Secretly Healthy Avocado Chocolate Pie

Secretly healthy avocado desserts

I know what you might be thinking.

There goes another millennial with her eye rolling basic avocado obsession, ruining dessert by putting avocado in everything.

But the concept of sweet avocado desserts is actually not a millennial invention at all.

Populations around the world have been using the superfood fruit to make Avocado Smoothies, milkshakes, pudding, fruit salad, and Avocado Ice Cream for years.

High in healthy fats (over 75% of the fat in avocado is the heart healthy unsaturated kind) and with a mild flavor, the creamy fruit is the perfect base for chocolate recipes like this rich chocolate avocado pie.

Also, just be glad I didn’t make a recipe for avocado toast chocolate bars.

Yes, such a thing is a real product you can buy at the store.

And yes, it has actual pieces of avocado toast smashed into the chocolate bar.

I can’t even.

(Although, to be fair, I am intrigued.)

Avocado Chocolate

How does it taste?

The first thing you all probably want to know is Does this pie taste like avocado?

Thankfully, the answer is No.

Guacamole is great and all, but I don’t want guacamole in my dessert.

If you are skeptical because you’ve tried desserts in the past that combined chocolate and avocado and did have an unfortunate taste?

Trust me, I’ve been there too.

In this deliciously healthy dessert recipe, I use two different types of chocolate, giving the pie a chocolatey brownie flavor and completely masking the avocado.

This means you can enjoy all the health benefits and the silky smooth texture without ever being able to tell the secret ingredient is there.

Use up leftover avocado in this Avocado Salad Recipe

Vegan Chocolate Avocado Pie

Ingredients for the recipe

Avocado – Mashed avocado makes up the base of this pie and stands in for the heavy cream or egg yolks in most traditional chocolate pie recipes.

For the best flavor and texture, be sure to start with ripe avocado.

Cocoa Powder – I highly recommend using Dutch process cocoa powder, which should be readily available in most grocery stores.

If you cannot find this ingredient, you can swap it out for regular unsweetened cocoa powder or even hot chocolate mix.

Chocolate Chips – Melted chocolate chips add richness and a smooth texture. You can use milk chocolate, semi sweet chocolate, dark chocolate, or even white chocolate.

If you do not have chocolate chips on hand, you can substitute ten ounces of your favorite chocolate bars.

For a vegan chocolate avocado pie, go with plant based and dairy free chocolate chips. Or for a low carb and keto dessert, use sugar free chocolate chips.

Sweetener – My favorite option is pure maple syrup. Honey, agave, regular white sugar, or unrefined coconut sugar are fine as well.

To make the dessert without sugar, try xylitol or erythritol.

Salt – Throw in a pinch of salt (just a fourth teaspoon for the entire recipe) to balance the sweetness and add depth of flavor.

Vanilla – This ingredient is optional. I like the hint of vanilla it imparts on each bite.

Avocado chocolate pie crust

Feel free to use your favorite store bought or homemade crust for this chocolate pie.

Or keep it crustless, serving the chocolate filling in ramekins as chocolate mousse.

Here is the no bake pie crust recipe I used:

1 1/2 cups raw or roasted nuts of choice, 1 cup dates or another dried fruit, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 2 tablespoons Dutch cocoa powder or 3 tablespoons regular unsweetened cocoa powder.

Combine all crust ingredients in a food processor until fine crumbles form. Then press the sticky crumbles firmly into a lined 8 inch or 9 inch springform pan.

Weight, so what it would weigh on a food scale once the pit and peel are removed. It’s about 3 avocados.

  1. Jen says

What sweetener and chocolate chips were used to determine the nutrition facts? Curious to know what the carb load would be if using stevia (or similar) and no sugar added chocolate chips (keto version)….

  2. Home Plix says

This chocolate avocado recipe is really amazing. It’s also so tasty and delicious. I just love it and try to do this. Thanks for sharing such an amazing post.

  3. Michele says

    Hi,
How do you think it will turn out if I use the Lily’s dark chocolate stevia sweetened chocolate chips instead of regular ones?
Thank you SO much for all of your amazing recipes!

    • Jason Sanford says

Those normally work just fine in recipes that call for regular chocolate chips. I don’t see why they wouldn’t work here, but be sure to report back for the rest of us if you try!

Thank you for another FABUlous recipe, Katie. I made the crust with walnuts and dates which paired well with the filling. Totally amazing!

    • Jason Sanford says

Sorry we have not tried so can’t say how it would taste or what the texture would be. If you experiment, be sure to report back!

Made this crustless for Thanksgiving, sooo good! Uses Lily’s sugar free chocolate chips, erythritol with a splash of liquid sucralose and made it keto. My family didn’t even notice. Thank you! New fav recipe and so easy! The chips melted in like 2 minutes in the microwave. I also added a splash of whipping cream.

