Fishs Eddy

Spinach and Popeye

I was rejuvenated by the thick Coconut Chai Milkshake.

Ready to take on the world! Or our next destination, at least. I’d found this one the night before, while mapping out a rough itinerary. What did we do before google? Does anyone remember?

fishs eddy nyc

A new favorite store.

And it is called… Fishs Eddy???

Weird name, awesome place! Seriously, why did no one tell me such a store existed outside of my dreams? Imagine a room of wall-to-wall dishware in every shape, size, and color of the rainbow. What you’re imagining is called Fishs Eddy.

When I first got into photography, I thought one was supposed to use patterned dishware in flashy colors and shapes. But I’ve learned it’s actually better to work with plain dishes so that they don’t steal the thunder from your main subject—the food, itself.

However, plain need not equal boring.

I stuck to monochromatic dishes: a few baby bowls (shown in the above photo, under the sign that says “the little bowl that could”), a pink mug (top-right of the photo), and a little white plate. Oh, and I also found the cutest straws!

The best part about Fishs Eddy is that they will ship to your home. And because my home is in Texas, that meant no tax (which almost cancels out the shipping fee)! Plus it meant I didn’t have to carry the purchases through the city. On the other hand, this made it more difficult to restrain myself from buying out the store. But I’m proud of the job I did in treating myself—because, after all, I’m on vacation—yet not going overboard.

(By the way, my friend Jessica was not at all interested in Fishs Eddy. She did her own shopping at nearby stores, and we met up afterwards.)

Later in the evening, we got a quick bite to eat, courtesy of the Whole Foods hot bar.

The above picture is actually from last year, as I didn’t bother to take a photo this time. Yesterday’s dinner consisted of the following: okra gumbo, chana masala (I love their chana masala!), quinoa, and a raw kale salad with blueberries and strawberries.

Two favorite stores in one day!

Then we walked to the Harry Potter exhibit, which honestly was not worth the money. But I made up for it by coming back to the hotel and eating chocolate. Chocolate makes everything better ;).

What are your favorite types of shops?

When I was a kid, my favorite was obviously Toys R Us. As a teenager, I liked stores such as American Eagle and Gap. But after a while, there are only so many t-shirts, tanks, and jeans a girl can buy–especially when she’s not growing anymore. Now, my favorite stores are places like Barnes and Nobles, Crate and Barrel, and Whole Foods. Or even SuperTarget!

    You look BEAUTIFUL!

And oh my stars, how did I not know this store was there? I’ve been to NYC many times and never even heard of it until now. Now I want to go back just to see that store!

    • Sarahishealthy says

I wish there was a trader joes near me! Everyone always raves about that place and I’ve NEVER been 🙁

  2. Leslie says

I totally understand where you’re coming from. I love to buy clothes, but now I have jeans that I’ve owned for years so I really don’t need another pair because my legs have (finally!) stopped growing. Same thing with plain colored shirts and even shoes!

  3. Valerie says

That looks like the coolest store EVER! And you look absolutely beautiful in front of all the glassware.
I hate to shop. But I wouldn’t say no to those dishes!

  4. Sarahishealthy says

AWESOME store! It looks like a dream. Although I don’t do food photography, I still appreciate pretty dishware, for parties and all :).

  5. Michaela says

I like home stores even more than clothing shops! I went shopping only today and I had to stop myself from buying dishes and cutlery. (but I bought more clothes than home goods ;)) Also I love grocery shopping 😀
And I was really disappointed today, as I planned on buying shome shoes, but all the ones I liked were made out of leather 🙁

  6. NaturalAsCanBe says

My favorite stores are neat little ones–health food stores, all-natural bath & body (and other lovely-smelling goods of the sort) shops, and places with neat, unique little dishes and kitchenware and things. Pretty much any shop with one-of-a-kind stuff. <3 But I also like WholeFoods and Barnes and Noble. I wish we had a WholeFoods and Barnes and Noble nearby; I just have to use the GreenWise sections at Publix (guess there just aren't enough health nuts living around here), and Books-a-Million isn't quite as good as Barnes and Noble. I HATE Walmart. 😛

  7. Erika K says

    What a fun find!
I used to hate shopping at places like Pottery Barn. I considered those places “old lady” stores. But now that I have my own place, I guess I am an old lady and actually look forward to shopping at such places!

  8. Jenny says

Haha, actually I wouldn’t have thought Toys ‘R’ Us as an obvious choice for a child… 😛 Or maybe I was just a super weird child – which is ten times more likely. I loved Borders, the bookstore, as a kid. That and the Royal Sporting House (sports goods) were my favourite stores when I was little… Now, I have to agree that I love Whole Foods. I still love sports stores (“Can I have another basketball?! Ooh look an autographed ManU soccerball!”), too, but bookstores and art stores are at the top of my list. And I love poking around thrift stores and consignment stores to see what sorts of hidden treasures I can find. 🙂

Looks like another good day in NYC for you! Glad to see you’re having fun. Thanks for sharing!

