No Bake Oreo Cookies

These no bake Oreo cookies are even better than an Oreo…

healthy oreo

Homemade Oreo cookies?!

Ah, your eyes are playing tricks on you. What you really see is even better than an Oreo. These sandwich cookies look like Oreos, but they’re softer and chewier… imagine a cross between an Oreo and a candy bar.

That sounds fun, right?

raw oreos

Even more fun:

You don’t need an oven. These cookies are no-bake. 🙂

raw oreos

No Bake Oreo Cookies

Makes 30-34 sandwich cookies

  • 1 cup walnuts (see nutrition link below, for substitutions) (120g)
  • 1 and 1/3 cup pitted dates (I highly recommend Sunmaid, which are softer) (200g)
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp plus 1/16 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp regular cocoa powder (or Dutch-processed for more of a “cookie” taste)
  • coconut butter or raw cashew butter (see nutrition link below, for substitutions)
  • optional: sweetener of choice, if a sweeter filling is desired

Combine first 5 ingredients in a food processor, and process until the dates are completely broken up. (I used a Cuisinart. For best texture results, don’t use a blender.) Transfer the dough to a ziploc-type bag, seal, and smush it into one tight ball. Then roll out onto a sheet of wax or parchment paper, and use cookie cutters to make circles (or other shapes!). Fridge or freeze the circles for a few minutes, so they’re firmer and therefore easier to frost. Once firm, spread the filling on 1/2 the circles and then top with remaining circles.

These are best stored in the fridge or freezer, as coconut butter melts at room temperature. (P.S. coconut butter really doesn’t have a coconutty flavor, if you were worried about that. Its flavor is more like shortbread. However, feel free to use one of the other options if you’d prefer.)

When was the last time you had an Oreo?

I don’t like hard cookies, so I was never really big on Oreos. But I love the cookies ‘n cream flavor. Cookies ‘n cream ice cream, cookies ‘n cream cupcakes, cookies ‘n cream lip balm… yes, they do make such a thing!

Do you remember the game where two people twist the Oreo, and the person with the cream side will supposedly have good luck? In elementary school, I think we played that game every single day at lunch. It never got old.

Link Of The Day:

Side note: As I wrote earlier, today’s recipe isn’t supposed to be an exact copycat for Oreos. I’m still working on that… I have the cookie part down, but I’m stuck for filling ideas since I’m trying not to use coconut butter or tofu (since so many people ask for substitutions when I make recipes with those ingredients. Y’all are a tough bunch to please! 😉

Oh my gosh! You just made my morning! I adore cookies and cream, but like you, am not crazy for hard cookies. Ahhh! This is going to be a good day. 🙂

  2. Ellie says

Ohh my goodness! Katie, you. are. amazing! (:
This might be a silly question, but the only kind of cocoa powder I have on hand right now is unsweetened, is that the same as regular or will the cookies have a different taste to them?

  3. Geneva says

I’m not a big oreo eater, because I also prefer soft cookies, but I love lara bars and these cookies are similar so I think they would be great. Would your vegan cool whip work as the creme for your copy cat oreo?

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

I bet that would be awesome! You might have to freeze it to get it hard. I’ve actually been meaning to try freezing that stuff anyway. People keep telling me how good it is frozen. And then you could use cookie cutters on it…

  4. Jackie says

I was never a big fan of Oreos, probably because I also prefer chewy cookies to crunchy ones. However, these I think I would really enjoy!

  5. Doroteia says

Do you think they would be good if I used almonds and put almond butter for the filling (it probably wont be like oreo cookies anymore, but I think it’ll still be delicious.) ?

  6. Samantha says

    Oh. Wow.

It is about 8am right now…not too early in my opinion and I eat some form of no-bake/fudge babies/larabar cookies every day right now.

Your link of the day is still on my list to make…

Oreos. I would say probably over a year? Comes and goes for me. When I do eat them it is the peanut butter filling ones. And I get sick every single time which is probably why I am finally getting wise and not eating them. 🙂 Besides, these days I have SO many better options thanks to you!

  7. Debbie says

I prefer soft and chewy rather than hard/ crunchy. When I was younger I used to lick the filling out of the oreos and put the cookie part back.
Could I leave out the salt? I have a family member on a very low salt diet.

  8. Jennifer says

I only like Oreo’s if they are frozen (i.e. extra hard). I was pretty excited when I found out that they are vegan, but still, I try to stay away…

  9. Aurelie says

    GOSH I LOVE OREOS.

