Avocado Frozen Yogurt.
The fourth week of May is known as National Frozen Yogurt Week, so I thought I’d play along this time: every single recipe on my blog this week will center around the frozen-yogurt theme, starting with today’s slightly-unconventional recipe for Avocado Frozen Yogurt.
The avocado makes this frozen dessert extra creamy and super healthy. Yes, it sounds strange, but this avocado dessert might just convert even the biggest avocado hater. And hey, at least it’s not Spinach Ice Cream!
Avocado Frozen Yogurt
Adapted from Homemade Frozen Yogurt
- 1 large, ripe avocado (it should be soft)
- 2 cups plain yogurt of choice (such as Wholesoy) (440g)
- 1/2 cup milk of choice (120g)
- 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract (2g)
- 1/8 tsp salt
- pinch pure stevia extract, or 3-4 tbsp sugar of choice (Amount will depend on the sweetness of your yogurt, and you may need more if you’re using an unsweetened yogurt. You want the non-frozen mixture to taste a little too sweet for your liking, as it is less sweet once frozen.)
Avocado frozen yogurt recipe: Scrape out the flesh of the avocado and discard the peel and pit. Blend all ingredients until completely smooth, in a blender, food processor, or Vita-Mix. If you have an ice cream maker, transfer mixture to the machine and churn according to manufacturer’s directions. My Cuisinart took just 10 minutes. Eat immediately as soft-serve, or freeze in an airtight container for a half hour if you want a firmer texture. (If you don’t have an ice cream machine, you can simply transfer the blended mixture to an airtight container, freeze, and stir every half hour for 2-3 hours. The texture won’t be quite as creamy, but it still works.)

Question of the Day:
What flavor gets your vote for Frozen Yogurt Week?
Feel free to leave as many flavor suggestions as you can dream up. There are four large containers of yogurt in my refrigerator, just waiting to be turned into frozen yogurt. Link of the Day:
Can you tell the weather is getting warmer?
Sarah says
Interesting recipe! Does it taste overwhelmingly like avocado though? What about adding different flavoring to this?
Beth says
This was my fear as well Danielle.. I found the vanilla covered up the avocado flavor pretty well.. and I don’t like avocado at all 🙂 so that was definitely a plus 😉
Beth says
Whhooopps! I meant Sarah, haha sorry!! 🙂
Sarah says
Oh, that’s good. I just didn’t think that avocado frozen ice cream sounded very appetizing.
Lulu says
Black sesame seed, chocolate and coffee combo! sugar free!
Lauren says
Oatmeal cookie froyo! They had it at my local frozen yogurt place last summer and it was so delicious! Also, peanut butter Oreo, iced cupcake, and sugar cookie froyos! 🙂
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables says
This sounds super good, Katie! I actually have some avocado in the freezer, to keep it from going bad! Looks like I should turn it into dessert 🙂
Olivia@ OmNom Love says
I have to admit, I was a little disgusted by the title of this post. But I put avocado in smoothies, so this can’t be too different.
I would love it if you made a recipe for chocolate cheescake, butter pecan, brownie batter, pistacho, or birthday cake frozen yogurt.
Olivia@ OmNom Love says
I forgot that you already had a brownie batter recipe! Oops!
Nikki @ The Road to Less Cake says
So green! I need to get an ice cream maker because I want to make this right now!
Kelly @ HIdden Fruits and Veggies says
I love the sound of avocado in desserts! Sounds amazing. You should use some of your healthy nutella you made a while ago and make a nutella froyo– yummmm
Erin @ The Spiffy Cookie says
I bet I would love this. I cannot get enough of avocados lately.
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Genius!! That sounds so good!
Amy McCann says
I don’t know how to tell you this . . .YOU ARE MY BEST FRIEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I made your pie with avocado and fed it to my avocado hating family, they loved it! I know this will be AMAZING!
Vera says
Apple pie frozen yogurt!
Honey, What's Cooking says
this looks so good.. i need to get an ice-cream maker.
Shauna says
Any possibility of fro-yo that doesn’t involve a premade yogurt? I’m personally not really fan, but also find it easier to make things from scratch since I’m more likely to have the ingredients. Plus homemade is usually healthier 🙂
Kim says
Just make homemade yogurt first –google it, there are tons of recipes, you’ll need some type of probiotic powder though or some already premade yogurt to use as a starter. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be frozen yogurt, it would just be ice cream.
Danielle says
This sounds great! I’ve used avocado before in baking cupcakes & even my meat loving, avocado hating family devoured the cupcakes. Thanks, Katie!

Carroll says
What recipe did you use? can you give it to me, I’ve been wanting and looking for a recipe to make avocado cupcakes!
Jenni says
I love avocado! This looks awesome. Something with cinnamon and vanilla would be great too.