  9. The Teenage Taste says

Clothes shopping used to rein supreme for me but now I’d have to say my favorite is shopping for groceries! I love looking at different ingredients and coming up with ways to use them. 🙂

  10. Jennifer JCD says

Wow, sounds like a great vacation so far! Thank you for all the updates. The kitchenware store looks incredible!

My favourite stores are camping equipment stores (Campers Village, MEC), the local arts/pottery guild shop (WARES), and thrift stores (clothing, books, unique dishware).

  11. Mellie says

Pfft, you can never have too many cute clothes! My favorite chain stores are Aeropostale and Icing, but I really like local jewelry stores/boutiques. There is (or was) one in Asheville called Dolce Vita, they always had the cutest stuff!

  12. Lorin says

I love shopping at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Crate & Barrell and Barnes N Noble. Anywhere with cool food pretty much 🙂

  13. katie @KatieDid says

ahh what a fun day, I’ loving your recaps so much! I would just die in a store like that, I’m not sure I could ever make a decision! My favorite stores nowadays are target (love), and forever 21 for clothing, and I also love fun kitchen gadget stores and thrift stores. I’m in love with thrifting!

  14. Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats says

That store looks awesome! 🙂 My favorite stores now are probably pretty much the same as yours–I love Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s especially. I could spend all day in either one! lol. I have never actually been in a Crate and Barrel but I love browsing their website!

  15. Faith @ For the Health of It says

My favorite shops are clothing and home goods…but I’m also all about a good thrift store now and again for some awesome scores!

  16. Sarah says

My favorite store is a local antique/vintage store in Knoxville called Nostalgia. So many funky and old things… plus there’s an in-house dog and cat to play with while you’re shopping.

If you’re still in NY, there’s this really cool store SoHo. It’s this really huge Asian market that has aisles of Asian candy and knick-knacks. Probably not vegan candy but still really cool!

  17. kaila @ healthy helper! says

Okay that is totally my kind of store~! I have got to find that store next time iI’m in NYC! And I love Whole Foods of course too!

  18. Aine @ Something to Chew Over says

I love speciality food stores! I fell in love with Target when I spent a summer in the US but there aren’t any here in Ireland 🙁

  19. Ashley C says

You look beautiful!! I just love hearing about your NYC trip thus far. It is weird as I am getting older I no longer go straight to the clothing stores but find my way looking at home and decorating stores as well!! i am in love with the IKEA store!!

  20. Lexi says

Ooh, Fishs Eddy looks like such a cool store! I’m definitely going next time I go to New York 🙂

My favorite types of shops are clothing stores (when I’m in the mood), grocery stores (Whole Foods!), and home furnishing stores like Restoration Hardware, Crate & Barrel, Pier 1…

  21. Ragnhild says

When I was in New York, I almost moved in to Whole foods! That must be the best store ever! We dont have anything like it in Norway though :((
For clothes, Im huge on online shopping 😀 Its kind of an addiction. I love Asos and Nelly.com- both great places with too many beautiful clothes 🙂

  22. Lauren B. says

Luna Chocolate-Dipped Coconut bars are the jam! They taste JUST like Girl Scout Samoas (but they’ve changed the name to “Caramel De-lites”- so wrong). You may have never tried Samoas, being vegan and all, but trust me, they’re awesome! Nice to know I can have the same flavor in a healthier bar rather than a cookie.

  23. Emilia says

Whole Foods is my home away from home; when I find it, I’m gleeful and relaxed 🙂
My favorite stores have definitely shifted now that I’m an adult. I’m more into food and decorating stores than chain shopping stores. My favorites being C&B, Anthropologie, Target, Home Goods, Whole Foods, Costco and a few other local ones 🙂

  24. Alex@Spoonful of Sugar Free says

OH MY GOSH! That store look AMAZING! I want to go there!

I’m not much of a shopper, but I love any kind of food store

  25. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says

Oh heck yeah baby that is my kinda store!!!! WHOA!!! I would have had a FIELD DAY!!! in there. Or at least had to really stop myself from having one!

White dishes are great, as are monochromatic ones, but I love anthropologie dishes, or ones that look like that that are from antique or thrift stores and I pay $1.50 for a great little saucer or plate that would be $14 for 1 at Anthro. That’s how I shop for blogging dishes.

I have a serious obsession with it too 🙂 I post about my thrift store finds like at least every few weeks. I have even gotten comments telling me I am a shopaholic. Maybe I am but I am all about the cheap thrills…like for 7 bucks walking out with 3 amazingly cute, unique one of a kind things…that what I like to do 🙂

I’d love to have shopping WITH you!!!

