondies and cookie dough ice cream!
M. says
I would love to eat the chips as is or add to baked or unbaked goodies. I think Kate’s recipes are just amazing. I would so appreciate getting the chocolate chips. Thank you.
Brittani G says
I won’t lie, I’ve made bar similar to these before so I went into this having little faith my kids would like them considering they’ve snubbed plenty of others. Am I glad I made these! The kids love them and they are allergen free for my youngest. We use Enjoy Life chocolate chips for that reason and we go through tons of them.
Deborah A Marshall says
Could you replace the chocolate chips in this recipe with blueberries?
CCK Media Team says
We don’t see why not! It might need a little more baking time due to the extra liquid. We haven’t tried it!
Joni Owada says
At our house we have trouble keeping them in stock…we eat them on things, in things, and on their own.
We love them!
Andrea says
If using mashed bananas how many would you use?
CCK Media Team says
Use the same amount as if using applesauce, the 2 2/3 cup 🙂
Taisa says
My 2.5 year old loved these! And I love that this will make such a good, non-messy car snack for our next road trip. Thanks!
Chocolate Covered Katie says
Thank you so much for making them 🙂
Nancy W. says
Greetings! I made your Chocolate Chip Breakfast Squares To Go tonight and OH MY GOSH they were fantastic! I took your suggestion and swapped out the applesauce for pumpkin puree and used my homemade nut butter in place of the oil. I also added a couple drops of both peppermint and clove essential oils. My husband and I could have eaten the whole pan in one sitting, but we saved some for later…!! 🙂
As far as how I’d use mini chocolate chips, my favorite way is in oatmeal!! (with cashews, blueberries, flaxseed meal, chia seeds, cinnamon, and clove essential oil!) 😉
CCK Media Team says
Yours sound delicious!
Caitlin says
Is there a way to make the texture more like a cookie. To me it was just baked oatmeal with chocolate chips. Did I do some thing wrong?
CCK Media Team says
Hi! These are like baked oatmeal so you did it right :). For more of a cookie, maybe go with this one? https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/single-serving-chocolate-chip-cookie/

I made these for my lunchbox and split it into sprinkles, choc chip and marshamellows and used the leftovers in cupcake tins!! Super easy and quick for lunchboxes and good for storage highly recommend

Hi, just one question , Is it ok if I baked this in a microwave? I’m a beginner and am doing my best to eat healthy now😅 Thank you

Nikki N. says
My daughter and I would have so much baking yummy chocolate treats!

If frozen, what’s the best way to thaw them?
Lisa Lawrence says
Enjoy Life chips are a staple in my home with all our food allergies. I was over the moon when I first found these several years ago, and I always have a few bags in the pantry. My favorite quick chocolate fix when I don’t feel like baking…mix ‘em into nut-butter and eat it with a spoon 🙂
Beth says
Although I am a chocolate fan, I’ve never really liked it in breakfast foods! These bars look yummy, so I’m wondering if users have tried them with mix-ins other than the chocolate chips, such as dried fruit. (And as a side note, I’d love to see more recipes with dried fruit on the blog!)
CCK Media Team says
You can definitely sub dried fruit! We’ve done it with raisins before 🙂
Tanya says
I use enjoy life chocolate chips in all my baking, cookies, breads, muffins.

I love chocolate chips.
Right out of the bags is the best. I love them in a mix with rasins, peanuts , and chocolate chips. And chocolate chip cookies Right out of the oven when the chocolate chips are still soft and gooey .
Sanchez says
Made these earlier they were sogood!! Next time I’ll try using a combination of different chocolates for even more goodness! If I had a years supply of chocolate I would be making double chocolate chip cookies for breakfast lunch and dinner!!! Kidding… but cookies would be high on the list… chocolate mousse, chocolate cake… my little bakers heart couldn’t take it.
Megan Smedley says
I definitely eat these right out of the bag!! I cannot have dairy or soy because of breastfeeding and enjoy life mini chips are my LIFE LINE!
Lisa says
Katie, thanks for all your lovely recipes! We are big fans of your chocolate chip cookie pie, and would use Enjoy Life chips in that recipe, among many others!
What do you think about adding hemp seeds to this recipe?

Jen says
Just made these for the first time and they are delicious. I was wondering about making it a little less soft. Mine is like a bowl of oatmeal. Thinking I would like more on the cookie/crisp side. Any thoughts? Thank you!!
CCK Media Team says
Thank you for making them 🙂 These are supposed to be soft like muffins, not crispy like granola bars, so maybe something like these strawberry oatmeal bars would be more of the texture you’re hoping for? https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/strawberry-oatmeal-bars/
Heather says
Found the recipe to be very sweet when using bananas- could probably go without the sweetener at all.
Beth says
I’m about to use those yummy mini chips in your baked oatmeal recipe! 😋 love your recipes!
Jessica says
This was the first recipe I’ve made off your blog. I have recently started having problems with severe acid reflux, and a very wide range of foods can trigger it. I wanted a “safe” (low fat, low acid, otherwise trigger-free) substantial snack/meal substitute I can easily carry around with me. Made these bars and they are perfect! I did make a couple adjustments to the recipe: I used dates instead of chocolate chips (sadly, chocolate is a trigger food for me), and I used ¾ cup mashed banana and made up the rest of the volume of banana + oil with plain 2% yoghurt, simply because I needed to use it up… Added cinnamon, ginger, and pumpkin pie spice. The bars came out soft yet holding their shape, sweet but not cloyingly so (I used maple syrup as the sweetener), and satisfying. I love how well they held together; most of the “healthy” oat bar recipes I’ve tried over the years have come out a lot more crumbly. I made a half batch in an 8×8 pan, following the baking instructions as written. I plan to keep a container of the bars individually wrapped in my freezer so I can throw one or two in my bag when I head out for the day. I think I’ll be making a lot more of your recipes!
Jennifer says
These are great! I love making them with unsweetened applesauce and adding in some cinnamon, a few chocolate chips, nuts and craisins. I love how easy they freeze and I can easily take one out for breakfast and eat it warm or cold. Thanks for the recipe.

I have 4 grandkids, a son and a daughter in law who are all dairy free, nut free and so on. So I would use these in everything I make that calls for chocolate chips.