So delicious, yet sooo sinful! Definitely trying out your recipe asap! Thanks! ((((((((:

(I don’t usually exaggerate so much on emotes, because I personally find it pretty annoying, but this is a worthy cause for celebration & many-mouthed smileys! ;D)

  10. D'Arcy says

Hi Katie! I love your blog. It’s mouthwatering. What about using red palm oil in an oreo filling? It’s semi-solid at room temp and very good for you. Or what about….MACADAMIA NUT BUTTER, the most delicioso thang eva! Or cashew?

  11. Molly Alice says

I can’t have regular oreos — I’m allergic to chocolate! But I do love me some golden oreos.
Any idea what I could sub for the cocoa powder so I could make these chocolate-free?

    • Stella says

what about carob powder? it’s even healthier than cocoa! the taste is a little sweeter than (unsweetened) cocoa, so I’d think you wouldn’t need another sweetener. Not everyone loves carob, but I think it’s delicious and goes very well with lots of recipes that call for cocoa/chocolate.

      • Molly Alice says

Hmm, I’m not a huge fan of carob, but I can certainly give it a try. There’s no flavor that enough sugar can’t disguise, I’m sure!
        Thanks for the idea!

  12. Grace says

Oh my gosh, this made my life. Im wondering if u could use these and cover them in chocolate for a healthy alternative to Oreo balls… Hmm… 🙂

  13. Emily says

Question on coconut butter- I made some and put it into a jelly jar in the fridge, but now I can’t figure out how to get it out to measure it! Should I microwave the jar until it’s smooshy? Or should I have not put it into a jar? It’s a really hard texture right out of the fridge, and it can kind of be scraped at with a knife, but not well enough to measure.

These cookies look pretty good – I’m going to try them and bring them to work and see if I can convince the people on my team to try them!

    • Stella says

I don’t think you need to put coconut butter in the fridge, I never do anyway. At room temp. it’s supposed to be spreadable, but mine is always kinda hard except when the weather outside is really hot (which doesn’t happen that often around here). You could wait till it’s a little softer at room temp., then scoop out some spoonfulls and melt them on the stove/in the microwave. that’s what I always do. Or you could put the jar in a waterbath and heat the water till the butter gets soft. I don’t have a microwave, so no idea if you can put a whole jar in there…

  14. Ellen says

So this might be a silly question….but I don’t see the recipe for the filling. Is that just the coconut butter?

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Sorry for the confusion! Yes, oddly enough I thought just the coconut butter alone was shortbread-y enough to stand as the filling. It doesn’t taste coconutty! (You can also mix some sweetener into the coconut butter if you’d prefer a sweeter filling.)

  15. Annie @ Naturally Sweet Recipes says

Even though regular oreos are about the worst thing you can eat, I still am tempted to eat them! This recipe looks delicious and sounds like the perfect healthy substitution! I love they are no bake! I will for sure make these the next time I get confronted with a real oreo! Thanks for sharing!

  16. Shelly says

I LOVE soft cookies, so much nicer than hard ones!! The only way to have a hard cookie is with a cup of tea!

The oreo filling you are stuck on …. how about something like quark (do you guys have it?) … its a low fat soft cheese – with something like vanilla and ground almonds it might give you a good consistency?

Thanks for the great recipes 🙂

    Shelly

  17. Natalie says

    woohoo!

all i got to do is wait til you come up with the filling idea.
I haven’t a good blender to make my own and local stores don’t sell coconut butter 🙁

til then i suppose we’ll just live on “crust” (of cookie) and water 😛
    jk

  18. Rachel says

These look great! But, can you clarify the steps? Which ingrdients are for the filling? Do you just mix them together? Thanks!

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Sorry for the confusion! Oddly enough I thought just the coconut butter alone was shortbread-y enough to stand as the filling. It doesn’t taste coconutty! (You can also mix some sweetener into the coconut butter if you’d prefer a sweeter filling.)

  19. Dawn says

I just made a batch – amazing! I used almonds because I had no walnuts on hand. I used natural p.b. for the filling (choco & p.b. is my favorited flavor combo!!).
These are great – just hoping there will be some left when hubby gets home!

What is it about a sandwich cookie….they bring me back to my childhood days….yum

  20. Dr. Rebekah says

I know you suggest Sunmaid dates…have you made anything with Medjool dates instead? Just wondering if those could be subbed b/c I picked some up at Costco the other day 😀

Also…palm shortening is a great sub for Crisco..so I’m wondering about making a filling with that like a whoopie pie filling recipe I have. I’ll openly admit I love sweet sweet stuff lol!!! And I love the Coconut Cream Concentrate from Tropical Traditions…is that basically the same thing as your coconut butter?

