Homemade peanut butter chips vs. store bought

Here’s everything included when you buy a bag of peanut butter chips from the grocery store: sugar, partially defatted peanuts, hydrogenated vegetable oil, corn syrup solids, palm kernel oil, salt, lecithin (soy), vanillin (artificial flavor)

And here’s everything included if you make your own DIY vegan peanut butter chips instead: peanut flour, coconut oil, pure maple syrup or stevia

Not only does the homemade version taste better than store bought (in my opinion!), it’s also much healthier. There are no fully or partially hydrogenated oils, corn syrup, or artificial flavors in these easy vegan peanut butter chips.

The cacao butter version is great for baking, and the coconut oil version is super tasty in no bake desserts or sprinkled over Banana Ice Cream or Coconut Ice Cream.

Once you try homemade, you will never go back!

Peanut Butter Chip Ingredients

Key ingredients

Peanut butter – The recipe works with either peanut butter or peanut flour. You could also use almond butter, cashew butter, pistachio butter, or even Coconut Butter.

Coconut oil or cacao butter – Refined or virgin coconut oil are both good options. Or use cacao butter for peanut butter baking chips. Do not substitute vegetable or canola oil, as these will not firm up when chilled and you’ll get melty peanut butter soup!

Sweetener – I like pure maple syrup or agave, for refined sugar free peanut butter chips. If you want a low carb or keto option, go with liquid stevia drops.

How to make vegan peanut butter chips

  1. Start with coconut oil or cacao butter in liquid form. If yours is solid, gently heat it up in the microwave or in a small pot on the stove top until melted.
  2. Combine the peanut butter or peanut flour, melted oil or butter, and sweetener of choice in a cereal size bowl. Whisk with a fork or spoon until it forms a smooth, thin paste.
  3. Spread the melted peanut butter sauce into a container lined with parchment paper or into chocolate chip shaped candy molds.
  4. Place in the freezer, and freeze until solid. Then remove and pop out of the molds or use a knife to cut the frozen peanut butter mixture into large or mini peanut butter chip pieces.
  5. Store in an airtight container in the freezer until you are ready to eat the chips or add them to cookies or other desserts. Leftovers should keep for up to four months.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil or cacao butter (50g)
  • 1/2 cup peanut flour (40g) or 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp pure maple syrup (15g) or liquid stevia drops to taste

Instructions

  • *Use cacao butter for peanut butter baking chips. The coconut oil version works well for topping ice cream, stirring into no bake desserts, or eating straight from the freezer.
  • 1. If coconut oil or cacao butter is not already in liquid form, gently heat for a few seconds in the microwave or in a small saucepan on the stove top until melted. Measure the 1/4 cup after melting.
  • 2. Whisk the peanut flour or peanut butter, melted oil or butter, and sweetener in a cereal size bowl until smooth.
  • 3. Spread the mixture into candy molds or into any container lined with parchment paper. (For the photos and recipe video, I used this Chocolate Chip Candy Mold.)
  • 4. Freeze until solid. Then remove and pop out of the molds, or use a knife to cut into peanut butter chip sized pieces.
  • 5. Store the homemade vegan peanut butter chips in a covered container in the freezer until ready to use. Frozen, they should keep for up to four months.

Do you think almond butter would work as well, in place of the peanut butter? The peanut butter sounds FABULOUS however! Think I’m going to try these today!!!

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

Since it’s powdered peanut butter, you’d have to use powdered almond butter… maybe almond flour? I have no idea if it would work but would be very interested to know of you try it :).

      1. Audrey says:

Oops!! Just realized that it is peanut flour not peanut butter. I tried the almond flour today because that’s all I had on hand! It’s delish!!! Although I think the peanut flour would be even better!!! Can’t wait to try! Oh and for the record I had to shoo my 5 year old away because she kept trying to eat it ALL!!!

