Healthy Cookies

These chocolate chip healthy cookies are soft, chewy, and the perfect healthy dessert recipe.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 9 minutes
Total Time 19 minutes
Yield 10 – 14 cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup oat flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp sugar, unrefined if desired
  • 4 tbsp coconut sugar or brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup chocolate chips, or more as desired
  • 2 tbsp vegetable or melted coconut oil
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3-4 tbsp milk of choice, as needed

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 380 degrees F. Combine dry ingredients, and mix well. Add wet ingredients, and form into a large ball. Make little balls from the big one. Either refrigerate until cold, or bake right away. Bake 9 minutes. Remove from oven when they’re still undercooked, then let cool 10 minutes before removing from the tray. They firm up considerably while cooling. If the cookies didn't spread enough for your liking, just smush down with a spoon. You can also make extra cookie dough balls and freeze to bake at a later date.

Notes

For soft chocolate chip cookies, store in an airtight plastic container. For crispy cookies, store in a glass container.

    I think you are the answer to my prayers! After a run in with the cookie dough last night, I resolved to (once again) cut out refined sugar. I have no self control with anything that has refined sugars and was on the hunt for recipes that use vegan/low sugar/alternative sweeteners (and gluten free). I have food allergies to egg and dairy and wheat/gluten to your recipes are a God send! Even the ones that aren’t GF I can modify. Thanks so much! YAY! I can eat the things I love and not feel guilty! 😀

    Are Sweet Leaf Vanilla Creme Flavored Liquid Stevia drops the same as NuNaturals? Or do you prefer NuNaturals for a certain reason? When I was at Whole Foods, they only had Sweet Leaf. But, I can order NuNaturals online and I am just wondering which is better?

      Skinny Snickerdoodles

      1/4 tsp cream of tarter (optional)
      1/4 tsp plus 1/8 tsp baking soda
      1/4 cup white sugar (or sucanat)
      1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
      1 and 1/2 tablespoons nondairy milk of choice
      1/4 cup vegan butter sub, such as Earth Balance
      Preheat oven to 330 F. Combine dry ingredients and mix very, very well. In a separate bowl, melt the vegan butter, then stir in vanilla and milk. Pour dry into wet and mix again. Form balls. For true snickerdoodles, roll each ball in a mix of cinnamon and sugar (either equal parts OR two parts sugar to one part cinnamon, depending on how cinnamon-y you want your cookies). If you want soft cookies, you’ll need to get the balls very cold. (So roll the balls, cover in the cinnamon-sugar, then fridge until cold.) Cook for 9-10 minutes. They’ll look way underdone when you take them out, but that’s ok.

      I haven’t tried these with a gf mix, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. (Edit: if you read the comments, many commenters have successfully tried different gf versions.) They will keep at least four days, in a lidded plastic container. (As a general rule, you should store soft cookies in plastic containers and crispy cookies in glass ones.)

    I have a question though: I’ve really been craving popcorn bars, obviously in a lower in sugar, lower in calories, healthier form! Do you think you have any recipes like that?

      It’s actually a really weird issue… I think it’s a traffic thing, because it’s only a problem for some people! And if you come back in a day or two, you’ll probably be able to see it again! I can see it fine right now. Weird, right? I don’t understand computers! 🙁

    I loved your mocha no bake cookie…I made several adjustments. For the flour, I used almonds and turned them into flour 3/4c, 1/4 of oat flour I used flax….instead of choc. chips, I used flax seeds and chia seeds. Substituted fresh coffee for the water….
    Holy cow!

    I made 4 different recipes of your cookies today for gift boxes. They turned out GREAT! Christmas cookies are a Christmas tradition, and I thank you for helping me make that tradition healthier for my friends/family.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have loved you from the day I discovered you, in a Facebook post from a friend, a couple of months ago. I pin everything of yours, so much so that I created a separate board just for your stuff!

    The recipes I’m used to make tons of cookies, so I doubled yours, since yours make a smaller batch (NOT a complaint!). My oven is goofy, so the only thing I did different is approximate the cooking times/temps. I do have an oven thermometer to help me with temps, but the oven itself doesn’t maintain a constant temp.

    I would love to see a more in-depth blog about coconut butter/coconut oil vs other butters/oils, and the differences with all the milks (cow milk, %’s, goat milk, almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, canned coconut milk). Are they interchangeable with each other in recipes? It’s pretty confusing to me.

      Coconut butter is not interchangeable with the oil. Think of it as the difference (texture-wise) between peanut butter and peanut oil. As for milks, they are often interchangeable, but each will yield a different taste and sometimes a different texture in a recipe. It just depends on the recipe :).

    Hi Katie…it’s NOT a cold snowy day here in Florida, but it is a bit overcast & rainy…a perfect day to try your Chocolate Chip Cream Cheese Cookies…so…first they are DELECTABLE! I used real cream cheese ( Temp Tee Whipped Cream Cheese) I had to make a second bowl of the cream cheese mixture …because I couldn’t get the dry mixture to form a ball …I mixed about 2 T. of the whipped cream cheese with 1 T melted coconut oil and a splash of vanilla and added it to the bowl…this time it worked…I was able to form a ball and make the cookies. Hard to wait the 10 minutes for them to firm up after baking…..really yummy. I got 18 little balls and therefore 18 cookies. Next time I might add some chopped nuts. Thanks to you I am now able to convert not so healthy desserts into healthy desserts by substituting all the good ingredients you use…ie., coconut oil, xylitol, healthy flours and so on?. You are the BEST, Katie. Thanks for all the inspiration and yummy recipes! ❤️ Barbara

    Hi Katie…it’s NOT a cold snowy day here in Florida, but it is a bit overcast & rainy…a perfect day to try your Chocolate Chip Cream Cheese Cookies…so…first they are DELECTABLE! I used real cream cheese ( Temp Tee Whipped Cream Cheese) I had to make a second bowl of the cream cheese mixture …because I couldn’t get the dry mixture to form a ball …I mixed about 2 T. of the whipped cream cheese with 1 T melted coconut oil and a splash of vanilla and added it to the bowl…this time it worked…I was able to form a ball and make the cookies. Hard to wait the 10 minutes for them to firm up after baking…..really yummy. I got 18 little balls and therefore 18 cookies. Next time I might add some chopped nuts. Thanks to you I am now able to convert not so healthy desserts into healthy desserts by substituting all the good ingredients you use…ie., coconut oil, xylitol, healthy flours and so on?.     hello, I have a question i would like to ask. As for the oatmeal almond butter cookies, do i have to cook the quick oats and then stir it all the other ingredients together? Sorry if this question is sort of dumb, I’m new to baking. 😀

    I just made these cookies, but I used canola oil instead of coconut oil. They turned out great! Chewy and sweet. The banana flavor is fabulous! It’s like eating chocolate chip banana bread in a the form of a cookie. Thanks for the recipe!

    Hi, healthy means VERY LITTLE brown flour if you have to use sugar use natural or brown, and also is this REALLY healthy??? well it also includes syrup and milk so I think not.

    of course with kind regards (they are a nice treat) but not quite healthy is all I’m trying to say but well done for trying anyway 🙂 I’m just trying to help.