Love your site and your recipes (even tho I’m not a vegan!!)

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

No, coconut cream and coconut butter aren’t the same. As for the dates… My food processor doesn’t like the Medjools as much because they’re not as soft. But maybe if you soak them a little first… Or if you have a really powerful food processor, they could work!

  21. sarah@thesweetlife says

fantastic idea! I love the ingredients involved. I still buy oreos every once in awhile and have a hard time not eating waaaaay to many. next time I have the craving, I’ll make yours and not feel to bad about eating the whole batch.

    • Samantha says

I think it is your choice…I will say that my version today I processed some date with the cashew butter. I do eat coconut butter straight without a problem. 🙂

  22. Danielle @ clean food creative fitness says

Unbelievable! Those look so amazing and then I looked at the ingredients and they are even more amazing! You are a genius!

  23. Katie @ Nutrition in a Peanut Shell says

Oh my gosh thaaank you for posting this! I’ve been combing the internet all over for homemade oreos…I wasn’t even looking for healthy! And these are, so cool!

  24. Kerry says

These look amazing! I haven’t had an oreo in years! I try to stay away from processed foods, and I don’t like really sweet things anymore. I just end up feeling sick if I eat them. I do like desserts though, especially chocolate ones! I just discovered your fudge babies, and I love them. These cookies sound similar, so I know I’ll love them too!

    • Laura says

Or I might make your “healthier pb” as a filling… So many choices! Now if I had an actually good blender or food processor… (we are buying a new one, and I keep saying that we need to just get a food processor, but my dad keeps saying no). This just means I have to work harder in my quest to save up for a vitamix!

  25. Kayla says

Katie these are amazing, your AMAZING!

Love your blog and all the recipes, keep up the great work. 🙂

P.S: June 16th is… wait for it…. National FUDGE DAY!! (Omg, tears of joy, right?)
Hope you have something special for us planned hehe

  26. Anna @ The Guiltless Life says

I love the idea of a healthy Oreo recipe only because so many healthified recipes – like Cookies’n’Cream ice cream or pie, for example – still require Oreos as a base. That’s because people are usually most concerned with calories, which I get, but I would still like to have the whole recipe be healthified – even the Oreos! So if you can help out with that bit, I’d love it. Because, of course, for pies and ice cream you only NEED the cookie part – the filling part is negated by the ice cream! So you could post that! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  27. Caroline says

You are amazing thank you for your quick response!!!!! Just might have to have an Oreo milkshake for dessert tonight! 🙂

  28. mnkygirl says

Is there something I should know about coconut butter that people would be asking for subs? I just started using it instead of butter. Can’t wait to try these.

  29. Amber with Slim Pickin's Kitchen says

Yum!!! These are super cute and delicious, I bet! Definitely going to make ’em. PS. How do people not like coconut butter?!?!? Insanity.

  30. Joanna says

Last time I had an Oreo was probably a couple months ago. My mom offered me some when I came to see her but, since I’m recovering from a cold, I had to refuse the sugar.
But it’s great that these are sugar-free! I always opt to using stevia whenever possible. 😉

  31. Moni Meals says

Katie, these rock. I’m just like you, i love cookies that are more on the soft side.
I used to eat so many Oreos as a kid but only super soggy, from being dipped in Milk. I hope to make these!

  32. Gracie says

    hey girlie!
I was thinking maybe you would wanna try an avocado base for the middle of the oreos… I know I know, you don’t like avocados and all, but if you mix them with other things, they go chameleon, and tend to take on other flavors. I just made the avocado butter cream frosting, which is what made me think that you might take a shot at that. It tastes a bit more like kiwi when you add sugar to them. I haven’t tried stevia, as I’m not sure how to mix it in or anything. Anyhoo, I’m sure there’s inspiration for you somewhere!

    Take care missy,
    Grace

  33. Sarah Spann says

Hey Katie! I love the coconut butter filling, but if people are asking for something else maybe you could try to make a homemade icing filling with just homemade sugar free powdered sugar and a couple of teaspoons of milk?

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Aw thanks for including me!! Sorry about your can… sometimes it just happens that you get a bad can. It’s happened to me as well, and it’s annoying but there’s no real way to tell until you open it :-?.

