Healthy Apple Oatmeal Recipe

Healthy apple oatmeal breakfast

Delicious apple cinnamon oatmeal is perfect for cold winter mornings, when all you want to do is curl up under a mountain of blankets and go back to sleep.

The promise of sweet cinnamon apples and creamy oatmeal will make you actually want to get out of bed and into the kitchen.

You can make it on the stove top or in a slow cooker, and the filling healthy breakfast recipe is super quick and easy to throw together.

This homemade apple oatmeal recipe even includes a high protein option, to keep you full for hours.

Apple cinnamon oatmeal ingredients

The no bake and simple apple oatmeal recipe calls for oatmeal, apples, cinnamon, salt, milk of choice, sweetener of choice, and optional raisins.

Great topping ideas include diced walnuts or pecans, almond butter or peanut butter, shredded coconut, sliced strawberries or bananas.

Or throw in a handful of chia seeds or flax seeds for added fiber and a fun texture.

Pretty much any milk will work here, so go with your favorite. Try almond milk for low calorie oatmeal, or coconut milk for vegan oatmeal that tastes like dessert.

For the best apple oatmeal taste and thick, creamy texture, do not substitute water for any of the milk.

Sweeten with your choice of all purpose granulated or liquid sweetener. Options that work include pure maple syrup, honey, agave, coconut sugar, date sugar, brown sugar, or erythritol for a sugar free version.

The amount of sweetener will depend on whether you use unsweetened milk and your personal taste buds.

The recipe can be dairy free, gluten free, added sugar free, and vegan. For apple pie protein oats, add a scoop of your favorite protein powder before cooking.

Gala Apples

What type of apples?

Pretty much any apple variety works here.

Look for either red apples or green apples at the store that feel crisp, not soft or mushy on the outside. Some of my favorites include Braeburn, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala apples, or Pink Lady apples.

You may peel the apple skin before dicing or leave the peel on for extra fiber. It is entirely your choice.

Apple Cinnamon Oats

Steel cut oats or rolled oats

This recipe was adapted from my Banana Oatmeal and calls for old fashioned or Irish rolled oats. Quick oats or instant oats can be substituted in an equal amount.

If you prefer to make apple oatmeal with steel cut oats, follow this Crock Pot Oatmeal recipe, adding in two cups diced apple and one and a half teaspoons cinnamon.

For a gluten free breakfast option, look for certified gluten free oats or substitute rolled quinoa flakes instead.

Healthy Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

How to make apple pie oatmeal

Step one is to combine the rolled oats, diced apple, cinnamon, salt, milk of choice, and optional sweetener in a medium saucepan.

Bring these ingredients to a boil, then continue to cook the stovetop apple cinnamon oatmeal over low medium heat. As it thickens, stir frequently to prevent sticking.

Once the contents of the pot reach a porridge consistency, portion into bowls and serve hot, garnished with toppings of choice.

After the apple oatmeal cools down, refrigerate any leftover oatmeal in an airtight covered container for up to five days.

If you want to turn the recipe into apple overnight oats, make the oatmeal the night before. Let it cool, then transfer to a covered mason jar or dish. Refrigerate overnight, then eat cold or reheat in the microwave or on the stove top with a little extra milk.

I have not tried preparing the recipe in an Instant Pot or microwave or turning it into apple cinnamon slow cooker oatmeal or baked apple oatmeal.

Vegan Apple Oatmeal Porridge

Sautéed apple cinnamon oats

For an easy morning meal, I like to simply combine everything in one pot and cook it all at once until thick and creamy.

If you are feeling ambitious, feel free to sauté the cinnamon apples separately for extra flavor and buttery richness, using the following method.

Heat a little coconut oil or butter (or plant based butter) in a small saucepan. Stir in the diced apples and cinnamon, and sauté for five minutes or until the apples soften.

Using gram measurements

For those who wish to use a food scale instead of measuring cups and spoons, here are the gram measurements to use.

480 grams milk of choice, 90 grams rolled oats, and 150 grams of diced apple (measured after dicing). Also remember to include the salt and cinnamon.
