Homemade peanut butter chips vs. store bought

Here’s everything included when you buy a bag of peanut butter chips from the grocery store: sugar, partially defatted peanuts, hydrogenated vegetable oil, corn syrup solids, palm kernel oil, salt, lecithin (soy), vanillin (artificial flavor)

And here’s everything included if you make your own DIY vegan peanut butter chips instead: peanut flour, coconut oil, pure maple syrup or stevia

Not only does the homemade version taste better than store bought (in my opinion!), it’s also much healthier. There are no fully or partially hydrogenated oils, corn syrup, or artificial flavors in these easy vegan peanut butter chips.

The cacao butter version is great for baking, and the coconut oil version is super tasty in no bake desserts or sprinkled over Banana Ice Cream or Coconut Ice Cream.

Once you try homemade, you will never go back!

Peanut Butter Chip Ingredients

Key ingredients

Peanut butter – The recipe works with either peanut butter or peanut flour. You could also use almond butter, cashew butter, pistachio butter, or even Coconut Butter.

Coconut oil or cacao butter – Refined or virgin coconut oil are both good options. Or use cacao butter for peanut butter baking chips. Do not substitute vegetable or canola oil, as these will not firm up when chilled and you’ll get melty peanut butter soup!

Sweetener – I like pure maple syrup or agave, for refined sugar free peanut butter chips. If you want a low carb or keto option, go with liquid stevia drops.

How to make vegan peanut butter chips

  1. Start with coconut oil or cacao butter in liquid form. If yours is solid, gently heat it up in the microwave or in a small pot on the stove top until melted.
  2. Combine the peanut butter or peanut flour, melted oil or butter, and sweetener of choice in a cereal size bowl. Whisk with a fork or spoon until it forms a smooth, thin paste.
  3. Spread the melted peanut butter sauce into a container lined with parchment paper or into chocolate chip shaped candy molds.
  4. Place in the freezer, and freeze until solid. Then remove and pop out of the molds or use a knife to cut the frozen peanut butter mixture into large or mini peanut butter chip pieces.
  5. Store in an airtight container in the freezer until you are ready to eat the chips or add them to cookies or other desserts. Leftovers should keep for up to four months.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil or cacao butter (50g)
  • 1/2 cup peanut flour (40g) or 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp pure maple syrup (15g) or liquid stevia drops to taste

Instructions

  • *Use cacao butter for peanut butter baking chips. The coconut oil version works well for topping ice cream, stirring into no bake desserts, or eating straight from the freezer.
  • 1. If coconut oil or cacao butter is not already in liquid form, gently heat for a few seconds in the microwave or in a small saucepan on the stove top until melted. Measure the 1/4 cup after melting.
  • 2. Whisk the peanut flour or peanut butter, melted oil or butter, and sweetener in a cereal size bowl until smooth.
  • 3. Spread the mixture into candy molds or into any container lined with parchment paper. (For the photos and recipe video, I used this Chocolate Chip Candy Mold.)
  • 4. Freeze until solid. Then remove and pop out of the molds, or use a knife to cut into peanut butter chip sized pieces.
  • 5. Store the homemade vegan peanut butter chips in a covered container in the freezer until ready to use. Frozen, they should keep for up to four months.

Oh my gosh you are my best friend! I am addicted to peanut butter chips and now I have a healthy, fast, and easy version? Like I said, I already loved your blog, but now … 🙂
Would these work in cookies or brownies?
    Thanks and pinning!

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

      Yes, the cacao butter version.

  2. Anna @ Your Healthy Place says:

Ooh I love that you made these with peanut flour! I can only imagine how melt-in-your-mouth they are – coconut oil has that effect on everything. Amazing!

  3. Caitie says:

First thought when I saw these: “Oooh, I bet you could melt one or two of these into your oatmeal and it would be awesome!” (As I usually enjoy my overnight oats with PB2). Second thought: “O.O For once, I actually have EVERYTHING I need to make something. Must make now!” Haha, it sounds like a pretty cool idea. Can’t wait to try it out. 😀

  4. Rebecca says:

Oh my goodness, this recipe just made my day! I had all the ingredients (I went with the coconut oil) on hand and I’m about to eat the entire batch without sharing! They are so yummy!

  5. Hannah says:

    I want this. 0_0

Food thieves? Only when I’ve got one of these recipes cooked up in my freezer, then yes, I definitely worry about food thieves! 😉 Only my mother and sisters, though.

  6. jenlp says:

    yup, this is delicious!

  7. Clarissa says:

These look amazing!! Could you please make butterscotch chips??

Also, do you think you can bake with these chips, or are they strictly for snacking?

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

Cacao butter version is good for baking.

  8. Sarah McBride says:

Theses are really creative and look awesome! Thanks for putting this one out there : ) My old job had food thieves, once you get over the grossness, its pretty funny!

  9. Sadye says:

I don’t worry about food thieves, though one did steal half of my lunch once. I sort of had to laugh, because the thief left my carrots but took the bagel … guess the thief wasn’t interested in a balanced diet!

  10. Carolyn says:

    love it! does pb2 work?

  11. Allie C. says:

I bet these would be awesome made with honey and a sprinkle of salt. Yum yum yum.

I’d love to see a “what’s in my pantry/fridge” post. Your recipes are so awesome, I always want to run and try them immediately. Unfortunately, I almost *never* have all the ingredients on hand (I’ve never even heard of peanut flour). I’ve been collecting various things over the last several months I’ve been following you, but I feel like there’s still a lot I’m missing.

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

I have a general list of staples on my “recipe faq” page.

I’ve thought about doing a “what’s in my pantry” post in the past, but the truth is that it always changes! 🙂

      1. Anonymous says:

Oh, I hadn’t seen that. I’ll go look. Thanks!

I made your flourless chocolate chip cookie recipe yesterday and OH it was so good! And that batter!

  13. Mellissa says:

Can you make this with regular organic peanut butter (just peanuts and salt)?

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

You can… the texture is just more melty.

  14. Sean Cane says:

Um. How does delicious sound! These look awesome.

  15. Anonymous says:

Why can’t you use regular plain old peanut butter instead of powder? Wouldn’t that taste better, or absorb the other ingredients better?

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

Nope. The texture is actually better with peanut flour, although it technically does work with regular peanut butter.

  16. Aviva says:

Hi can’t wait to make these! Can you bake with the Peanut Butter Chips??

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

      The cacao version.