  34. l says

call me crazy, but i also have used artisana coconut butter many, many times and it most DEFINITELY has a strong “coconutty” taste. it tastes like pure unsweetened coconut, which is what it is. when i add it to chocolate or on top of brownies, it definitely tastes like coconut.

that being said, i wish there were more recipes that did not include coconut as the filling/frosting/glaze/etc. i love coconut, but i don’t want it in every treat, if that makes sense.

  35. Jenny says

Honestly… I’m kind of… idk.. disappointed in this.. it seems like all your recipes are made out of the same ingredients, just different shapes… you used to have so much creativity!! i’m sad 🙁 they look pretty but i just can’t justify that a date and a little coconut is going to make it taste annnnyyything like a oreo… they look wonderful, though!!

    • anon says

Honestly… I’m kind of… idk.. disappointed that people like you exist, to think it’s ok to put people down who obviously work really hard. What exactly do you want? Most recipes use the same ingredients. I can even think of entire cookbooks called “1 mix, 100 cookies” or something like that. Many of us appreciate that CCK uses easy to find ingredients so we don’t have to spend a fortune buying new ingredients for every recipe. The creativity is finding new ways to use the same ingredients, not forcing readers to shell out money most of us don’t have to waste on an entire bag of some new ingredient we’re only going to use for one recipe.

How about this: If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

      • Sara says

I agree with anon that one of the best things about CCK’s blog (ok, one of the many best things) is how she doesn’t call for obscure ingredients. It helps save money, and it also helps for people like me who want to make whatever good looking thing she posts ASAP! 😉

Also, Jenny, maybe if you read this post, it’ll clear a few things up for you as to where CCK is keeping some of her best new recipes: https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2012/05/24/my-big-secret/

      • Jane says

Look, I personally don’t think that Jenny’s original comment was mean or unkind. It is true that there is a limit to how many ingredients there are that are super-healthy that taste good in a dessert, so yes, most of her recipes have similar ingredients. I agree with her in that a regular Oreo probably tastes better. That’s not to say that Katie doesn’t work hard or have creativity, because she has a talent for baking healthily (and making it taste good! although coconut butter on a date cookie does not totally appeal to me, but I do love some good junk food treats every now and then), but it is true that the only real substitutes for butter are coconut butter/oil, etc.

        • L. says

I’d agree that her comment probably wasn’t meant to be rude, if only this part were taken out of her comment “you used to have so much creativity.” That’s pretty much a put-down, implying her blog’s gone downhill (when the opposite is true) and it’s uncalled for. If someone thinks they can do it better, by all means go ahead and try. But don’t put down someone else if you haven’t tried yourself. I am constantly amazed at how Katie can put so much creativity into her blog on such a regular basis. I would’ve run out of fun ideas a long time ago. Remember that if you could do it better, you would!

My favorite Aaron Sorkin quote: “If you were the inventors of facebook, you would’ve invevnted facebook.”

Katie, I am so excited for your book and to see what other recipes you’ve been hiding from us. (If you could post those cinnamon rolls ahead of time…….. ;))

    • Anonymous says

if you read the post katie says its not supposed to be a copycat recipe for oreos, they just look similar.

  36. Beth says

I think you might be trying to kill us…in a good way. 😉 But the question is, do these really taste anything like Oreos?

    • Lisa C. says

Ok this is gonna sound weird, but I thought they did! I didn’t think they would, so I made sure to use the Dutch cocoa to give them a better chance. I also added a little bit of stevia (nu naturals brand) to my coconut butter. The “cookie” part actually did remind me of an oreo, and the filling was even better than oreo filling! I think the only “un oreo” thing about them was the texture. Maybe if you had a dehydrator it would be more oreo like?

  37. Kara @Nutritious-n-Delicious says

I made my own coconut butter for the first time today! So good I pretty much at the whole batch plain in one sitting…whoops! On the topic of coconut…I can’t get myself to like coconut flour…everytime I use it I think it has a funny taste. Do you think I could have gotten bad flour? It tastes really wheaty or grainy or something I am not sure.

  38. Suzanne @ Fit Minded Mom says

I am not a huge Oreo fan but these look divine!!! My daughter LOVES Oreos though so I am going to make these and see whats he thinks of them. If I can get her to eat these instead of the regular ones I will be thrilled!!!

    • Samantha says

      Hi Brin –

I used to do the majority of her no-bake with prunes instead of dates (I can get huge bags of prunes at Costco and go through a lot of them). One day I bought dates and did a bit of a recipe show-down between a couple of recipes I know well to compare dates versus prunes.

I like prunes and they work fine, but there is no denying that dates are sweeter and less “fruit-juice” sweetened in final flavor.

