Crispy Avocado Fries

Did I mention their magical addictive properties?

Okay good; that means you’ve been warned.

When you slice up avocado, slather it in breadcrumbs, and bake until crispy, how could it not be magically addictive?

Not to mention, these are healthy french fries – They’re high in fiber, protein, and vitamins, with very little saturated fat.

The baked avocado fries are yet another recipe I came up with out of necessity.

Every time avocados go on sale at the grocery store, I am lured into buying extras, which almost always means I find myself scrambling to eat them all before they go bad.

Throwing out food is something I try as hard as possible to never do.

As soon as I tasted the first batch of homemade avocado fries, I immediately went back to the store to buy even more avocados.

And thus, the cycle began again…

For a delicious and vegan healthy meal, try them with these Sweet Potato Burgers or this Veggie Burger Recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2 large or 4 small avocados, peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup flour, such as garbanzo flour
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs, gf if desired (Or make your own by processing toasted bread in a food processor) (40g)

Instructions

  • For a larger batch, feel free to double the recipe! Preheat oven to 420 F. Grease a baking sheet, and set aside. Combine the garlic, salt, and flour in a shallow dish. Add the milk to a separate shallow dish. Coat each avocado slice in flour, then dip in the milk. Sprinkle breadcrumbs over each slice, pressing down lightly until the crumbs stick. Place on the baking tray. Bake 15-18 minutes, or until golden. Store leftovers in the fridge 2-3 days. If you try them, be sure to leave a review!

Can’t wait to try this…looks delicious! One question though…what kind of dipping sauce would you recommend?

I love avocados! I am definitely going to have to make this sometime!

  3. Sarah says

Hi, Katie! those look so yummy!
I have found that avocados keep in the fridge – I buy them in various stages of “ripe enough”, leave them on the counter until they are ready, then store them in the fridge until I need them.

Now these are just ridiculous (in a wonderful way)! Just made a batch, using almond flour instead of breadcrumbs. Great recipe, thanks!

    Hey Katie,

I made these last night and would love to feature on my blog. Would that be okay? I will absolutely mention and link to your site! Please let me know

    • Chocolate Covered Katie says

Of course! I am always honored when someone wants to share. Because google penalizes both sites if duplicate content is found, I only ask that recipes be linked to instead of reposted. But I’m always happy if someone wants to use any of the photos from my site 🙂

Hi Katie, I have to say that I absolutely love avocado and I tried your recipe this weekend – unbelievable! Even my kids agreed to try it with some ketchup. Thanks for that.

  7. Kara says

Do the avocados need to be ripe? Or would harder ones work since they will be baked? Thanks for any info!

    • Chocolate Covered Katie says

I would recommend ripe-but-not-overripe avocados. You want them firm but not rock hard. They should have a little softness when you press on them. But definitely not smushy. Not sure if that is a real word… 😕

Thank you Katie for everything you do for this website! My husband and I super appreciate it and are very excited to try even more of your recipes.

    You rock! <3

My boyfriend, his daughter and I love avocados. He makes a mean guac, and I know how to pick perfect avocados (wish I could do the same for melons…sigh). I’m going to try the fries above.
For fellow ‘cado lovers, check out OXO’s “3 in 1 Avocado Slicer”. I’m cheap, so spending $10 on a gadget is not something I ever do. However, this works so well, I bought one for my boyfriend’s brother as well. It’s also much safer and more effective when removing the pit. No, I don’t work for OXO. I just love this product.

So glad I found your website. I am trying to breastfeed my daughter who allergic to dairy and soy. Thank you so much for your recipes.

  12. Gail says

Just made these to use up a few avocados. These are delicious! Even my husband liked them and he “says” he doesn’t like avocados. Thanks so much for another great recipe!

  13. Christine says

I’m not sure what happened, but these turned out awful– incredibly bitter and the bread crumbs never toasted up (I even sprayed them with olive oil at the end to try to help toast them, but nothing). I followed he recipe to a T– Don’t know what I did wrong 🙁

    • Julie Dove says

Sounds like maybe one of the ingredients used was rancid or maybe the avocado was? I’ve made these many times always delicious! Definitely worth another try!

  14. Annie says

Kia ora from New Zealand, we grow some great avocados here, so I gave this recipe a shot, and, yes, these are fabulous, we will definitely make these again, multiple times whenever we have avocados!!!! Thank you so much for this recipe, it’s not something I would expect to find!!

  15. Valerie says

I wonder how well these keep? Do they get brown as with all avocado that turns brown soon after peeling it? You can slow it down by adding lime juice, which this recipe does not use, but it still only lasts so long in the frig.
    Thanks, Valerie

Made these today my three year old lloves avavados I added some paramasan cheese and it gave them a very satisfying crunch

This is a healthy and delicious meal for busy weeknights. I know the whole family would enjoy this. Thank you so much.

Really appreciate your efforts to reduce food waste. And for the logic behind your tasty recipes! I notice you said “Throwing out food is something I try as hard as possible to never do.” I like to ask people if they can help compost their food scraps which are a “resource”. Every bit of organic matter needs to go back to the land to feed the microbes in our soil. There are over one 10 billion microbes in one teaspoon of soil than there are people on the planet. They need a diversity of food, just as the billions of microbes in our gut need food to choose from. We need to not put organic matter (food waste) into plastic trash sacks, but rather get it back to the earth so the earth is enabled with food to function.

  19. Laura Hofferman says

I just made these and they are cooking in the oven. They look sooo yummy! Can’t wait to try them especially because i have an addiction to avocados!

  20. Veronica says

Could I use almond flour or coconut flour instead of the garbanzo flour? I’ve never heard of garbanzo flour and I doubt my store carries it.

  21. Eileen says

Hey, what is the flour and milk for? Because I just rolled the avocado in the bread crumbs with a little pressure to make the breadcrumbs stick. And they did! But is there another reason to use the flour/milk? Thanks.

  22. Danielle says

These were so yummy! I made them as written and thought they were good; I dipped them in fry sauce and they were amazing! Thanks for a great recipe.

  23. Carol says

These avocado fries are really, really good. I’m just beginning my keto journey and normally hated avocados. This recipe turned me into an avocado lover; so thanks Katie!

  24. Paul says

BTW someone mentioned applying a little olive oil. The oven temperature is in the smoke-point range for olive oil, so I’d recommend using another higher smoke-point oil, such as Avocado oil!!! 🙂

This recipe is incredible! I’ve wanted to make avocado fries for years but thought it would be too hard. This has converted me.