Francesca says
Avocados are literally one of my favourite foods. I’ve made chocolate avocado pudding before but never thought of making avocado frozen yoghurt, love this idea. Definitely going to make this 🙂 thanks Katie.
Lisa says
This looks delightful! I always love bright green juices or smoothies. Makes me feel healthier;)
Katie says
Oh my gosh, I got on your site (which I drool over all the time) to see if you had a healthy frozen yogurt recipe — and here it is, today! With avocado, my family’s favorite!! Can’t wait to try it tonight.
Liz says
I like the black sesame/coffee/chocolate combo idea! Also, ginger (or lemon-ginger?), fig, green apple, watermelon, butterscotch! Grapefruit! I’m getting really into this…
Ellie says
Red velvet please! Bonus points if it has a cream cheese swirl…
Grace says
She already has a red velvet recipe! I still have yet to try it, but it looks amazing! 🙂
https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2013/02/06/secretly-healthy-red-velvet-ice-cream/
No cream cheese swirl though 🙁
-Grace 🙂
Lisa @bitesforbabies says
I don’t know if they make a frozen yogurt version but I absolutely LOVE coconut gelato…YUM!
Lydia says
Pistachio frozen yogurt! I was just talking about it, then I checked your website and saw that you were asking for frozen yogurt ideas. It’s like it was meant to be 🙂
Have a nice day!
-Lydia
Anna says
I Second! This avacado yogurt looks like pistachio. I wonder if it just needs the nuts? What makes pistachio ice cream taste right?
Chocolate Covered Katie says
I actually do have a recipe for pistachio ice cream, but it’s going in the cookbook so I’m not allowed to post it :(.
Katy @ Katy's Kitchen says
I love avocado frozen yogurt! It gives such a creamy flavour with so many good fats. Yours is such a beautiful colour!
Kim says
does it taste like avocado? I love avocados but I can’t imagine an ice cream?
Chocolate Covered Katie says
Not really… I normally do not like avocado, but I liked this.
Alexis says
do you think you could just mix frozen avocado slices with frozen banana slices to make a soft serve ice cream without adding any extra sweetners–do you think that’d be good?
Chocolate Covered Katie says
You never know unless you try!
Grace says
Ooh! If you try it, please report back! 🙂
Can’t make this yet because my avocados haven’t ripened yet. Grr. 🙁
I’ve never tried avocado in dessert, but I love banana soft serve… So this will most likely be uber yummy because creamy+more creamy= heaven in creamy form 🙂
-Grace 🙂
Liz says
I’ve made delicious ice cream using only frozen banana before. Just make sure you chop it into small pieces before freezing. It makes it easier on your blender.
Sarah the Official CCK drooler says
Curious…did you try this on a big avocado hater? I’m one (I threw up an avocado chocolate mousse last time…no fun). I really love froyo though!
And if not, can you? I’m really cautious now, since that last episode. Thanks 🙂
Chocolate Covered Katie says
Why yes, I did… me! I hate guacamole and don’t like avocado mousse either (at least not the recipe I tried), but I liked this.
But if you threw up with mousse, I’d maybe not try this recipe. Perhaps you are allergic… or an even bigger avocado hater than me!
Sarah the Official CCK drooler says
Oh, oatmeal raisin froyo please! or Neapolitan? or butterscotch?
And I rocky road would be amazing, man.
Caramel? Reeses? Key lime? Vanilla Strawberry? Mocha?
And pina colada (virgin, pleaseandthankyou)!
Ok one last one…green tea froyo. Weird, I know. But I LOVE that stuff, so maybe you can try?
And tea reminds me that Chai would be amazing too!
I’m done now. Pinky Promise.
Norma Flora says
Grapefruit!! Most definitely. Sounds gross, but is wonderful.
Anonymous says
Hmmmm… I’ve never heard of avocado frozen yogurt (or ice cream!) before. Interesting idea!
I would love it if you made a chocolate or brownie batter frozen yogurt, a chocolate peanut butter cup yogurt, or strawberry or apple pie frozen yogurt. I would also LOVE vegan chocolate monster frozen yogurt (“Chocolate Monster” is chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips and chunks of peanut butter and was my favorite ice cream when I used to eat ice cream!)
Thanks for all of your great recipes!
Beth says
What happens if I try it without the milk? We are on the GAPS diet and can have yogurt, but aren’t having milk yet.
Kim says
I subbed in coconut milk and it worked wonderfully. Can you have that? Or almond milk?
Anonymous says
perfect…we can have almonds at this point. I will try to make some almond milk, thanks, I wouldn’t have thought of that!
Kim says
Even cashew milk would likely work wonderfully. All you have to do is soak a cup of raw cashews overnight, drain the water, run them through a blender with fresh water to the top, and voila, homemade cashew milk.