    • Jason Sanford says

Hi, it means use your favorite! 🙂 So regular sugar, coconut sugar, maple syrup, honey, erythritol, or whatever you normally use to sweeten things if given a choice.

  6. Brittany says

Added like double the chocolate, 1 tbs melted butter and a little sugar free cool whip mixed in. Always yummy with cool whip on top and sliced strawberries.

  7. Kathy L says

Soooo good!! I used coco powder, meted sugar free chocolate squares ( Hershey’s and See’s sugar-free chocolate bar) and 1 1/2 tablespoons of agave syrup to sweeten. I also chopped sugar-free coconut candy bars and sprinkled on top (because I love coconut!). Now I have a favorite recipe to avocados that we have growing!

  8. Constance says

This was so creamy and rich in flavor! I made the crust with pecans. I used 4oz of dark chocolate and 4oz of semi-sweet chocolate. For the sweetener, I used brown sugar. I was worried that the brown sugar would be gritty but I didn’t notice it at all. I used large avocados and hence 1.5 large avocados was enough for the recipe. Your recipes never disappoint. 🙂

  9. Mandy says

This says vegan, but I’m curious about the chocolate chips. Don’t they have a milk product in them? If so did you use a vegan chocolate chip product?

  10. Sarah says

Hello- can cacao powder be used instead of cocoa? Trying to avoid going to the store if possible! Thank you! Can’t wait to try!

    • Jason Sanford says

Sure, but for best taste you should still use the dutch if you can – or the melted chocolate instead of dutch! For the regular cocoa powder, it’s fine to sub cacao powder.

Hi yes! The crust is written out in the post (right under where it says “More Crazy Ingredient Recipes”)

  11. Suzie says

Hi, i dont have a springform pan so put this in a normal one. Will it be ok to serve ? Or can i bake this cake as it is to make it firmer? Thanks !

  12. Coco says

Urgent! How long does it take to set? I am having a timed competition with friends over a face call and I wanted to make sure I could make it in time, approx 30 min. Love the recipe by the way, I’m super excited to try it out!

  13. Lisa says

Tricked my daughter into eating some. She loved it! Couldn’t wait to have another slice. She couldn’t believe it had avocado in it.

  14. Mojoblogs says

This is really interesting. Great way to make the children eat avocados. Thank you for this! I can’t wait to try it. 🙂

  15. Cinead says

Blimey I so wish the measurements would be in grams for us rest-of-the-worlders out there… Good looking recipe nonetheless.

  16. Darlene K Lubinus says

Found some forgotten avocados in the fridge and made this up. What a GREAT RECIPE! I have made pudding before but not pie. This was a fabulous add to my recipe stash. I am thinking of trying it with mint choco chips or extract next time. (I too am curious about freezing)

  17. Amy says

Can you use frozen diced avocado? Defrost first? Anyone try it yet? I have a surplus that I use in smoothies and I’m looking for other ways to use it!
PS-I love CCK and have never been disappointed by a sweet or savory recipe I have tried. Keep ’em coming please~

  18. Luckyduck says

WoW, is this ever good!! So creamy, chocolatey and rich! Thanks for a fantastic recipe using avocado! Definitely a keeper!

  19. Hanna says

Delicious! FYI: adding melted chocolate to cold avocados 🥑 equals a very stiff batter! Like a thick mud pie! On a good note, though, my avocados were ripe days before I needed to make my pie, so I stuck them in the freezer whole then put them in the fridge the night before to thaw (or run them under warm water and set on the counter for an hour, as I saw on wholesomeyum.com). They turned out great and were mushy enough to mix into the batter by hand, as I needed to do with my thick sticky batter! 😆 So, next time I will make sure they are room temperature! I added the batter to a keto almond flour pie crust. Delish!

  20. Josie says

Made this tonight. There was some user here. I also had to add some oat milk as the food processor would not blend it otherwise but it still turned out great. Used a graham cracker crust. My 10 yo and her friend both approved and my kiddo is very very picky. Will definitely make again!

  21. Jill says

This is an amazing recipe and so delicious. Great for low carb and no sugar diet. I will be making this again. I recommend using a mixer not a blender!!

  22. Patty says

Where I live we do not have “regular” chocolate chips, but rather white chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, and dark cholocate chips. For the recipes where only chocolate chips are mentioned, should I use milk or dark chocolate (or what’s the cocoa percentage roughly)?

  23. Colleen Haig says

Please tell me where the crust recipe is. I’d like to try this recipe but not without the crust. Thanks

  24. Chandra says

Mine came out solid like a fudge pie. I’m wanting to make it lighter, sort of fluffier? Any suggestions while still keeping the sugar down?

  25. Jodi says

delicious pie, I’ve made it several times and always get compliments on it. You really can’t detect an avocado taste in this pie, it’s so creamy and rich in the chocolate flavor but with the nutritional benefits of the avocado!

  26. Vicki says

When making for company, should this be made day of or can you make it ahead of time without sacrificing textures of crust, etc.?
    Thank you.
