Healthy granola recipe you can make in different flavors that can be oil-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, & completely free of refined sugars. Recipe here: https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2015/04/09/low-fat-granola/

Feel free to change up the ingredients to customize this low fat granola and make different flavors.

It’s easily amenable to whatever you have on hand and wish to throw in.

I’ve used cranberries or dried cherries here, but raisins or dates would also be nice.

And you can substitute any dried or freeze-dried fruit for the strawberries. Or you can omit the fruit altogether and add in some shredded coconut or chopped walnuts instead…

Basically, you can have fun making the recipe your own!

Yield 1 recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup rice crispies
  • 1/4 tsp each: baking soda and salt
  • 1/2 cup dried fruit of choice
  • 1/3 cup agave or honey
  • 1 tbsp any sweetener of choice, or pinch stevia
  • optional 1 cup freeze-dried berries
  • optional handful nuts, shredded coconut, etc.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment, and set aside. In a bowl, stir together the first 6 ingredients (plus optional nuts or coconut if desired, but not freeze-dried berries yet). Add the liquid sweetener, and stir to coat. Spread granola out on the baking sheet, then bake 8 minutes. Remove from the oven and turn the granola, then bake 2 more minutes. Stir in the freeze-dried berries if desired. The low fat granola will look soft when it first comes out, but it hardens as it cools and will be firm by the next day.

How long will this granola keepp fresh in a jar (aside from eating it all up!)? I would like to make some as a gift. Thanks for such an easy and oil-free recipe!

I am SO excited about this recipe. I have some strict dietary restrictions due to gallbladder issues and allergies (I can’t do dairy, bananas, pineapples, wheat, and I have to eat a strict low-fat diet so I can’t overdo it on oils), and I unfortunately can’t do a lot of your amazing recipes because of the oil required. Sometimes I can switch it out for coconut oil, but I do have to be careful with the amount of fat I eat because it makes me so sick. Stupid gallbladder. Anyway, I was overjoyed when I saw this recipe sitting in my inbox today, because granola is a big “no-no” usually, which is sad because I love it! I am making this pronto! I am wondering, could you make another low-fat recipe that doesn’t involve bananas or dairy?

I adore your granola recipes. I use it on top of greek yogurt, cereal, even in oatmeal. The options really are endless! And 5783490573 times healthier than buying the storebought variety 🙂

  4. Emily says

Oh my goodness this looks excellent! I tend to get frustrated with most boxed granola because they have a ridiculous amount of added sugar. This is a much less guilt-inducing alternative.

love this recipe! almost identical to the one ive used but it actually works a lot better. i also recommend trying a stovetop granola for anyone who is super impatient like myself and tends to end up with soggy or burnt granola, much easier to control 🙂

  6. Jess says

Just tried this- best granola I’ve ever made!! I used grape nuts (maybe not available outside the uk) instead of rice crispies, half honey, half maple syrup, and walnuts, almonds, cranberries and chopped dates! X

This is the best granola I’ve ever made!! I used Grape Nuts (probably not available outside the UK) instead of rice crispies, half honey and half maple syrup, and walnuts, almonds, cranberries and chopped dates! Thanks Katie!

This looks so yummy and it’s way better and healthier compared to most of the stuff we buy, regardless if it’s organic or not. Depending on what fruit you use you can skip the sweetener in its entirely to make it even better.

trader joe’s has quite a few freeze dried fruits, including blueberries, raspberries, mangoes, strawberries, and bananas.

    • Colleen says

Harmony House sells tons of freeze-dried berries, fruits, veggies etc and all their products are meatless. I found them on Amazon.

Great recipe! However, I wanted to add cocoa powder to it. How much should I add? And how much stevia should I add with the cocoa powder, if any?

  10. Renee says

Katie, this looks delicious! Can you tell me what brand of Rice Krispies you used. Are they the gluten-free ones? Thanks!

  11. Katie says

Granola success! I’ve been trying to find a good homemade granola recipe and nothing has turned out quite right. I just pulled this out of the oven and even my kids are picking at it while it cools. I may not have any left for tomorrow at this rate. Oh well, I’ll just have to make some more. Thank you for the delicious recipe!

Sorry Sally this is my new granola recipe! I added more oats instead of rice crispies and used maple, tasted just as good as the recipe using way more sugars, oil, flour and almond flour. Also I add the freeze dried berries and hemp seeds when I am ready to sit and eat.

  13. Karen says

This was great! No oil nor processed sugar! I added crushed pecans. For sweetener I used agave and maple syrup. So yummy and crispy. It was a bit over done, so next time I will shorten the bake time to six minutes, flip and cook another 2 min. I will make spread it a bit thicker , so when it is cooled I can crack the granola into bit sized pieces. After cooled, I did add a small handful of semi sweet chocolate chips. Mmmmmmm…… Also next time I will make a double batch – ’cause I know It will disappear quickly!

  14. Karen says

This is a great recipe. Thank you so very much!
I love that the granola is fat free and crunchy. I like to add coconut (prior o baking for a “toasted coconut flavor) as well as the dried fruit that I have on hand, such as dried cranberries, raisens, and/ or dried cherries. Of course I toss in dark chocolate chips after baking!! Oh, I forgot to mention at chopped or smashed walnuts are great too! This recipe works well as one of my “anti-inflammatory” foods.

your blog is awesome, I found very good stuff and recipes, this one really impressive and I must try to taste this with my family, 😀

  16. Amy says

The first time I made this it came out perfectly. This time, it never firmed up all the way, even though it looked golden coming out of the oven. Any tips/ideas?

  17. Amy says

I cooked at 400 for 8 minutes and it burned to black bottoms, even before flipping over. What should it look like when ready to flip and remove so I can check it frequently? And can I cook it at a lower temp?

    • Amy says

PS I’m usually a very good baker and make sure to follow recipes carefully… Just having trouble with this one!

    • Jason Sanford says

Hi! Hmm is your oven calibrated? Are you cooking it on the middle rack? You can definitely cook at a lower temp, and maybe your oven needs half the time??