Alex @ Cookie Dough Katzen says
National frozen yogurt week? Woo hoo! Just the excuse I need to get some fryo this week 😀 My favorite flavor is the original tart. It would be cool to try a cookie dough froyo or cheesecake!
Kim says
Just made it and ate it–delish! I think I’ll turn it into a mint chocolate one next time. mmmm… thank you.
Elizabeth says
Coconut! With blueberries and dark chocolate chips on top 🙂
Aneliese (the veggie whisperer) says
Oh Katie this looks really good! If you’ve ever had avocado-based key lime pie you know you can sneak this mild legume into anything and have it be delicious! 😀 As for fro-yo flavors- ORANGE DREAMSICLE and WATERMELON FROSTY!!
Laurengee says
Sweet potato something!
Am says
Wow! Avocado ice cream is one of my favorite flavors. My favorite Indonesian dessert is fried bananas with avocado ice cream!! I wonder if this recipe for frozen yogurt will taste like the ice cream… 😀 thanks!
Am says
This may be a stretch to make healthy and vegan, but I had a couple bites of Rocky Road ice cream waaaayyyy long ago, and it would be cool to be able to have it as a healthified yogurt! Thanks for all the creative and tasty recipes!
Danica @ It's Progression says
My favorite flavor of frozen yogurt (besides vanilla, honestly) is “cookie monster.” It tastes like cookie dough and is amazing.
Sarina @ Earthgiven Kitchen says
Intriguing… I’ve made vegan avocado ice cream before but found the avocado taste was overwhelming (not good), but I didn’t make it in an ice cream maker….. now I want an ice cream maker!
Amy says
This is definitely a week worth celebrating! Actually, I’m kind of bummed that it’s not an entire month… I’d be the happiest girl around!
My favorite flavors of frozen yogurt would be salted caramel, dulce de leche, and pumpkin pie. Oh, and a few fruity flavors like passion fruit and guava and kiwi. I’m so indecisive; there are just too many yummy options!!
Hannah @ TalesFromTheLastFrontier says
Can I vote for all the flavors?? I have yet to met a frozen yogurt that I didn’t LOVE. I have been eating it all winter (even with this cold AK weather) ha ha. This looks great! I haven’t tried the avocado flavor before so this may be my next endeavor. Thanks for sharing!
Chocolatier says
No matter how important losing weight is, we all love desserts. And the sweeter the better. America has a definite sweet tooth.
Shelley says
I can’t wait to try this recipe – sounds so refreshing and sooooo creamy! Love that you specify a method option for people who don’t have ice cream makers – that’s a great tip! I didn’t have an ice cream maker until a few years ago, and would just sadly skip over recipes like this one because I didn’t think I had the ability to make them. Oh – and I agree with Lauren about the Oatmeal Cookie flavor! My local handmade ice cream shop has that flavor, and it’s amazing!
S.D says
I love froyo!..not sure how I feel about an avo flavor though. Chocolate hazelnut, french toast and good ol’ chocolate/vanilla are what I regularly go for 🙂
Anonymous says
Can you use a liquid sweetener such as agave?
Susan says
Lemon would get my vote. It reminds me of the lemon milk sherbet my mother used to make when I was a child, which I always loved. If I were to make this avocado frozen yogurt, I would have to make sure my avocado-disliking husband didn’t know what was in it, although the color would probably give it away… To me this sounds wonderful.
Anonymous says
A few weeks back I tried to make avocado ice cream with full fat coconut milk. No matter what I did it tasted like plain avocado. I even added a ton of lime and lemon juice and sweetener (maple syrup and coconut sugar) hoping to go a bit key lime. Then it didn’t mix well in the ice cream machine so it’s too thick and chunky, not creamy. Any ideas how to salvage it?
Ally says
Do this recipe but add some strawberries to it 🙂 trust me. Haha I’m also wondering if you finally found an acceptable way to eat avocado since you don’t like it!
Alyssa says
Hallelujah, it’s National Frozen Yogurt Week!
Jessica Piekenbrock says
I just tried a flavor at an ice cream shop called chocolate almond coconut chip… it had almond, coconut and choc chips mixed into a chocolate ice cream i believe. That would be really good as froyo 🙂
Michele says
Adzuki bean! Really popular in Asia and dee-lush 🙂 it will definitely need some sweetener, though…
Anonymous says
Avocado fro-yo! Avocado chocolate pudding is good so I’m sure this is! Sounds delish… and dangerous
Kathi Calvert says
what, no chocolate, Katie??????
Since avocado makes the best chocolate pudding, I bet some added
cocoa would work well here !Time to get that ice cream maker out of the box!