Not sure if this helps or not, but in my opinion prunes are a cheaper option although not a superior one.

    • Lisa B says

You can actually find dates already in a paste form and they are super cheap. I get them at the middle eastern market for only $1.99…that was enough to make one batch of these.

  39. Sarah says

I was surprised when I found out that Oreo Cookies are vegan (I used to nanny for a child who had a milk allergy and learned this then). Then I realized they are probably vegan because they are made with mostly chemicals. Now I don’t eat them at all. Which is sad because they were delicious in a chemical-ly kind of way. 🙂

  40. Nikki says

Marzipan, Katie! I’ll bet that marzipan would make a good filling that would be similar to the original! Maybe if you mixed with your powdered sugar substitute recipe to give it a shorter, more crumbly consistency like the real Oreo has but still keep the sugar low?

  41. Susan Langford says

I made these last night! My boyfriend saw me perusing the recipe and started asking what time I was going to make “Katie’s oreos.” 🙂 Added a few cashews because I didn’t have quite enough walnuts. Also upped the vanilla (I LOVE vanilla) and added vanilla and a little bit of agave to the filling. These were really good! I might have had one with my breakfast this morning… Thank you Katie, you are a rockstar!

  42. sara u says

So I was thinking. . you should make healthy slutty brownies- use your healthy chocolate cookie, healthy brownie and put it together with healthier fudge sauce and vegan ice cream!

  43. Sunnie says

    Katie,

As an idea for an Oreo cookie filling, what about using powdered xylitol as the base? Or even powdered erythritol? I bet you could either add water or almond/soy milk to it to make a creme filling. 😀

  44. Jane says

Honestly, I buy the coconut butter from Trader Joe’s, and it definitely has somewhat of a coconut flavor (not strong, but it’s there). From someone who loves and knows about all things buttery treats, coconut butter doesn’t taste like shortbread with its glorious butter flavor in the slightest. To me, plain coconut butter as a filling sounds sort of gross. Coconut butter is also quite solid after being refrigerated, so the filling would likely be fairly hard and unpleasant. I love healthy treats, but plain coconut butter is not something I would eat.

    • Sara says

      Hi Jane,
I think you’re confusing coconut butter and coconut oil, because TJ’s doesn’t sell coconut butter (at least, all the ones I’ve ever been in don’t!). Try Artisana coconut butter. It really is delicious, yes even plain!

      • Jane says

The TJ’s near me (I live in PA) does indeed sell Coconut Butter near their baking section. I believe it is a new or trial item, because I only noticed it twice. I honestly was not a huge fan, but then again I don’t really like Biscoff spread or Nutella either, which are really popular and loved by about 99% of bloggers. I’ve had coconut oil as well, cooked in things, and from personal experience (I made the mistake of melting it over popcorn-yuck!) I know that that really is not good on its own! I guess it’s a matter of taste. I know some people love coconut butter though. For me, I would have to mix it with powdered sugar and vanilla to somewhat enjoy it. The flavor is just too strange in my opinion. But Katie, and Sara, if you like it, good for you! It’s healthy.

  45. Dawn says

I know you listed it in the nutrition facts tab, but I can’t even imagine how good these would be with some peanut or almond butter between the “cookies.”

Mmmm chocolate and peanut butter together is always a great combination, especially when it’s this healthy!!

  46. Javelin Warrior says

These look delicious – and I’m intrigued at the combination of ingredients and love that these are no-bake. And I wondered how you kept them together without baking, but the dates and coconut oil makes sense… Love these…

      • Javelin Warrior says

Interesting – I know I’ve seen coconut oil in stores, but I’m not sure I’ve seen coconut butter I had assumed they were the same thing. I’m going to have to look for it the next time I’m out shopping. And it’s amazing that the dates and walnuts hold together like that…

Anyway, I’m featuring this post in today’s Food Fetish Friday series (with a link-back and attribution). I hope you have no objections and it’s so much fun following your creations…

  47. Nichole says

tried these… so good! today, thanks to the cck theory, i ran my first 5k in NINETEEN MINUTES!! i was so proud of myself! thank you for helping me! 🙂

  48. jacque says

ok, i’m assuming the “filling” is the coconut butter & sweetener mixed together? that’s the only 2 ingredients I don’t see mentioned (what to do with them) in the recipe.

  49. Ashley says

Funny that you posted an Oreo recipe. I was wanting to ask if you’ve ever done a healthy version of “mud”‘or “dirt” which is a classic kids dessert made from vanilla pudding, cream cheese and crushed Oreos. It’s one of my all time fave desserts but I don’t make it any more for obvious reasons.