  2. Nicole says:

Could you substitute the maple syrup for honey??? I do grocery shopping for my dorm room every few months (or whenever my parents come visit) And that probably won’t be until October. I would really love to make these

  3. Charlotte Zweigoron says:

Where do you purchase cacao butter? My first thought was the drug store where we used to buy bars of it to rub on our tummies when pregnant to prevent stretch marks. BTW, I love your website. I get absolutely lost going from one recipe to the other following interesting links along the way! Thanks for such a great job in making these foods so appealing and easy to make.

    1. Unofficial CCK Helper says:

Look at Whole Foods or online.

      1. Charlotte Zweigoron says:

Thank you for the super prompt reply… I go to Whole Foods about every other week to be sure I have my case of Kombucha and a small bag of organic decaf coffee (among other things, of course). I will look for the cacao butter…

  4. Claire Elizabeth says:

I wonder… if this would work with… COCONUT FLOUR? Coconut butter chips… Totally sounds like you, Katie! 😀

  5. Jennie says:

    Hey there 🙂
I just happened upon your website a short time ago and I have been LOVING all your recipes! 🙂 I’d really like to find ‘peanut flour’ to make your MUCH healthier peanut butter chips but I googled it and found some not so great info about PB2. 🙁
Basically I’m wondering if you know where I could source organic peanut flour instead.
    Thanks 🙂

    1. Unofficial CCK Helper says:

      Try Betty Lous.

      1. Jennie says:

What/Who is that? I’m in Canada. thanks 🙂

  6. carrie says:

Hi, I just tried to make these with coconut butter and it melted at room temp 🙁 Must it be cacao butter, the health store said it was pretty much the same

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

Unfortunately, you got some bad information. Coconut butter and cacao butter are definitely not the same thing.

  7. carrie says:

Can you tell me what kind of cacao butter you use? Also how big of a batch does this make?

  8. Laura Jones says:

I made these last night. I had to resort to making my own peanut flour. I called alllll around town, and no one knew it even existed! They turned out so yummy. I’m going to take these to work tomorrow and snack on them after my workout. Thanks!! 😀

  9. Melissa says:

Still looking for the molds used for these chips. Has anyone found them?
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Unofficial CCK Helper says:

      Hobby Lobby.

  10. Annie Criss says:

Would you please e-mail me? I would like to use your Peanut Butter Yogurt and Healthy Vegan Homemade Peanut Butter Chips recipe in a cookbook (which I will explain to you) and I would like to request your permission to use it. Thank you.

  11. Beatriz says:

Hey there. You mention that it would be best to use cacao butter if I were to use in baking. Do they get the same ‘effect’ as chocolate chips if I use cacao butter or will they still melt completely? There’s this recipe here that uses both peanut butter AND PB chips. Would it work with this homemade PB chips recipe?

  12. Eleanna Kirby says:

The recipe is wonderful! Please let me know if soy flour will substitute for peanut flour in the peanut butter chip recipe. Thank you:)

  13. DeDeNYC says:

    5 stars
These. Are. Awesome!!!!!! Soooo simple, and sooooo yummy!!! I’ve been looking for vegan peanut butter chips and can I tell you it’s impossible? I thought making them myself would be shear drudgery involving multiple exotic ingredients and procedures. Oh how wonderful you are for posting such a deliciously simple recipe! Tried it with the coconut oil and it was just heaven. When I can get my hands on some cocoa butter I’ll try it that way too. Thanks!!!

  14. Leigh says:

Never thought peanut butter would be okay with my diet. Thanks for that.

  15. Laura Weinstein says:

These are the most digusting things I have ever tried. There are many delicious recipes out there for this and they happen to be vegan anyway. My trouble is they are all too tender and don’t hold up to baking. I was hopeful for this one but they taste like cardboard. Should have known better…..there’s not enough sweet!

    1. Julie Dove says:

I think you must have mismeasured something. I’ve made these about twenty times and can vouch for the recipe.