Rhubarbjamgirl says
This sounds delicious. My vote would be for lemon. To me that’s definitely a summer / chilled food flavour. I can just imagine a mild, creamy lemon frozen yoghurt. Maybe with some tangy swirls in it. Mm mm…
Moni Meals Fitness says
I love it Katie. Well done and I have actually tried this before. Great recipe and thanks for sharing!! 🙂
nessa says
Love the natural green color!
Megan says
Out of all the Ice Cream/Frozen yoghurt I’ve made avocado is by far the best! I made it with heavy whipping cream one time! Very high calorie, but so creamy and delicious! Basil is also really good to! And Vanilla Black Pepper!
Kiki says
I thought you were vegan and your recipes were all vegan?! Has something changed??! No judgement, just so confused 😉
Chocolate Covered Katie says
Yes, I am still a vegan. So Delicious yogurt (the one I’ve listed in the recipe) is vegan :).
ari @ theafterschoolchef says
This looks great! I made a smoothie recently with avocado, banana, and peanut butter and it was crazy good! Your blog is amazing, Katie. 🙂
Zosia says
made mine chocolate mint with the addition of 3T flax seed powder, 1/2c Dutch processed dark cocoa and one crushed Altoids peppermint (next time I’ll add two) – very creamy & yummy 🙂 Definitely no avocado taste. Thx CCK
Jan says
This sounds delicious!! I have tried avocado gelato at Capogiro’s, but it is a bit expensive so I would love to try this instead. I just wondered what kind of ice cream maker you have? I know you said Cuisinart, but I wondered which model? I think I need to get one, but can’t decide which one to get…
Unofficial CCK Helper says
I’m not Katie, but I use the cheapest one that Cuisinart makes. It’s just a regular ice cream maker, and it works great for all Katie’s recipes.
isabellA says
I think that you should try a strawberry flavered frozen yo.
Courtney says
Made this last night, it was incredible! Great texture made with the Vitamix and the taste was amazing! Thanks Katie for yet another great recipe that I can impress my non-vegan friends with. 😉
Becca B. says
I just made this using 1.5 cups fat free, PLAIN Greek yogurt, 2/3 cup soymilk, 1/2 tsp vanilla, a pinch of salt, and about half a Splenda packet. It turned out AMAZING. I would say the avocado doesn’t add so much flavor as it does texture – the fat makes the recipe creamy and airy, just like real ice cream. Cool, tangy, with just a hint of sweetness, and so creamy from the avocado. This recipe is definitely becoming a staple. I can’t believe I’ve never tried to make ice cream with avocado before. Katie, you’re a genius.
Paige says
I have a question: which ingredients should I freeze before putting it through the ice-cream maker?
Laura says
Katie can you use fat free yogurt or does it have to be full fat ? 🙂
Emma says
Gingerbread with fudge ripple 😀
Jordan says
I’ve tried a version of this using avocado, couple bananas, greek yogurt, and vanilla extract– and it is DELICIOUS. I have also added Dark Chocolate Cocoa on occasion Fabulous recipe!
anne says
Mmmm. I just made this tonight. It was simple, light, and delightful. Thanks for sharing! I skipped the vanilla (because I didn’t have any) and used honey instead of stevia.
Colleen Grossner says
Katie, This was delicious! AND so easy!! Thank you and I’m so glad you have found at least a “like” for avocado! Have a nice week!
sarah says
What a Godsend this is. I was in a predicament this morning because the yogurt I usually eat for my morning breakfast was sold out & I bought a different company and REALLY don’t like it. I was about to throw out all 6 of the 7oz yogurts, but decided to wait and first check out Katie’s site, and lo & behold, I find this recipe. I just made it with honey & xyletol and it’s in the freezer waiting to become ice cream. I tasted it before putting it in and it is yum!! I’m so excited about this because I think I’ll be having ice cream for breakfast from now on instead of plain yogurt with a bit of honey the way I used to. Thank you Katie! Thank you!
esther says
i use avocado, 2 frozen nanners, cocoa, almond milk, salt, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
Tally says
Can we use plain Greek yogurt or would that taste bad?
Jules says
Yum! I have some ripe avocados so I will definitely be trying this. I love chocolate pudding made with avocado so I’m sure this will be just as yummy. Thank you for the recipe! Love your site!
Jenn says
Thanks for the recipe!!!
I made this except with vanilla Greek yogurt and about 3/4 cup of cocoa powder, and it tastes amazing 🙂
Faith says
Plz make tiramisu ice cream!!!!
Lexy says
I have no idea what avocado frozen yogurt would taste like – i only use avocado in savory dishes, like soups and salads and what not. But i suppose it could work. I’ve actually been having a craving for ice cream lately, but I’m very picky about flavours – could I put some lime juice in this to make it taste more summer-y? Thanks for the great post!
tracy says
how many servings does this yield?
yvonne stuart says
when making ice cream in vitamix how do I freeze the left overs without getting freezer burn without having ice cream maker