    • Alanna says

Ooh, that gave me an idea… The crust (fudge baby) portion always looks kind of like dirt to me when it comes out of the food processor… I’ll bet it’d be good just sprinkled over pudding or ice cream as-is!

  50. Lisa C. says

Ok this is gonna sound weird, but I thought they tasted like oreos! Maybe if you had a dehydrator it would be even more oreo like?

  51. Holli says

    I LOVE COCONUT OIL!!!
I have been using it in recipes for awhile but just recently realized it is amazing all on its own. DANGEROUS discovery

    • Alanna says

Butter, coconut butter, lol. I doubt oil would work here since it’d need to be melted to use as filling and then it’d probably just soak in and make the crust oily (eew).

  52. Lisa B says

I made a batch of these tonight and am excited to try! The kids loved them. Was not clear on how much coconut butter to use though – especially since there were nutrition stats. I’m sure it was supposed to be a set amount…was I missing something?

  53. Kasey Shuler says

It was 9:30pm and Mattox (husband) asks me, what’s for dessert? Good question…I turned to Chocolate Covered Katie and wasn’t disappointed! I made these (half batch) and our lunches in 15 minutes. I didn’t add the nuts and used marshmallow creme for the filling and we both loved them! Thanks for the emergency dessert idea 🙂

  54. Kathy says

The last time I’ve had an Oreo was probably a few months ago. I’m with you — I’m not a fan of hard cookies, but I love cookies ‘n cream! I remember when I was little, I told my dad that I wanted a cookies ‘n cream candy bar (without even knowing they existed!). I was totally surprised when my dad brought me home a cookies ‘n cream candy bar~

  55. Kelly Mc says

I just made these, and they were a perfect option for my wheat and dairy allergies! Thank you so much!

  56. Bergen says

I was very skeptical about this recipe. But it was yummy. I LOVED the dark Oreo part because it really DOES remind you of an Oreo but I didn’t care for the filling. Wish there was a healthy recipe that was dead on for the Oreo filling part. If there was, I’d be selling these for like $5 a piece at work. I would make again! Continue to love love love your posts… I’m a happy blog follower.

  57. Jessasaurus says

AAH! I was reading your recipes a few days ago and theorizing that an oreo-like creation must be possible. you read my mind! (actually you probably were experimenting with it before I even thought of it…but you are still amazing!) I cannot wait to try these.

  58. Erin says

I don’t remember the last time I had an actual oreo. I much prefer them IN things, like you said: cookies and cream stuff 🙂

Delicious. I ate all but 2 (13 yr old son ate those). Afraid to make again for fear of eating them ALL! The coconut butter as a filling was scrumptious! Wish I were as creative as you, keep the yummy recipes coming cute girl!

  60. Elizabeth says

Just a thought…maybe do a combo of your chickpea “cookie dough” and some cacao butter (to harden it up a bit) as an alternate filling that doesn’t use tofu or coconut butter?

  61. Linnet says

so i made these today and were not so good. Couldn’t figure out what went wrong-how anyone could think they taste even close to oreos. Checked the recipe…checked the recipe…checked again. OH NO! I used prunes!!! A for effort?…sigh.

  62. Susie says

I made these today and they were delish! I added a little agave and a drop of vanilla to the coconut butter “frosting” and it really was better than that goop they call “Stuf”. Call ’em Oreos, call ’em Larabar Cookies with Frosting, call ’em Icky Garbage Cookies if ya want… they will taste good no matter what the name 😉 Thank you for another winning recipe!

I heard about your blog while shopping at a grocery store recently. A lady exclaimed, “Oh you are going to love her. She makes her own flours and butters.” I now see it is more than flours and butters. Yum!!!! I am so excited to try these. I don’t know if I can wait for the store to open to go get dates to start this recipe. 🙂

  64. Janelle says

Katie first off I love your recipes and website! I made the cookies and I agree that they are quite good. However for my filling I used a banana and then added vanilla, sweet almond extact, a touch of maple syrup, and rice flour, it still needs some tweeking but I think it is a very nice touch with the chocolate cookie!

  65. Cindi says

I’m confused by the difference between coconut butter and coconut oil. Are they the same? I have coconut oil and love it!! Could I use coconut oil for these Oreos?

  66. Karen Nicholas says

First time I have ever left a comment. I agree with people who do not like hard cookies but I am a big Oreo’s fan when they are dunked in milk. Makes them soft and ooohhh so yummy. As for oreos made from dates, not a bad idea but I like dates so well that I just eat them as they are.
And the pictures are good photographs.