  26. Lexi @ A Spoonful of Sunshine says

Well, darn. If food blogger heaven exists, I think you may have found it at that dishware store 🙂

  27. Kailey says

If they could make one of those stores here, where I live, I would be the happiest girl ever! It all looks so cute, especially those blue bowls :).

Happy Friday from a new reader :).

  28. Marianne says

I think it’s awesome that they will ship your purchases for you – makes getting those breakables home in one piece so much easier than trying to pack them in your luggage yourself.

I have a variety of shops I love for different reasons/items. Just depends on what I’m in the mood to buy!

  29. BroccoliHut says

Totally adding a visit to that store to my bucket list!! I heart dishware.
My favorite stores are Williams Sonoma and Crate & Barrel.

  30. Doris says

    Hey KATIE
I love that you are basically providing me with a guide on where to eat in NY, because I am going to be there for the entire month of Sept! Im from Austria and already soo excited about all the delicious vegan/vegetarian restaurants I will find on my way. Please go to one lucky duck and tell me how it is there, if it is worth going or simply totally overpriced.

    Greetings from Vienna,
    Dorissimaaaa 🙂

P.s.: just froze a pineapple & coconut milk to make your yummy pineapple floats for my bf when he comes home on Monday =)

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Hey Doris!! Thanks so much for the sweet comemnts… and it’s so exciting to hear from someone in Austria. I’ve always wanted to go!
As for OLD, I did do a post about their desserts last year (put “one lucky duck” into my search bar and you’ll find the post). It wasn’t my favorite place :(. But I know a lot of other people like it, so don’t write it off just because of me ;).

Have a ton of fun in NY! I wish I could be there with you!

  31. Lorin says

I just finished your chocolate chip blondie dip, it was delicious. I managed to spread it out for 3 days…sad it’s gone though :/ Glad you are having fun in New York City!

  32. Doris says

P.p.s.: don’t forget to stop by my blog, I am pretty new to this and just got started but I love it .. you are my inspiration on eating healthy, Katie 🙂
(except – and this most come as a big shocker for u – I shouldn’t eat chocolate because it most likely triggers my major migraines) 🙁

  33. Katherine says

As much as I enjoy Whole Foods, my true love lies with Central Market. I can spend hours there! I love Trader Joe’s too, and it’s too bad we don’t have one in Texas. 🙁
West Elm is another big one for me. I can spend ages in there planning the decor of my future home. Hey, a girl can dream!

  34. Emma (Sweet Tooth Runner) says

I MISSED YOU KATIE!!! Aaah the minute I got back home I pretty much ran straight to my computer to catch up! I LOVE that you’re doing 2 posts a day because more Katie is always a good thing 🙂

SO JEALOUS of you in New York! That store looks amaaazing! I LOVE pretty plates and bowls, especially ones with Peter Rabbit on it 😉

P.S. You look so BEAUTIFUL and that blue is so gorgeous on you!

  35. Beth Newby says

I stumbled across Fishs Eddy a few years ago when in NYC. OMG, I LOVE the place like you do. Unusual, funky items you don’t see just anywhere, actually just there! When I found it I fell in love but my husband walked thru with me, didn’t see the “thrill” in it, so I sent him out on the streets to people watch while I took my time. Another great place you’d probably love in NYC is called “Pearl River”. It’s a HUGE place with everything Asian and SUPER great prices. I still adore my cute little doggie themed rice bowls I picked up there for I think $2.79 each.

  36. k says

Thats funny you said that (about the white plates) because I used to think that too until I came to your blog! A lot of your posts have the flashy colors and I thought it was weird because I wasnt used to seeing that on major food blogs, but thats what makes your photography unique and recognizable so I really like it now. You make food better than food. You make it fun girly happy food 🙂

  37. Liz says

I love shopping at food shops, and my fave is Central Market in Texas. However, now that I live in Missouri, the closest thing to Central Market is Trader Joe’s, which is okay, but it doesn’t do it for me! I am on a continous search for something comparable to CM here in Missouri…. 🙁

  38. Casey says

Oh my gosh- I can’t believe there’s someone else who loves dishes/glassware as much as I do, lol. I’ve recently become vegan, and was worried about giving up baking (my fears have abated). Thanks so much for your posts- I love reading your blog!

  39. Beth says

I stumbled across Fish’s Eddy a few years ago while in NYC for a book event. The place is INCREDIBLE! It has the coolest, funky dishes. It’s one of those places I actually said “Whoa” out loud and was immediately comfortable in. I wish they’d franchise the place and have a store in Tucson! But, Katie, if you ever do come to Tucson, I can suggest several funky places you’d enjoy!

  40. kelly says

how can a harry potter exhibit not be worth it??! sometimes i think youre from a different planet, but then i remember that you love chocolate just as much as me so it must be the same planet!!