  67. Amy says

I love Oreos and Oreo flavored treats! I had real Oreos on the ice cream cake the I made for myself (yes, I made it for myself), but generally I don’t tend to eat/buy them since they are pretty bad for you. I can’t wait to try your version – sounds delicious!

  68. Dawn says

I love these! Just made my own chocolate filling: 1 can black beans, one banana, 1 pkt nunaturals stevia, 1 squirt agave and 3/4 cocoa powder. Processed very well. YUM!!!!

  69. Lila says

Made these today, and they were a hit! And yes, my family all agreed they tasted remarkably similar in flavor to Oreos–I did use the dutch cocoa, and I’m positive that is what makes the difference between just chocolate and Oreo-cookie flavored chocolate. For filling I used homemade coconut butter mixed with xylitol “powdered sugar” and it tasted very much like real Oreo filling, right down to the texture. I may be biased because I prefer soft Oreos to crunchy ones (a slice of apple put into the package overnight makes ’em perfectly soft the next day, lol!) so I think these are a PERFECT healthier substitute and I don’t even have to wait a day for them to soften up–instant gratification 🙂

  70. Summer says

These are insanely good! I couldn’t get the coconut butter to work and substituted plain cream cheese. In know cream cheese isn’t vegan, but my family went nuts – asking for 2nds, 3rds etc.
Hope you don’t mind I shared my love for these in my latest blog post (and linked to your site numerous times of course!)
    Have a fabulous day!

Thank you so much for this! I was looking for a nice pudding for someone who’s allergic to dairy. This worked really well and was so tasty. I made the ‘dough’ mix a bit softer with cherry brandy and sandwiched it wit chocolate nut spread – couldn’t find coconut. Result – one very happy dinner guest.

  72. Jenny says

I need troubleshooting. I have made this recipe for my boys numerous times, but now the ‘dough’ it coming out greasy. 2 things have changed: I burned out my 300 watt processor and bought a bigger one. I am now using a 600 watt motor (14 cup capacity). The other difference is that it is summer -but the house is cool. I should add that ‘no’ I am not doubling the recipe and the dates are not greasy to touch. The mixture does feel warm to me right away when I get it out, but I can’t say it didn’t with the other appliance, I just didn’t notice until now as I try to figure out why this is happening. Ideas? I would love some suggestions.

  73. Makenna says

I want to make these so badly! My Dad is diabetic and he LOVES oreos so these/all of your recipes are perfect for us! I have a huge bag of pistachios so I would want to make the filling with those! Yum!!!

  74. Hope Henchey says

I made these today and they were amazing!!! I added some milk to my coconut butter (about 1.5 tbsps) because it was too dry and it was perfect! Thanks for this recipe Katie!!!

  75. Sophie says

Awww, these looks so good! Unfortunately, someone in my family has a nut allergy, so making them isn’t exactly an option.

However, I was wondering if maybe you could share the recipe for the cookie part of an oreo (the one you said you had down)? I’ve been searching everywhere for a healthy oreo recipe, and the cookie part is something I just can’t find. With that being said, it’s totally fine if you don’t want to share the recipe, too, because your saving it for your cookbook (so excited for that, by the way), or don’t want to give it out early for some other reason. I’d totally understand.

Thanks for taking the time to read my really long comment, and I hope you reply!

P.S. Have you tried (vegan) yogurt for the oreo filling? It seems like it should work.

  76. Hope Henchey says

    Katie,
This recipe was awesome! I made it in my Blendtec. The coconut butter worked too (after I added some milk.) I LOVE your blog and I feel totally justified in eating these yummy desserts because there is very little un-health in them. I am SO picky now about what desserts I will make and consume. “It asks for a whole cup of sugar? Umm no thanks!!!” Before your blog, I thought that’s just how dessert has to be!
Thank you so much! God’s creativity is seen through your creativity!

Hey! I think it would be awesome if you posted a vegan recipe for cookies’n’cream chocolate bars. They’re so tasty and I bet your genius mind could figure out some coconut butter/ crunchy cereal concoction. Just a suggestion! Thanks Katie, you are incredible =)

    No-Bake Oreo Cookies:

You note that these should be kept in fridge or freezer due to coconut butter. I am doing a construction theme party for my son’s second birthday party. Initially I thought I’d make Oreo balls & put them in a dump truck (in place of a cake), but I was concerned about the cream cheese being outdoors in June if it’s a hot day. Then I learned that my 1 yr old nephew tested positive for peanut allergy a couple of days ago. I’m concerned about Oreos possibly sharing manufacturing lines with products that do have peanuts. So here I am looking for other alternatives…are there any substitutions for coconut butter that will work in this recipe & make it safer to have outside in possible heat? We can store them in fridge until we set up for the party, but it needs to safely be able to stay in warmth for at least an hour or 2. Thanks for advice!

  79. Janelle says

Im not sure if anyone will get to read this!
But dont eat OREOS ever!!!!!!!!! (the real commercial oreos)
I have been living a healthy lifestyle all along, with minimal processed and junk foods,
and just that day i picked up a pack of oreo (who doesnt like cookie and cream once in a while right), and omg i was outrageously sugar high, and one led to another and made me crave for even more biscuits and sugary junk! If you were to look at the ingredients list, not only the first ingredient is sugar, there is HFCS. There is really nothing good about it so dont feed that to yourself or your kids! Just a two cents here 🙂

  80. Chrissy says

I made these again last night… I don’t bother with the filling part because the ‘chocolate wafer’ part is so darn good on its own! Katie, I have to say this is my absolute favorite of your recipes that I’ve tried!

  81. Roopali says

Hi! I recently made your copycat vitamuffins and found them to be a bit high on cocoa, not a big fan of the bitter taste, same is also true for my 2 yr old daughter. Now I am not sure on whether I should reduce the cocoa powder or increase the sweetener in your recipes to get a ‘sweeter’ taste. I really want to try these Oreos, can I skip the cocoa powder here and use lots of chocolate chips instead? It would be easier for me to control the chocolate ‘bitterness’ in that case and also have a little crunch in the cookies. I know you are busy (all the best for your book btw) but could you please answer my query, thanks a ton!

  82. Andrea says

So I was a little hesitate at first that this would taste good…but WOW!! It tastes great. I am a but of a sugar addict and this was so good that I couldn’t stop. I have to admit I didn’t really care for the coconut butter and didn’t have any other butter to substitue but regardless I am enjoying just the ‘cookie’ part.

  83. Joy says

I never liked oreos, but since my fiancé does, I wanted to make him a healthier version. I put truwhip for the filling, and yum! Let’s hope he likes them as much as I do!

  84. Deb G says

Sounds amazing, but do you have any suggestions for a substitute for the dates. We have fruit intolerances in this house so most fruits are off limits. Pineapple & coconut are ok. Maybe dried pineapple &/or coconut in place of the dates? Might there be a non-fruit alternative?

  85. Amie says

I made these this weekend, and they are awesome! I didn’t bother cutting them out but just made a giant “slab” sandwich and cut them into squares. Still cute though! Thanks for this post!

  86. Dania says

Hi im 14 yrs old ,, i actually from Egypt and i love your blog because i am little overweight and i’ve been trying to lose it but still i dont want to get tortured by bad diets so thats why i love ur recipes they’re awsome and healthy .. have a great day 🙂

  87. Izzie says

    hello 🙂
I made delicious mistake whilst making these and resulted in ultra rich fudgey cookies instead ….mmmm.
I thought I’d halve the recipe because I didn’t have enough walnuts but I forgot to halve the amount of cocoa and vanilla, at first I didn’t realise but they tasted so sinful I thought I’d done something wrong!

  88. Kelly says

My kids loved helping to make these! We used various cookie cutters that they picked out. I’m not sure these will last a day. The dough turned out really oily, but still really yummy! I probably over-processed it. I still rate these 5 stars because they are so good , even without the filling. We used almond butter.

  89. Alex says

Great recipe! Everyone loved these cookies! So excited to finally make some of your recipes and have them be successful after spending so many hours drooling over them!

  90. GrandePollo says

If some of us don’t mind coconut butter or tofu, would you post a recipe for the filling for us rebels, please? Thanks! 🙂

  91. Rebecca Valentine says

Im an oreo addict and have been terribly missing em ever since I turned keto. I so badly wana try this out, but have a few doubts.
    1. If I were to use granulated sweetener specifically erythritol instead of dates, how much would you recommend?
    2. Can I just use my homemade no churn vanilla ice cream as the filling, or would that make the cookies soggy and wet?
    3. Is the cocoa powder mentioned here for a oreo-kind of dark chocolate cookie? Im all for oreos but I still prefer a lighter chocolate version (if that makes sense)
Sorry to be asking so many questions, Im a fairly new baker and know very little about ingredients & their quantities. Would be grateful if you could help. Thanks.
